Biography[]

Prior to working at ICARIS, during his teenage years Philip apparently used to get into trouble with his friends which caused a lot of big problems and makes him regret those decisions. Eventually he served time in the Army Rangers and married fellow soldier Angela. The two had a son, D'Angelo who eventually took a passion into helping animals and though Philip tried to support his son's passion he knew the potential D'Angelo possessed and hoped one day he would follow in his foot steps and become an army ranger like him.

At some point his wife Angela suffered a permanent injury to her spinal cord, rendering her confined to an automatic wheelchair.

Sometime later, he joined the Rakke Corp as chief of security for Project ICARIS.

Studying the Kullersen Fissure[]

In "First Flight, Part 1", Philip Baker was tasked with taking the recently arrived children of Rakke Corp. employees for an induction session. He particularly emphasised that they should stay away from the fissure. Tom Kullersen, contrary to his instructions, was looking at the fissure from an under-construction gantry platform attached to the Project ICARIS Station. An earthquake hit, causing a welding Drone being operated by Linda to impact with the underside of the platform. The platform collapsed into the fissure, taking Linda with it. Tom saved Linda from falling into the fissure by sounding an alarm and throwing her a rope. Both Linda and Tom were then pulled to safety by Philip Baker, chief of ICARIS Station Security.

In "First Flight, Part 2", Philip found Tom running near the Fissure and brought him to his mother. The following day, he discussed with Olivia the behavior of her son and she promised that Tom wouldn't cause any more trouble.

In "A Hole New World", Philip was setting up perimeter sensors, when a sheep rammed into him. He frowned at the sheep, which quickly ran away.

In "Dragon Club", Philip served dinner to his wife, son, Tom, and Jun. He was confused by the dragon story D'Angelo told about his day but believed it to simply be a game.

In "Featherhide", during the night, Philip patrolled around ICARIS alongside two more guards. However, he was unable to find anyone.

In "Fault Ripper", Philip attended the meeting during which Olivia announced her plan to detonate a bomb inside the Fissure in order to prevent future earthquakes, and volunteered to go with her. The two of them used a probe to be lowered into the Fissure near the spot where the last earthquake's epicenter was located. Philip launched the explosives, which detonated loudly. Unbeknownst to him, a Fault Ripper dragon attacked the probe, knocking both him and Olivia unconscious. The two were saved by Tom and his dragon, Thunder, then dragged to the surface, where the other employees greeted them and congratulated their success.

Argument with his Son[]

In "Downpour", a forest fire broke out in the vicinity of ICARIS, so Philip and Olivia offered to check if there was anyone in danger. While driving through the Burne Lumber Company's logging town, they found Ford, Winston, and Dood, and took them to safety. On the way back, they almost crashed with Leonard Burne, with Philip being visibly shocked that the man was driving towards the fire.

In "The Tangled Web", Philip saved Tom from falling off a windmill while he and D'Angelo were trying to save a bird. He scolded the two boys for disobeying the rules and expressed disappointment in his son's actions. That night, Angela defended D'Angelo in front of Philip, reminding him that he, too, used to break rules in his youth, to which Philip replied that he is worried about his his son's safety. However, the next day, Philip discussed the situation again with D'Angelo, and the two of them were able to make up and reach an agreement.

In "Follow the Lightning, Part 1", Eugene came to Philip asking him if he knew where Jun and the other teens spend their day. However, the man quickly realised that Eugene wanted Jun to do his house chores and refused to help him.

Emergency Drill[]

In "Empty Fireworm Nest", Alex activated Philip's missile attack drill from a tablet, in order to create a distraction, so that she and Jun could sneak into the lab. Unaware of who activated the drill, Philip started giving instructions to other ICARIS workers. He was confronted by an angry Wilma, who was upset for being interupted before being able to study a newly-discovered specimen. Philip insisted that everyone had to play their part during a drill, with no exception.

In "Dr. Catastrophe", Philip was faced with a rampaging sheep that was attacking two ICARIS workers. Fortunately, D'Angelo was able to calm the sheep by trimming its hooves with Philip's multi-tool. Philip praised his son for his veterinary skills. Later that day, Philip overheard Alex talking to D'Angelo about dragons, but assumed it was about the role-playing game "Dragon Club".

Giving Linda Some Work[]

In "The Night Lights, Part 2", due to Alex's tampering with the Security Cameras to prevent them from seeing the dragons they become broken in which Philip thinks the squirrels are chewing through the wiring again. When he finds Linda he questions who she was talking too in which she lies saying that when she's alone she talks to herself, either way he asks for her help in fixing the security cameras but Linda states that she's busy although Philip as her come assist him anyway.

