The Terrible Terror. Smallest of the dragons, but no less ferocious. You know it's about to breathe fire when you hear a small hissing sound. By taming it start with a shiny object. [src]
  — Gobber

The Terrible Terror is a small Stoker Class dragon that first appeared in How to Train Your Dragon.

Official Description[]

Known to sing on the rooftops of Berk.
One of the smallest of all the known dragons. But don't let its tiny stature fool you. This pesky dragon has caused Vikings all sorts of problems, especially considering their affinity to travel in groups ranging from five to upwards of ten. They also pack a pretty lethal puff of fire if you upset them.
As the residents of Berk soon came to discover, when Terrible Terrors gather en masse, they often break into "song". These dissonant chirps, squawks, and croaks have kept many a Viking awake thoughout the night and into the morning.
  Dragonpedia
Only half the size, but twice as unpredictable! This small Stoker class dragon can be too curious for its own good... and yours!
A Terrible Terror may be tiny, but its rapid-fire fireballs pack a lot of punch.
  Dragons: Rise of Berk
Those who may underestimate a Terrible Terror because of its small stature should probably think again. Despite their size, Terrible Terrors are known to be one of the most feared species of dragons. As members of the Stoker Class, they possess extremely accurate flame-throwing abilities. They are also known to be especially stealthy and agile. These dragons often live in flocks along the Isle of Berk.
While Vikings should never underestimate these Terrible Terrors, it is important to know that these mischievous dragons can be trained. With determination and patience, young Vikings have been able to gain the trust and friendship of these once-feared Terrible Terrors.

Development[]

Initially, the Terrible Terror was supposed to play the role of Toothless, as it followed Cressida Cowell's original book series, with Toothless as a Common or Garden Dragon. However, the Night Fury eventually took over Toothless' role as Director Chris Sanders felt that setting up a "threatening presence" gave the story an essential sense of suspense and tension.

The Terrible Terror's attitude and personality was compared to that of a seagull, and its movements inspired by that of "flying squirrels, salamanders, and one particular behavior of a desert gecko that prances to keep its feet cool on the hot sand," notes Head of Character Animation, Simon Otto, in The Art of How to Train Your Dragon.

If there is comic relief in the Dragon World, it is the Terrible Terrors. They are like naughty little terriers and make a lot of noise. They are annoying, like seagulls.
  — Sanders

[2]

The texture of this species was designed with cautious note of detail, featuring spots over an organic pattern of scales.

The Terror was the first dragon to be designed, modeled and rigged, and after two and a half years, was brought to life on the screen. The first scene—blinking and licking its eyeball animated by Gabe Hordos—brought tears to the animators' eyes, recounted Head of Rigging Jeff Light.

Physical Appearance[]

Egg[]

Terrible Terror Egg

Terrible Terror eggs have been described to be as small as seeds in How to Train Your Dragon promotional material to being depicted as slightly larger than an adult chicken in "Animal House". In this Dragons: Riders of Berk episode, the Terror egg appears off-white, grey, or light green, with grey, brown, or dark green speckles. Its overall shape is that of a chicken egg.

Animal House-ExplodingTerrorEgg-78

In Dragons: Rise of Berk, Terrible Terror eggs are usually light green, though its color depends on that of the dragon inside, and is speckled with smaller spots. The egg can be called round but the shape of it is a little jagged and the roundness is not as smooth as other dragon eggs.

Terror eggs are shown to explode just like Gronckle eggs at hatching, in "Animal House", flinging what appear to be molten hot shards everywhere.

Hatchling to Adult[]

The Terrible Terror resembles a Common or Garden Dragon in appearance. It has an iguana-like body, two pairs of horns, one pair of wings, and a tail with a barbed tip. It comes in various colors, with green being the most common. Others are red, orange, blue, yellow and purple. Its physical attributes (such as the type of horn and spinal ridge) suggest that, despite the size difference, it is closely related to the Monstrous Nightmare. Its large yellow eyes and small size make it one of the most adorable species of dragons.

