Jellyfish are mentioned in the How to Train Your Dragon Book series, with the first mention in Hiccup: The Viking Who Was Seasick.

Description[]

Jellyfish belong to the Phylum Cnidaria and Class Scyphozoa, or 'true jellies'. Occasionally species in other Cnidarian Classes may also be referred to as jellyfish.

Jellyfish, so called because of their jelly textured invertebrate bodies, are almost exclusively marine animals. They are simply structured, typically consisting of a bell-shaped body with tentacles, and one orifice through which to eat and expel waste.

Some species found in the oceans around Scandinavia include the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), the lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata), and the blue jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii).

Function[]

In the How to Train Your Dragon Book Series, jellyfish are mentioned as descriptors and in exclamations.

In reality, jellyfish are occasionally eaten. They are also potentially dangerous to humans due to their stings and can occasionally disrupt fishing.

Appearances[]

Jellyfish are mentioned in this Children's book as part of the Viking Song that Stoick the Vast sings.

How to Train Your Dragon[]

  — Book 3

How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse[]

As with the previous books, jellyfish is used in exclamation.

Oh jumping jellyfish.
  — Hiccup in Dragonese

Jellyfish are used metaphorically by Fishlegs when - in his berserker state - he insults Gobber the Belch by comparing his intelligence to that of sheep and jellyfish.

I'VE MET SHEEP MORE INTELLIGENT THAN YOU ARE! I'VE MET JELLYFISH WHO COULD OUTPLAY YOU IN A GAME OF CHESS!
  — Fishlegs to Gobber in Book 4
