“ | Through the open window came the clear sound of a bugle, calling all Vikings to a meeting of The Thing. A meeting at which no one was allowed to speak unless they were holding the Fire Stone. | ” |

The Thing is an annual gathering of many tribes from the Barbaric Archipelago that takes place during Sun'sday Sunday.
Description[]
“ | The Thing was a real step forward for the Viking Tribes. It took place in a gigantic circular dip on the slopes of Huge Hill. Steps had been cut into the dip to make an enormous amphitheater, and heather grew on the steps, which normally made them springy and comfy to sit on, but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond the organizers' control, this heather had recently been burned to a cinder. Everybody had to leave their weapons in a large heap before they entered the amphitheater, just in case discussions got heated. | ” |

The Thing is part of the Sun'sday Sunday Festival that celebrates midsummer. Various Viking Tribes gather on Berk, with the exception of Outcasts, Lava-Louts, and Rudeboys, who are considered lost causes and not invited. The finest warriors from all of the invited tribes gather in an amphitheater, leaving their weapons outside. A designated person throws the Fire Stone in the air and the Vikings fight each other while trying to get the stone. Whoever manages to grab the stone and touch it down on the plinth, is allowed to speak for one minute while everyone else must be silent and listen. After the minute is up, the person holding the Fire Stone must throw it in the air, and the whole procedure is repeated.

How to Twist a Dragon's Tale[]
The Thing takes place in the second half of the book. Stoick the Vast got the Fire Stone in the first round thanks to Gobber the Belch and used his time to rally the Vikings to fight the Exterminators hatching on Lava-Lout Island. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III got the stone in the second round thanks to Camicazi and Humongously Hotshot the Hero. He told everyone that Exterminators cannot be fought, but before he could tell them about his plan to throw the Fire Stone in the volcano, every tribe except the Hooligans left in a hurry to evacuate the Archipelago. Thus, The Thing ended prematurely.
