Occasionally within the Dreamworks Dragons Franchise, tribes or groups of people are mentioned but no name or title is given to these tribes. These unnamed tribes are listed here.

Dragons: Riders of Berk[]

Tribe on Shivering Shores[]

I'm heading off to my yearly meeting with the Chief of the Shivering Shores. The last man who showed up without a gift left without a head.
  Stoick

The island Shivering Shores has been mentioned many times in the franchise, but little is known of the tribe that lives there. Stoick mentions visiting with their chief every year, suggesting that they are allies of Berk; as long as a gift is brought. During the events of Titan Uprising, the Dragonroot Company has taken over the village, though it is unknown what happened to the tribe itself.

Dragons: Rise of Berk[]

Northern Mining Community[]

Far North, in a frigid mining village, a rather rambunctious “ruby” was found. The miners thought they were rich – until the giant ruby sneezed sparks.
  Dragons: Rise of Berk

In an undisclosed region to the far North, there is a town set up around mining. It is unclear if the community is permanent, or changes as seasons or mining resources change. However, it appears that all or a significant portion of profit from mining go to the miners themselves, rather than to a tribal entity elsewhere, implying that the village is independent and permanent and claims the land on which they reside.

School of Dragons[]

Unfriendly Tribe[]

At some point before the events of School of Dragons, at least some of the members of an unfriendly tribe met Skulder the Archaeologist during one of his explorations far away from his homeland of the Isle of Berk. The tribe acted particularly aggressively towards Skulder, but he was able to escape from them unscathed. Skulder would later relate the memory of this expedition while trapped in a cage by Harald Forkbeard on Mudraker Island, where he stated that he wished he could forget the memory of his expedition with the tribe.

Whew! Thank you, old friend. This experience reminds me of the time I ran into a particularly unfriendly tribe far from here. It's a memory I would much rather forget. [src]

Refugees[]

At some point before the events of School of Dragons, this group of refugees were attacked by the Warlords, forcing them to leave their current home. After hearing about Berk's first encounter with Grimmel the Grisly, the Defenders of the Wing discovered these refugees attempting to flee from the Warlords' ships. Very few of the refugee ships remained, with most having been either wrecked or burned. Knowing that the refugees would likely be unable to survive the onslaught for much longer, Dagur the Deranged and Mala summoned the player to Impossible Island and briefed them on the situation. The player joined them in their attempt to defend the refugees.

After speaking with the refugees, the player, their dragon, Dagur, and Sleuther entered into battle with the attacking Warlords. After successfully beating them, Dagur and Sleuther distracted the Warlord soldiers while the player led the remaining refugee ships bearing the refugees to Mala so that they could be taken to a safe location.

Dragons: Titan Uprising[]

Peoples formerly of Odin's Grassland[]

Gyllentalon the Thunderclaw resides in Odin's Grassland. He is a brilliant golden color. A tribe that formerly resided on the Grassland thought that he arrived at his brilliant color from the golden tears of the goddess Freya, shed while weeping about the disappearance of her husband Od. The tribe brought tithes to the dragon, hoping their offering would help find the lost.

These people were described as aboriginal, despite clearly having a Norse or Germanic belief system. They also migrated to an undisclosed Northern location for unknown reasons.

According to the tale, When the goddess Freya was grieving the disappearance of her husband, Od, she wept tears of gold that fell onto an unwary lizard sunning itself on the rocks below. The tears transformed the hapless Thunderclaw into the Gyllentalon, blessed with the grief of the Goddess of Love. The Aboriginal People of Odin's Grassland brought offerings of food to Gyllentalon's lair, in the hopes that their missing loved ones would return through the blessings of the Goddess.

Inhabitants of Horrendous Point[]

Horrendous Point is considered a location within the Isle of Berk. Indeed the island appears to be much more extensive than only Berk village proper or Berk harbor. This would imply the colony of Horrendous Point consisted of Hooligan tribes-people, possible a group of families farming resources. This would make Stoick, Hiccup, or perhaps a previous Hooligan chief, the chief of the Horrendous Point colony. The colony disappeared over the course of a winter for unknown reasons. Only the scales of a Triple Stryke known as Emperor Pandinus were found. Because Dragon Riding would have made the colony accessible during winter, it is assumed that the colony vanished prior to the ending of the war with dragons on Berk.

