The Haddock House is another significant building. It is home to Hiccup and his father, Stoick the Vast. It is larger than most other houses to reflect Stoick’s standing as the village chief. The house sits upon one of the many hills on the Isle of Berk.
  School of Dragons Website[1]

The Haddock House is the domicile of the Haddock family and appears in nearly all media of the DreamWorks Dragons Franchise.

Design[]

Exterior[]

Like many houses in Berk, the Haddock House resembles an overturned ship. It's built on a stone foundation, and topped with drafty dark wood planks. Two dragon status guard cobblestone steps that lead to the stoop, over which is an intricate arch with a mighty dragon roaring at the top. Scale designed shingles cover the steep roof. Two hatches in the roof toward the back can be opened to let in fresh air. A small hatch door is in the narrow rear wall. Sometimes barrels and crates litter the front yard. At one point, Stoick builds a lean-to against one wall as shelter for Thornado.

Interior[]

Living Area[]

Just inside the door is some open floor where the family can set up chairs and stools to visit with company. A little further in is a long fire pit with a removable bar for hanging cooking pots. In the ceiling over the fire pit is a rawhide chimney to funnel smoke outside. To the left is a step in the floor, and a log with steps carved into it leading up to Hiccup's loft. To the right is a tall cabinet. Just past the fire pit is a long table where the family has their meals or hold meetings. To the left of the table, under the stairs, many pieces of meat hang from the ceiling, and crates and barrels of other food are stored on the floor. Against the back wall to the left is a tap of some sort of beverage and a breadbox built right into the wall. In the center of the back wall is a door into a back room. That door is sometimes seen open and other times closed. A few decorative pillars hold the roof up in the main living space. Rafter boards bridge the loft to the front of the house. Many shields, spears, and swords decorate the walls. Various crates and barrels appear on the floor against the walls in some scenes.

Back Room[]

We've never seen inside the back room, but it's safe to assume it's Stoick's bedroom. When the door to the room is open, a drafty wood plank wall can be seen, identical to the walls of the rest of the house.

Hiccup's Room[]

Hiccup's room is a loft over the back half of the house. Toothless slept outside up until sometime after Gift of the Night Fury, and before he moved indoors, Hiccup's bed was against the back wall, with a desk and weapons and inventions of his littering the right side of his room. A small night stand is on the left side of his bed with papers and a candle on it. A chest is at the foot of his bed, and a small cabinet is on the right side of the bed. After Toothless moves inside, Hiccup moves his bed to the far left wall at the top of the stairs and under one roof hatch, while he places a large rock slab to serve as Toothless' bed against the other wall and under the other roof hatch. Many drawings of Toothless and Hiccup's inventions decorate the walls. Random weapons lean against, or sometimes thrust directly into, the walls.

Function[]

To house and protect the Haddock family throughout the entire movie franchise.

History[]

How to Train Your Dragon[]

When Hiccup hears the commotion he opens the door to see Vikings and a herd of sheep running away from a Monstrous Nightmare who then blasts fire at him, so he closes and holds the door shut as fire seeps through the cracks. Hiccup is supposed to stay confined to it during dragon raids for his own safety, but doesn't listen and leaves anyway despite his father and other Vikings telling him to get inside. Soon when shooting down Toothless and getting scolded by his father for causing damage Gobber escorts Hiccup back to his house where before going inside Hiccup opens up that all he wants is to be a Viking yet no one gives him the chance, however unbeknownst to Gobber Hiccup sneaks out the back door to go find the Night Fury. Later when Hiccup returns home he attempts to sneak into the house and up to his room without his father noticing as he fits by the fire, but fails as Stoick senses him sneaking up the stairs. The two then have a conversation at the foot of the stairs where Stoick informs Hiccup that he finally gets to start Dragon Training, although the encounter with Toothless Hiccup doesn't wish to anymore but Stoick states that he must as he hands him an axe for the arena, Stoick then leaves for the expedition to Dragon Island as walks out the house leaving Hiccup worried about everything. After the battle with the Red Death, Hiccup's bed had been temporarily moved downstairs where he recuperates after being injured, and awakens surprised to find Toothless in his house. Excited that Hiccup has woken up, Toothless jumps around the main living space, knocking over various pieces of furniture which annoys Hiccup but Toothless stops as he notices that Hiccup as seen his prosthetic leg. As Toothless helps Hiccup up and gets to the door he opens it to find a roaring Nightmare and immediately slams it shut, but when he opens it he sees its Snotlout and Hookfang flying by which all of Berk now had dragons living peacefully in it. When everyone sees Hiccup is awake they run up the hill to his house to congratulate him.

