Hazel Gonzalez is a character in the series Dragons: The Nine Realms. She is a Rakke Corp biologist stationed at ICARIS as well as the wife and colleague of Carla Gonzalez, and one of the two mothers of the Dragon Club rider Alexandra Gonzalez.
Biography[]
Studying the Kullersen Fissure[]
In "Featherhide", Hazel and Carla encouraged their daughter to go outside with them and catch fireflies, and was disappointed to find that Alex was still afraid of nature. Later, when Hazel and Carla returned to their dome, they were pleasantly surprised to see the other teenagers from ICARIS and congratulated Alex on making new friends. Hazel went to the kitchen to prepare popcorn for a movie night and noticed something wrong with the microwave. Seeing that Alex felt uncomfortable in her presence, Hazel left her daughter with her new friends and resumed catching fireflies with Carla.
In "Fault Ripper", Hazel, Carla, and Alex took cover together when an earthquake struck ICARIS. They were all present at the meeting during which Olivia Kullersen proposed detonating a bomb in the Kullersen Fissure to stop the ongoing earthquakes.
Meeting Eugene Wong[]
In "Follow the Lightning, Part 1", Hazel and Carla were taking care of their garden, when Eugene Wong came to them, asking them if they knew where Alex and the other teenagers were spending their time. The two women realised the boy was up to no good, so they didn't offer him any details, instead reminiscing of the time they met while playing a video game. After Eugene left, Hazel remarked that he was an "interesting child".
Fascinating Discovery[]
In "Empty Fireworm Nest", Hazel consoled her wife after Carla found Alex's room empty. She suggested that her daughter was having fun, even if she was not with them. Later that day, after Alex returned home, Hazel was shocked to see a strange lizard that Carla caught in a jar and suggested bringing it to the lab for further study. After analysing it alongside Carla, Hazel started to grow attached to the creature, naming it Glowmer. She and Carla both agreed to keep Glowmer in their dome.
After a while, Jun burst into their room and told the pair that Director May Wong requested their presence. Hazel and Carla left quickly, with Glowmer remaining in the care of Jun and Alex. However, the two women soon found out that the girls lied to them and took Glowmer outside of the dome. Just then, Linda arrived and took Glowmer to be analysed by Wilma Sledkin. Hazel and Carla gave him away and scolded Alex for lying. Even so, Alex explained herself, telling her mothers that she wanted to release Glowmer back into the wild, as he appeared weak and unhappy in captivity. Hazel and Carla agreed with their daughter. They later helped distract Wilma as Alex and Jun took Glowmer out of the lab.
Helping Olivia[]
In "Cold Open", Hazel grows concerned as Olivia grows obsessed and frustrated in figuring out the Dragonsite crystal and even informs Carla, after Olivia declines their offer to go lunch with them to study the crystal Hazel and Carla leave still concerned about Olivia.
In "The Decoy", while the kids get a tour of the lab Olivia tells them Carla and Hazel are studying a rock specimen discovered deep in the fissure in which Hazel states it contains deep ocean minerals which reminds her and Carla of something similar they found in the ocean, when Alex states she was sea sick for five months when they discovered it Hazel hugged her daughter saying she was a trooper
Meeting the Dragons[]
In "Scent of a Dragon", in the Nature Realm when the riders talk about revealing the secret to the adults Alex wishes to reveal it so her moms can be reunited with Glowmer. At ICARIS Olivia was about to tell Carla about the dragons Hazel interrupts them with news that Linda and Murray are dating in which she and Carla start gossiping over the news that was supposed to stay secret, in which she also asks Olivia to not tell anyone either.
