Official Description[]
“ | Known to sing on the rooftops of Berk. One of the smallest of all the known dragons. But don't let its tiny stature fool you. This pesky dragon has caused Vikings all sorts of problems, especially considering their affinity to travel in groups ranging from five to upwards of ten. They also pack a pretty lethal puff of fire if you upset them. As the residents of Berk soon came to discover, when Terrible Terrors gather en masse, they often break into "song". These dissonant chirps, squawks, and croaks have kept many a Viking awake thoughout the night and into the morning. |

“ | Only half the size, but twice as unpredictable! This small Stoker class dragon can be too curious for its own good... and yours! A Terrible Terror may be tiny, but its rapid-fire fireballs pack a lot of punch. |

— Dragons: Rise of Berk |
“ | Those who may underestimate a Terrible Terror because of its small stature should probably think again. Despite their size, Terrible Terrors are known to be one of the most feared species of dragons. As members of the Stoker Class, they possess extremely accurate flame-throwing abilities. They are also known to be especially stealthy and agile. These dragons often live in flocks along the Isle of Berk. While Vikings should never underestimate these Terrible Terrors, it is important to know that these mischievous dragons can be trained. With determination and patience, young Vikings have been able to gain the trust and friendship of these once-feared Terrible Terrors. |

Development[]
Initially, the Terrible Terror was supposed to play the role of Toothless, as it followed Cressida Cowell's original book series, with Toothless as a Common or Garden Dragon. However, the Night Fury eventually took over Toothless' role, as director Chris Sanders felt that setting up a "threatening presence" gave the story an essential sense of suspense and tension.
The Terrible Terror's attitude and personality was compared to that of a seagull, and its movements inspired by that of "flying squirrels, salamanders, and one particular behavior of a desert gecko that prances to keep its feet cool on the hot sand," notes head of character animation Simon Otto in The Art of How to Train Your Dragon.
“ | If there is comic relief in the Dragon World, it is the Terrible Terrors. They are like naughty little terriers and make a lot of noise. They are annoying, like seagulls. | ” |
— Sanders |
The texture of this species was designed with cautious note of detail, featuring spots over an organic pattern of scales.
The Terror was the first dragon to be designed, modeled and rigged, and after two and a half years, was brought to life on the screen. The first scene — blinking and licking its eyeball animated by Gabe Hordos — brought tears to the animators' eyes, recounted head of rigging Jeff Light.
Physical Appearance[]

Egg[]
Terrible Terror eggs have been described to be as small as seeds in How to Train Your Dragon promotional material to being depicted as slightly larger than an adult chicken in "Animal House". In this Dragons: Riders of Berk episode, the Terror egg appears off-white, grey, or light green, with grey, brown, or dark green speckles. Its overall shape is that of a chicken egg.
In Dragons: Rise of Berk, Terrible Terror eggs are usually light green, though its color depends on that of the dragon inside, and is speckled with smaller spots. The egg can be called round but the shape of it is a little jagged and the roundness is not as smooth as other dragon eggs.
Terror eggs are shown to explode just like Gronckle eggs at hatching, in "Animal House", flinging what appear to be molten hot shards everywhere.
Hatchling to Adult[]
The Terrible Terror resembles a Common or Garden Dragon in appearance. It has an iguana-like body, two pairs of horns, one pair of wings, and a tail with a barbed tip. It comes in various colors, with green being the most common. Others are red, orange, blue, yellow and purple. Its large yellow eyes and small size make it one of the most remarkable species of dragons.
Titan Wing[]

“ | Fishlegs had drawn attention to the biggest dragon of the group, the Titan Terrible Terror, who was easily identified by its larger size and its combination of red and brown. The Titan also has larger spines that give this Stoker Class dragon a more bold look, but they are just as curious as their younger counterparts. The biggest difference between the two, is the Titan’s ability to fly with a viking! | ” |
— School of Dragons |
Titan Wing Terrible Terrors are reddish-brown in color. They have developed larger, black horns on their head and bigger eyes, thus giving them a more "devilish" appearance. They have larger spines on their back. Their wings possess dark brown spots and they have a small, pointy, arrow-shaped tail. These Titan Wings have grown slightly larger, though are still small compared to most dragons in the Franchise.
Abilities[]
Firepower[]

Terrors have a very strong and accurate fire attack. One could even argue they are the snipers of the Dragon World. It is said to have the best accuracy for fire bolts compared to most dragons, but it's unknown how good compared to the Night Fury.
Strength and Combat[]

