They don't fly but they're fast. Faster than any dragon I've ever seen, and they hide in the shadows. Scavengers, looking for anything they can find. One drop of their venom can paralyze a human or dragon in an instant. They move in a pack following a leader who directs them like a war chief. [src]

The Speed Stinger is a small Sharp Class dragon that first appeared in Dragons: Defenders of Berk.

Official Description[]

The Velociraptors of the dragon world, Speed Stingers are fast, aggressive, and intelligent. They use coordinated attacks, moving in packs of dozens at a time, all led by the Lead Speed Stinger. Speed Stingers have wings, but they are small and undeveloped, so this species is essentially flightless. Confined to land, they rely on ice bridges and glaciers to move from place to place in search of food, although some species members have evolved with webbed claws. They are the fastest dragon on land. While other dragons such as Nadders and Night Furies, can outfly them, no one can outrun a Speed Stinger. Stingers are nocturnal dragons and typically seek shelter in caves or tunnels to avoid predators while sleeping. The Lead Speed Stinger is identifiable by its red wings and red stripes along his body (in contrast to the uniform aqua color of a regular Speed Stinger). The regular Speed Stinger will follow the Leader anywhere, without hesitation. A Stinger's main weapon is its poisonous barbed tail. Even a single sting can render any human or dragon completely paralyzed for hours or even days. Although Speed Stingers are incapable of generating flames, they make up for this deficit with several hidden abilities. Being nocturnal, Speed Stingers are blessed with amazing night vision. Additionally, when running at full velocity, a Speed Stingers dexterous feet allow the dragon to tread up walls and even run upside-down on ceilings and cave-tops for limited periods of time. Finally, these dragons have developed incredibly thick hides to protect them from the heat and friction when they race at top speed. This calloused skin renders Speed Stingers impervious to temperature extremes, as well as traditional weapons like arrows and spears.

Careful Vikings! Though they can't fly, Speed Stingers are the fastest Dragons on land or water! Their poisonous tails can sting just as quickly, leaving their victims temporarily paralyzed.

Physical Appearance[]

Egg[]

Speed Stinger Egg

The Speed Stinger's egg in School of Dragons and Rise of Berk appear to have a swirly pattern that radiates from the middle. It is tan in color and has little stripes on each layer of the swirl. Because of the distinct segments on the swirl, it resembles the pattern of some sea shells.

Hatchling to Adult[]

The Speed Stinger is a swift, flightless dragon which resembles a featherless theropod dinosaur (particularly a Velociraptor). Even though it's flightless, with sail-like appendages on its head, back and legs, the Speed Stinger does have wings, though these are very small and vestigial. Its name is derived from the barbed stinger at the tip of its tail that resembles a stingray's. All of them have red stingers and red eyes. Their small pupils resemble those of Terrible Terrors, and the shape of their heads somewhat resembles that of a blue shark. Speed Stingers have muscular back legs with two claws at the front, and one in the back. Some packs of Speed Stingers have webbed talons which allows them to run across water (island hopping). Average Speed Stingers are aqua colored, while the leader has red stripes, highlights, and is slightly larger than the rest of the pack.

In Dragons: The Nine Realms, Speed Stingers appeared to no longer have the mint green coloration. Instead, they are dark green with spots covering their bodies. The fins on their head, back, and behind their legs have their own color, and the color varies between individuals. As seen in "Sting It On!", they also appear to have evolved to be bigger than they were in Viking times. However, they retained their red eyes and red stinger.

Titan Wing[]

In Rise of Berk, Titan Wing Speed Stingers develop a second pair of small wings and their tail becomes much thicker. Their skin turns into a deep shade of fuchsia and their fins, a hue of glossy dark blue. Instead of red, their eyes turn yellow.

In School of Dragons, Titan Wing Speed Stingers still have one pair of wings, but the wings are bigger. The Titan Wing Speed Stingers also appear to have whiskers on their head and back. They also appear to have eyebrow-like parts on their eyes.

