Reed is a plant that appears minimally in the DreamWorks Dragons Franchise.

Description[]

Reed (Typha) is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Typhaceae. It is composed of over 30 species; the one seen in the franchise is most likely the Common Cattail (Typha_latifolia).

Reeds are mostly semi-aquatic, with only a few species being fully aquatic. The most recognisable characteristic of reeds is the giant oval-shaped brown spike located on the female flowers, which has the role of attracting insects for pollination. When the plant becomes ripe, the spike slowly disintegrates into fluff, allowing the seeds inside to be blown by wind currents.

Function[]

In the franchise, reeds only serve a decorative purpose, often accompanied by other plants, such as water lilies.

In real life, many species of reed are edible to humans if properly cooked. Some species, including the Common Cattail, also have medicinal uses.