Gift of the Night Fury[]

As Hiccup is fast asleep in his bed he's woken up by the sound of Toothless banging on the roof wanting to go joy flying, which dust starts pouring down, when Hiccup comes outside he sees an excited Toothless sitting on the roof ready to go flying. Soon when Hiccup finishes Toothless' new automatic tail he goes to his house to show him which Toothless is seen jumping on the roof which a shingle falls off. Later when Hiccup is awoken by banging on the roof he assumes Toothless came back but is disappointed when he simply sees that its just his father hanging Snoggletog decorations. The day after Toothless and the dragons return the house as well as the rest of the village was covered in a thick blanket of snow, Hiccup is once again woken up by Toothless' banging again but is happy and goes outside to greet his friend who got out his old tail as he wishes the only way to fly would be with Hiccup.

Dragons: Riders of Berk[]

In "How to Start a Dragon Academy", Stoick and Gobber have a meeting in the house to discuss what to do as the dragons go nuts around the village causing problems, Hiccup and Toothless listen on the conversation as Hiccup then joins in saying he can dragon situation, reluctantly Stoick agrees and gives him the chance. The next night after a failed day of dragon wrangling Hiccup sits in his room defeated and exhausted which Astrid then comes by to check on him and sees how beat up he is, Stoick then arrives demanding to know how Hiccup's plan is going which he lies to his father saying everything is going according to plan, but his father informs him that Mildew as already gotten the whole village to see his side which they'll most likely want the dragons gone. Eventually when the tribe minus Mildew came around to having the dragons around Hiccup is seen in his room updating the book of dragons which Toothless observes sitting on the window before leaping onto a large stone slab and heating it up with his fire as he rests on it to go to sleep.

In "Viking for Hire", Hiccup sits on the edge of his room questioning what to do as Gobber was put out of a job since no one needed constantly new weapons to kill dragons, he notices his father return home exhausted who explains the tiring day he had which Hiccup pores him a drink and offers for Gobber to help him with his chiefly duties. The next day Stoick returns back home with an even bigger headache from the trouble Gobber gave him so he orders Hiccup to get him a new job.

In "Animal House", when the Twins inform Hiccup that Stoick wants to see him he rides Toothless and heads to his house. Inside them and Gobber discuss the dangerous blizzard approaching which Stoick orders Hiccup to find a way to get the animals to not be scared around the dragons in order for the chickens and yaks to keep making produce. Bucket and Mulch then arrive with bad news that the animals still weren't producing eggs or milk, seeing how bad things were Hiccup agrees but Mulch warns him the storm will hit very soon.

In "The Terrible Twos", Hiccup brings home a baby Typhoomerang which Stoick doesn't agree with keeping until he witnesses the powerful fire blast it did to light the stove which the chief was impressed by and let it stay as well as name it Torch. Although Torch and Toothless don't make the best roommates as he eats all of Toothless' fish and sleeps on his stone bed slab making him sleep on a rafter tie. But in Hiccup's room Torch also plays with Hiccup's Helmet while Hiccup tries to draw him at his desk into the book of dragons.

In the episode "In Dragons We Trust", when Hiccup returns home for dinner Stoick informs him and isn't pleased when he finds out Snotlout crashed through Mildew's roof and tells him the all the Dragon Riders will have to rebuild Mildew's roof without their dragons. Stoick also hands Hiccup his smelly pair of boots to place outside to airdry as its Boot Night.

In "Alvin and the Outcasts", at the house Hiccup talks with his father and Gobber about how he saw Mildew use tools to frame the dragons but tossed the evidence into the ocean, Stoick and Gobber believe Hiccup but without proof they couldn't accuse the old man. Later when Alvin the Treacherous and his Outcasts invade, Alvin seeks out the Haddock House looking for Hiccup whom he believes is the dragon conqueror, he and barges in braking the door down expecting to find Stoick or the conqueror but he finds the place completely empty.

In "How to Pick Your Dragon", after showing his father how useful having a dragon is, the next morning Hiccup wakes up to find Toothless missing. As he walks out his home he sees Stoick had 'borrowed' Toothless to carry out his chiefly duties much to Hiccup's chagrin, as two are seen flying back and forth past the house. The next morning Toothless hides within the rafters to avoid being ridden by Stoick again as constantly carrying a large man all over the island was not fun at all, so as Stoick looks for him Hiccup suggests getting his father a dragon that handle him.

