Peanut is a leguminous plant mentioned in the short story How to Train Your Hogfly.
Description[]
The peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is legume known for its edible seeds. Unlike most plants, peanuts grow their seedpods underground. They are legumes, alongside peas, meaning that they fix nitrogen in the soil, increasing its fertility. Peanuts are also known as groundnuts, goobers, goober peas, pindars or monkey nuts. They have a high content of oil, leading to them also being classified as oil crops.
Peanuts originate from South America. They have been spread to all other continents (except Antarctica) by humans during the European colonisation of the Americas. Despite containing the word 'nut' in its name, the peanut is not actually a nut. It is, however, classified as a culinary nut.
Function[]
Both in the franchise and in real life, the main usage of peanuts is as food. They are very rich in essential nutrients, and are consumed under different forms, such as peanut butter and peanut oil. Unfortunately, the large consumption of peanuts has lead to an increase in people allergic to them.
