How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

They are the ridiculously adorable offspring of the Night Fury and the Light Fury. It was some debate on what to call them: Day-and-Night Furies, 24-Hour Furies. But in the end, we settled on the Night Lights! [src]

The Night Light is a hybrid of a Night Fury and a Light Fury that first appeared in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

Official Description

The Night Lights are the offspring of Toothless and the Light Fury. They live in the Hidden World and share some abilities of their parents.
Like their parents, Night Lights have powerful plasma blasts. They fire first to warn and only openly attack when threatened.

Physical Appearance

Egg

RoB-Night Lights-Egg

In Dragons: Rise of Berk, Night Light eggs have readily visible scale patterns and are roughly the same shape as other common dragon eggs. They appear to have a base color of black with varying amounts of white speckling.

Hatchling to Adult

Thunder Transparent

A modern adolescent Night Light.

Night Lights have an appearance similar to both a Night Fury and a Light Fury since they are a hybrid of the two closely related species. Some of them resemble Light Furies in appearance, while others resemble Night Furies in appearance. They are piebald in color, and each individual Night Light possesses varying numbers of ear-like appendages, which helps them hear and shows their mood; as well as other small tendril-like appendages around their jaws. Night Lights appear to have small spines on their back like a Night Fury, whilst lacking the single fin of the Light Fury. Their tail flukes seem to be a mix of both parents', being less rounded than a Light Fury's, but more than a Night Fury's. They tend to retain the Light Fury's additional, smaller tail fluke above the main one. Night Lights have blue, green, or turquoise eyes.

In Dragons: The Nine Realms, Night Lights now have a variety of tail fluke designs. Some retain the classic dual fins, but most now possess unique tail flukes. Some, of these 'modern Night Lights', like Thunder, have 3 fins that are connected more fully to the tail, giving them an overall trident-like appearance. Some can also have multiple dual tail fins running down the sides of their tails, a heart-shaped tail fin or even entirely lack tail fins, instead having a vertical webbed sail on the end of the tail. Their first set of upper fins and their wings have gotten much narrower. After the time skip, Night Lights also gain toe pads on their feet just like cats and dogs, another feature that their parent species didn't possess.

Abilities

Firepower

Night Lights are capable of firing explosive plasma blasts very similar to that of their parents' species. As shown by Pouncer in School of Dragons, their plasma blast can also create blinding flash of fire to distract their enemies. The ability appears to be unique to him.

In Dragons: The Nine Realms, the Night Lights' plasma blast has developed to be more electrical. These blasts are so precise they can burn a symbol into a wall. This was demonstrated by Thunder, who used his plasma blast to imprint the Strike Class symbol on a rock. Unlike their Night Fury parent, a Night Light's blast cannot create a massive electro-plasma energetic explosion when it is combined with a Skrill's lightning blast, instead turning into a smaller sphere of electricity at the connecting point of both blasts. As demonstrated by the elder, it appears when Night Light dragon gets older, their electrical blast changes color from purple to blue.

Electrical Discharge

In Dragons: The Nine Realms, the species has the ability to fire electrical blasts from their mouths to blast away boulders and generate shock fields around their bodies. These fields act as EMPS (electromagnetic pulses), disrupting any electronic devices nearby. Adult Night Lights are able store electricity in their bodies to such an extent that they are capable of shocking other objects and creatures through simple touch. They also emit an electric aura around themselves, charge themselves with electricity to fly even faster and leave a trail of lighting for a short period, and can absorb lightning strikes or electrical attacks from other dragons to strengthen their own lightning blasts.

When the lightning blasts of a Skrill and the electrical blasts of a Night Light meet head on, they create a sphere of electricity which shares the two species colors, as shown many times when Thunder and his nemesis battled together in the Silver Crystal Realm of the Hidden World.

Cloaking

Like their parents' species, Night Lights possess the ability of cloaking. Cloaking occurs when their skin heats up, causing their scales to have mirror-like qualities, allowing them to temporarily blend in with their surroundings. It is also possible that a Night Light can use lighting in a similar manner of their parent, the Night Fury, to heat up their scales and go on cloak mode.