Meeting the Dragons[]

In "Scent of a Dragon", when Olivia triggers an alarm system which shocks her Philip comes by and asks what's wrong until she tells him about the alarm and questions if it's new, Philip then informs her that it's help identify between humans and animals but Olivia questions why until he informs her that being far into the wilderness there's a chance a hungry animal could come after them for food especially since they have kids to protect. He then asks if D'Angelo is with Tom again but Olivia states she hasn't seen them so Philip asks if she does then to let him know.

In "Sting it On!", when Sledkin recruits Philip to assist her in an expedition into the sinkhole in which he readies boxes of gear and equipment for it and even has Eugene help him move it. Later when D'Angelo and Jun distract them to allow Tom and the others to get Olivia from the Ice Realm, Philip became distracted by his son when D'Angelo compliments the winch and reminds Philip that he needs to take an online certification course to operate it which temporarily halts the expedition but when he completes it feels more educated. When he and Sledkin are about to set off and she becomes distracted in talking to Jun about her book Philip looks at D'Angelo for answers but his son pretends he has nothing to say. Philip then reminds Sledkin they don't have a lot of time left so they head out to the sinkhole, eventually they get all the gear set up and Philip lowers Sledkin down into the sinkhole using the winch and a harness. When Jun and D'Angelo arrive and protest about going down there Philip questions what has gotten into them however after Sledkin encounters a Speed Stinger he immediately brings her up to find her frozen and paralysed so he then brings her back to the Big Dome Sick Bay however he thinks a cave snake caused her paralyses.

Physical Appearance[]

Philip's physical attributes are quite impressive, as he boasts a substantial and strong body build. His torso is notably broad, giving him a wide and commanding appearance. Complementing his stature, Philip has striking black hair, a well-groomed goatee, and captivating brown eyes.

He wears a long-sleeved red overall with boots as his work uniform, along with a gray belt.

Personality[]

Philip is a diligent individual who carries out his responsibilities with utmost precision and does not tolerate any misconduct within his jurisdiction. He holds high expectations for those under his supervision, demanding strict adherence to established rules and regulations. Despite his stern demeanor, he recognizes the significance of preserving human lives and occasionally reveals a more compassionate side, particularly towards his wife, son, and occasionally others when circumstances warrant it. His background as a former Army Ranger aligns with his drill sergeant-like approach, while he also holds deep respect for individuals who demonstrate exceptional bravery.

With the threat of Buzzsaw lurking around ICARIS, he became even more strict about how to deal with it. When it came to his son, he viewed the new Dragon Hospital as only a waste of time and that he wanted to shut it down as well as ban dragons from Rakke Town. But the reality was that he was hoping for D'Angelo to become an Army ranger like him instead of an animal veterinarian. Even when a Hobgobbler, which he later named Hobs, tried to bond with him, he kept making excuses to keep dragons out of ICARIS, despite his wife and son trying to make him see a different point of view on dragons. But after being rescued from a Speed Stinger by Hobs, he realized he was wrong about how he had behaved and became proud of his son's determination to be a good dragon doctor and even decided to keep Hobs as a lookout dragon and a friend.

Relationships[]

D'Angelo Baker[]

D'Angelo is Philip Baker's son. Philip loves his son very much and worries that his son might end up making the same mistakes he did when he was a teenager, this leads him to be very strict with his son. Which at times stifles D'Angelo due to his new role as a Dragon Rider. When he almost plummeted into the Fissure, D'Angelo and his dragon saved him and he was left slightly startled upon seeing a real dragon, but also relieved to be rescued. D'Angelo also mentioned to his dad and all Rakke Corp workers that they have rules about not telling anyone outside of ICARIS about what they discover, including dragons, which shows Phil that his son is well aware of the rules in the area.

In "Hobs and Saw", Phil threatens to shut down D'Angelo's new dragon hospital due to the threat of Buzzsaw. He believed that the hospital was a distraction from stopping Buzzsaw and he wanted D'Angelo to follow in his footsteps. This caused tensions to rise between them. When they were pursued by a Speed Stinger in the Ice Realm, they hid and talked about their problems. Phil claimed he wanted D'Angelo to be an army doctor to wear a badge for honor. But D expressed his frustration to his dad claiming that he loves being a dragon doctor and it's what he's good at. When he saw Hobs save his life and his son take care of the injured stinger after it tried to hurt them, he realized how important caring for these dragons is and decided to let the dragon hospital continue.

Angela Baker[]

Angela is Philip's wife. She also works at Project ICARIS. He loves and greatly respects his wife such as when he listens to her when she tells him that perhaps he should be a bit less tough on their son. She even supported her son in convincing Phil to let Hobs stay with them until he healed in hopes of her husband seeing that dragons are loyal to those who help them.