Abilities[]

Despite their inability to fly and absence of physical weaponry, aside from their paralyzing stingers, Speed Stingers are regarded as one of the most perilous and belligerent dragon species. They are widely recognized for their exceptional speed, which is coupled with a notable level of intelligence.

Intelligence and Hunting[]

Speed Stingers have demonstrated a notable level of intelligence, as they exhibit cooperative behavior and engage in coordinated attacks as a pack. These assaults are typically orchestrated by a designated leader within the group. As pack hunters, these dragons exhibit impressive planning abilities, effectively communicating and executing their strategies. They exhibit unwavering loyalty to the Lead Stinger, adhering to their guidance without hesitation. In the event that the leader is injured or absent, the pack may experience disorientation and dispersal.

Keen Senses[]

Speed Stingers possess exceptional and potent nocturnal visual capabilities, enabling them to achieve impeccable vision during nighttime conditions, including the ability to navigate through minor snowstorms effortlessly. Their sensory acuity is also highly developed, allowing them to effectively track and locate missing pack members, such as Speedy, with remarkable precision. Furthermore, the Speed Stingers exhibit a keen sense of hearing, as demonstrated by the diurnal pack's successful destruction of trackers.

Paralyzing Sting and Accuracy[]

Young Stingers and adults are very accurate with their stingers. Their venom can paralyze any human and dragons such as Deadly Nadders, Gronckles, Hideous Zipplebacks, Monstrous Nightmares, and even Changewings. As shown in "A Gruff Separation", the Speed Stinger venom alone can paralyze a human or dragon without the tail.

The caudal extremity of a Speed Stinger is equipped with a pointed stinger adorned with barbs, which houses a potent venom capable of inducing complete paralysis in a single sting. The duration of paralysis varies, ranging from a few hours to several days, depending on the quantity of venom injected into the victim.

The venom of a juvenile Speed Stinger is not fully matured, and therefore lacks the potency to paralyze an entire victim with a single sting. Instead, the venom's effects are localized around the area of the sting, allowing the rest of the body to remain mobile and fully functional.

In "Sting It On!", the effects of their venom have slightly changed. One sting is still enough to paralyze a victim entirely, but instead of instant paralysis, their venom slowly works its way through the victim's body until the victim is completely paralyzed.

Strength and Combat[]

Although Speed Stingers aren't very strong or great in combat, their incredible speed makes them very formidable to hold their own in multiple fights, as one was able to fight a Triple Stryke before being defeated by the larger opponent. As seen in "Defenders of the Wing, Part 1", a Speed Stinger's tail strike is strong enough to break bones. One evolved Speed Stinger was able to easily push an adult human with its head or while running to knock down a teenager and push and pull around a teenager with its brute strength.

Endurance and Stamina[]

Due to the high energy of their running, Speed Stingers have highly calloused skin that can protect them from fire, and make them impervious to arrows and spears. Their speed produces plenty of friction and heat, thus they have thick hides. Speed Stingers have high stamina, as they are able to run very long distances and hunt down their prey without any sign of fatigue.

Speed, Agility, and Stealth[]

Speed Stingers lack any flame usage. This is because all the internal flame energy goes to its powerful legs, which give it its speed, agility, and the capacity to jump high. With high speed on their side, they are the fastest land runner of all dragons. They are fast enough to be almost invisible while traveling at high speed. As one of the most agile dragons, their speed allows them to gain enough velocity to run up walls and even run upside-down on ceilings for a short period of time. They can even keep up with some Strike Class dragons like a Night Fury, while doing ground battles. Even in modern times despite getting bigger, their speed and agility is the same as they can easily evade attacks from other dragons and run as fast as an ATV driven by a human. Speed Stingers are very stealthy, as they are able to use their speed to get around Vikings or dragons easily without being noticed until they attack.

Lead Speed Stinger Abilities[]

The Lead Speed Stinger is the largest Speed Stinger. It has been known to be the most aggressive, agile, strongest, and intelligent member of the pack; and is very dominant over the rest of the pack. A Lead Stinger has been seen to go against a Night Fury, which shows its aggression. It is able to dodge a Night Fury's attacks with its speed and agility. It also showed significant strength when he managed to escape Hiccup's net easily. They are also shown to have lots of stamina, able to fall from large heights and still get back up with ease.