In "Deep Freeze", in the Dragon's Lair as the team discusses whether the secret should come out Alex states that her moms miss Glowmer and she wants to reunite him with them. Later at the ICARIS emergency meeting as Philip addresses how the winter storm is getting worse he instructs everyone on what to do in which Carla and Hazel grab and use blankets to keep the lab samples warm and prevent them from freezing over. Later as the Helicopter starts flying out of control Carla and hazel witness this and become really worried after Olivia falls out and become shocked after seeing Thunder rescue her then Feathers and Wu and Wei grab and hold the helicopter up, and after D'Angelo and Eugene return with Plowhorn and Webmaster and the dragons safely land down in front of everyone at ICARIS in which Carla and Hazel were really surprised by but also wanted Alex to explain herself about the dragon secret which causes Feathers to turn invisible shocking them even more.
Living With Dragons[]
In "Dragons Everywhere!", some of the stray Dragons coming into Rakke Town trample through Hazel and Carla's garden so they head over to see if Tom can do something about it but leave after Olivia demands everyone leave Tom alone. Later after the other Riders get rid of the stray Dragons everyone is impressed by them also Hazel and Carla are very proud of Alex and even wave to her.
In "Break in Case of the Emergency", Carla is one of the ICARIS employees chosen to attend the mandatory ICARIS Leadership Success Series trust training exercise in which she along with some other adults leave ICARIS for the night and head to a hotel to do trust exercises with the others. When while doing trust exercise Carla is teamed with Sledkin to do a trust fall but since she didn't know how to do them she them Sledkin ends up falling onto the floor, when the training ends early she along with the rest of the adults head back to ICARIS before tomorrow in which she tries apologising to Sledkin who isn't happy with her, when she does she and Hazel head back to their dome.
In "Poison Control", when D'Angelo thinks the Speed Stinger Antivenom might cure Thunder he mentions Hazel being one of the people that developed it.
In "In Too Deep", after Buzzsaw attacks ICARIS and threatens everyone to stay out of the Hidden World, like the other adults Hazel demands to know why the Riders didn't inform them of the psychopath.
Joining Eugene's Team[]
In "In the Cards", when the Typhoomerangs fly and descend over ICARIS Hazel joins the rest of the ICARIS Employees in evacuating Rakke Town.
In "Eugene's Lean Mean Extreme Dream Team", while the Gonzalez family were enjoying playing cards together with Feathers and Hazel even compliments Feather's card playing skills but then Eugene barges in shocking them and ruining their game and the Hazel scolds Carla for swearing at Eugene in Spanish but lies to him saying she it was nice to see him. When Eugene asks Carla and Hazel to join his new dragon rider team, Alex protests to the idea however Carla and Hazel think it's a wonderful idea and join him. While Eugene does his speech Hazel nudges Carla to pay attention, when Carla tries cleaning Eugene's face Hazel pulls him away saying he's doing his speech but embarrasses him. After Carla gets Nibbles off Eugene's foot she and Hazel think of him as adorable. When the training begins Eugene has Hazel use Webmaster to blast at a target at first she doesn't know what she's doing and then gets carried away making him blast everything in sight. After Alex scolds Eugene stating he doesn't know what he's doing and makes him realise that he disbands the team so Carla and Hazel head back to ICARIS.
In "404 Alex Not Found", when wanting to apologise to Alex by getting her tablet fixed the Riders take it to her moms to see if they can help and Hazel assures them Alex will be grateful when they return it fixed, after the tablet comes back online she and Carla are politely greeted by Wendy.

Physical Appearance[]
Hazel is a tall woman with brown hair and green eyes. She wears blue glasses.
She wears a long sleeved green overalls with boots as her work uniform, alongside a black belt.
Personality[]
Like her wife Carla, Hazel is an optimistic and carefree person, who enjoys spending quality time with her family and playing outdoor activities like catching fireflies at night. She is also a loving mother as well, having a close bond with her daughter Alex. Both she and Carla, however, were deeply worried regarding Alex’s agoraphobia and how it has impacted her social life. Despite this, Hazel showed remarkable patience towards Alex’s fears and was never demanding towards her, despite her deep desire for to make friends.
Upon Alex’s initiation into the Dragon Club and her newfound friendships with her fellow riders, Hazel was shown to be exceptionally happy and has shown approval in her daughter spending time with ICARIS’s other children.
