A Jötun is a type of entity occurring in Norse mythology and is mentioned multiple times in the DreamWorks Dragons Franchise.
Mythology[]
The Jötnar are a poorly defined race of mythological beings in Norse mythology that are on equal footing with the Vanir and Aesir (main pantheon Norse gods). They are often portrayed as opposing forces to the Aesir - chaos against order. Jötnar figure prominently in Norse lore and the main pantheon of gods and goddesses intermingled with and produced offspring with them. Midgard (the earth and human realm) was created from the primordial jötun Ymir.
Jötnar are often referred to in English as giants, but this designation may have been arrived at through words from various languages describing these beings. The jötnar are not specifically referred to as large beings, no more so than the other gods or supernatural beings may be.