Evolved Abilities[]

Water Running[]

It is said by Fishlegs in Race to the Edge that the Speed Stingers living on an island near to Dragon's Edge had developed webbed feet. This implies that the trait was either undiscovered before now or is only intrinsic to that group of Speed Stingers, as Hiccup later says it's proof of dragon evolution by adapting to their environment, being very wet and surrounded by the ocean, implying that the Speed Stingers in Dragons: Defenders of Berk did not have this trait. This makes sense, as they only found Berk through the use of an ice bridge, while the Speed Stingers in Race to the Edge had managed to track the Dragon Riders all the way back to Dragon's Edge. Furthermore, the readiness of the Speed Stingers to cross the ice bridge implies that they knew there would be food upon crossing, meaning they could have known of Berk's existence for quite some time but had no access to it.

Cold Resistance[]

Speed Stingers can adapt to live in cold environments such as the Arctic. A pack of Speed Stingers were encountered in Icestorm Island, and even a pack of them living in the Ice Realm in "Sting It On!".

Diurnal[]

In Dragons: The Nine Realms, it was revealed that Speed Stingers in the Ice Realm have adapted to become active in daylight, as opposed to their nocturnal ancestors.

Weaknesses[]

Lack of Venom Immunity[]

Speed Stingers are not immune to their own paralyzing venom. This was shown in "The Next Big Sting" when some of Speedy's packmates were partly paralyzed shortly after he stung them to protect the Dragon Riders. During "Sting It On!", that weakness still existed when a diurnal speed stinger accidentally struck its packmate while trying to aim at Thunder.

Outside of waiting for the venom to wear off, there is no true antidote or cure for a Speed Stinger sting. That is until the modern era in "Sting It On!", when D'Angelo had the idea to develop one by taking some blood from whoever got stung by one, which meant that back in Hiccup's time, even though Ruffnut and Tuffnut were able to collect the venom in "A Gruff Separation", they didn't have the technology or resources to create one.

Leader and Pack Dependency[]

If the lead Stinger is captured or unable to communicate with the rest of the pack, they lose all their tactical skill and become relatively helpless. Although this doesn't apply to all Speed Stingers like Mala's Speed Stingers and Speedy. Also, like many dragons who live in a pack, a single Speed Stinger can be defeated with less effort.

In Dragons: The Nine Realms, even though Speed Stingers have grown bigger than their ancestors, they are still pack dependent dragons. Also, as seen in "Sting It On!", a Speed Stinger will retreat if it is outnumbered.

Hard Surface[]

Their sharp stingers can't penetrate through some materials like metal or thick wood. Objects included Hiccup's Shield and his prosthetic leg.

Accuracy Limitation[]

Even though Speed Stingers are shown to have precision and accuracy with their tails, if something obscures their vision or if they can't see their targets, they can miss their mark, and sometimes even hit unintended targets. This was shown in "Sting It On!", when Feathers used her cloaking ability to trick the rest of the Speed Stinger pack to sting each other.

Injured or Broken Leg[]

Since Speed Stingers mainly use their quick reflexes to catch unsuspecting prey and to avoid other predators, a broken or injured leg leaves the dragon alone and vulnerable, as seen with Speedy.

Weak Spots[]

Similar to Night Furies, Deadly Nadders, and other dragons in "Hobs and Saw", when Hobs bit onto the Speed Stinger's tail to defend D'Angelo and his dad, once he applied enough pressure to cause it pain, it rolled over and fled. This suggests that it could either be one of their weak spots, or the dragon knew better not to mess with those that are friends of Hobgobblers.

Behavior and Personality[]

The Speed Stinger is described as the Velociraptor of the dragon world, being extremely intelligent and cunning. These dragons are ravenous scavengers that will often steal from other dragons and Vikings, but they probably also hunt, though whether they hunt large or small prey is unclear. They live in packs led by a Lead Stinger and have a hive-like mindset. They hide in the shadows during the day and come out to hunt at night. The Lead Stinger makes all the decisions, and the pack follows it wherever it goes. Without it, the pack becomes useless. When attacking, they leap in the air and use their stinger to paralyze their victims. Any member of a Speed Stinger's pack, even if the member in question is a human or other dragon, would be very loyal to its pack and protect them all costs, even from its own kind or its previous pack.

