May Wong is a character in the series Dragons: The Nine Realms. She is the Rakke Corporation’s Director of Operations at ICARIS (International Crevasse And Research Investigation Station) and the mother of Jun and Eugene Wong.

Biography[]

Studying the Kullersen Fissure[]

In "First Flight, Part 1", May welcomed Olivia and Tom Kullersen to the ICARIS station, where she briefly discussed the stage of the operation. She left Tom with her daughter, Jun and took Olivia inside. Later, after Tom snuck to a restricted level of the station without permission, May scolded him and confronted Olivia to make sure the boy wouldn't cause any more trouble.

In "Dragon Club", May, Olivia, and Linda analyzed footage received from one of the ICARIS drones. After one of them was destroyed, May scolded Linda for being careless with equipment, threatening to fire her. Olivia then showed May a mysterious shadow the drone captured right before being destroyed.

In "Fault Ripper", May was present at the meeting where Olivia proposed a way to deal with the ongoing earthquakes. May supported her friend's idea, even in front of Wilma Sledkin. She watched as Olivia and Philip Baker descended into the fissure with the help of a probe and made an explosion that stopped the earthquakes.

Visit of Her Son[]

In "Uniconned", May was delighted by the arrival at ICARIS of her son, Eugene. She gave the boy Jun's room and asked her daughter to sleep somewhere else. That night, while sleeping, May was watched by a curious Nibbles, who was quickly lured away by Jun, before the dragon could wake up May.

In “Downpour”, May was present along with Olivia, Philip, and Sledkin when Linda alerted them to a massive forest fire that was ravaging near ICARIS. When Olivia and Philip went to help rescue loggers from the Burne Lumber Company who were still trapped in the area of the blaze, May helped them avoid Sledkin’s notice, who had opposed any rescue attempts. Later on, when the fire began to spread towards ICARIS May ordered the station to be evacuated, while also holding an argument with Dr. Sledkin, in which May criticized her for her prioritization of money over human life. After the fire was put out, May cancelled the evacuation order and celebrated alongside Linda.

In "Follow the Lightning, Part 1", May left her dome early in the morning to attend to her work at the station, but not before leaving behind a list of chores she expected Eugene to finish after he woke up.

Fight With Her Daughter[]

In "Ride or Die", May had entered into Jun’s room while she was reading a book on Greek Mythology that she had received from her father. In the proceeding discussion between them, May expressed her growing frustrations with Jun’s interests in mythology and mysticism as opposed to the business career she desired her daughter to pursue. This led to an argument in which May revealed that she had signed Jun up for an online CEO course against her daughter’s wishes. When Jun opposed her mother’s actions and expressed her desire to not be like her, an increasingly irritated and unimpressed May scornfully insulted her daughter, expressing her belief that she could never survive in the real world with her love of fantasy and myths, before angrily leaving the room, with Jun deeply hurt.

In "Empty Fireworm Nest", May partook in the missile attack drill after the alarm for the procedure had been initiated, which was secretly caused by her daughter’s friend and teammate Alex Gonzalez so that she and Jun could retrieve the Fireworm Glowmer from the ICARIS lab before he could be examined by Dr. Sledkin. During the drill, May found her son Eugene outside the facility. Believing him to be fooling around, May pushed him towards his assigned position, ignoring his statements of having discovered a dragon as merely him having been playing a fantasy game with Jun.

Physical Appearance[]

May is a very short-statured woman of Chinese descent with black and white hair and brown eyes. She wears a long purple winter coat with a white fur collar and a black belt, white boots, black gloves, red glasses, white pearls earrings with red ribbons, and a tall cylindrical hat made of white fur that stretches several feet tall. In some episodes where she's seen without her jacket, hat, or gloves on, she has a white turtleneck shirt and white pants.

Personality[]

May is a very stern and demanding businesswoman who holds very high standards for her employees to live up to. She is shown to be very hard on those who work under her, as she often ridicules them for their mistakes even when it’s not their fault. These standards are not set for her employees alone, but also those around her. Her sternness tends to make her a no nonsense and straight-to-the point individual. Because of this, she tends to possess a low opinion of those she views as absent minded or reckless. This can been seen in her low regard for her chief scientist’s son, Tom Kullersen, due to his impulsiveness, tendency to get himself into trouble, and his seeming lack of focus with his studies. Her sternness also holds a great impact on her skills as a parent as well. May has been shown to be very strict with her youngest child Jun and expects much of her daughter. When these expectations are not met, May is unafraid to harshly criticize Jun, showing a that she can be exceedingly frustrated and uptight whenever her particular standards are not met by everyone around her. Her no-nonsense attitude can also make her extremely arrogant, possessing a “know what’s best attitude”, while also being very condescending towards those who have different views than her, including her daughter.

