Jörmungandr is a supernatural creature important in Norse mythology and is mentioned occasionally in the Dreamworks Dragons Franchise.

Mythology[]

Jörmungandr is the son of the god Loki and giantess Angrboda. He is depicted as a serpent-type dragon with poisonous venom. Odin casts him into the ocean surrounding Midgard, the realm of mortals, where he grew so large that he must bite his tail to fit. He only has minor interaction with other supernatural beings and mortals, with his major role foretold to occur during Ragnarok.

Thor encounters Jörmungandr twice before their fated meeting at Ragnarok. In one, Thor is required to perform a feat of strength for the Jotunn king Skrymir. The king disguises Jormungandr as a huge cat, but Thor is still able to lift at least one paw of the "cat" into the air. Jormungandr is so huge, that even Thor can't lift the beast completely. At a second meeting, Thor goes fishing with the giant Hymir. He uses the head of one of Hymir's oxen as bait and catches Jörmungandr. Thor is about to kill the serpent, but Hymir fears the onset of Ragnarok, so cuts the fishing line to allow Jormungandr to escape and return to his position encircling Midgard.

Jörmungandr is fated to meet Thor a final time during Ragnarok, when he looses his tail, causing the world to flood and earthquakes to rend the earth. He will join his father, Loki, and the armies of the giants, in the last fight against the Aesir, where he battles Thor and loses his life, but not before injecting the god with venom and killing him after nine steps.
