Tom's Viking Helmet is an ancient head covering belonging to Tom Kullersen that was made by his Viking ancestors.
History[]
Dragons: The Nine Realms[]
Season 1[]
In "First Flight, Part 1" Tom pulls the helmet out of a box containing a set of his family’s belongings. He puts it on while expressing his pride of his Viking heritage to his mother. He continues to wear it as he and his mother play pretend Vikings together.
In "Fault Ripper" Tom recognizes the symbol that his Night Light dragon Thunder made on the wall of the Dragon Club’s cave as the same symbol on the helmet. This causes him to gaze in awe at the symbol on the helmet later that night, being astonished to realize that his ancestors lived alongside dragons.
Season 2[]
In "Uniconned", after waking up from a nightmare about his previous battle with the Fissure Fault Ripper, Tom notices the helmet resting on his desk in his room. It is later revealed that by this point, he had yet to tell the other riders about the helmet’s symbol, having hoped to realize its true meaning and his connection to it before involving them.
In "Downpour", Tom wears the helmet while flying alone with Thunder into the Hidden World, hoping to find clues as to the symbol’s meaning. When they are attacked by a school of Flood Flangs while inspecting the ocean chamber of the Crystal Realm, Tom drops the helmet into the water, causing him to dive after it. Fortunately, Tom manages to retrieve the helmet while also being rescued from being devoured by one of the Flood Fangs by Thunder. Later on, Tom informs Jun about the helmets symbol without the knowledge of D’Angelo and Alex, hoping that her knowledge of myths and ancient cultures can solve its symbol’s mystery.
In "Follow the Lightning, Part 1", Tom takes the helmet with him and the others as they explore the Underworld section of the Hidden World, eventually revealing the truth to D’Angelo and Alex.
In "Follow the Lightning, Part 2" after defeating Thunder’s Skrill nemesis, the Dragon Club find an ancient Viking spearhead inside the Silver Realm, which, to their awe, possesses the same Night Fury symbol as the helmet, causing them to realize that other humans have travelled through the Hidden World.
Season 3[]
In “The Sky Torcher”, following their triumph over an invading Alpha Sky Torcher and its pack, the Dragon Club discovered an ancient cavern within the Crystal Realm of the Hidden Realm. Inside they found an ancient Viking canister, bearing the same Night Fury symbol as Tom's helmet and the spearhead.
Season 4[]
In "Uncharted Territory", after saving Webmaster and Feathers from a predatory Yetiwing in the Ice Realm, Tom kept his the helmet on his desk while attempting to open the mysterious canister. During his attempt, Tom accidentally knocked the helmet onto the ground, resulting in one of its horns breaking off. While examining the damage, however, Tom, to his surprise, discovered that the bottom of the broken off horn not only also contained the Strike Class symbol, but also served as the key to unlocking the canister. This allowed Tom to unlock the canister’s mechanism and open it, and discovering the Book of Dragons inside.
Physical Appearance[]
Tom’s Helmet is the standard helmet worn by the Vikings of the Barbaric Archipelago. The bowl-shaped metal has two curved horns on opposite sides, that appear to possibly be bovine horns. Similar to Hiccup’s Helmet, there is a small dent on one of the helmet’s top sides. Painted on the back of the helmet is an orange Night Fury symbol for the Strike Dragon Class. And a wooden Night Fury symbol for the Strike Dragon Class was also carved on the inside of the horn.
Function[]
The helmet’s primary function was presumably to serve as a protective head covering. By modern times, it is an artifact and family heirloom of the Kullersen Family. Tom occasionally wears it when playing pretend Vikings with his mother Olivia. In “Uncharted Territory”, however, it was revealed that the horns of the helmet are, in truth, secretly meant to serve as special keys for unlocking an ancient Viking canister discovered by the Dragon Club in the Hidden World. If one removes one of the horns from the helmet, a key, in the form of the Night Fury insignia, will be made visible on the bottom of the horn. Inserting and turning this key into the canister’s lock will allow the user to unlock it.

Trivia[]
- Tom’s Helmet possesses a dent on one of its top sides like Hiccup's Helmet.
- The Helmet is most likely of Berkian descent due to having the Strike Class symbol, which was also the symbol of Berk’s Dragon Riding Academy. This could imply that Tom and his mother are possibly descendants of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe.
