The Octofin is a gigantic Tidal Class dragon that first appeared in Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Physical Appearance[]

Hatchling to Adult[]

The Octofin has a physique reminiscent of a crocodile, which includes a crocodile-like head with protruding teeth from its snout. Its other striking features include red eyes, multiple dorsal fins that run down on its back, three pairs of fins of different sizes on the sides of its head and neck, and eight tails that resemble the tentacles of an octopus or squid, which are situated along the sides of its main tail. The Octofin also sports green kelp-like tendrils on the sides of its lower jaw and near its nose. It also has long legs with webbed feet on both the front and back legs.

Abilities[]

Ink Smoke[]

Like an octopus, it can emit ink from its whiskers to camouflage itself or to hide from its enemies 1

Like octopi and squids, it can emit ink from the back of its head to camouflage itself or to hide from its enemies.

Prehensile Tail and Tendrils[]

Even with the threat of the Shellfire constantly attacking them, the Octofin brought them back to the surface, repaying the favor of the rescue

The Octofin dragon exhibits eight prehensile tails that bear a striking resemblance to the tentacle-like arms of cephalopods. These tails are equipped with a series of suckers, enabling the dragon to effortlessly grasp and manipulate heavy objects. Furthermore, the dragon possesses independent and movable tendrils that can be utilized to strike at enemies, although they appear to be less dangerous compared to its tails, inflicting minimal harm akin to a gentle smack.

Strength, Combat and Stamina[]

Moreover, the Octofin displayed its exceptional endurance and stamina by withstanding the attacks of the Shellfire 3

The Octofin has remarkable strength, which was demonstrated by one individual that was able to carry the bathysphere which contained the additional weight of three teenagers, using its tentacle-like tails. The Octofin also displayed its exceptional endurance and stamina by withstanding the attacks of the Shellfire, its natural adversary. These feats of strength and resilience are attributed to the Octofin's substantial size.

Intelligence[]

The Octofin exhibits remarkable intelligence, demonstrated by its ability to recognize and respond to assistance. This was evident when it cleverly secreted an ink cloud to conceal itself, the adolescents, and safeguard Tom from the territorial Shellfire. By doing so, it clearly understood the intentions of the Dragon Club in aiding its freedom. This level of comprehension proved critical in saving Tom's life, as he had become unconscious during his attempt to release the captive Octofin by cutting the ropes.

Aquatic[]

As with most Tidal Class dragons, Octofins are able to swim and thrive in the great pressure of the deep depths under the giant sea.

Agility and Speed[]

Despite its size, the Octofin is surprisingly agile and swift in its movements 1

Despite its massive size, the Octofin is surprisingly agile and swift, which allows it to navigate through the water with ease. It can even leap out of water.

Acute Senses[]

Their visual perception possesses the exceptional ability to penetrate the veil of ink smoke, granting them a distinct advantage over adversaries or potential prey. This unique vision also enables them to navigate through environments shrouded in darkness or obscured by smoky conditions with heightened effectiveness.

Behavior and Personality[]

Although much of the behavior of Octofins remains a mystery, they appear to possess a gentle nature, as evidenced by their lack of immediate resistance when captured by Buzzsaw and his associates. These dragons have also displayed intelligence in recognizing when someone or something intends to help them, and they show gratitude by finding ways to repay that kindness. In the episode "In Too Deep", one Octofin quickly discerned Tom's intention to assist and released an ink cloud to conceal their actions from the Shellfire. It then went on to rescue Tom from drowning and aided him, Jun, and D'Angelo in returning to the surface by carrying the bathysphere.

Furthermore, Octofins are highly determined to repay the debts they owe and will persist in their efforts, regardless of the threat posed by rival dragons. They remain undeterred even in the face of relentless attacks from these rivals.

Weaknesses[]

Passive and Serene Nature[]

Despite being a Giant Tidal Class dragon, this species has proven to be easy to capture because of their behavior being similar to whales. Due to their pacifist nature, they are very submissive and will rarely fight back.

Training[]

Training an Octofin is unknown, but it appears that once its trust is gained, such as after someone risks their life to rescue it, it will return the favor and become an ally to that savior.

Season 6[]

In "In Too Deep", Buzzsaw and his goons captured an Octofin after he saw a picture about it in the Book of Dragons. When the Dragon Club attempted a rescue, Buzzsaw and his men used it as a distraction by dropping it in the ocean while still tied up. Despite the riders' dragons efforts to keep it from falling, they were unable to hold its massive weight, and it fell into the ocean, still tied up and unable to move. Tom, Jun and D'Angelo used a bathysphere from ICARIS to rescue the giant creature; however, a Shellfire cuts the rope, sending them all to the bottom of the giant sea.

The Octofin used its ink to conceal them, while Tom sets out to free it, almost drowning in the process. The Octofin saved him by pushing him back to the bathysphere then attempted to help them back to the surface, but the Shellfire aggressively attacked it, preventing it from helping. Thunder fired electrical blasts at the Shellfire, forcing it to leave the Octofin alone, and it took the bathysphere back up to the surface, saving the riders and repaying the favor.

Trivia[]

  • This dragon was initially mistaken to be a Kraken by Jun, meaning it could have been the inspiration behind the myth of the Kraken in the How to Train Your Dragon universe, similar to how some dragons, such as the Featherhide, Bubblehorn, Yetiwing, and Glass Caster, also resemble mythical beings; maybe even Lightning Bird as well for Buzzsaw's opinion of Thunder.
  • The Octofin's design is similar to the Brickleback monster from the 2022 Netflix film The Sea Beast, both portraying a crocodile-like body and possessing tentacles.