Titan Wing[]

Fishlegs had drawn attention to the biggest dragon of the group, the Titan Terrible Terror, who was easily identified by its larger size and its combination of red and brown. The Titan also has larger spines that give this Stoker Class dragon a more bold look, but they are just as curious as their younger counterparts. The biggest difference between the two, is the Titan’s ability to fly with a viking!
  School of Dragons
Terrible Terror Titan

Titan Wing Terrible Terrors are reddish brown in color. They have developed larger, black horns on their head and bigger eyes, thus giving them a more "devilish" appearance. They have larger spines on their back. Their wings possess dark brown spots and they have a small, pointy, arrow-shaped tail. These Titan Wings have grown slightly larger, though are still small compared to most dragons in the Franchise.

Abilities[]

Firepower[]

Terrors have a very strong and accurate fire attack. One could even argue they are the snipers of the Dragon World. It is said to have the best accurate for fire bolts compared to most dragons but unknown how good compare to Night Fury.

Strength and Combat[]

Terrors are very social creatures and can be found in packs most of the time. Although a single Terror cannot do much damage to an opponent, a whole pack is a different story. A pack of Terrible Terrors is a lethal threat that is best avoided. As seen in "Book of Dragons", a pack of Terrors easily lifted up a fully grown Viking. Also in the short, a pack successfully stole all of Bork's food. A pack of Terrors was able to defeat Snotlout easily in "The Night and the Fury", knock out Mildew by ramming him in "Worst in Show", and carry small humans on their backs or with their claws as shown in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. A single Terror can lift small light objects in the air as shown by Iggy, but a sheep has proven to be too heavy to lift for single Terror.

Though Terrors are one of the smallest dragons they are shown to be brave to fight bigger opponents if needed, as shown by single Terror trying to fight over food against a Night Fury.

Jaw Strength[]

Terrors have quite sharp teeth, as the creatures bit Vikings several times, such as the Terror that bit Tuffnut in the first film, and Snotlout's Terror in "Worst in Show". Though their bite is said to be venomous, this hasn't been mentioned in the films, series or specials, and the effects of the venom is unknown. They do have great jaw strength, as shown by Pain to be able to bite for the entire day, and can take tiny pieces of skin off from Snotlout. It also took Gobber a whole afternoon to pry Pain off Snotlout's left leg and he was also shown to bite through rope easily with no struggling at all.

Speed, Agility, and Stealth[]

Terrors are shown to be quite fast in flight and agile dragons in to make great quick turns as shown by Iggy. Terrors have shown to be quite fast and stealthy, as one stole all of Bucket's fish without him noticing, and the fact that Terrors often live secretly in Viking houses. As shown by Sneaky, Astrid trained him to be extremely stealthy and as Tuffnut commented, "Sneaky!" For example, when Meatlug had been captured by Alvin, Savage and Mildew, he perched on top of Alvin's helmet without him noticing and tricked Savage into hitting Alvin over the head with his sword, temporarily stunning him. Sneaky is also shown to be fast enough to fly from one person's head to another without the person realizing that he had moved at all, without making any noise whatsoever.

Singing[]

The last thing on the list a Singing TT

It has been revealed that Terrible Terrors have the ability to "sing". The Dragonpedia mentioned that flocks of Terrors often keep the residents of Berk awake with their chirps, squawks, and growls. They often sing when they gather in large groups. A "singing" Terrible Terror also appeared in "Fright of Passage", where Snotlout had to deliver the Twins a singing Terrible Terror. In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Hiccup mentions he had been woken up by Terrible Terrors singing on his rooftop.

Endurance and Stamina[]

Terrible Terrors are shown to fly for a long time with out tiring out. One was able to withstand a small plasma blast going into his stomach and still walk fine. Pain was able to bite down on Snotlout for long period of time with showing no sign of struggle.