Despite their aggressive and hostile nature, lone Stingers can actually be very timid, as shown in "A Gruff Separation", and will actively run away from potential threats. However, if the dragon knows it has the upper hand, it will not retreat and try to defend itself.

As nocturnal dragons, these creatures sleep in dark, remote caves throughout the day, and wake up the moment the sun sets. These pack dragons sleep in large numbers, mainly for defense. Like the Stormcutter and Night Fury, Speed Stingers are able to hang themselves or sleep upside down like a bat. Due to their high metabolism, they sleep throughout the entire day to conserve energy as they expend close to all of it when they hunt.

These dragons are incredibly aggressive, seemingly untrainable. They are resistant to the technique of approaching them slowly and then placing a palm against their snout. Though this seems to be true for most adults, these dragons, due to their speedy reflexes and hostile nature, are very unpredictable. It is nearly impossible to tell when they will strike.

However, they do have a softer side. They are incredibly protective of their leader, young and other pack members. Often displayed when the pack goes to great lengths to save a downed leader, and the latter likewise. They will even go in search of their missing young across several islands. But these dragons have been shown to respect their pack's opinions. If a member chooses to side with an opponent or leave the pack, the leader and the rest of the pack will come to a unanimous decision to let him or her be.

As shown by D'Angelo in "Hobs and Saw", if a lone Speed Stinger is injured and the person can prove they're not a threat by slowly approaching the dragon and allowing it to sniff them, it will let that person tend to its wounds and leave them in peace. Also, these dragons can be calmed down if they are stressed or have a tough time with a new environment by a person that forged a relationship with them, as seen with Pete's Speed Stinger Jerry.

Training[]

Speed Stingers were said to be too aggressive to be trained. However, in School of Dragons, it is revealed they can be trained, though only at a young age.

During an Icestorm Island quest, the Headmaster decides to train a Speed Stinger since they can't fly. He is unable to do so, even though the player does earn the trust of the pack from a previous quest. Another Icestorm Island quest reveals that Speed Stingers will not be aggressive if one earns their trust, such as returning a lost juvenile of their kind.

In "The Next Big Sting", Hiccup trained an adolescent Speed Stinger, Speedy, for a short while before he returned to his pack.

If trained, Speed Stingers will stay to protect their trainer, even if it means leaving their old pack. Any friend of their trainer would be considered a pack member, and even when a trained Speed Stinger does not like an individual (for example, Speedy to Snotlout), it would remain to protect the individual if he or she is considered as a pack member.

If a human proves that they're not a threat, a Speed Stinger will calm down and let itself be approached so it can be helped. One can earn a Speed Stinger's trust by slowly approaching it while allowing yourself to be seen to prove that you're not trying to sneak up on it. They also can be trained with time and patience. If the dragon developed a bond with someone, they will recognize and calm only around their trainer.

It is also quite possible that, if they are found as an egg, the Speed Stinger can be trained like any other dragon hatchling, as they will believe you are their parent or alpha.

The Speed Stinger made its first physical appearance in "Frozen", when an extreme blizzard that froze the ocean. While Hiccup and Toothless were searching for Trader Johann, they could see a pack of these dragons running beneath them, on the frozen sea. It later turned out the Pack had taken over Berk, and paralyzed most of its citizens, including Stoick, Snotlout, and Meatlug. Ultimately, Toothless and Hiccup managed to lure the Stingers away from Berk, by capturing their leader, the Lead Stinger, taking it back along the path and luring the other Speed Stingers to follow until Hookfang — ridden by Snotlout with Gustav Larson acting as his arms due to his paralysis — was able to melt the path and leave them trapped.