Terrors are very social creatures and can be found in packs most of the time. Although a single Terror cannot do much damage to an opponent, a whole pack is a different story. A pack of Terrible Terrors is a lethal threat that is best avoided. As seen in "Book of Dragons", a pack of Terrors easily lifted up a fully-grown Viking. Also in the short, a pack successfully stole all of Bork's food. A pack of Terrors was able to defeat Snotlout easily in "The Night and the Fury", knock out Mildew by ramming him in "Worst in Show", and carry small humans on their backs or with their claws as shown in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. A single Terror can lift small light objects in the air as shown by Iggy, but a sheep has proven to be too heavy to lift for single Terror.
Though Terrors are one of the smallest dragons they are shown to be brave to fight bigger opponents if needed, as shown by a single Terror trying to fight over food against a Night Fury.
Jaw Strength[]

Terrors have quite sharp teeth, as the creatures bit Vikings several times, such as the Terror that bit Tuffnut in the first film, and Snotlout's Terror in "Worst in Show". Though their bite is said to be venomous, this hasn't been mentioned in the films, series or specials, and the effects of the venom is unknown. They do have great jaw strength, as shown by Pain to be able to bite for the entire day, and can take tiny pieces of skin off from Snotlout. It also took Gobber a whole afternoon to pry Pain off Snotlout's left leg, and he was also shown to bite through rope easily with no struggle at all.
Speed, Agility, and Stealth[]

Terrors are shown to be quite fast in flight and agile dragons in to make great quick turns as shown by Iggy. Terrors have shown to be quite fast and stealthy, as one stole all of Bucket's fish without him noticing, and the fact that Terrors often live secretly in Viking houses. As shown by Sneaky, Astrid trained him to be extremely stealthy and as Tuffnut commented, "Sneaky!" For example, when Meatlug had been captured by Alvin, Savage and Mildew, he perched on top of Alvin's helmet without him noticing and tricked Savage into hitting Alvin over the head with his sword, temporarily stunning him. Sneaky is also shown to be fast enough to fly from one person's head to another without the person realizing that he had moved at all, and without making any noise whatsoever.
Singing[]
It has been revealed that Terrible Terrors have the ability to "sing". The Dragonpedia mentioned that flocks of Terrors often keep the residents of Berk awake with their chirps, squawks, and growls. They often sing when they gather in large groups. A "singing" Terrible Terror also appeared in "Fright of Passage", where Snotlout had to deliver the Twins a singing Terrible Terror. In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Hiccup mentions he had been woken up by Terrible Terrors singing on his rooftop.
Endurance and Stamina[]

Terrible Terrors are shown to fly for a long time with out tiring out. One was able to withstand a small plasma blast going into his stomach and still walk fine. Pain was able to bite down on Snotlout for long period of time with showing no sign of struggle.
Intelligence[]
Terrors possess a high level of intelligence, as the trained Terrors from "Worst in Show" were able to learn new skills under one day. Fishlegs trained Iggy to grab whatever the picture Fishlegs was holding showed. For example, when Fishlegs held up a picture of an apple, Iggy grabbed an apple with his mouth and gave it to Fishlegs.
Air Mail Delivery[]

