Official Description[]

This large, sturdy Dragon acts as a protector for its smaller cousins. Watch out for bombardment when they form a pack under its wings!
Its booming roar not only disorients victims, but also serves as a call to its kin. Small Shadows flock under its great wings, firing explosive lava in unison.
  Dragons: Rise of Berk
The Shadow Wing eclipses its prey and keeps a special symbiotic relationship with the smaller bombardier dragons that deploy from his massive wings – He flies, they fire! The Shadow Wing represents a rare binary breed – two related dragons working together for a common goal. In this case, that goal is destruction! The small Shadow Wing first presents itself as injured to unsuspecting victims, then lures them to its much larger cousin. This "bait and switch" tactic keep the big Shadow Wing fed and the smaller drones in its good graces. On their own, these dragons are dangerous. But together – they are deadly![1]

Physical Appearance[]

Egg[]

Alpha Shadow Egg

In Rise of Berk, a Large Shadow Wing's egg is similar to that of a Small Shadow Wing. However, it is light green in color and has five dark green spikes on it instead of two.

Hatchling to Adult[]

The Large Shadow Wing is a large green dragon with wide jaws, stocky body, and large wings akin to that of a bomber plane. Its legs are also quite stocky, and it has spaced-out triangular spines that run along its back. The Large Shadow Wing's head also slightly resembles a mix between a whale's and a snapping turtle's.

Alpha Shadow Titan - NBG

Titan Wing[]

A Titan Wing Large Shadow is dark green with red spots all over the body. Additional tail fins grow on its tail, several spikes grow on its head and the wings develop a small claw. It is also larger in size.

Abilities[]

Bomber Formation[]

Large Shadow Wing gains massive frontal prowess

The Large Shadow's most iconic feature is its ability to gather Small Shadows to attach to its wings, firing blasts in rapid succession while the Large Shadow Wing acts as a giant carrier. In this formation, the Large Shadow Wing gains massive frontal prowess and can annihilate almost anything that gets caught in the hail of molten explosives. This makes the dragon look like a large fighter jet.

Deafening Roar[]

The Large Shadow Wing can produce a powerful roar that can disorient its enemies and affect its surroundings

Similar to the Screaming Death and Flightmare, The Large Shadow Wing can produce a powerful roar that can disorient its enemies and affect its surroundings. The roar is also a signal for Small Shadows to attach to the larger dragon's wings to create their iconic bomber formation.

Intelligence[]

The Large Shadow Wing is intelligent enough to give the Small Shadows protection and cooperate with them to take down any potential threat.

Strength, Speed, and Stamina[]

The Large Shadow can carry the weight of ten Small Shadows on its wings easily with no signs of struggle. It's strong enough to tail whip Toothless to injure him and render his tail fin unable to function for a short time; weakening him, allowing the remaining two Small Shadows to catch up.

Despite its large size, the Large Shadow Wing is fast enough to catch up to Toothless, especially when the former still has Small Shadows attached onto its wings. However, it is not as maneuverable than the latter.

Firepower[]

In Dragons: Rise of Berk, the Large Shadow Wing shoots balls of molten lava, similar to Boulder Class dragons.

Smoke[]

Some Large Shadow individuals, such as Smog-bomber, are able to produce smoke from their mouths in order to provide cover for the Small Shadows attached to their wings. These Small Shadows can then fire their lava balls from within the smoke and catch their opponents off-guard.

Weaknesses[]

Lack of Agility[]

Okay, the big one isn't as fast as we are or as maneuverable. [src]
  — Hiccup

Due to their large size, Large Shadow Wings aren't as fast or agile to keep up with smaller dragons like the Night Fury.

Behavior and Personality[]

The Large Shadow Wing is a powerful and fearsome dragon that forms a symbiotic relationship with the Small Shadow Wings. It usually relies on Small Shadows to do its work, but it will take matter into its own claws.

Training[]

One Large Shadow Wing, Snogglewing, is semi-tame because humans brought it food. It became accustomed to them after awhile, and did not show aggression toward them. It has, however, no formal training or trainer.

Comparative Statistics[]

Appearances[]

Dragons: Race to the Edge[]

Season 4[]

In the episode "The Longest Day", Hiccup and Toothless are chased by Baited Breath and her pack and lured to a Shadow Wing. However, they managed to outwit and escape both of these dragon varieties.

Games[]

Dragons: Rise of Berk[]

The dragon also appeared in this game along with its Titan form. However, its name was changed to Alpha Shadow.

Trivia[]

  • In some of the promotional pictures, the Large Shadow Wing was mislabeled as the Submaripper.
  • In real life, there does not exist a species type called a "binary species" as mentioned by a consultant for the Franchise. Though this is irrelevant in a fictitious Franchise, it is possible in real life to have two separate but related species form 'mixed-species' groups for one or more mutual benefits. This occurs in many types of animals such as herding animals, various foraging birds, and even cetaceans. Even closer associations between two separate species is known as Mutualism.
