In the Franchise, goatweed appears extremely similar to grass. It has long thin leaf blades and appears to prefer full sunlight in order to grow.
In reality, there are a number of plants that can be referred to as "goatweed", and none are grasses. All are flowering plants, and include: Ageratum conyzoides, plants in the genus Croton, Hypericum perforatum (also known as St. John's Wort), and plants in the Genus Epimedium or more commonly known as Horny Goat Weed.
Goatweed is an ingredient in the cure for Eel Pox, a disease of humans exclusive to the Franchise.
Though Goatweed from the Franchise is not found in reality, all the plants listed above with the same name have been, or are currently in use, as herbal medicine.
In the episode, "The Eel Effect", the Dragon Riders go to Healer's Island to collect ingredients for a cure for Eel Pox. Astrid and Stormfly are in charge of collecting Goatweed. Stormfly cuts a bunch of the grass-like plant with her tail spines, which Astrid grabs without even having to land.
