Synopsis[]

Stoick the Vast organises the Inter-Tribe Summer-tide Friendly Bury the Hatchet Games, but intentionally doesn't invite the Visithug Tribe and the Danger-Brute Tribe as he believes they would ruin the games. However, Very-Vicious the Visithug, Stoick's cousin and chief of the Visithugs, finds out and surprises Stoick one morning by putting an axe to his throat. Very-Vicious threatens to kill Stoick for upsetting his feelings, but agrees to spare his life if Hiccup can train his untrainable hunting dragon, a Hogfly named Hellsbells. Stoick agrees and the Visithugs leave to hunt Peaceables on Peaceable Country. Hiccup struggles greatly training the Hogfly, as it has a very low intelligence and an energetic personality. Still, he manages to teach it the command 'fetch'.

When the games begin, Dastardly Dangerus the Tenth, Stoick's cousin and chief of the Danger-Brute Tribe, crashes into Stoick's house. He is also upset by the fact that his tribe wasn't invited to the games and declares a Blood Feud. However, he lets go of it once Stoick invites him to join the games right then and there. The two make a bet that the winner is owed a dragon by the loser. Dastardly Dangerus initially wants a Silver Phantom belonging to Valhallarama, but his young daughter Nettle insists that she wants Toothless instead. Toothless is horrified, as Nettle calls him "Sweetie" and hugs and kisses him. The games begin, and by the last competition, the Hooligans and the Danger-Brutes are in a tie. Gobber the Belch instructs the participants of the last race, the Young-Warrior-in-Training-Dash-Down-the-Slalom-of-Death, warning them of the Poison Darters and Throatgogglers that could kill them.

Once the race starts, Hiccup and his Windwalker manages to pass by most of the other young Vikings. Snotlout tries to block Hiccup, and then throws an apple into the gorge and tells the Hogfly to fetch, which the dragon happily does. Hiccup stops Windwalker, letting everyone pass him. He explains the situation to Fishlegs, who urges Hiccup to not go after the little dragon. However, Hiccup has to and the Windwalker dives into the gorge. At the bottom, the Hogfly plays around the Throatgogglers, who wake up from their sleep very confused by the situation. One of the dragons catches the Hogfly, but lets it go when Hiccup nips it with an arrow. Still thinking about fetching the apple, the Hogfly steals a Throatgoggler egg, who looks identical to an apple. The mother wakes up furious and chases after the Hogfly, but it managed to fly out of its reach and return to Hiccup.

Hiccup and Fishlegs return to Berk and finish the race in last place, meaning that the Danger-Brutes won the bet. However, Very-Vicious arrives on Berk before anything can be settled, angry that he wasn't able to find any Peaceables (Hiccup sent them a warning message). He demands to see proof of Hellsbells being trained. Thinking fast, Hiccup makes the Hogfly fetch an apple, which all Vikings laugh at. He then asks Very-Vicious' dragon, Jagtooth, to fetch, but replaces the apple with the Throatgoggler egg. Jagtooth refuses to fetch the egg, so Hiccup asks the Hogfly, who fetches it immediately. Very-Vicious then yells at all his dragons to fetch the 'apple', but none of them do it. Impressed by Hiccup's training, he takes Hogfly and leaves his hunting dragons on Berk, saying he has no use for disobedient dragons. He forgives Stoick and then gathers his men and leaves. When they are out of earshot, Stoick yells at the Visithugs, insulting them.

Dastardly Dangerus reminds Stoick of their bet, and Stoick asks Hiccup to give Toothless to Nettle. Instead, Hiccup throws the Throatgoggler egg in the fire, hatching it. He then presents the baby dragon to Nettle, who changes her mind and demands the hatchling instead of Toothless. Though Dastardly Dangerous is skeptical, he accepts the switch and leaves the island too. Later that day, the tribes involved in the Inter-Tribe Summer-tide Friendly Bury the Hatchet Games hold a feast, during which Hiccup worries about the Throatgoggles coming back for their baby. To his surprise, the flock of dragons ignores Berk and heads straight to the Dungeons of the Danger-Brutes, where the Danger-Brutes are forced to release all their prisoners while battling the dragons and the Throatgoggler baby leaves Nettle to return to its mother. Back on Berk, Hiccup misses Fishlegs gushing over Tantrum, saying out loud how he's going to send her poems. Hiccup thinks of how he truly is worrying too much and the little adventure had a happy ending.