Intelligence[]

Terrors possess a high level of intelligence, as the trained Terrors from "Worst in Show" were able to learn new skills under one day. Fishlegs trained Iggy to grab whatever the picture Fishlegs was holding showed. For example, when Fishlegs held up a picture of an apple, Iggy grabbed an apple with his mouth and gave it to Fishlegs.

Air Mail Delivery[]

Dragon Riders trained Terrible Terrors to send messages to the others by its kind that returns to their territory.

Resistance to Low Temperatures[]

As shown in "Frozen", Terrible Terrors are able to survive in cold environments and even sleep in them with no signs of illness.

Weaknesses[]

Pack Dependency[]

Although Terrible Terrors are strong in packs, lone Terrors are actually very weak and, as shown by Toothless in the first movie, can be defeated by one fire blast. They also try to pick fights with dragons a lot bigger than themselves and this often doesn't end very well.

Light Attraction[]

Similar to Night Furies and Screaming Death, Terrible Terrors can be easily distracted by the light reflected from a something shiny as shown by Hiccup during Dragon Killing Session where he distracted the Terrible Terror that attacked Tuffnut and make it chase the light back into its cage.

Behavior and Personality[]

They are small and underestimated.
  — DeBlois

Terrible Terrors are shown to be very mischievous, as they like to play with Vikings and other dragons. They often travel in packs and they can be quite aggressive and over-ambitious. They tend to pick a fight with larger animals, though they mostly get defeated. Terrible Terrors are also very curious creatures and they can be found in unexpected places. They will eat just about anything they can digest, therefore can be found in any environment in the archipelago.

In the first movie, and in Book of Dragons, Terrible Terrors were shown to lick their eyes, not unlike some species of geckos, despite the fact that they have eyelids. Furthermore, in a scene where Terrible Terrors were fighting over a fish, one bobs up and down in a similar manner to how real life geckos fight in order to intimidate one another.

Terrible Terrors like to make a lot noise, with some specimens being able to "sing". They are also shown to behave like hawks, as they stand on people's arms and can be used to send messages between islands.

Among many other things Terrible Terrors like to get into, paper is one of their favorites. According to School of Dragons, Terrible Terrors like paper and often destroy books, in this case, the School of Dragons History Book.

Training[]

They also seem to be fairly easy to train. Giving them a light to chase can help out for training as this could be great beginner dragon for young Vikings. Or another way of training Terrible Terrors just to feed them, as Hiccup was shown to give single Terror a fish, and, showing great trust, the Terror went to sleep next to him. As long as you prove to be of no threat to it, Terrors are easy and docile companions. In the game School of Dragons, Terrible Terrors can be trained for riding only when they attain Titan Wing status. In the episode "Worst in Show", the Dragon Riders train Terrible Terrors with various skills: delivering mail, butting heads, retrieving items, stealth, and firing and attacking on command. The Terror Mail aspect reappears throughout the Franchise, even in the games.

Comparative Statistics[]

Appearances[]

How to Train Your Dragon[]

Compared to the other dragons, the Terrible Terror has a very small role. They only have two major appearances. The first is in the arena, where the recruits must fight one. Tuffnut claims that the Terror doesn't look very tough, before said creature knocks him to the ground, biting his nose. Hiccup, however, manages to distract it and lead it back to its pen.

The second one is after Toothless and Hiccup's test flight, when they are resting on a small island. A small group of Terrors appears and try to steal Toothless' fish. When one of the Terrors challenges Toothless, said dragon shoots a fireball in its mouth, making the dragon swell up like a balloon for a second. Hiccup, taking pity on the creature, gives it a fish, and the Terror curls up beside Hiccup, making him realize that everything they know about dragons is wrong.

Gift of the Night Fury[]

Only one Terrible Terror appears in this short. Near the end, when the Vikings and dragons are celebrating Snoggletog in the Great Hall, a young girl is carrying a rather annoyed-looking Terror in her arms.