Dragon Riders trained Terrible Terrors to send messages to the others by its kind that returns to their territory.
Resistance to Low Temperatures[]
As shown in "Frozen", Terrible Terrors are able to survive in cold environments and even sleep in them with no signs of illness.
Weaknesses[]
Pack Dependency[]
Although Terrible Terrors are strong in packs, lone Terrors are actually very weak and, as shown by Toothless in the first movie, can be defeated by one fire blast. They also try to pick fights with dragons a lot bigger than themselves, and this often doesn't end very well.
Light Attraction[]
Similar to Night Furies and Screaming Death, Terrible Terrors can be easily distracted by light reflected from something shiny, as shown by Hiccup during the dragon-killing session, where he distracted a Terrible Terror that attacked Tuffnut and made it chase the light back into its cage.
Behavior and Personality[]
“ | They are small and underestimated. | ” |
— DeBlois |
Terrible Terrors are shown to be very mischievous, as they like to play with Vikings and other dragons. They often travel in packs and they can be quite aggressive and over-ambitious. They tend to pick a fight with larger animals, though they mostly get defeated. Terrible Terrors are also very curious creatures and they can be found in unexpected places. They will eat just about anything they can digest, therefore can be found in any environment in the archipelago.
In the first movie, and in Book of Dragons, Terrible Terrors were shown to lick their eyes, not unlike some species of geckos, despite the fact that they have eyelids. Furthermore, in a scene where Terrible Terrors were fighting over a fish, one bobs up and down in a similar manner to how real life geckos fight in order to intimidate one another.
Terrible Terrors like to make a lot noise, with some specimens being able to "sing". They are also shown to behave like hawks, as they stand on people's arms and can be used to send messages between islands.
Among many other things Terrible Terrors like to get into, paper is one of their favorites. According to School of Dragons, Terrible Terrors like paper and often destroy books, in this case, the School of Dragons History Book.
Training[]
Due to their peaceful nature, Terrible Terrors are fairly easy to train. Giving them a light to chase after can help out for training, as Terrors could be a great beginner dragon for young Vikings. Another way of training them is to simply feed them, as Hiccup was shown to give a single Terror a fish, and, showing great trust, the Terror went to sleep right next to him. As long as you prove to be of no threat to it, Terrors are easy and docile companions.
In the game School of Dragons, Terrible Terrors can be trained for riding only when they attain Titan Wing status.
In the episode "Worst in Show", the Dragon Riders train Terrible Terrors with various skills: delivering mail, butting heads, retrieving items, stealth, and firing and attacking on command. The Terror Mail aspect reappears throughout the franchise, even in the games.

How to Train Your Dragon[]
As Hiccup reads the book of dragons there are a few illustrations of the Terrible Terror which Hiccup read as extremely dangerous. Later the Terrible Terror was released into the arena as a training lesson for the gang although unlike the other dragons it's door had a smaller pet sized flap door which it crawled out of and simply stood still while licking its eyeball. Being so small, pathetic and dopey everyone thought it wasn't dangerous or strong which Tuffnut jokes about it until it lunges at him biting his nose hard and making it red, Hiccup however manages to distract it by using a new trick he learned with Toothless where dragons like shiny objects which he uses his shield to reflect the sunlight into a small spot making the Terror chase after it and simply lead it back to its pen and put his foot over its little door to keep it in. Later after Toothless and Hiccup's test flight when they are resting on a small island, a small group of Terrors arrive and try to steal Toothless' fish which the Night Fury growled at one to stay away but another Terror grabs a half eaten fish which the two little dragons start fighting over. Another one tries stealing a fish when Toothless wasn't looking but he gets it back and laughs at the little thief so it challenges him but as it breathes it building up the gas in its mouth Toothless immediately shoots a fireball in its mouth making the little dragon swell up like a balloon for a second. Hiccup taking pity on it gives it a fish and the Terror curls up beside Hiccup making him realize that everything they know about dragons is wrong. After Hiccup and Toothless killed the Red Death by using the same trick Toothless did to the Terror, Berk was at peace with the dragons which a few Terrors are seen living on Berk scurrying around which Spitelout even has one sitting on his shoulder until it flies away when Toothless excitedly starts jumping on people.
Racing For The Gold[]
In the "Ski Jumping" video segment, as Fishlegs is launched through the air he hits a Terrible Terror almost making it plummet, although as Fishlegs crashed into the glacier and the judge placed the medal around his leg the Terror came back and flew around the judge making him tilt his ladder over and fall while also stealing Fishlegs' medal.
Gift of the Night Fury[]

Book of Dragons[]
When they first discuss training a Terrible Terror Hiccup says that when training a Terrible Terror you must distract it with a very shiny object. Astrid claims that Terrors are cute which at first Gobber is surprised by but explains that Terrors may be cute on their own but when hunting in packs "it's no picnic", as Gobber explains Bork the Bold is shown having a picnic where a he tosses a piece of chicken for a Terrible Terror like he's playing fetch with a dog. But Gobber explains Terrors are social creatures and will always hunt in packs which as the Terror Bork is playing with comes back a whole pack shows up sitting in a tree although they start growling demanding food, which Bork offers them a whole cooked chicken to eat which they immediately shred and devoured it as well as Bork's clothes and one Terror comes back grabbing the piece of chicken Bork dropped.
Dragons: Riders of Berk[]
In "How to Start a Dragon Academy", Terrible Terrors are seen throughout the episode causing trouble in the village, along with the other dragons, like one stealing a Women's chicken leg and as it grabs the meat off her another one flies by stealing the bone. In "Animal House", when the animals stop producing milk and eggs due them being too afraid of the dragons, the Riders try showing the animals that dragons aren't so scary which Fishlegs tries to show them what they have in common. He then brings out an egg from the Terrible Terror which a Chicken sits on showing they did believe they weren't so different until the egg explodes spooking them more.
In "Dragon Flower", a Terrible Terror starts snooping around baskets Johann brought for Mildew although the merchant tries shooing him away only for it to bit his finger making Johann grab and toss it which provokes Toothless until Hiccup calms him down. Later Toothless began exhibiting strange behaviour as if he was sick, which the Terrible Terror from earlier also shows the same symptoms. When trying to figure out what new thing on the island has caused all the dragons to become sick they see the Terror eating Blue Oleanders meaning this is what caused the dragons to become sick. But once the a cure was found the Terror was also given the cure as it was seen happily flying with the other dragons.