Stealth

Outside of their cloaking ability, just like the Night and Light Furies, Night Lights are pretty stealthy as the Night Light hatchlings were able to walk around New Berk without being seen, and Thunder was able to fly around in the sky or in the cave Tom and his mother were exploring without being spotted. While watching from afar, the Elder Night Light was undetected when it spied on the Dragon Club and Thunder in a cave.

Speed and Agility

Night Lights are very fast dragons, as infants can easily keep up with their parents in average flight speed, and even spin in the air with no signs of slowing down. As shown by Shadow in "Night Light Part 1", he could easily fly ahead of his brother Thunder. Adult Night Lights are able to fly at the same speed as Night Furies and Light Furies, as well as inheriting their dive-bombing techniques. Like their parents species they are not only fast in flight but also on the ground as shown by Thunder even though he was hit with a tranquilizer dart after some of it had warn off he was still able to keep up with the group.

Strength and Combat

Even as a baby, Night Lights are strong enough to carry or pin down others of their kind with their claws or on their backs.

Adolescent or adult Night Lights are strong enough to carry a human in their paws, as well as carrying two people on their backs without any trouble. Thunder, an adolescent Night Light, can go toe-to-toe with a Titan Wing Skrill, and is strong enough to push and pull heavy dragons.

Endurance and Stamina

Night Lights demonstrate a great deal of stamina, as they can travel between the Hidden World and New Berk in less than a day without rest, although they do become very tired by the end. Their endurance and stamina seem to increase as they grow older, as Thunder showed no signs of requiring rest or in need of stopping despite being chased by multiple dragons over a long period of time.

Their endurance also allows them to withstand large amounts of pain from physical attacks without serious injuries. This could be seen when Thunder was knocked away by a Fault Ripper's rock-hard skinned tail into a stone wall without any serious damage, and almost immediately getting back up to fight again.

They can also absorb lightning into their bodies without being phased or injured to an extent. But depending on how much lightning they absorb and discharge, they can be left exhausted. In "Deep Freeze", thanks to a Night Light's tough scales, they have some resistance to tranquilizer darts, although Thunder was slightly woozy from the first one, he managed to recover after a while.

Senses

Like their parents’ species, Night Lights have a good sense of hearing, as Thunder heard and recognized the sound of Tom's pickaxe, despite being a good distance away and separated by a stone wall. Night Lights also have good night vision, and are able to see in a dark environment like a cave or the night sky. And just like their parents’ species, Night Lights can also smell danger, which was shown in "The Tangled Web” when Thunder sensed that the Spiderwings were a threat. Their sense of smell also helps them recognize one other, as seen in "The Night Lights, Part 1", when the Mother Night Light and the Elder knew Thunder by his familiar scent.

Swimming

As shown in “Downpour”, Night Lights are known to be good swimmers, as Thunder was able to swim at high speed and hold his breath for quite a while, but like their ancestors, Night Lights do have a limited lung capacity, and will drown unless they have access to air.

Intelligence

Similar to Night and Light Furies, Night Lights display remarkable intelligence, as evidenced by Dart's instant recognition of Hiccup based on her father's drawing and Thunder's ability to recall his dragon class symbol even without direct exposure to it. This cognitive prowess enables them to exhibit exceptional expressiveness and creativity. Thunder, for instance, demonstrated his imaginative capabilities by intricately etching the Strike Class mark, a human symbol, onto a nearby rock using his plasma blast. The Elder Night Light displayed a profound understanding of Tom's deep bond with Thunder, accepting his assistance in repelling the Snow Wraiths and rectifying his mistake. Notably, this creativity appears to manifest from a young age, as young Night Lights possess the ability to draw images akin to their Night Fury parents. Moreover, Night Lights exhibit impressive learning agility, swiftly comprehending human speech and flawlessly executing commands from their human trainers. This aptitude is particularly noteworthy considering that the species has had no direct contact with humans for over a millennium.

Alpha Dominance Display

Thunder demonstrated his formidable electric power when facing off against Deadly Nadders, effectively instilling fear in them and establishing the desired dominance. Some theorists speculate that this distinctive ability could be an inherited trait passed down from the Alpha Night Fury, Toothless, who is an ancestor of Thunder.