In "Dragon Flower", Hiccup is in his room drawing Toothless into the Book of Dragons but soon finds himself running out of ink, but he leaves for the docks upon hearing Trader Johann had arrived with goods. After Toothless became ill he was brought back to the house where Gobber began brewing his questionable medicine over the stove although Toothless sneezed it away and all over him, Astrid then enters informing Hiccup all the dragons have become ill. Later Gothi comes by the house to see what's really wrong as she examines Toothless and states they're sick because of something new brought to the island. The next morning after getting rid of everything from Johann's ship, Hiccup wakes up and asks Toothless if he's feeling better but the Night Fury plasma sneezes at him. Soon when Stoick and Tornado come home, Thornado sits in a makeshift stable built for him beside the Haddock House although falls sick too. But after obtaining Scauldron venom for a cure Hiccup and Stoick sit in the house watching Toothless and Tornado waiting for them to get better which they eventually do. The next morning Hiccup is continuing his drawing of Toothless into the Book of Dragons and they look out the window happy to see that all the dragons are better.

In "Thawfest", considering Thawfest was now going to involve dragons Hiccup sat in his room working designs and measuring Toothless for modifications for his tail to make him faster which Stoick came by asking what they were up too, considering Hiccup and Toothless were the best rider and Dragon Stoick believed they finally had a shot to win which they were happy that the Jordensons would finally loose to the Haddocks.

In "Twinsanity", when Hiccup returns home he finds his father being fitted with a tight but important ceremonial belt which he realises its time for the annual peace treaty with Oswald the Agreeable, the leader of the unhinged Berserker Tribe. Hiccup assumes he'll be put in charge of preventing the cheif's lunatic son Dagur the Deranged from braking things, but Stoick orders Hiccup and the riders to move off the island for the time being until the Berserkers are gone fearing it they might see this as an act of war.

In "When Lightning Strikes", with the succussion of the perches for the dragons to land on to prevent house destruction Hiccup, Stoick and Gobber sit in the house and toast to their success. But that was interrupted as a deadly lightning storm hit the village which they recall a similar event happened because of a drifter named Jurgen Barnstadt who took a lightning bolt to the head, which Stoick hung as a trophy in their house. Later when building a statue of Thor to make the lightning go away they all witness from the house how the lightning gets much worse, as Mildew turned the village against Toothless thinking Thor was casting his anger because of a Night Fury they march towards the Haddock House where Hiccup and Toothless sneak behind and take off before the mob arrives. Later when its revealed that the metal statue and perches were causing the lighting and Hiccup getting struck by a bolt, the next morning he wakes up in his bedroom grateful he didn't loose another leg. Stoick and Gobber go to check on him assuring the village no longer sees Toothless as a threat but a hero for saving him, which they also go outside to see the statue being taken down which Stoick suggests leaving it at the highpoint of the island away from the village which Snotlout and the Twins then leave in front of Mildew's house. Later people come by the house to pay tribute to the hero Night fury by offering gifts of food which a little girl happily fed him a fish.

In "What Flies Beneath", at night as a Whispering Death digs under the village Toothless was able to sense this from Hiccup's bedroom as he knew his old nemesis had returned although Hiccup tells Toothless to go back to sleep. Later after the fight Toothless got into the Whispering Death Hiccup brought him back into their room and tried to figure out why Toothless was acting so agitated, Stoick comes by to check on them and then assures Toothless that the Whispering Death is most likely gone. When Hiccup goes to sleep, Toothless pretends to sleep too but leaves through the window to go after the Whispering Death, the next morning Hiccup wakes up to find Toothless was gone.

In "Breakneck Bog", after retrieving a chest from Smokebreaths on Breakneck Bog, Hiccup returns back home where he and Stoick open the chest to reveal a toy dragon Valka made for Hiccup when he was a baby, which when it was found Stoick had Johann bring it too them. The two have a father son moment about how Hiccup lost the toy and about how much they miss her, which before going to sleep Hiccup places the toy on top of his bed to be close to her.

In "Gem of a Different Color", after learning Snotlout had brought Changewing eggs into the village and the Twins getting attacked by a pack of them, they head to the Haddock House where they inform Stoick about they're most likely to attack the village. Despite their warning Stoick refuses to retreat and orders them to mount up which Gobber then barges in with late news that the Stones of Good Fortune were actually Changewing eggs and states he always gets the two confused.

In "We Are Family, Part 1", when the council decides to give Hiccup Bork's papers and notes he reads them in his room which he's impressed by all the knowledge Bork left behind, except for the sketches of Bork's neighbours. Hiccup then finds a journal with pages about information of the Night Fury (these were planted by Mildew who was helping the Outcasts), Hiccup sees this as an opportunity to possibly find more Night Furies. After finding more information about the location of the Night Furies' island the Isle of Night Hiccup reads in his room that Furies are aggressive towards other dragons, so fearing for the other riders Hiccup and Toothless leave without telling the others. Later when Astrid goes to house to find Hiccup, Stoick is there carving a wooden duck who says Hiccup was already gone by the time he woke up. Astrid searches his bedroom to find Hiccup's notebook and is able to track and find him.