Book of Dragons[]

The Terrible Terror is the first dragon to be introduced in this short. Hiccup says that, when training a Terrible Terror, you must distract it with a very shiny object. After Astrid claims that Terrors are cute, Gobber explains that Terrors may be cute on their own, but when hunting in packs, "it's no picnic." A rather fitting scene of a pack of Terrors attacking Bork the Bold while he is having a picnic follows.

Dragons: Riders of Berk[]

Terrors are often used as minor characters in the series, sometimes as a running gag for comedic effect. A group of Terrible Terrors steal chicken from a female Viking in "How to Start a Dragon Academy".

In "Animal House", Fishlegs tries to show the dragons and animals what they have in common. He then brings out an egg from the Terrible Terror. The egg later explodes.

In "Dragon Flower", a Terrible Terror is one of the dragons who gets sick from the Blue Oleander. This same Terrible Terror is seen flying with the Vikings and their dragons after a cure was found.

A Terrible Terror is seen freaking out due to fire caused by lightning, until Astrid saves it in "When Lightning Strikes".

Hiccup and his friends each have to train a Terrible Terror in a day during the events of "Worst in Show". The team turns it into a dragon training competition, much to Hiccup's displeasure. The Terrors, Sharpshot, Iggy, Sneaky, Pain, Butt and Head, were pitted against each other. Later on, these same Terrors help save Meatlug from Alvin and the Outcasts, using each of their special trained skills.

Hiccup uses a Terrible Terror as "air mail", having it carry messages to Berk. This same Terror is used again to get the other riders to bring the Screaming Death to Outcast Island during the events of "Cast Out, Part 2".

Season 3[]

In "To Heather or Not to Heather", Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut chase down a Terrible Terror, which was headed towards Fishlegs' hut. They managed to catch the dragon and take the letter it was delivering, before the Terror flew away, scared. At the end of the episode, a Terror delivers a letter from Dagur to the Dragon Riders.

Later, the flock of Terrible Terrors are seen sleeping with Gothi, but they wake up and fly away after the Alpha arrives at Berk and controls them. In the end, after the Alpha loses Toothless' challenge and leaves in defeat, the flock of Terrible Terrors reunite with Gothi and smother her affectionately.

Hiccup mentions to Astrid while on Itchy Armpit that he was awoken by singing Terrible Terrors on his rooftop.

A Terrible Terror is last seen trying to lift up a sheep in a dragon race, with no success, before it is snatched up by Barf and Belch. Some are later seen watching the race alongside many Vikings and other dragons.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]

When the people of Berk decided to move to the Hidden World, all the Terrible Terrors of the island began the journey too, carrying different things, such as ships. They eventually arrived at New Berk, where they settled down for a while.

Many wild Terrible Terrors were among the myriad of dragons in the Hidden World who bowed down in front of Toothless and the Unnamed Light Fury, showing respect for their Alpha.

After Grimmel the Grisly captured Toothless, all the Terrible Terrors from Berk, along with the other dragons, came to their Alpha's help. However, Toothless ordered them to stop when Grimmel threatened to kill the Light Fury.

Fortunately, the Dragon Riders began an attack on Grimmel's ships and freed the Terrible Terrors, along with the other dragons, which returned to New Berk.

When the battle ended, Hiccup realized that the only way the dragons can be safe from humans was for them to go to the Hidden World. After Toothless gave the command to the dragons of Berk, all of them, including the Terrible Terrors, said their farewells to the Vikings and flew off to the Hidden World.

Dragons: The Nine Realms[]

Season 1[]

AHNW-145-Tom-Jun-Thunder-Terrors

Jun cuddling a Terrible Terror in the Hidden World.

In "First Flight, Part 1", during the prologue showing Hiccup's map of the archipelago, a Terrible Terror is pictured on it.

In the same episode, upon entering a newly exposed chamber, Thunder wanted to show Tom the Hidden World, so after blasting away through a thin wall, Tom is then shown the Crystal Realm and an enormous group of Terrible Terrors flying and circling around a central pillar, which amazes and overwhelms him.