In "When Lightning Strikes", a Terrible Terror is seen freaking out due to fire caused by lightning which it scurries around the ground looking for somewhere safe, until Astrid flies down and saves it.

In "The Iron Gronckle", while chasing a panicking magnetic Meatlug, Fishlegs orders Meatlug to halt which instead Hookfang did resulting in Snotlout getting thrown off and into a pile of food bags which a Terror was scuttling by and panicked as Snotlout crashed into him. The Terror then hissed at Snotlout, spooking him.
In "The Night and the Fury", during Astrid's idea of a training exercise, where everyone spends the night on Dragon Island without their dragons, Snotlout brags he's a master survivalist until he falls into the river which as he climbs out three Terrible Terrors walk out the bushes and Snotlout challenges them to bring it on which at first they stand still but immediately pounce and push him back into the river. Later as Fishlegs walks through the forest terrified after an encounter with a Typhoomerang he gets spooked by a pack of Terrible Terrors flying by before bumping into Snotlout. Soon when Dagur finds Toothless and prepares to shoot him, the gang can't do anything without Dagur knowing they train dragons however a pack of Terrors fly right by him making him miss and for Toothless to escape, Astrid shows up annoyed saying those Terrors were her to handle but an angry Dagur states "Terrors shmerrors, We're hunting a Night Fury here!"

In "Worst in Show", when arguing who the best Dragon Trainer is Snotlout suggests they need a level plain field as all their dragons have different stats, so Fishlegs devises a competition where the gang have to train a Terrible Terror in a day, and much to Hiccup's displeasure everyone including him takes a Terror to train although Fishlegs gets so competitive he completely ignores Meatlug who feels sad and forgotten. The next day when showing off what their Terrors can do they demonstrate with Hiccup's Terror "Sharpshot" was trained to be highly skilled in blasting with perfection as he took out three wooden ducks that were launched in the air with only three shots, Astrid's Terror "Sneaky" was trained to be stealthily agile and hide without anyone seeing him as he stood on Snotlout and Ruffnut's helmets without them knowing, the Twins' Terrors "Butt and Head" were only trained to fly headbutt eachother leaving them both dizzy, Fishlegs Terror "Iggy" was taught to fetch specific objects that Fishlegs showed pictures off as he perfectly demonstrated by fetching an apple after only seeing a picture of one as well as a bucket when Snotlout showed him a picture although it did toss it onto his head, finally Snotlout's Terror "Pain" wasn't trained at all as it simply wouldn't stop biting onto him as he also stated that the Terror was hard to pry off as it took Gobber a whole day to remove it from his leg. Although as the Outcasts kidnap Meatlug the Riders use their trained Terrors against the Outcasts as Sneaky sat on Alvin's head without him knowing as well as dodged and hid before Savage slammed a sword onto Alvin's helmet, as Alvin was about to strike Savage his sword was taken as Fishlegs ordered Iggy to fetch it from him, Hiccup then sent in Sharpshot who perfectly blasted away Meatlug's rope restraints but as she tried flying off one rope was still attached to her leg which Mildew tried to grab her until Butt and Head rammed into the sides of his head knocking him out, when Meatlug shook the restraint off Alvin and Savage roped her tail holding her back but Snotlout grabbed Pain and launched him straight at the rope as he bit off freeing Meatlug which pain immediately bit onto Snotlout's ear again. Later Hiccup tells Fishlegs they're going to do more training with the Terrors but he declines saying he needs to spend more time with Meatlug as they play toss the sheep.
Main article: Terror Mail |
In "Appetite for Destruction", Hiccup and Fishlegs develop a new messaging system called "Air Mail" (later changed to "Terror Mail") where they place a message attached to a Terrible Terror and it delivers to the island it needs to go too as Hiccup states Terrors are territorial meaning its in they're natural instinct to return home, the Twins claim it has a stupid name while Astrid doesn't believe it will work. Main article: Gothi's Pet |
Many Terrible Terrors were now living on Berk with the other dragons amongst the Vikings, as plenty were seen watching the races and living in the stables. Soon when Hiccup was talking to Astrid while on Itchy Armpit why he wasn't at the races, he claimed that as he woke up the sun was shining and Terrible Terrors singing on the rooftop so he thinks today will be great until Stoick gives him the talk about being Chief. Later its revealed that Gothi has trained and owned a flock of Terrible Terrors, who get a little spooked when the Riders fly by her hut which she then pets on to smooth its nerves until Snotlout decided to be Snotlout and fly by again but closer to scare them all making Gothi mad. When Stoick learned that Drago Bludvist was on the move and began locking down the island, Terrible Terrors were seen being moved into their pens in the stables. Later, when Drago and his Drago's Bewilderbeast arrives at Berk, Gothi was peacefully sleeping with her Terrors but they were the first to sense the Bewilderbeast' mind control as they immediately wake up and fly away after it controls them, as well as every other dragon on Berk including the other Terrors. But soon when Toothless challenges the Bewilderbeast breaking the alpha's mind control, every dragon including the Terrors flew to his side and began bombarding the Bewilderbeast with blasts of fire. Soon after the Bewilderbeast leaves and Toothless becomes the alpha all the Terrors return back to their owners including Gothi's pack who she welcomed home with open arms which they all swarmed and smothered her affectionately. Many wild Terrible Terrors were among the myriad of dragons in the Hidden World who bowed down in front of Toothless and the Unnamed Light Fury, showing respect for their alpha. But after Grimmel the Grisly captured Toothless, all the Terrible Terrors from Berk along with the other dragons came to their alpha's help, however Toothless ordered them to stop when Grimmel threatened to kill the Light Fury and they were all forced to go with the other dragons as Grimmel took them all away threatening the Furies' lives. Fortunately the Dragon Riders began an attack on Grimmel's ships and freed the Terrible Terrors along with the other dragons which returned to New Berk who were happy to reuinted with their owners. When the battle ended, Hiccup realized that the only way the dragons can be safe from humans was for them to go to the Hidden World so after Toothless gave the command to the dragons of Berk, all of them including the Terrible Terrors said their farewells to the Vikings and flew off to the Hidden World.