There are a number of differences between Toothless and Thunder's respective displays. Firstly, Toothless's Alpha display could only have been unlocked by challenging an Alpha dragon, whereas Thunder's was unlocked while defending his rider from regular dragons. Secondly, Toothless's mouth, nose, and spinal ridges glowed blue while his Alpha display was active, while Thunder did not show signs of any physical changes. Lastly, Toothless's display (and victory) marked him as the King of Dragons, giving him absolute control over any dragon he encountered (with a few exceptions), while Thunder's display seemed to be a temporary assertion of dominance, allowing him to force attacking dragons to submit and leave, but not giving him any lasting control on other dragons. It is still unknown why this ability surfaced so suddenly.

In Ragnarok: Part 2 when Elder Night Light show up and prepare for battle he uses Electric Charge for Aura like Toothless, but his entire body glows like the color of its powered up electric blast, When the Elder Night Light was badly injury during battle with Jormungandr, in his final moments, he passed on his Alpha Mode and his title to Thunder making him the new King of the Nine Realms. Just like Toothless' rank, Thunder can gain help from large dragons like Sky Torcher and Fault Ripper, also his electrical blast powerful enough (combined with Tom's Lighting sword) to defeat the Jormungandr.

Retractable Teeth

In "Rise of Jörmungandr‎‎", it is revealed that Night Lights have inherited the ability to retract their teeth, allowing Thunder to fit his muzzle into the mechanism that locked Jörmungandr‎‎'s cage.

Lightning Absorption

Night Lights can absorb lighting from the sky or from other sources to strengthen their firepower. It's also possible that they can absorb lightning to cloak themselves like their ancestor.

Weaknesses

Chin Scratching

Night Lights also collapse when scratched under a specific part of their chin

Like most dragons, Night Lights tend to become extremely relaxed to the point they collapse when scratched under a specific part of their chin. It can be assumed this weakness was passed down from their parent species, the Night Fury.

Tail Fin Dependency

However, due to the different shape of the tail fins after the timeskip, they appear to depend less on the tail fins to fly

Just like their parents' species, the original Night Lights will be unable to fly if one of their tail flukes was damaged, cut off, or otherwise compromised. However, due to the different shape of the tail fins after the time skip, they appear to depend less on the tail fins to fly, with some individuals almost entirely lacking fins, making it possible that they no longer have this weakness.

Backup Generators

In the modern world, humans have (unknowingly) developed means that can counteract the EMP waves that Night Lights produce

A Night Light's EMP blasts can only short-circuit active electrical devices; as a result, backup generators that were not active during the blast will not be affected, and will enable any electrical device they power to return to function as soon as they kick in.

Confined Areas

Night Lights are confined to small areas when in flight such as in tunnels or caves despite having enough room to fly, they can't access their full dive bombing speed

Similar to their ancestors, when Night Lights are confined to small areas when in flight, such as in tunnels or caves despite having enough room to fly, they can't access their full dive-bombing speed.

Electricity Charge Limit

After absorbing to much energy they will become exhausted and immobile for a bit leaving them vulnerable

After absorbing too much energy, they will become exhausted and immobile for some time, leaving them vulnerable to enemies like Skrills.

Hot Areas

Thunder explored the Fire Realm it slowed him down and he needed to stay hydrated

Similar to how Night Furies doesn't do well in frigid or cold regions, Night Lights show a level of uncomfortableness in areas with high temperatures, as Thunder while explored the Fire Realm, the heat slowed him down and he needed to stay hydrated.

Tranquilizer Darts and other toxic substances

As shown in "Deep Freeze", similar to a Night Fury getting hit with dragon root arrow as Sledkin shot Thunder with a tranquilizer dart, Night Lights will be partially resistant as according to Sledkin "one dart made you woozy, another will knock you out". Like other dragons, Night Lights are also susceptible to the Speed Stinger venom. Thunder after was shot by Buzzsaw with an improvised tranquilizer dart filled with poison made from a plant native in the Hidden World, became immobile and with every hour his health was getting worse.