In "A Hole New World", when Tom shows Jun the Hidden World, a myriad of Terrible Terrors are seen flying around the central crystal pillar. When one of them lands next to Jun, she immediately begins cuddling with it, while noting how friendly the dragons are, despite her former belief that dragons terrorized people.

In "Dragon Club", after bringing D'Angelo to the Hidden World and witnessing the enormous flock of Terrible Terrors, D'Angelo becomes so overwhelmed that he passes out until Thunder shocks him awake.

Season 2[]

In "Magma Breather", it is revealed that the Terrible Terrors in the "Crystal Realm" section of the Hidden World will often cuddle beside the strange, green-glowing minerals found within it. These rocks appear to emit warmth that is soothing to the terrors, which is why they will often be found near it.

In "Downpour", Tom and Thunder pass by a group of Terrible Terrors while they are exploring the Hidden World.

Terrible Terror tracking collar

In "The Tangled Web", the Dragon Club begins catching multiple Terrors and placing tracking collars them, in order to better understand their migratory habits and possibly learn how large the Hidden World truly is.

In "Follow the Lightning, Part 1", while looking for Thunder in the Dark Valley an entire flock of Terrible Terrors were flying from something.

Season 3[]

In "Ride or Die", a Terrible Terror that wandered from the Crystal Realm into the Fire Realm was attacked, injured, and cornered by a Flame Thrower pack. Fortunately, before it could be finished off, both Tom arrived in time to distract the ferocious carnivores as Jun retrieved the Terror. Though both riders faced an intense battle with the Flame Throwers, both were able to keep the Terrible Terror safe, before brining it with them back to the Dragon Club's lair, where its injuries were mended by D'Angelo.

In "Empty Fireworm Nest", a Terrible Terror was disturbed by the sudden arrival of a Fireworm flock in the Crystal Realm.

In "It Flies in the Family", two Terrible Terrors in the Crystal Realm were cornered by three Flame Throwers that came from the Fire Realm. Luckily, the Dragon Club managed to intervene and drive off the Flame Throwers before they could attack the Terrors.

In "The Sky Torcher", several Terrible Terrors were among the dragons fleeing into the Crystal Realm when it was invaded by a massive Sky Torcher and a Flame Thrower pack under its command. Many of these Terrors were injured in the chaos, but their injuries were fortunately treated by D'Angelo who managed to nurse them back to health. Later on, upon discovering an entrance to it, the mentally ill logger Buzzsaw witnessed a Terrible Terror flying around in the Hidden World's Ice Realm.

Season 4[]

In "Cold Open", while checking on dragons after the Sky Torcher battle, D'Angelo and Eugene to check on some Terrible Terrors. When Eugene tries to act in charge, another Terrible Terror jumps into his arms, which startles and embarrasses him, then two more jump on him, making him freak out and trip over.

As seen in "The Decoy", Terrible Terrors native to the Ice Realm are a different breed called Ice Terrors.

Season 5[]

In "Welcome to the Wonderful World of Dragons", when Tom plans to stage a guided tour of the Hidden World for Olivia, Eugene tries to wrangle some Terrible Terrors but fails, so D'Angelo lures them with fish. Before Olivia could get to see the Terrors, the Scuttleclaw that Eugene wrangled starts screeching, making the Terrors go nuts and getting into a fight with the Snowtails. Later, they and all the other dragons go nuts due to the Scuttleclaw's screeching. However, after the screeching stops, the Terrors become docile again.

In "Barrel of Vine Tails", a Terrible Terror can be seen flying underneath the tree canopy of the Nature Realm.

Season 6[]

In "Dragons Everywhere!", Terrible Terrors are one of the many dragons that fled to ICARIS due to Sledkin and Linda provoking Deadly Nadders for their Dragonsite in the nest, which made them chase off other dragons out of the Hidden World. Tom discovered this after watching a Nadder attack two Terrible Terrors. However, after placing fake eels everywhere, they along with the rest of the dragons return back into the Hidden World.