In "We Are Family, Part 2", after Hiccup and Toothless were rescued by the outcast, they sit in their house burning away the fake Night Fury notes, but Astrid barges him to get moving as they still need to do the Bork Week parade which Hiccup happily goes too.

Dragons: Defenders of Berk[]

In "Live and Let Fly", after the secret Flight Club lesson the riders sneak back into the homes without being noticed by Stoick, which Hiccup and Toothless stealthily fly through the window of their home and immediately pretend to act like they're sleeping. Later when they find out the Outcasts plan to invade Hiccup goes back to house to tell Stoick who's fast asleep but as Hiccup wakes him Stoick grabs Hiccup and holds a hatchet to him but lets go seeing its his son, Stoick then reminds him how he wasn't supposed to be out flying but Hiccup tells him the same goes for him and Thornado who they all saw flying too, they agree to talk later but first must wake the riders which as Stoick opens the door he sees them all outside their house with their dragons. After getting rid of the Outcasts Hiccup goes downstairs for dinner, Stoick tells Hiccup his dislike of disobeying him about the ban but confesses that he was wrong of grounding the dragons as he only wanted to be a good and protecting father. Hiccup understands and then Stoick asks about their Dragon Flight Club, taking an interest. The first and foremost Hiccup explains about the club is it's number one rule, "There is no Dragon Flight Club".

In "A Tale of Two Dragons", when Hiccup returns home Stoick tells his son how he heard that Astrid and Snotlout as well as their dragons were going at it again instead of clearing the fields, Hiccup assures it was nothing and they've probably forgotten about it until separately they both come to the house venting that they refuse to work with each other. Stoick then calmly pressure Hiccup into venting and admitting that he doesn't know what to do with them, Stoick gives him some advice on how to deal with them two ways involving weapons but the third option is to trick them into working together.

In "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", as Smokebreaths steal metal from the village they flew into the Haddock house stealing what they can but one grabs Hiccup's leg trying to take it only to wake him and Toothless exposing the Smokebreaths, another one tries taking Hiccup's helmet but he yanks it away from it before they all leave.

In "Bing! Bam! Boom!", the next morning after encountering some rowdy baby Thunderdrums, Hiccup and Toothless are asleep in bed but are disturbed as the house shakes. Them and Stoick go outside to see the baby Thunderdrums followed them back and were now going nuts around the village playing with their sonic blasts causing countless amounts of destruction.

In "Cast Out, Part 1", as Hiccup returns home Stoick tells him its not easy being a leader which Hiccup agrees and consults with his father in about how to deal with a rebellious Snotlout, Stoick tells him he can't always be a person's leader and friend at the same time and when he becomes Chief one day he must take on the duty of making the right decisions not just for his friends but for all of Berk. When Alvin is rebranded into the prison, at the Haddock House Hiccup and Stoick are having dinner which Hiccup asks why Alvin was banished to begin with which Stoick refuses to talk about and that Alvin will always be their enemy. Later at night a warning horn is sounded waking Hiccup and Toothless as the whole village heads to the arena because of the Berserkers placing Dragon Root in there and releasing the dragons.

In "Cast Out, Part 2, Hiccup stays in his home as he tries to avoid taking on the mantel of leadership while his father is a prisoner of Dagur the Deranged, Gobber comes by telling him its not easy being Chief and tells him when Stoick took over he was not good at it nor did a few people believe in him, and then tells him he's always going to have deal with the Alvins and Snotlouts disobeying. Gobber also tells him Stoick and Alvin were best friends but one day things changed leading to Alvin's banishment, but then Fishlegs barges in telling Hiccup the Screaming Death is closing in and to make matters worse Astrid arrives with a terror mail from Dagur saying they'll murder Stoick if Hiccup doesn't give him Toothless.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • The front door opens from left to right in the first movie and Gift of the Night Fury. Yet it opens from right to left throughout the entire TV series.
  • The small hatch door in the very back is only seen briefly in the first movie. In the TV series, when the back of the house is shown, only a small triangle panel is seen. It's uncertain if this panel is the door, if the door had been removed, or if it's simply an inconsistency between the movie and the series.
  • Though a chimney can be seen from the inside, there isn't one seen from the outside.
  • In "How to Pick Your Dragon", Toothless is seen hiding from Stoick in the rafters directly above the door. But there are no rafters above the door, or throughout the rest of the house big enough for a dragon as big as Toothless to efficiently hide.