Like her wife, Hazel has a very deep soft-spot for animals she finds cute, becoming exceedingly doting towards them. She is also shown to take her position as a biologist quite seriously, especially in regards to the animals she is assigned to study. During these analyses, she is shown to always put the animals’ health above all else, and is even willing to bend the rules or even go behind her superiors’ backs to ensure their survival. This was shown when she aided Alex in retrieving Glowmer from Dr. Sledkin’s custody and returning him to the wild after noticing his failing health while in captivity, despite her strong attachment to the little dragon.
Hazel also appears to be fairly perceptive, as she could immediately tell that Eugene Wong’s polite behavior was simply an act to hide his immaturity.
Abilities, Talents, and Skills[]
- Biology: Hazel is a talented biologist, possessing extensive knowledge on the behavioral and biological functions of various animal species.
- Firefly Catching: Hazel and her wife enjoy catching fireflies at night as one of their favorite pass times. She is shown to be capable in catching them without hurting them.
Relationships[]
Alexandra Gonzalez[]
Hazel is shown to have a very close and loving relationship with her daughter. Despite this, she and Carla were deeply worried about Alex’s fear of the outside world and are often saddened when this often prevented her from spending quality time with them when they attempted outdoor activities. Hazel was also deeply worried about Alex’s lack of friends, which was also caused by her agoraphobia.
In “Featherhide”, however, when Hazel and Carla saw that Tom, Jun and D'Angelo came to their dome, both were shocked but overjoyed, thinking Alex have finally made friends. Since Alex’s initiation into the Dragon Club, she overcome much of her fears and has developed strong bonds with her fellow riders, which has left Hazel exceptionally happy, knowing that her daughter is maturing and forming bonds with others.
Despite this, Hazel can be strict with Alex when she feels she has too. This was shown when she became furious upon discovering that Alex and her friend Jun had lied to her and Carla in order to snatch away the Fireworm, Glowmer, they were studying. Despite this, she quickly forgave her daughter after realizing that her intentions were to protect the dragon and return him to his rightful place in the wild. She was even willing to help Alex and Jun retrieve him from the ICARIS research center, by distracting Dr. Sledkin for them, giving them the chance to return Glowmer to his flock.
When she and Carla finally met their daughter's dragon, they were slightly upset saying that she would have a lot to explain, but were also shocked upon seeing Feathers turn invisible. Soon, they both gave a little grin, which may indicate they will come to accept Alex's friendship with the young featherhide.
Carla Gonzalez[]
Carla is Hazel's wife with whom she shares a very devoted and loving marriage with. Hazel and Carla first met each other while playing “Horticulture Shock” together, a post-apocalyptic video game. Shortly following this, the two fell in love with each other and became colleagues for the Rakke Corporation. They greatly enjoy each other’s company and are rarely seen apart at ICARIS. One of their favorite past times is catching fireflies at night.
Glowmer[]
Glowmer is a small Fireworm dragon that was shown to Hazel after he was caught by Carla in their dome, though both assumed him to be a strange new species of lizard rather than a dragon. Like her wife, Hazel immidately became fond of Glowmer, becoming very doting towards him, while also being deeply interested ascertaining his true nature. Her affection for Glowmer was so strong that she was not only willing to return him to the wild despite her attachment to him but was also secretly willing to help sabotage her superiors’ attempts to study him. This was due to recognizing his failing health while in captivity, in addition to recognizing that he truly belonged with his flock where he could be properly cared for and nursed back to health. Hazel and Carla’s assistance ultimately resulted in Glowmer being successfully liberated from the Rakke Corp before his examination by Dr. Sledkin, and with him being reunited with his flock, which also saved the small dragon’s life. Though Hazel still misses him, she acknowledges that being in the wild with his own kind is what is best for Glowmer, taking comfort in him being both safe and happy.
