How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

Hamsters are small mammals mentioned briefly in the How to Train Your Dragon Book series.

Description[]

Hamsters are small mammals belonging to the Order Rodentia, Subfamily Cricetinae. Their body length ranges from about 2 inches to about 13 inches, depending on species. Most species have very short tails, with the Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) being an exception. Wild types typically come in various shades of brown, grey, and black with white parts. Domesticated varieties can come in a wider color range and combination, as well as different coat lengths.

Hamsters generally eat seeds, nuts, and other plant material, but can also eat insects on occasion. Mother hamsters, like many other species, may cannibalize their young if she feels there are not enough resources, overcrowding, or other stressors that might effect survival. Hamsters are widely known for their large cheek pouches, which extend from the inside of their mouth down the sides of their necks. This gives them a puffy-faced appearance and allows them to store and transport food items. Sometimes mother hamsters will even transport babies in their cheek pouches.

Function[]

In the Book series, hamsters are mentioned only for comparison. Specifically their large cheek pouches are mentioned.

In reality, these rodents are kept as pets, and are even showed. They also make excellent lab animals, as they do not require a large space and breed easily.

Appearances[]

How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse[]

He found a bowl of chestnuts, sucked up a whole mouthful so that his cheeks were bulging like a hamster, and zoomed over the heads of the Warriors, spitting out fire and red-hot roasted chestnuts like a barrage of flaming bullets.
  — Toothless in Book 4

While escaping the Great Hall of the Hysteric Tribe, Hiccup and Toothless begin a food fight. Toothless uses chestnuts as a projectile weapon, combined with his fire breath, after filling up his mouth as full as he could. This made him look like a hamster with its cheek pouches filled.