Olivia Kullersen[]

Olivia is Philip's co-worker, and he has a healthy working relationship with her.

May Wong[]

May is the Director of Project ICARIS, and Phil appears to be on good terms with her.

Linda[]

Linda is a worker at Project ICARIS, and he appears to be on good terms with her. That is until he learns she has been secretly help Dr. Wilma Sledkin mine out more dragonsite from the Hidden World that keeps harming other dragons. But he appears to be more angry at Sledkin than Linda herself.

Tom Kullersen[]

Tom is Olivia's son, Philip's co-worker. He originally sees Tom as a nuisance as the latter keeps getting into trouble but after hearing from D'Angelo that he's always there when his friends need help, he starts to see Tom in a better light. He also respects Tom's bravery.

At the end of Season 5, when Tom introduces the dragons to him and all of ICARIS, he is a bit confused at this, but reluctantly gives him a chance to prove that the dragons can be friends. Though after a slightly bad start, Tom realizes how much work it's going to be. After awhile, he seemed to put too much reliance on the Young Dragon Whisperer to handle every dragon problem, until the other riders showed him that they too can handle the problems by working together.

Plowhorn[]

Plowhorn is the dragon of the chief's son, D'Angelo. When Phil fell out of the malfunctioning helicopter and into the Fissure in "Deep Freeze", the young Gembreaker used her Crystal horn to save him and lift him to safety. While he was frightened seeing dragons for the first time, he was also confused by all of this. But at the same time, he became grateful to her for saving his life and happy to see his wife as they race to embrace each other, Plowhorn used her fire breath to create a fire for him and the other ICARIS workers to keep warm.

In Season 6, he gave her and the other riders and dragons tasks to help him with around the station, like carrying delivery boxes to the center of the ICARIS platform.

When Jörmungandr threatened all life in the Hidden World and on the surface, he knew that the kids would be sad if ICARIS closed down and the dragons had to return to hiding. Though he was sad Plowhorn and the dragons did go back to the Hidden World to stay hidden, he still loved Plowhorn enough to keep her existence a secret.

Hobs[]

Phil first met Hobs in the forest where some sensors were placed. The Hobgobbler ate one of them and began to choke. After the chief saved his life, the little dragon took a liking to him. But Phil was unimpressed and wanted nothing to do with him, especially when Hobs kept making a mess of things and setting things on fire with his saliva. They soon had to find Hobs when he ran away to the Hidden World's Ice Realm. After finding him, the three found themselves cornered by a Speed Stinger. Phil distracted it to give D some time to run away with the Hobgobbler, but got knocked down against a snow pile. But Hobs grabbed the stinger by its tail and pulled it until the dragon roared in pain saving the chief's life. Phil was shocked and impressed by this that he decided to give the little guy another chance. He soon became very fond of Hobs and decided to build him his own little dragon house on top of the dome so they could have extra eyes looking for Buzzsaw. He was pretty saddened by Hobs returning to the Hidden World because not all humans could be trusted with their existence, but was willing to keep him secret indicating that his love for the little Hobgobbler was really strong.

Wilma Sledkin[]

While there has been little conversation between them, the Chief seems to hold Wilma in low regard. Since her arrival at ICARIS, Sledkin has often argued with Baker on a number of occasions, with the two maintaining a personal dislike of each other. When Baker and Olivia were in danger from the Fault Ripper's assault, she showed no emotion nor concern for Phil's safety and expressed no relief when he and Olivia were safe. Later on, the chief defied Sledkin's orders to refrain from partaking in evacuating the area outside of ICARIS during a massive wildlife. This implies that Baker, like Olivia and May, is also angered by Sledkin's greed and her placing the value of money over people's lives. He was also angry at her in "Sledkin Stakeout" when the kids revealed that she had secretly went to the Hidden World, despite being on suspension, to mine more Dragonsite and discovered the secret passageway to the dragon world under her dome. As she escaped in one of the station's vans, he attempted to chase her down. It's never seen, but it's likely he was informed by D'Angelo about her death.

Buzzsaw[]

Chief Baker and Buzzsaw first met when the latter was foolishly trying to save his doomed company from a forest fire and the former was rescuing his three lumberjacks alongside Olivia. Like Olivia, he saw Buzzsaw's actions as reckless and suicidal and was dumbfounded by his stupidity. Baker didn't encounter him again, until he attacked Rakke Town. Ever since then, Baker has been cautious of Buzzsaw, considering him to be a dangerous threat to ICARIS. While it's unknown, it's likely D'Angelo informed his dad about Buzzsaw's redemption and they became on better terms.