Dragons: Race to the Edge[]

Season 1[]

Main article: Speedy

In "The Next Big Sting", the gang found an injured adolescent Speed Stinger. After much consideration, the gang decided to bring it back to Dragon's Edge. After Fishlegs nursed it back to health and trained it, the Speed Stinger grew close to the gang, except for Snotlout and Ruffnut. The Dragon Riders named the Speed Stinger Speedy. Fishlegs then learned that Speed Stingers evolved webbed feet to travel from island to island. Meanwhile, Speedy's pack hopped from island to island in search of him. Ruffnut and Snotlout, enraged by Speedy's aggressive behavior towards them and stinging their dragons, decide to kidnap and abandon him. Fortunately, the rest of the gang caught up, only to see that Speedy's pack had arrived. After defeating them, Speedy grew closer to the entire gang. He reluctantly left the riders and joined his pack after some persuasion.

Season 3[]

In "Stryke Out", a fighter Speed Stinger was seen captured in a cave, along with several other wild dragons. It was later seen been knocked out by a Triple Stryke in the fighting arena. He was presumably freed along with the other fighter dragons at the end of the episode.

In "Last Auction Heroes", the Dragon Hunters also captured several Speed Stingers for their dragon auction on their island. All of them were freed when Hiccup and the gang arrived.

In "Defenders of the Wing, Part 1", Mala told Hiccup that she would only trust the dragon's judgement of him. Throk then pushed him into a nest of Speed Stingers. He attempted to train them by reaching his hand out, but the Speed Stingers attempted to strike him and cornered him. However, Toothless swooped in and blasted at the Speed Stingers, sending them scurrying away.

Season 6[]

In "A Gruff Separation", Ruffnut and Tuffnut take the Thorston Induction Trials that were "administered" by Gruffnut. Their first task is to collect Speed Stinger venom. The Twins successfully find a few lonely Speed Stingers and obtain the venom at the same time.

Dragons: The Nine Realms[]

Season 5[]

In "Sting It On!", a Speed Stinger pack stings and paralyzes two Snowtails. Later on, Olivia heads into the Ice Realm in order to find some more Dragonsite. But after finding some, she gets stung and frozen by the same pack. Later, the Dragon Riders go looking for her, and Alex notices that some sensors had been knocked over and that something was setting them off very quickly. They then find Olivia frozen, and end up ambushed by the Speed Stingers, who manage to sting Eugene, Plowhorn, Wu and Wei as well, the rest of the riders get everyone to safety. Later, when Alex tries to fix one of the sensors a Speed Stinger had paralyzes her too. Tom was then able to use Alex's Tablet to set off the sensors to distract the Speed Stingers while getting everyone out. However, the Speed Stingers find them escaping and end up stinging Thunder and Webmaster. But one of the Speed Stingers accidentally stings a fellow packmate showing Tom that they're not immune to their own venom. So Tom and Feathers attempt to trick them to sting each other. One accidentally runs into the sinkhole, and while Sledkin tries to go down there herself, the Speed Stinger stings her. When Sledkin is brought back up, she becomes frozen as well. Soon enough, when the venom of the paralyzed victims wears off, the last Speed Stinger runs away, allowing the others to escape.

In "Deep Freeze", while being confined in the infirmary, Sledkin states that there is a large creature on the loose, and everyone at ICARIS is at risk. She is referring to the Speed Stinger that stung her.

Season 6[]

In "Sledkin Stakeout", while angrily attempting to defend herself that she wasn't responsible for trying to kill the Dragon Riders with the cave-in, she mentions the time she got stung by a Speed Stinger to make her look like the victim.

Season 7[]

In "Hobs and Saw", a Speed Stinger pursues D'Angelo Baker, his father, and an injured Hobs. The dragon corners them, and Philip tries to go head on with it, but he gets headbutted by the Stinger who is about to attack the Chief. However, Hobs grabs the Stinger by its tail and tugs on it until it shrieks in pain and runs off. Despite its attack, D'Angelo approaches the Stinger gently to show that he wanted to treat its injured tail. Sensing the boy's good intentions, the dragon allowed D'Angelo to apply some pain-numbing ointment, leaving them on good terms.

