Plot[]

A few weeks after Buzzsaw's attack D'Angelo is working in the new dragon hospital he set up at ICARIS, when his father finds him and tells him he needs D'Angelo to help him secure ICARIS instead of working at the dragon hospital, which he believes is a waste of time. D'Angelo tries to protest, but Philip doesn't leave him a choice.

Meanwhile, Tom and Jun are practicing for a raid on Buzzsaw's camp to retrieve the dragon book. The other riders arrive to discuss the raid, but D'Angelo is depressed from his father's decision to pull him away from the hospital and can't join the raid because he has to patrol with his father. That night, Philip and D'Angelo get an alert something has gotten into ICARIS and rush on ATV's to where the alert came from. While searching, Philip's ATV bumps into pieces of a broken sensor and his sent flying off his vehicle, but he avoids getting hurt. Philip initially believes Buzzsaw is sabotaging the sensors, but he and D'Angelo discover the source of the alert is a Hobgobbler that D'Angelo realizes is choking on something. Philip gives the Hobgobbler the Heimlich maneuver, and it spits out a piece of the sensor it swallowed. Philip is outraged the Hobgobbler destroyed equipment, but the dragon grows incredibly interested in him, refusing to leave his side. Fearing the Hobgobbler might be disoriented or hurt, D'Angelo takes the Hobgobbler to his hospital with Philip.

At the hospital, D'Angelo determines the Hobgobbler only has a sprained leg and wing and decides to keep him under observation. Philip expresses his disapproval again that D'Angelo is wasting time with his hospital instead of helping him secure ICARIS from Buzzsaw and D'Angelo protests that hospital is needed and Philip can't shut it down, but Philip doesn't want to hear it.

The next day, Tom calls the other riders except D'Angelo to an early meeting. Alex is surprised Tom would intentionally exclude D'Angelo and Tom explains that D'Angelo is too busy with the hospital, and he suggests they conduct the raid on Buzzsaw's camp without him. The others object that raiding Buzzsaw's camp is too dangerous without everyone participating, so Tom instead suggests that quietly infiltrate the camp to steal the book instead of attacking. Tom, desperate to reclaim the book he feels responsible for losing, pleads with the others and they reluctantly agree on the condition they retreat if it the plan goes wrong.

Meanwhile, Philip discovers the Hobgobbler left the hospital and snuck into his house. Angela is amused by the Hobgobbler's antics and D'Angelo realizes that the dragon must have bonded with his father when he saved it from choking. Philip denies this and doesn't want anything to do with the dragon until D'Angelo and Angela convince him that keeping the dragon in their house will help speed of its recover and let it be released quickly. However, the dragon's constant shadowing and antics agitate Philip all day until he kicks it out of his home, leaving the Hobgobbler upset at Philip's rejection.

At Buzzsaw's camp, the other riders spy on Buzzsaw until he leaves the camp unattended and Tom sneaks into the camp alone. Back at ICARIS, D'Angelo discovers his father is signing an edict to ban dragons from Rakke Town and ICARIS and shut down the dragon hospital. D'Angelo explains that he hoped if the Hobgobbler stayed with them for a few days, his father could understand how loyal and loving they could be, but Philip refuses to change his mind. When D'Angelo discovers his father kicked the Hobgobbler out, he fears that the still injured dragon would return to the Hidden World and be vulnerable to predator, to Philip's regret. Fortunately, they discover the Hobgobbler left a trail of its incendiary saliva and follow it to the entrance to the Ice Realm. Philip refuses to let D'Angelo go into the Ice Realm alone, but surprisingly decides to go with him.

Tom manages to retrieve the dragon book, but is forced to hid when his henchmen pass by. While searching for the Hobgobbler, Philip is amazed by the Hidden World and impressed by D'Angelo's determination to find the dragon, believing it is a trait for an army ranger needs. This causes D'Angelo to realize his father only wants to shut down the dragon hospital and ban dragons from Rakke Town because he wants to steer him away from being a veterinarian and become an army man like him. Philip tries to deny it at first, but then reluctantly admits he thought D'Angelo's interest in animals was temporary and that he would eventually follow in his footsteps, leaving D'Angelo outraged. Philip defends himself by explaining his job as a father is to help D'Angelo reach his potential, and D tells him if he really wants to help, he should help him achieve the potential to become a veterinarian. The argument is interrupted when they find the Hobgobbler, but the dragon is angry at Philip for rejecting him. Unfortunately, D'Angelo hears a Speed Stinger nearby, forcing them to take cover.

Tom manages to sneak away from Buzzsaw's henchman but trips a wire trap that alerts them just before he can get away. The henchman attack Tom with crossbows, but the others come to his rescue at the cost of Tom dropping the book. Buzzsaw returns and unveils a giant ballista he built using the illustrations from the dragon book which he uses to force the riders to retreat.

While hiding from the Speed Stinger, Philip realizes how much D'Angelo has accomplished when the latter mentions he developed an antivenom for the Speed Stinger's stings with Olivia's help. Despite Phil trying to express his opinion about his son's interests, D'Angelo confronts his father and tells him he has his own life and goals and that he can make a difference even if he doesn't follow in his father's footsteps. When the Speed Stinger finds them, Philip fights it to protect D'Angelo, but is knocked aside and quickly cornered. However, the Hobgobbler saves him by tugging on the Speed Stinger's tail until it roars in pain and runs it off, causing Philip to finally understand the bond the dragon had with him and he decides to revoke his plans to keep dragons out of ICARIS. D'Angelo manages to further impress his father by calming down the Speed Stinger and treating its injured tail.

Later, D'Angelo helps treat Thunder and Feathers for the minor injuries they got trying to get back the book. Tom thanks D'Angelo for coming up with the hospital and promises not to leave him out now that Buzzsaw has reinforced his camp. Philip has grown closer with the Hobgobbler, who he names Hobs, and plans to make him a lookout for intruders, including Buzzsaw.
