"Magma Breather" is the second episode of the second season of Dragons: The Nine Realms.
Synopsis[]

Plot[]
Tom discovers his mother is planning to mount an expedition in one of the caves in the fissure, in search for possible gold deposits. He is relieved to discover that the cave is in sector 9, far away from the crystal realm entrance in sector 2. However, Sledkin calls and informs Olivia that she has taken over the deposit expedition, while Olivia has been reassigned to map out caves in sector 2.
To keep Olivia from discovering the crystal realm and the dragons, Tom and the dragon club come up with a plan. Tom will accompany his mom to slow her down, while the others seal off the cave entrance on Olivia's path, and make it a dead end, so she won't discover the dragons. D'Angelo takes charge of his group in an effort to prove his leadership skill, but Jun and Alex aren't as enthusiastic.
Olivia initially rejects Tom's offer to join her expedition, but he manages to convince her using reverse psychology and pointing out how Sledkin has been taking over. Meanwhile, D'Angelo tries to lead the effort to seal the cave, but when he imitates his father's leadership style by yelling and giving orders, it causes the group to make little progress. D'Angelo orders all the dragons to fire at the cave at once, ignoring Jun's protests, and the attempt only causes the entrance to become wider. Thunder leaves to check on Tom, while Plowhorn directs the group to follow her to something that could help the situation.
When Tom and Olivia enter the cave, Tom tries to secretly stall Olivia to buy the others time to seal the cave, while Thunder watches them from a distance. Plowhorn brings the rest of the rider to a new dragon that expels magma. D'Angelo plans to use the dragon's magma to seal the cave, but tries to force it to help him, which only makes it mad and causes it to chase him. Jun then comes up with a plan to use D'Angelo as bait to lure the dragon to the entrance. At Sledkin's expedition, she discovers that there are no gold deposits, and becomes suspicious that Olivia still hasn't returned from her expedition. Tom and Olivia pass through an area filled with geysers, and then have to cross a thin stone bridge. During the crossing, an accident causes Tom and Olivia to nearly fall into a crevice, but they to work together to reach safety. Olivia feels pressure changes, but continues going deeper into the cave, forcing Tom to stall her by digging up a crystal from the wall, which Tom recognizes is from the crystal realm. Olivia is excited to be able to share the discovery with Tom, and Tom, feeling guilty about lying to Olivia, considers telling her about the dragons.
Olivia then reveals that she knows Tom has been hiding something because of his suspicious behavior and asks him what he's been hiding. Before Tom can answer, Sledkin arrives, and her presence causes Tom to keep the dragon secret from her. When they hear a sound coming from near the entrance, Olivia and Sledkin rush to investigate. Meanwhile, Plowhorn uses the Magma Breather's anger at D'Angelo to trick it into firing magma at the entrance to seal it. After the plan succeeds, D'Angelo apologizes for his bossy attitude and decides to lead his own way, not his dad's way. However, the Magma Breather continues to breathe so much magma, that it overfills and floods towards the cave. Just before Olivia and Sledkin can discover the entrance, they discover the flood of magma, and run to escape. Tom runs ahead and asks Thunder to create a route for Olivia and Sledkin, and they all managed to escape from the magma flow. Despite all that happened, Olivia is excited to study the crystal she found with Tom, and trusts Tom that he will share his secret when he is ready.
With the secret safe, D'Angelo apologizes for his attitude again and declares they are all a team. Tom and Jun discover flock of Terrible Terrors hanging around a cluster of crystals, the same kind Olivia retrieved.