The entire colony at Horrendous Point disappeared over the course of a single winter, and when the ruins of their village were examined, the purple scales of the Emperor Pandinus were found.

The Solid Sea Tribe[]

The people of the Solid Sea make a living based around reindeer herding in a very arctic region. They appear to have a belief-system at least partially based on Norse or Germanic mythology, but do have other folklore unique to their Arctic region. While reindeer herding implies at least some nomadic living, at least some of the peoples formed communities. Part of the community structure was a "Godhi", which in other areas are called "Gothi". These were people in charge of religious ceremony, and where most likely involved in local politics, and may have had other functions as well. The people of the Solid Sea were effected by the Scourge of Odin that ravaged the Barbaric Archipelago (a several generations prior to the birth of Hiccup). The disease wiped out communities of Solid Sea inhabitants, decimating families, and leaving children as orphans. One such child, Birta the Bane, was the sole survivor of her village and managed to survive in the wild for several weeks before befriending a Zipplewraith dragon hybrid. She and the dragon lived together in the wild, giving rise to many folktales for the other Solid Sea inhabitants.

Tales from the reindeer herding tribes of the Solid Sea tell of a one-eyed woman who lives in a migratory house that wanders around the arctic wastes on chicken legs. It is said she rules the fates, and that she will carry away children who annoy their parents to tell them too many stories before bedtime. Those children are never seen again.

The Ancients[]

The Ancients are a group of peoples said to live far in the past and have gone extinct, as mentioned in the biography for the Eruptodon Tectonic Thorium. They created artwork carved into stone - petroglyphs - which can be found in caves on Vanaheim. The petroglyphs preserved there tell the Ancients' creation story. This creation story is significantly different from that of other belief systems during the Viking Age. Differences include viewing the world as round, dragons featuring prominently in the formation of the world, and most significantly, the absence of involvement of one or more deities. No other artifacts or archeological evidence has been described about the way of life of these people.

Firstly, they tell of an earth that is round like a ball of yarn, despite the fact that everyone knows the world is flat. The glyphs talk of the history of this sphere, and how it was born from the core of the sun. At first it was all fire and molten rock. A nuclear core of magmic fire. Then, born from the night sky above, a meteor of ice crashed into the flaming ball, cooling a section and hardening it into dense, cold stone. On this island of rock, the first rains fell, and from them came the first life. That lift changed over time, growing into an army of proto-Eruptodons. They spread in droves, feeding hungrily on the flaming surface of the earth until it was cool and hard and other forms of life appeared.

Inhabitants of Vinland[]

The people of Vinland, as mentioned in the biography for the Gronckle Thanksgiving Meatlug were the first to celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving, utilizing the native pumpkins and turkeys of Vinland to do so. Upon establishing contact with the Viking explorer Leif Erikson, they showed him their traditions, stories of which were transported by Erikson back to the Barbaric Archipelago.

Trivia[]

  • The inhabitants of Vinland are meant to represent Native Americans, similarly to the Feather People from the book series. In actual history, the Vikings were, in fact, the first Europeans to arrive in the Americas, specifically Northern North America, and they did encounter native peoples. There is increasing evidence that Vikings may have arrived in the Arctic North America to hunt for seals and walruses, as well as trade with native peoples, such as the Dorsets or the Thule peoples. Vikings may have even established temporary hunting and treading camps in the northern most Canadian islands. Famously, the Vikings colonized the Southern tip of Greenland led by Erik the Red from Iceland. But as the climate changed, the Viking colony eventually vanished. Erik the Red's children - Lief Ericsson, Thorvald, and Freydis, all visited North America further west. Lief encountered three 'lands' he named Helluland (land of the flat stones), Markland (land of forests), and Vinland (land of wine). These probably correspond with Baffin Island, Labrador, and Newfoundland, respectively. Historic Vikings referred to Native Americans as "skraelings".
