The Woodchipper is a small Sharp Class dragon that first appeared in Dragons: The Nine Realms.
Physical Appearance[]
Hatchling to Adult[]
Woodchippers are small dragons with a stocky build and stubby legs. Their body color is off-white with black spots, and they have visibly scaly underbellies. The tops of their heads are flat and black, and they have a row of straight, sharp horns along their jaws and the back of their heads. They have chisel-like incisors, similar to beavers, that are long and rectangular, with two longer ones in the middle and two slightly shorter ones on each side. Woodchippers also possess a black dorsal ridge fringed with green, extending to the end of their tails.
Furthermore, within the Woodchipper species, there exists a queen variant distinguished by a green underbelly, green horns, and yellow-shaped stripes on its head. Notably, this variant is unique in having wings, although they are relatively small compared to its body size.
Abilities[]
Queen Connection[]
Similar to a queen bee or queen ant, the Queen of the Woodchippers possesses a remarkable ability to establish a unique form of communication with her kin. This ability allows her to transmit messages and commands to the Woodchippers from a considerable distance away. The precise title or name for this power is not yet defined or known within scientific literature. However, it is clearly a distinct form of telepathic communication that enables the Queen to exert control and coordination over her subjects, who all act in unison.
Crawling[]
The Woodchippers' ability to crawl on tree surfaces, akin to the proficiency displayed by some insects, is noteworthy.
Tunneling by Chewing[]
The incisors of Woodchippers are elongated and rectangular in shape, resembling chisels. These teeth possess significant strength, allowing them to easily penetrate the inner surface of trees and create tunnels without difficulty.
Social Nature[]
Woodchippers establish extensive colonies within the hollowed trunks of enormous trees. These dragons exhibit remarkable collaborative behaviors, working together to construct intricate tunnel systems and diligently identifying and repelling any potential intruders that pose a threat to their communal dwelling and their Queen.
Behavior and Personality[]
The Woodchipper is a social dragon species that live in large colonies ruled by a Queen, who commands them telepathically to act in unison. The workers build inside hollowed trunks of huge trees from the Giant Realms complex tunnel systems. They are, in general, a curious and calm species, but they can easily change their mentality towards distress and anxiety while facing threats. Wagging their tails is a sign meaning that the members of the colony receive orders from the Queen. The only way to gain their trust is by earning their leader's trust. These dragons are emotional beings which can help if you show them your proper intentions, though revealing the right emotions behind.
Weaknesses[]
Small Size[]
These dragons can be easily defeated, despite being found in large numbers, as shown by Jack who, with a gust of wind from his wings, easily sent them back.
Training[]
Understanding the emotional behavior of these dragons is crucial for successful training; otherwise, they may experience anxiety and distress. Tom and Jun's initial endeavors proved unsuccessful due to their mutual distractions, which hindered the establishment of necessary eye contact essential for building trust. Consequently, both the Queen and her subjects responded with hostility. However, once Tom and Jun resolved their differences, the Queen readily accepted them, and her colony even extended assistance in their escape. Another effective approach involves assisting the dragons in resolving their own challenges, thereby fostering trust.

Season 7[]
In "Hearts of Heroes", Tom accidentally offends Jun after Eugene tries to get Tom to admit that he and Jun actually love each other, causing Jun to angrily run off. Tom searches for Jun and eventually finds her near a tree. He attempts to apologize to her; however, they are ambushed by Buzzsaw, forcing them and their dragons to hide inside the hollowed tree, where they meet a large group of Woodchippers. Despite Tom's best efforts to make amends with Jun, due to her stubbornness as well as their mutual distractions, the Woodchipper colony reacts with hostility, as does the Queen when they try to bond with her. Meanwhile, Buzzsaw has Jack chop the tree apart where Tom and Jun were hiding in. Eventually, after Tom and Jun resolve their differences and reveal their feelings for each other, the Woodchipper colony and their Queen appear and sense that Tom and Jun are finally at peace. They then bond with the Queen, earning her trust, and ask her to help them get out of here. She commands her colony to create a new exit by chewing through the wood.
Meanwhile, Buzzsaw's victory is short-lived when the kids and their dragons, along with the Woodchipper colony, manage to escape from the tree. Tom then reveals to the Queen that Buzzsaw is the one responsible for destroying the colony's tree, and the Queen orders her followers to attack him. Eventually, Buzzsaw flees on Jack. Despite the damage that Buzzsaw caused to the Woodchippers' tree, Tom and Jun assure the Queen and her colony that the tree will hold and regrow over time.
Season 8[]
In "How to Train Jörmungandr", when Tom is practicing with Valka's Staff, he tries using it on the Woodchipper colony, but they ignore him; however, as he improves his dexterity with the staff, the Woodchippers divert themselves from their task and watch Tom with interest.
In "The Great Foster Fake-Out", Woodchippers were some of the many dragons rescued from Jörmungandr and brought to Rakke Town, where the Rakke employees could adopt them. They along with the other dragons were later hidden from Mr. Rakke when he arrived.
Trivia[]
- The Woodchipper is one of the few dragons with no wings (except the Queen), like the Vine Tail, Octofin, Glass Caster, and Cavern Crasher.