May is a very down-to-Earth person as well, as she does little to hide her disapproval of her daughter’s interest in fantasy and the supernatural, believing that such things will prevent her from achieving her true potential in life. Unlike Jun, May doesn’t believe in nor have much respect for the concept of fate. Also, like most humans in the modern day, May doesn’t believe in the existence of the dragons either. This has caused her and Jun to have a strained relationship which continues to worsen over time. She is shown to have high expectations of Jun and, as their time at ICARIS continues, May’s dislike of Jun’s mythological and mystical interests continues to grow, causing her to become increasingly abrasive towards her daughter and showing a stern disinterest in her daughter’s happiness. She yearns for Jun to become a businesswoman like her someday and laments any kind of future where her daughter has obtained any other kind of profession.

While she rarely shows it, May does have a softer side, as shown when she was comforting Jun during one of the Fault Ripper’s earthquakes. She is also extremely loving towards her elder child Eugene, whom she dotes on. This love for her son, however, makes her extremely gullible to his lies and left her completely in the dark over how truly spoiled, selfish, and immature he truly was upon arriving at ICARIS. In "Scent of a Dragon" Eugene reveals that May treats her children on how capable she thinks they are, revealing that her strictness with Jun actually means she thinks her daughter is more capable then her brother and her doting on Eugene means that she thinks he isn't self-sufficient. In addition, though May has a strained relationship with the majority of her employees, she does have her personal favorites among her staff, most notably her personal friend Olivia Kullersen. Olivia is the only employee she never ridicules or chastises, most likely due to how Olivia’s findings have always been proven correct and how much money they have made as a result. She also seems to have a similar relationship for ICARIS’s chief of security, Philip Baker, though not to the same extent. Upon meeting the dragons of the teens, she became shocked, but also left quite speechless, seeing how her belief that myths about dragons were nonsense were proven wrong.

Despite her strictness, arrogance, and how hard she treats those around her, May is by no means coldhearted or cruel. Unlike her colleague, Dr. Wilma Sledkin, May recognizes the importance of human life over company profits, and is more than willing to bend the rules and go behind her superiors’ backs if it means saving someone’s life and cheerfully supported Linda's celebration after the forest fires were put out. She also can be speechless when she sees something that proves her beliefs wrong, like when Jun and Eugene introduced their dragons to her in "Deep Freeze", showing her thoughts about Jun's beliefs were wrong.

After knowing the existence of dragons, she adapted her work routine to have dragons in the ICARIS facility, she was willing to listen to Jun's viewpoint of mythology based on reality and she kept her integrity to not reveal the dragons to the world until there is a way to secure them. At the same time, despite her ambitions to find a world renowned discovery in the fissure, it is shown that May has moral composure to stop Sledkin's unethical experimentations on dragons and their ecosystem, having her suspended, then apparently going to fire her after she made a secret tunnel under the floor in her house to disobey May's orders to stay put and for leaving the riders to die in an explosion she caused. Unfortunately, Sledkin escaped in a stolen van.

Abilities, Talents, and Skills[]

  • Business and Management: May is a highly skilled businesswoman, who specializes in project management and work efficiency. It was for this reason that the Rakke Corps made her the Director of Operations at ICARIS.
  • Leadership: May has shown herself to be an effective director of operations at ICARIS. Despite her hardness towards her employees, May remains a capable and levelheaded during intense situations and has often guided the Rakke Corps personal at the station during such times.

Relationships[]

Jun Wong[]

May and Jun have a slightly strained mother-daughter relationship, with May seeing her interest in fantasy as a waste of time. It is shown that May worries about Jun being unable to reach her full potential in life if she doesn’t “outgrow” her fondness for mythology and mysticism. As their time at ICARIS passes, May’s disgust for Jun’s mythological interests continues to fester, causing their strained relationship to worsen. As such, she becomes increasingly abrasive towards her daughter, harshly scolding her for her interests in myth instead of pursuing a business career like the one she possesses. May has also shown to possess a lack of both understanding and trust in her daughter’s skills in life, firmly believing that Jun won’t be able to survive on her own unless she becomes a successful businesswoman like her, showing a certain degree of underestimation and disappointment in her daughter’s character.

This has caused her to continuously disregard Jun’s feelings and to have made attempts to force her into the lifestyle that she (May) envisions for her, rather than a pursuit that would make her daughter happy. Such examples include forcing her daughter to take an online business course without Jun’s consent, despite the obvious unhappiness this caused her. May has also shown herself to be deeply closed-minded in such instances, being both unwilling to listen to and intolerant towards her daughter’s opposition or desires to pursue a career outside of business.

Despite their worsening strained relationship, May does love her daughter very much, affectionately giving her the nickname of “Junbug”. During one of the Fault Ripper’s earthquakes, May was shown attempting to comfort her daughter while both were hiding under a table. By the end of season 5, upon meeting her dragon, she was left startled and shocked seeing that her daughter's belief about dragons existing was proven true.

