The Magma Breather is a medium-sized Stoker Class dragon that first appeared in Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Physical Appearance[]

Hatchling to Adult[]

Magma Breathers have a heavy and rounded body frame with wings that fold up to a small size and open up to reveal their true length when taking flight. They have two tiny wing-like ears on their heads as well as a few small horns, five stubby toes and a pronounced under-bite with two long canines protruding from the lower jaw. Magma Breathers also have variously sized plates along their back with a magma-like appearance. They have a slight resemblance to pigs or wild boars: tusks, pig-like snouts, curly tails, and grunting oink sounds.

Abilities[]

Firepower[]

Or unleash a whole torrent of lava

The Magma Breather can spew out massive amounts of lava, enough to make a river of it. They can precisely control the amount they make, like making little lava puddles to wallow in, shoot a small stream of lava, or unleash a whole torrent of lava. The limit to their lava making is not yet known. And their lava is also hot enough to heat up silver.

Speed and Endurance[]

A Magma Breather possesses a relatively small pair of wings compared to its body size, which inexplicably can carry all its weight and allow to hover slowly, or, when provoked, to fly faster while chasing its target. They also flap both pair of wings alternatively from the back and head while flying. Even while they are in weakened state if they are highly motivated, a Magma Breather can run and fly on short distances.

When provoked, they will relentlessly chase anyone who has disturbed their peaceful moments until they are either gone or worse case, eliminated.

Strength[]

These dragons have a very short temper and it is quite easy to tick them

As demonstrated by one individual, Magma Breathers can easily carry humans on their backs. Though quite ponderous, it is capable of sudden bursts of energy despite their stout frame.

Jaw Strength[]

Similar to Boulder Class dragons, Magma Breathers have extremely strong jaws, being able to crush boulders with ease.

Heat and magma-proof skin[]

Magma Breathers enjoy sleeping and wallowing in their own pool of regurgitated lava

Magma Breathers enjoy sleeping and wallowing in their own pool of regurgitated lava, seemingly unbothered by the extreme heat. The Magma Breather originally came from the Fire Realm, where it is adapted to survive.

Spring-like tail[]

Its tail acted like a spring and pushed him over with ease

When D'Angelo Baker tried to push a Magma Breather from behind, its tail acted like a spring and pushed him over with ease. It also allowed the dragon to bounce up to the top of the fissure after being lifted high enough by the riders.

Intelligence[]

These dragons seems to have a great memory, being able to remember the human who bothered them.

Weaknesses[]

Short temper[]

These dragons are extremely short-tempered and it is quite easy to tick them off enough to chase the offender.

Stubborn Nature[]

These dragons are very willful and getting them to do anything other than what they are doing at the moment or to do something they don't want to do is difficult. Even bribing them with treats won't work. They also seem to hold grudges like many species of dragons.

Magma Blockage[]

Producing extreme amounts of lava is this dragon's greatest strength but also its weakness. If a Magma Breather has its lava maker blocked up, it won't be able to expel its lava, causing it to overheat. Depending on how long the blockage stays in the dragon, despite someone being able to get it out, Magma Breathers can't produce lava right away. The lack of lava can cause them to go into a state of hypothermia, where if they are not brought to an available heat source, they will freeze to death.

Behavior and Personality[]

The Magma Breathers enjoy wallowing in their own lava pools to possibly keep warm or just relax in, much like a pig in a mud wallow. It is a lazy, sedentary species that prefers to stay in one place for long periods of time. It is very difficult to get this dragon to do anything it doesn't want to do, even bribing it with food doesn't work. Though not particularly a hostile dragon species, it can become aggressive when agitated, provoked, or bothered, and when it does get provoked, it is quite relentless in its pursuit of whomever annoyed it. They also appear to have long memories. It also appears to have little fear, even when humans approach, though Magma Breathers have presumably not encountered humans in recent history. It also appears to enjoy some good company, and it can become quite saddened if someone is trying to turn away.

