Od is a god in Norse Mythology who is mentioned in the game, Dragons: Titan Uprising.

Mythology[]

Because Norse Mythology and culture has very little written history, Od only appears briefly in the Prose Edda, Völuspá, and the Heimskringla. He is spoken as the husband of the Goddess Freya, whom have two daughters together, Hnoss and Gersemi. His mythological significance is only known to be his connection with Freya. However, in Old Norse, his name "Odr" means "mind", "spirit", or "song" and "poetry".

His story in Prose Edda tells that Od traveled around the World quite a lot, and would be away from his wife for long periods of time. This saddened Freya immensely, who wept tears of red gold and also traveled abroad in search of her husband.

There is much debate by scholars about whether or not Od is actually the God Odin. There is evidence both for and against, and even has bearing on whether Frigg and Freya are actually the same Goddess or not.

Dragons: Titan Uprising[]

This game mentioned Od in the description for the Thunderclaw named Gyllentalon. It takes the folklore of Freya crying tears of gold for her absent husband by adding that one of her tears touched a lizard and transformed it into a golden Thunderclaw. The aboriginal people native to Odin's Grassland left offerings to Gyllentalon until their departure from the area in the hopes of their missing loved ones returning through the blessings of Freya.

The Gyllentalon is one of the few dragons in the Archipelago that had a cult following. Due to the uniqueness of its golden coloration, a folk tale arose among the aboriginal people of Odin's Grassland about this singular dragon. According to the tale, When the goddess Freya was grieving the disappearance of her husband, Od, she wept tears of gold that fell onto an unwary lizard sunning itself on the rocks below. The tears transformed the hapless Thunderclaw into the Gyllentalon, blessed with the grief of the Goddess of Love. The Aboriginal People of Odin's Grassland brought offerings of food to Gyllentalon's lair, in the hopes that their missing loved ones would return through the blessings of the Goddess. The people who held this belief wandered north long ago, but the Gyllentalon remains.