Intense Focus

Thunder only intended to charge the fuse box but thanks to Sledkins he accidentally destroyed it

Similar to its Night Fury ancestor, Night Lights can also use their electrical blast with pinpoint accuracy however due to the intense focus needed to make a blast, a Night Light can be so engrossed at the task at hand that it may lose sense of its surroundings. This was shown when Thunder was trying to charge the fuse box and didn't notice Sledkin preparing to shoot a tranquilizer dart at him, while Wu and Wei did. When their focus is disrupted, it may cause the Night Light's blast to overcharge or miss, as shown Thunder intended to charge the fuse box, but ended up destroying it out of surprise when Sledkin shot him with a tranquilizer dart.

Behavior and Personality

The Night Lights' behavior falls somewhere in between that of each parent species. They are playful and curious by nature, but fiercely protective when danger is present. This not only extends to themselves, but also to those whom they are indebted to. Like their Night Fury ancestors, if a human rescues a Night Light, the dragon will instantly begin to form a bond with that person, though it will take time for said bond to be fully cemented. They don't appear to be scared of humans and even allow themselves to be touched by them, most likely due to their species' lack of contact with humans.

Like most species of dragons, the primary diet of the Night Lights is fish. They are also extremely picky eaters, forgoing most, if not all, kinds of meat in favor of fish. Similar to their parent species, Night Lights seem to be a mostly solitary species, though they possess strong connections and loyalty towards others of their kind. And can be social with other dragons. However, it is later revealed that Night Lights have become more social dragons. They form tight knit family groups or "Clans" consisting of the Leader and their family members. As shown in Dragons: The Nine Realms, the oldest member of the clan is usually the leader, and in a Night Light clan, all family members greet their leader with respect by bowing down to them. Due to their close family bonds, leaders are more protective of their families, and therefore, are more wary of strangers, like humans or other species of dragons, coming into their clan. But if a human is able to earn the Elder's trust, they will have earned the entire Clan's trust.

They are also known to hold grudges, especially when someone they care about is hurt. A Night Light’s strong sense of loyalty and protectiveness will make it exceptionally hostile to anything that inflicts harm onto its friends or family, and it will go to great heights to “settle the score”. This was seen with Thunder during his battle against his nemesis, the Titan Wing Skrill that was responsible for attacking and getting him separated from his family. During the fight, Thunder continuously challenged the fearsome dragon despite its superior size and strength, demonstrating the lengths Night Lights will go to in order to acquire their revenge.

Night Lights greatly resemble both cats and dogs. Such behavior can be seen when Thunder and his younger siblings lick themselves and scratching themselves along with Thunder's mother caring and protecting her children, just like cats and kittens do. They also resemble dogs and puppies in how they walk in a circle before lying down, and are playful and very loyal when trained, and known to focus on what humans are saying.

According to Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms, by modern times, Skrills serve as rivals to Night Lights, with territorial clashes between the two species being extremely common in the Hidden World due to their similar needs and habitats. It's unknown if trained Skrills get along with Night Lights.

Training

Due to its natural curiosity towards humans, the Night Light appears to be a very easily trainable species. Young Night Lights have been shown to take very strong interest in humans, and are generally very friendly towards them, which, unlike Night and Light Furies, makes them exceptionally easy to befriend.

Adult Night Lights, however, are slightly more hostile towards humans but no less curious about them. Like Night Furies and Light Furies, their ancestral species, adult Night Lights will form emotional connections to any human that rescues them. This could be seen when Thunder rescued Tom from falling into the Kullersen Fissure, after the boy had freed him from a pile of collapsed rocks. This only increased Thunder’s curiosity of Tom, slowly allowing them to bond as they spent more time together.

To truly form a bond with an adult Night Light, a human must gain its trust. One way to do this is by feeding it fish, the dragon’s main diet. Once a Night Light realizes that a nearby human poses no threat, the dragon will allow a bond to be cemented between itself and the human. After the bond is established, a Night Light will be fiercely loyal to its trainer, sharing a powerful emotional bond with them.