— Dragons: Titan Uprising |

“ | So far, Hiccup and Fishlegs have only discovered one thing that can soothe the Tense Typhoomerang — the song of a Terrible Terror. Most Vikings and dragons hate this off-key bleating. But to Tense Typhoomerangs, the Terrible Terrors' singing is like a lullaby that coaxes them into a more mellow state. | ” |

Trivia[]
- The growling and other sounds the Terrible Terrors make are actually based on a purebred Chihuahua from Cottage Grove, Minnesota.
- The Terrible Terror was originally designed to be a more faithful take on the original Toothless from the book series, but the creators of the film felt that it would be best to leave them as a separate species and make Toothless the more threatening Night Fury to give Hiccup's story a sense of tension. This is referenced in the filmmaker's commentary of the DVD release, where they relate the "tug-of-war" between Toothless and the Terror as a battle between Toothless' original and new incarnations.
- Even though Terrible Terrors have been stated to be the smallest dragon species, Fireworms have been shown to be much smaller than them, except for the Fireworm Queen.
- The Terrible Terror's appearance is seemingly based off that of small lizards, such as geckos.
- The way Terrible Terrors lay eggs that are as large as themselves is similar to real-life kiwi birds.
- Unlike most Stoker Class dragons, the Terrible Terror doesn't have the habit of setting itself on fire.
- Strangely enough, when a captured Terrible Terror lit the Dragon Eye, the output was in multiple colors, not just that of the Terror's fire. Even stranger, at the center of the projection was a crude depiction of what appeared to be a Night Fury, even though Toothless' own flame had revealed nothing about his kind. It is unclear whether this is a direct effect of the flame itself, or the product of the locking fail-safe mechanism was activated by the Flightmare.
- Depictions have been seen of people flying by having multiple Terrible Terrors each grabbing separate limbs.
- The role of Terrible Terrors being messengers may have been inspired by the role of Ravenhunters and Carrier Dragons in the book series, with their role being very similar to that of messenger pigeons in real life.
- In Dragons: The Nine Realms, D'Angelo revealed that Terrible Terrors and Snowtails are cousins.