With the secret now known, Jun had trouble convincing her mom to take her knowledge of myths into consideration. However, the pressure led to her completely fumbling up her speech, but May, though she dismisses the concept, nonetheless attempts to be gentle to her daughter and phrases her words apparently so they did not hurt Jun's feelings. But when she discovered Wilma doing unauthorized experiments involving dragonsite and terrible terrors, she decided to enlist Jun as a consultant to teach her more about how to understand dragons, as long as she finished her schoolwork. This indicates that their relationship is slowly improving. May furthermore believes Jun and the rest of the Dragon Club when they tell her, Olivia and Philip about how Wilma Sledkin left them to die inside a collapsed cave and alongside the other adults, May furiously confronts Sledkin about her ruthless endangerment to Jun's wellbeing, which was presumably the final tipping point for May, who most likely would have fired Wilma, had she not escaped.

Eugene Wong[]

May is shown to be very loving and proud of her eldest child Eugene, whom she dotes on a great deal and affectionately calls “Genie”. She sees Eugene as a "sweet boy", not aware of his true spoiled and immature personality. In addition, she shows some favoritism towards Eugene over Jun at times. This could be seen when she gave him Jun's room in their dome due to how he hates the morning sun, without even asking Jun if she would agree with it or not.

Despite her doting behavior towards Eugene, she still expects him to perform chores around the house when she is not around. She can also be somewhat abrasive towards him as well when she believes he is goofing off, as was shown during the missile drill in “Empty Fireworm Nest”. Upon meeting his dragon, she was left startled and shocked seeing real dragons for the first time.

Olivia Kullersen[]

May is both Olivia’s boss at ICARIS station and a close personal friend of her’s. The two have been friends for many years, with Olivia being her favorite employee and the one of the only one, aside from Chief Baker, that she is never hard on. She is shown to have complete faith in Olivia’s judgement, being one of the few to agree with her plans to blow up the Fissure’s fault line in order to stop the constant earthquakes. In addition, May is always quick to compliment and celebrate Olivia’s achievements for the Rakke Corporation, further showing her deep appreciation for Olivia’s talents and the benefits they reap for the company. Despite this, she feels that Olivia doesn’t do enough to keep Tom under control, and urges her to do a better job.

Philip Baker[]

May gets along well with her chief of security at ICARIS. Like with Olivia, he is one of the few employees May isn’t hard on, showing that she has a good deal of approval in his skills.

Angela Baker[]

Linda[]

Tom Kullersen[]

May is a friend and the boss of Tom’s mother Olivia. Having known him since he was little, she seems to have a mostly low opinion of him due to his recklessness and tendency to get into trouble, having been there the day he climbed into the polar bear habitat of a city zoo. She is also shown to be disappointed on how he hasn’t outgrown such habits eight years later when he moves with his mother to ICARIS. Despite her low opinion of Tom, she doesn’t seem to have any reservations about Jun befriending him, though this is possibly mostly in the hopes that their relationship may help Jun out of her fondness for fantasy.

When Tom introduces the dragons to ICARIS, including her, she's confused about all of this, but Tom assures her that they can be good friends to humans as long as they are given respect and protection. By "Dragons Everywhere", she seems to rely too much on Tom when he becomes the town's "Dragon Whisperer" that she wouldn't let her children or the others have a chance to prove they could help. She begins not only to trust her daughter's judgment on dragons, but also Tom's.

Wu and Wei[]

Wu and Wei are the dragon best friend of her daughter. When she first met the Mist Twister in "Deep Freeze", she was frightened and surprised to see real dragons for the first time. During season 6, she came to care about their well-being and would support the riders in their mission to protect dragons.

When Jörmungandr threatened all life in the Hidden World and on the surface, she knew that Jun would be sad if ICARIS closed down and the dragons had to return to hiding. Though she was sad Wu and Wei and the dragons did go back to the Hidden World to stay hidden, she still loved Wu and Wei enough to keep their existence a secret.

Webmaster[]

Webmaster is the dragon best friend of her son. When she first met the Deadly Spinner in "Deep Freeze", she was frightened and surprised to see real dragons for the first time. During season 6, she came to care about his well-being and would support the riders in their mission to protect dragons.

When Jörmungandr threatened all life in the Hidden World and on the surface, she knew that Eugene would be sad if ICARIS closed down and the dragons had to return to hiding. Though she was sad Webmaster and the dragons did go back to the Hidden World to stay hidden, she still loved Webmaster enough to keep his existence a secret.

Wilma Sledkin[]

Sledkin and May are colleagues who both work for the Rakke Corps. Though they seem to have a stable working relationship, the two don’t like each other personally. May is shown to be disgusted by Sledkin’s greed and her prioritizing of company profits over human life and even once admonished her for this. In turn, Sledkin seems to dislike May for her sense of morality and her favoritism towards Olivia.

When she meets the dragons, she comes to discover how Sledkin has become so obsessed with mining Dragonsite, and seeing how it is harming the dragons, she expresses much anger at the geologist for being selfish and puts her on probation. She also was angry at Wilma for almost harming the riders, including Jun and Eugene, when she used an explosive to mine the minerals which caused a cave-in.

Buzzsaw[]

In Season 8, it remains unknown, but May may likely have been informed of Buzzsaw's reformation and she had forgiven him for his actions.
