The Dragon riders follow Shadow back to the King's Realm, but discover that the Night Light's home is deserted, and covered in snow and unusual claw marks. With Shadow too scared to show where his family hid, Plowhorn tracks the Night Light family's scent back to the Night Light Elder's cave. Unbeknownst to the riders, something is watching them in thermal vision. Tom and his friends enter the cave but leave their dragons outside for back up. As they venture further into the cave, Tom suddenly bumps into something in the dark, so D'Angelo creates a torch to finally see inside. Tom discovers that he bumped into a desk, which makes D'Angelo assume that they're in some sort of hangout. But when Tom lights up a torch on the wall, several torches suddenly light up on their own, not only lighting up the whole room, but also revealing a cave painting of a man, his wife and two kids, and his own dragon. Looking at his book, Tom realizes that one of the drawings of the Vikings in his book matches the one on the cave painting. Alex then finds items on the desk, including a mysterious device that Tom decides to keep. When Shadow senses something familiar is near, he finally leads Tom and his friends to Thunder and his family, who appear to be alright despite what happened outside. Just as Tom reassures to Thunder that he's not going to leave him, the Elder Night Light suddenly appears, and is angered by Tom's presence. He then spits out a tooth, which Tom realizes came from whatever that attacked the Night Light family.

Meanwhile, Olivia, who is now determined to find out what Tom is really up to, tries to sneak her way to the location of the dragon's lair without anyone knowing. However, Sledkin suddenly appears out of nowhere, and questions what Olivia was doing outside. Olivia tries to throw her off by saying she just needs some fresh air, but Sledkin (believing Olivia is searching for dragonsite) insists on coming along with her. Olivia then lies about needing to get back to work anyway, and leaves Sledkin with a suspicious look.

Back in the King's Realm, the Night Light Elder escorts the riders out of his cave, and gives a stern look at Tom, which makes him believe that the Elder is blaming him for their situation. Suddenly, something attacks the dragon club with icy blasts and Thunder saves Tom from a stray blast and exposes the attacker as a Snow Wraith. The dragon knocks all the dragons out, except for Thunder, and forces the riders to retreat while the Elder battles the Snow Wraith. While the riders recuperate in the Bio Realm, D'Angelo determines the Snow Wraith can see body heat since it was able to find Feathers while she was cloaked. Tom admits that he believes the Night Light Elder was right to blame him for letting the Snow Wraith follow them from the Ice Realm into the King's realm, and for putting his family in danger. D'Angelo manages to convince Tom that it didn't matter whose fault it was, and that saving their dragons and Thunder's family is more important. Tom then comes up with a plan to use the traps meant to stop humans against the Snow Wraith and promises to Thunder that he'll save his family. From a distance, the Night Light Elder has been watching and observing the human kids.

Olivia tries her luck again to sneak her way to the location of the dragon's lair, without being seen by anyone. Unbeknownst to her, Sledkin had recruited Linda to help her spy on Olivia and see what find what she's after. However, Sledkin's plan is ruined when Philip Baker pulls Linda away help fix the security cameras.

The Dragon Club spy on the Snow Wraith, and D'Angelo discovers it is more interested in hunting the Night Light's. Eugene realizes that the Snow Wraith was following Shadow the whole time instead of them. Tom puts his plan into action by getting the Snow Wraith to follow him and Thunder, while his the others rescue their dragons. Tom and Thunder lure the Snow Wraith into the Bio Realm and eventually subdue it with a trap that they modified using the Snow Wraith's own tooth and the numbing darts, something the Elder witnesses. However, Tom's plan fails when a second Titan Wing Snow Wraith appears, knocks the duo out, and then wakes its fellow Snow Wraith companion up to continue the hunt. When the other riders' dragons begin to recover, Alex spots the two Snow Wraiths heading their way. The other riders decide to help the rest of the Night Light family escape by slipping away in Wu and Wei's steam cloud. However, the two Snow Wraiths are relentless in finding their prey.

When Tom finally wakes up, he sees that Thunder is still up from the attack. However, the Night Light Elder suddenly appears, and has finally decided to accept Tom's help. As the riders and the Night Lights try to escape from the Snow Wraiths, Tom and the Elder immediately come to their rescue. A battle ensues to drive out the invading Snow Wraiths, but Tom and the Elder are quickly knocked out of sky. One of the Snow Wraiths tries close in on Tom, but Tom quickly sacrifices the mysterious device to escape from the Snow Wraith and is then rescued by a fully recovered Thunder. As the battle intensifies, the Elder quickly comes to aid the duo, and Shadow unexpectedly brings back Tom's Lightning sword. Then using his lightning sword to absorb the lightning blasts of both Thunder and the Elder, Tom shoots the supercharged lightning at the two Snow Wraiths and knocks both giant snow dragons down. Tom yells at the Snow Wraiths to leave and stay away from his family and they flee in defeat.

After the battle, Tom thanks the Night Light Elder for helping him and his friends, and then the riders say their goodbyes to Thunder, Shadow, Splattertail, and Goggles. But noticing how sad Thunder and Tom were, and now understanding their bond, the Elder gladly allows Thunder to stay with Tom. The club flies back to the lair, with Tom and Thunder taking a head start. However, when they arrive at the lair, Tom suddenly finds his mom inside waiting there. Seeing that she knows the secret, Tom is left nervous.

Trivia[]

  • The introduction of a Viking habitat deep within the Hidden World, including a painting of Hiccup and his family in this episode is an inconsistency, since no humans were supposed to have ever entered the Hidden World after the events of the third film.
  • This marks the second time Olivia has seen Thunder, and the first where she's fully conscious.
  • Olivia now knows Tom's secret about dragons as well as their existence.
