Tom's Lightning Sword is an offensive weapon forged and used by the Dragon Rider Tom Kullersen.
History[]
Dragons: The Nine Realms[]
Season 2[]
In "Follow the Lightning, Part 2", the sword started out as a shard of silver-bearing crystal, which Tom found in the crystal maze. He used the sword as a weapon against Thunder's Nemesis, channelling lightning away from the Titan Wing Skrill and down the blade and consequentially Tom's body, recharging Thunder's electricity. The event left Tom with painfully red hands, which were mildly burned from the electrical charges.
Season 3[]
In "When Magma Comes to the Surface", Tom has the idea to turn the silver shard into a sword in case he needs to defend himself but needs to temper the metal in order to forge it. Since none of the Dragon Club's dragons can breathe fire or spew lava, they go to find the Magma Breather instead. However, the dragon is unable to produce lava and appears ill, so they spend the episode taking it up to the ICARIS medical bay. The crystal blocking its 'lava maker' is removed, and Tom uses its magma to begin forging the shard into a sword.
Season 4[]
In "The Night Lights, Part 1", when Tom and Thunder found Shadow tied up in the ice realm Tom uses his now complete sword to cut the rope tied to Shadow's leg. Later when Shadow was brought back to the lair he immediately started playing with it and wouldn't give it back to Tom until Thunder got annoyed and made him give it back. Later when thy met up with Thunder's family Shadow once again stole the sword and when Tom took it from him Shadow sneezed which travelled through the sword and struck down the Elder Night Light which caused Thunder's family to attack the riders, Tom used the sword to deflect the Elder's attacks but dropped it show he wasn't a threat although that didn't convince the Elder until Thunder protected Tom from the blasts. When Tom has to leave Thunder with his family he removes the saddle but takes the sword with him.
In "The Night Lights, Part 2", later when they tried to defeat the Snow Wraith and then the second one showed up it blasted Tom away knocking his bag and sword off his back, when the Elder comes for them he slides the sword over to him showing he's willing to work to together to defeat the Snow Wraiths. When they all return Tom rides the Elder and channels his lighting to strike one of the Snow Wraith. But the other Snow Wraith tries to attack them and lands a hit which causes Tom to fall off the Elder and lose the sword, when Thunder came to rescue Tom and get him out of there Shadow arrives with the Sword and gives it to Tom in which Thunder and the Elder channel their lightning into the sword and blast the Snow Wraiths with it defeating them. When everything's okay and Tom says goodbye to Thunder again Shadow tries to play with the sword again.
Season 6[]
In "Dragons Everywhere", when Tom tries to pull a Nadder Spine out of Thunder's shoulder one of the Deadly Nadders shows up and tries to attack them resulting in Tom hurled again the wall and the sword to fall out of the scaffold, when Thunder is corned and about to shot Tom dives in front and uses the sword to deflect the spines and uses it to fend off one of the Nadders until it knocks the sword away to Thunder who uses his power to stop them from attacking.
In "Webs' Masters", when a Deathgripper tries to kill Eugene Thunder channels his lightning into Tom's sword and blasts the webs off Eugene allowing him to escape.
In "In Too Deep", when Eugene complains that he doesn't have a special tool, he states Tom has his Lightning Sword.
Season 7[]
In "Heart of Glass", Tom throws his sword at the Glass Caster's feet and Thunder blasts it, setting off an electric burst that melts the sand and traps the Glass Caster in a glass cage.
In "Eugene's Lean Mean Extreme Dream Team", Eugene messing around and borrow Tom's Sword pretending to be Tom while Webmaster holding Jun's Shield so Eugene prepares attack on Webmaster, but Eugene ends up getting bounced off Shield.
Season 8[]
In "Ragnarok: Part 1", when Tom and Jun are in the Nature Realm collecting limestone for Gronckle Iron they hear something in the bushes so Tom pulls out his sword ready to fight but lowers his guard when he sees its just a bunch of Vine Tails.
In "Ragnarok: Part 2", while Tom sits in Hiccup's old lair feeling like he failed to stop Jörmungandr Jun then tells him that Tom isn't like Hiccup but instead like Astrid as she states "she used her steel" and then hands him his sword showing they're alike. When the riders get ready to face Jörmungandr in a full scale attack he suits up and takes his sword into battle, later after getting reinforcements and arriving at ICARIS Tom holds his sword up proudly while Thunder commands the Fault Ripper, the Sky Torcher and the Dragon Club's Dragons to attack Jörmungandr. Once badly weakened Tom and Thunder go in for the finishing blow where Thunder channels electricity into Tom's sword and blasts a concentrated bolt of lighting through Jörmungandr's mouth knocking it unconscious.
Physical Appearance[]
Tom possesses a uniquely designed sword, featuring a blade with a bifurcated structure. One prong is notably longer than the other, and both prongs exhibit a curvature that converges inwards, resembling the shape of a pincer claw. The sword's handguard, positioned parallel to the hilt, showcases two grooves on the inner side and a rounded, non-sharp edge on the outer side, ensuring a secure and user-friendly grip. The hilt of the sword is wrapped in grip tape, which is likely electrically insulated to safeguard Tom from accidental self-electrocution. Additionally, the hilt incorporates a flattened pommel that stands perpendicular to the shaft. The sword's metallic composition exhibits a subdued silver luster.
When Tom isn't using his sword, he keeps in a leather scabbard. This scabbard can either be attached to the right side of Thunder's saddle or to Tom's backpack.
Before it was finished, Tom's sword was a piece of silver-bearing crystal from the Hidden World's Crystal Realm, used as a makeshift lightning rod. The rod was lined entirely with erratic edges & surfaces and had a noticeable bend in its shaft halfway between the handle & tip. An oval-shaped bend near the bottom of the rod acted as a handle for Tom to grasp it with, although it lacked any insulative material to protect him from shocks. The rod's material had a brilliant silver sheen.
Functions[]
- Absorption and Channeling Electricity: The sword was designed to channel electrical charges, usually ones produced by Night Lights. Lightning is absorbed into the metal structure, then immediately released in whichever direction the blade is pointed. Tom mainly uses his sword by having a Night Light charge it up, then swinging or thrusting it forward to shoot lightning at an enemy. If more than one dragon charges it, the sword will combine their energy into a single blast. He can also use it to parry incoming lightning strikes. Shadow tends to use the sword as a chew toy by gnawing on the hilt. When he sneezes, this causes the slightest electrical spark from his body to travel down the blade and fire off in a random direction. Before it was finished, Tom initially used his lightning rod to absorb wasted electricity from Thunder's battle with his nemesis, then channel that electricity back into Thunder to power up his next blast. This was extremely dangerous, as Tom had to use his own body as a conductor between the rod and Thunder.

Trivia[]

- Tom's sword needs Thunder's Lightning.
- Hiccup's Sword needs Hookfang's Monstrous Nightmare Gel.
- The Lighting Sword is also similar to Thor's Hammer Mjölnir, both being steel weapons made from a unobtainable metal and used for channeling lightning to strike at their enemies.