While she knew he was back where he belongs, she hoped one day that she and Carla would one day see him again. Now that the dragons secret is out to all of ICARIS, she now has a chance to possibly do so.
When Jörmungandr threatened all life in the Hidden World and on the surface, she knew that she would be sad if ICARIS closed down and the dragons had to return to hiding. Though she was sad Glowmer and the dragons did go back to the Hidden World to stay hidden, they still loved Glowmer enough to keep his existence a secret.
Tom Kullersen, Jun Wong, D'Angelo Baker, and Eugene Wong[]
Hazel first met Tom, Jun, and D’Angelo in “Featherhide” when they found them talking with Alex in their dome. Thinking they were her daughter's new friends, both Hazel and Carla warmly welcomed them and did everything to make them comfortable, even offering to put on a movie for them to watch and give them some alone time with Alex. Hazel is very grateful to the Dragon Club for befriending her daughter and helping her mature into a brave young woman. She is shown to think highly of them and highly approves of Alex spending more time with them in their “Dragon Club game”. Unlike many of the other adults at ICARIS, Hazel is shown to possess a positive opinion of Tom despite his tendency to get into trouble.
By “Empty Fireworm Nest”, Hazel, unlike Carla, showed no signs of resentment or jealousy towards Alex’s friends when their daughter began spending more time with them than at home. Instead she was shown to be overjoyed at her daughter’s growing maturity and developing socialization. This briefly changed, however, when she and Carla caught Alex and Jun lying to them in order to snatch the Fireworm they were studying. Though Hazel was initially furious, she realized that Alex and Jun’s intentions were noble and quickly forgave them. She even assisted them in rescuing Glowmer from Dr. Sledkin. Since this event, Hazel continues to be supportive of Alex’s relationship with the Dragon Club, acknowledging the positive impact they have had on Alex both socially and morally. She was also surprised when everyone, including her, met the dragons and learned what Dragon Club is really about. But Tom assures her that dragons can be their friends is they're shown respect and protection.
Feathers[]
She and Carla meet their daughter's dragon for the first time in "Deep Freeze" where they rescue Olivia and Phil from falling into the Fissure after the helicopter malfunctioned. They both demanded Alex to do a lot of explaining, which spooked Feathers into turning invisible, and that in turn surprised them. Despite this, they were willing to give the young Featherhide a chance to show she can be a good friend to them. Since then, Feathers has shown such great love and respect for Hazel that she feels part of the Gonzalez family now.
When Jörmungandr threatened all life in the Hidden World and on the surface, she knew that the kids would be sad if ICARIS closed down and the dragons had to return to hiding. Though she was sad Feathers and the dragons did go back to the Hidden World to stay hidden, she still loved Feathers enough to keep her existence a secret.
Webmaster[]
Hazel first met Webmaster, along with all the other dragons, in "Deep Freeze". Initially shocked by this, she was more than willing to give them a chance to be friends. In "Eugene's Lean Mean Extreme Dream Team", she learns how to make him blast his webs at a target and seems to have fun for a while. Even though it didn't last long, both the biologist and the Deadly Spinner respect each other.
Wilma Sledkin[]
Like many of the staff at ICARIS, Hazel holds a low opinion of Dr. Sledkin, another scientist for the Rakke Corp, recognizing how selfish and greedy she is. Hazel was shown to be deeply concerned when Sledkin was selected to carry out the examination of Glowmer for the company, fearing that she would not take proper care of the small dragon during the procedure, especially when his condition was starting to deteriorate. Her concern was so deep that she even briefly resisted Linda’s attempts to take Glowmer out of her hands and back to Sledkin for analysis.
During Alex and Jun’s mission to retrieve Glowmer from the research center, Hazel worked alongside Carla to distract Sledkin so that their daughter could rescue the Fireworm unnoticed outside the center. This ultimately resulted in Glowmer’s rescue and denying Sledkin the glory she sought from his examination. Since then, Sledkin has bored a grudge against Hazel and her wife for their interference.