In "Break in Case of Emergency", while D'Angelo, Eugene and a few dragons were locked in the hanger, Tom and Alex grab an emergency key to open the doors, but it can only be activated from the inside. So Jun gets a Terrible Terror and places the key around its neck, then places it into one of the vents so that the boys would get the key and open the door. However, the when Terror makes its way up to the control room, it starts messing with the systems, causing everything at ICARIS and Rakke Town to go haywire; however, D'Angelo and Eugene manage to capture the Terror and put the control settings back to normal. When they were about to take the Terror out of the station, Phil arrived to see who set off a fire alarm, in which Eugene took the blame while D'Angelo and the Terror hid to not be spotted. After everything was okay, the Terror then started chasing a sheep, in which the boys had to go after it again.

In "Undercover", when Jun and D'Angelo bring Sledkin into the Hidden World, they encounter a Scuttleclaw. D'Angelo and Jun state that Terrible Terrors set off a firing frenzy when hearing a Scuttleclaw's screech. When they do encounter two Terrible Terrors blasting at Dragonsite, Sledkin takes pictures of them and observes how their fire reacts to Dragonsite. Later, Sledkin and Linda secretly kidnap two Terrors and use them by playing a recording of the Scuttleclaw's screech, causing them to go crazy so that they'll blast the Dragonsite. The riders find out and then proceed to free the Terrors; however, Sledkin and Linda make it complicated by locking them in a room and, after the riders manage to escape, sending them after Linda in a van, who acts a decoy, while Sledkin captures the Terrors. The riders, however, confront her and protect the Terrors, but to prevent something bad from happening, May arrives and orders the Terrors to be taken back into the Hidden World and dismisses Sledkin from her work.

Season 7[]

In "Hobs and Saw", at D'Angelo's dragon hospital, two of his patients are Terrible Terrors; one that was resting on a gurney moves and perches on a curtain after Plowhorn startles it, and the other that was resting on the floor on a pillow.

In "In the Cards", D'Angelo apologizes to the group for being late since he was treating some Terrible Terrors that had an allergic reaction to some bushes which made them itch badly, but thankfully, he gave them some anti-itch cream. Later, when the dragons start snacking on some bushes with reddish-purple leaves, D'Angelo remembers and informs them that they were the same bushes that made the Terrors itchy, in which the other dragons and Eugene become itchy.

In "Rise of Jörmungandr", three Terrible Terrors can be seen flying through the Dark Realm. Later, as the riders make their way to Jörmungandr, the Terrible Terrors start blasting at red Dragonsite, in which its steam causes the riders become angry with each other.

Season 8[]

In "How to Train Jörmungandr", when Jörmungandr rampages in the Nature Realm, a couple of Terrible Terrors flee and get out of its path. Later, when Tom is practicing with Valka's Staff, he tries using it on a pair of Terrible Terrors, but his actions cause them to flee from him, leaving Thunder to chase after them; however, as Tom improves his dexterity with the staff, the same pair of Terrors land on a ledge and bow to him in respect. Later, Tom and Thunder evacuate as many dragons as possible from the Nature Realm, one of them being a Terrible Terror. Some Terrors are later seen in the dragons' lair, having been rescued by Tom and Thunder.

In "The Great Foster Fake-Out", a Terrible Terror that Eugene was supposed to be watching flew out of the lair, forcing Jun to chase after it. When she catches it, Eugene blames her, which results in them arguing. Later, after they bring the Terrors and other dragons to Rakke Town for the Rakke employees to adopt, a woman shows an interest in a Terrible Terror, but Eugene makes her pay for it until the dragon tries biting Eugene. Other Rakke employees are also seen happily adopting Terrors, but when Mr. Rakke arrives, they quickly have to hide them with the other dragons. After taking the Terrors to the hanger to hide them from Mr. Rakke, they and the other dragons get scared off when the Magma Breather activates the fire alarm, causing everyone else to capture them before Mr. Rakke sees them. Later, they manage to gather the Terrors and other dragons outside the station and herd them in, and they were later forced into the elevator to be taken to a higher floor and hidden in the lab.

