Plot[]
In a dark and sinister area of the Hidden World, Buzzsaw searches for his "death dragon". At ICARIS, Jun searches for clues about the Dark Realm in her collection of mythology books and reveals to the other riders that the dragon Buzzsaw is looking for in the Dark Realm is called the Jörmungandr, and is the apex predator of all dragons. However, she still needs to decipher one last rune to find the location of the Dark Realm, and it turns out Eugene borrowed the book holding the answer to use as a coaster. With the book, Jun is able to find the way to the Dark Realm, and brings them to the valley they traveled through when Thunder previously disappeared. When it is clear the group is still having problems cooperating, D'Angelo proposes a truce to their arguments until they stop Buzzsaw from finding Jörmungandr. The group avoids the obstacles they faced last time until they find the Crystal Whip guardian, which they realize was actually the guardian of the entrance to the Dark Realm, lying injured in front of the entrance. D'Angelo finds one of Buzzsaw's poison darts on the dragon, and treats it with the antidote he made. Tom hopes that they can still catch Buzzsaw before he finds Jörmungandr, and the group enters the Dark Realm.
Upon entering the realm, the group sees some Terrible Terrors lighting a red type of Dragonsite that forms a path that takes them deeper into the realm. As the group keeps moving, they begin arguing again and becoming aggressive. When they reach an area filled with tunnels, the group's arguing leads them to each take a separate path, but they all lead back to where they entered. When tensions between the group reach their peak, D'Angelo finally reaches his breaking point, and lashes out at everyone by harshly insulting and criticizing the others. But when he says that he wished that he never met his friends, he immediately stops himself and regrets what he said. Alex realizes that the realm itself is making them hostile, and Jun figures out the steam from the red Dragonsite is the source. Everyone gets some distance from the Dragonsite, and D'Angelo admits they need to finally overcome their differences as riders and friends if they are going to stop Buzzsaw. Eugene then vents his frustration about how everyone else has been putting other personal interests above the team: D'Angelo's been too focused on the dragon hospital, Alex spends too much time online, and Tom and Jun have been distracted by their relationship. He points out that they can't be a team if they don't try to be a part of it, and that he was the only one who never abandoned the team because he thought he was finally part of something special, and it's something that can't be taken away; but concludes that their personal desires are why everything fell apart. Realizing Eugene is right, everyone apologizes for letting themselves drift apart and not trying harder to stick together. The kids finally reconcile, and the team is reformed.
The riders find a massive cave with a giant barred door, which serves as a cage where the Jörmungandr is trapped, but discover that Buzzsaw had gotten their first when they find one of his flags. Tom discovers the Strike Class symbol on top of the cage and realizes Hiccup must been the one who locked it away. Thunder finds a strange lock mechanism that his snout fits perfectly in, but no one can figure out how it opens. Buzzsaw ambushes the group and reveals his plan to get through the cage: the Sky Torcher he caught and tamed by using its Flame Thrower pack as bait. The Sky Torcher attacks, and the group is quickly overpowered. When Tom is cornered by the Sky Torcher, Thunder takes desperate action to save him by unlocking the mechanism using his retractable teeth. The cage opens, and the giant serpent dragon suddenly comes out and drags the Sky Torcher inside the cave, severely wounding it while Buzzsaw runs away in terror. While Eugene warns the other riders they have to leave before the Sky Torcher comes back, Tom is more concerned about Jörmungandr's escape, and how it's currently running wild in the Hidden World.