Training[]

Magma Breathers are easy to approach unless someone tries to disturb them. By treating it with gentleness and some snacks, the dragon accepts you immediately due to its laid-back behavior. You can even bring them volcanic rocks, their favorite meal, to bribe them in order to train. Also, this dragon enjoys the company of others who share its disposition and abilities, but if refused, it can enter into a state of depression.

Appearances[]

Dragons: The Nine Realms[]

Season 2[]

In "Magma Breather", Plowhorn led Jun, Alex, and D'Angelo to a Magma Breather in the Hidden World while they were trying to find a way to close the entrance to the dragon world. D'Angelo then figured out that they could use the Magma Breather's lava to fill the entrance, which would then harden into rock. He attempted to move the dragon multiple times, but to no avail. He then attempted to ride the Magma Breather, which only made the dragon mad. The Magma Breather pursued D'Angelo in a fit of rage, and Plowhorn took her rider to the Hidden World entrance, tricking the dragon into shooting its lava there. Afterwards, the Magma Breather returned to the same spot he was in before and rolled in its own lava.

Season 3[]

In "Magma Comes to the Surface", the group comes across the Magma Breather again but this time they discover it isn't feeling well. So the group bring it to ICARIS medical bay to discover that it had a crystal in its lava maker blocking its lava flow, causing the dragon to overheat. They also discover that the Magma Breather doesn't belong in the Crystal Realm. Despite removing the gem upon further examination, they discover that it also blocked the dragon's ability to produce it, causing him to freeze. To save it, the Dragon Club race back to the fissure to get the Magma Breather to the Fire Realm and with the help of Eugene and Webmaster, they were able to save the dragon.

Season 5[]

In "Welcome to the Wonderful of Dragons", the Magma Breather is among one of the chosen dragons to show Olivia after she wished to visit the Hidden World, when collecting it Tom and Jun lured out the Fire Realm with volcanic rocks and D'Angelo doesn't see it he jokes saying they forgot it but gets worried when it walks up behind him and runs away panicking when it starts chasing him. When Olivia saw the dragon she was impressed that it actually produced magma but questioned how and was sceptical about it being safe around, although figured it would be fine if the kids stayed away from him. However it was also under the effects of the Evolved Scuttleclaw's call being disoriented by it. Fortunately, the riders stopped the dragon before things got even worse. The Magma Breather was then returned to it's natural habitat.

Season 8[]

In "The Great Foster Fake-Out", the Magma Breather was one of the dragons rescued from the Hidden World to be safe from Jörmungandr and became one of the available fosters, when two Rakke Employees check him out he accidently belches magma causing them to run away. Feeling sorry and taking pity on the dragon Philip decides to foster it but given D'Angelo's history with it refuses until his father protests that they shouldn't leave a refugee behind, D'Angelo tries explaining that Hobs may not like having it around but is proven wrong when Hobs tries cheering it up. When Mr Rakke is on his way D'Angelo panics with what to do with the Magma Breather until Philip tells everyone to move the dragons into the Hanger however since the Magma Breather doesn't move he's forced to push it all the way there. When they arrive at the Hanger the Magma Breather refuses to go inside so Philip asks D'Angelo to handle this considering he's the Dragon Doctor however D'Angelo is scared to get near it especially after it growls at him. Thankfully when they manages to get all the dragons inside Philip was relived although was very annoyed at the Magma Breather for being so stubborn but the dragon belched some magma out to keep himself warm but the smoke emitting from it activates the fire alarm which opens the doors scarring off all the dragons inside forcing everyone else to go after them. When the alarm turns off and Mr Rakke arrives Philip hid the Magma Breather behind a stack of boxes and lied saying the alarm went off as a routine maintenance check and when the Magma Breather started growling Philip uncomfortably had to say it was him burping and farting due to Angela's taco meat loaf, thankfully Mr Rakke bought the excuse and as they left Philip was relived he believed him but got startled when the Magma Breather belched lava near his foot.

Trivia[]

  • Considering their appearance, magma-proof skin and extreme laziness, Magma Breathers may be related to the Gronckle, Eruptodon and Hotburple.
  • Given the Magma Breather's swine like appearance and its magma abilities, its possible this dragon could've originally been native to Hawaii.