In "Science vs. Nature", when the riders are ready to use the harpoon to freeze Jörmungandr with Speed Stinger venom, they find the Dragon Serpent attempting to bite at a flock of Terrible Terrors fleeing from it.

In "Ragnarok: Part 1", when Tom shows everyone a page in the Book of Dragons about Gronckle Iron, there are pictures of Terrible Terrors around the rock ingredients.

School of Dragons[]

A static Terrible Terror appears in the center of the Dream Stable, mimicking the DreamWorks logo. It is reaching out to paw at a hanging fish.

Leopold, a purple-blue Terror belonging to Harald Forkbeard, appears in the expansions "Battle for the Edge", "Return to Dragon Island", "Rise of Stormheart", and "Wrath of Stormheart", as well as figures in some quests.

Another Terror appears briefly near Eret during a quest from "Secret of the Leviathan". It is a Terror Mail sent by Queen Mala asking for help.

In the mini-game, "Alchemy Adventure", there is a "boost" which sends out two Terrible Terrors across the board to remove elements that correspond with their colors. There are six Terrors in all, one for each element group.

Dragons: Titan Uprising[]

Although they do not currently appear in the game, Terrible Terrors are mentioned in the description of the Snow Wraith Frostfang.

He even joins the Terrible Terrors in singing off-key holiday carols from the village rooftops!
  Dragons: Titan Uprising

Terrible Terrors are also mentioned in the description of the Tense Typhoomerang.

So far, Hiccup and Fishlegs have only discovered one thing that can soothe the Tense Typhoomerang — the song of a Terrible Terror. Most Vikings and dragons hate this off-key bleating. But to Tense Typhoomerangs, the Terrible Terrors' singing is like a lullaby that coaxes them into a more mellow state.
  Dragons: Titan Uprising

DreamWorks Dragons: Dawn of New Riders[]

Lots of Terrible Terrors appear in the background of this game, standing on trees or rocks and flying away when approached. There is also an extensive network of Terror Mail present between Berk, Havenholme, and other areas of the Barbaric Archipelago.

Trivia[]

  • The growling and other sounds the Terrible Terrors make are actually based on a purebred Chihuahua from Cottage Grove, Minnesota.
  • The Terrible Terror was originally designed to be a more faithful take on the original Toothless from the book series, but the creators of the film felt that it would be best to leave them as a separate species and make Toothless the more threatening Night Fury to give Hiccup's story a sense of tension. This is referenced in the Filmmaker's Commentary of the DVD release, where they relate the "tug of war" between Toothless and the Terror as a battle between Toothless' original and new incarnations.
  • Even though Terrible Terrors have been stated to be the smallest dragon species, Fireworms have been shown to be much smaller than them, except for the Fireworm Queen.
  • The way Terrible Terrors lay eggs that are as large as themselves is similar to real-life kiwi birds.
  • Unlike most Stoker Class dragons, the Terrible Terror doesn't have the habit of setting itself on fire.
  • The appearance of Terrible Terrors are seemingly based off that of small lizards, such as geckos.
  • Strangely enough, when a captured Terrible Terror lit the Dragon Eye, the output was in multiple colors, not just that of the Terror's fire. Even stranger, at the center of the projection was a crude depiction of what appeared to be a Night Fury, even though Toothless' own flame had revealed nothing about his kind. It is unclear whether this is a direct effect of the flame itself, or the product of the locking fail-safe mechanism being activated by the Flightmare.
  • Depictions have been seen of people flying by having multiple Terrible Terrors each grabbing separate limbs.
  • The role of Terrible Terrors being messengers may have been inspired by the role of Ravenhunters and Carrier Dragons in the book series, with their role being very similar to that of messenger pigeons in real life.
  • D'Angelo revealed the Terrible Terrors and Snowtails are cousins.
