How to Train Your Dragon is a live action retelling of the original animated film, and is set to release on June 13, 2025. It will be the first of DreamWorks Animation’s films to get a live action adaptation.

Development and Production
Rumors of the live action remake and that Dean DeBlois would be directing it first broke on January 12, 2023 by Giant Freaking Robot[1]. Two weeks later on January 27, insider and influencer Daniel Richtman announced the film on his Patreon[5], resulting in other sites to announce it including MSN[6]. On February 15, Universal added Untitled How to Train Your Dragon Film to their list of upcoming films on their website[7].
Now that Universal had announced it, John Powell announced he was going to be working on its score on his Instagram[3], and reputable sites such as Variety [8], Collider[2], The Hollywood Reporter[9], among others made official announcements as well.
Many of the announcements stated that casting was underway at the time the article was posted. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel of Marc Platt Productions will be helping Dean in producing the film.
On April 6, 2023, MSN announced that filming would begin summer, 2023.

On April 23, 2023, Daniel Richtman again shared on his Patreon[10] that actors Jack Dylan Grazer, Auli’i Cravalho, and Joel Edgerton had been considered for the roles of Hiccup, Astrid, and Stoick respectively. However it was not stated whether or not this was the final decision, and Universal never confirmed this info.
On May 15, 2023, the Film & Television Industry Alliance announced shooting was due to start on June 30, 2023.[11] A few days later, The Belfast Telegraph announced that the film would be produced at the Titanic Studios is Belfast, Ireland.[12]
On May 30, 2023, many high profile sites including Hollywood Reporter[13] and Deadline[14] announced that Mason Thames was the final casting choice for Hiccup, and Nico Parker for Astrid. Mason then confirmed the announcement in a Tweet.
On July 18, 2023, The Belfast Telegraph announced that production of the film had been suspended due to the ongoing writers and actors strike.[15] It is uncertain when production will pick up again.
On November 3, 2023, it was reported that the release date has been pushed back from its initial release date of March 14, 2025 to June 13, 2025.[4]
On January 5, 2024, it was revealed that Gerard Butler would be returning to play Stoick the Vast.[16]
On January 11, 2024, it was announced that Nick Frost would be portraying Gobber the Belch.[17]
On January 24, 2024, the full main cast was revealed: Julian Dennison as Fishlegs Ingerman, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut Thorston, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut Thorston.[18]
On March 4, 2024, it was announced that Ruth Codd would be playing Phlegma the Fierce.[19]
On May 16, 2024, principal photography wrapped.[20] Shortly after, Naomi Wirthner commented on Dean’s Instagram post, to which Dean replied thanking her for being Gothi, confirming her part in the film.