Season 8[]

In "The Great Foster Fake-Out", in order to protect dragons from the threat of Jörmungandr, Tom brought some of them to Rakke Corp in an attempt to get the Rakke employees to take care of them, in which one of these dragons was a Speed Stinger. Pete took a liking to the Speed Stinger, and despite Tom's warnings that the dragon is a fast runner, he decided to take him in. However, during Mr. Rakke's visit to the research facility, the Speed Stinger got out and started running parallel to Mr. Rakke's ATV. Fortunately, he did not see the dragon, and Jun and Eugene managed to take Mr. Rakke in a different direction than the dragon. Later that day, Tom and Olivia brought all the dragons, including the Speed Stinger, to the lab, where they pushed them into the elevator and took them to a higher floor.

Comics[]

The Eel Plague[]

After accidently dropping the Dragon Eye in a shallow area of sea at Dragon's Edge, the Dragon Riders attempt to pull it out, but the water is infested with eels. Fishlegs recalls that Typhoomerangs eat eels, so the riders set out to Eel Island to find one. When Hiccup and Fishlegs land, they are immediately chased by a pack of Speed Stingers.

Games[]

School of Dragons[]

The Speed Stingers were introduced with the "Icestorm Island" Expansion and can be found living on Icestorm Island, running in packs. Later, these dragons were available for riding. Its Titan Wing was made available on July 3, 2018. Speed Stingers were also seen in the Hidden World during the "Curse of the Hobgobbler" Expansion.

Trivia[]

  • The Speed Stinger strongly resembles the Stinger from the How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular. The resemblance and name similarities are notable enough to hint that the dragons may be of the same species, just in different forms of telling the story of the Franchise.
  • The Speed Stinger's roar uses the same sound effects as the Velociraptors in the Jurassic Park films.
  • Although the Speed Stinger did appear in the Dragon Manual in the first film, it did not appear in the short Book of Dragons.
  • Speed Stingers are one of the few dragons that do not have a fire type; however, in School of Dragons, they shoot a type of acid. This is most likely due to many features in the game requiring a dragon's fire power. This is also a reference to the fact that Speed Stingers use internal energy for their leg muscles; while fire breath requires a lot of energy, acids do not.
  • Despite Fishlegs saying one drop of their venom can freeze a human or dragon in an instant, it took six Stingers to paralyze Stoick. This could mean their venom can be counteracted by either sheer adrenaline, body size, or both. This dragon's venom may act a bit more slowly the larger the victim it's acted upon, such as when Stormfly received a single sting, it took a few seconds to paralyze her completely. Also, when the first Speed Stinger attack happened, it took four Speed Stingers to instantly paralyze a Deadly Nadder that they had cornered.
  • Speed Stingers are the only dragons to lack both flight and a breath weapon, effectively making them similar to dinosaurs (except their venomous tails).
  • The Speed Stinger resembles the fictional dinosaur species Acceraptor from the TV show Terra Nova, since they both have sharp weapons at the end of their tails.
  • While Speed Stingers are untrainable when full-grown, they can be trained at a young age.
  • While the Speed Stinger is clearly based on the Velociraptor, its forearms resemble those of a Tyrannosaurus rex.
  • Speed Stingers are very similar to Night Terrors.
    • Both hunt in packs.
    • Both are led by a leader.
    • Only the lead dragon has a distinct appearance.
    • They are both nocturnal.
    • Neither know what to do without the leader.
  • The Speed Stinger egg looks very similar to a snail shell. They could also be based on ammonite fossils.
  • The Speed Stingers from Race to the Edge are a subspecies of the Speed Stingers seen in Defenders of Berk, due to their water running ability and being slightly smaller.
  • When the Speed Stingers were first released in School of Dragons, there existed a glitch in which the player could make them fly.
  • It is possible that Speed Stinger venom is the same paralyzing chemical as the Flightmare's mist.
  • The Speed Stinger is the first dragon that is not immune to its own venom, the second being the Deathgripper.
  • The Speed Stingers that appear in the Hidden World are Titan Wings.
