Physical Appearance[]
Egg[]
A Gembreaker egg is round with rough edges. It has crystal-like structures growing from its upper half.
Hatchling to Adult[]
As hatchlings, Gembreaker dragons are small and round with small crystal horns and clubbed tails.
Gembreakers bear a striking resemblance to beetles, with their wing shells and shared flight patterns. Their back is adorned with these wing shells, allowing them to maneuver through the air in a similar fashion. One of their most prominent features is a large rhino-like horn, composed of crystal, that is remarkably thick and can reach the size of a human. Additionally, Gembreakers possess crystals on their elbows and tails, taking on the shape of morning-stars. These distinct characteristics suggest a primary lineage tracing back to Gronckles and Rumblehorns.
Titan Wing[]
As seen in Rise of Berk, Titan Wing Gembreakers are very similar to their Broad Wing counterparts, although they are larger, and their scales and carapace become a magenta colour with hints of gold. Their horns also change colour, becoming gold.
Abilities[]
Firepower[]
Gembreakers fire a highly flammable, exploding loogie blast, remarkably similar in shape to the lava blast of a Gronckle. When in contact with a dragon's wings it will temporarily set them on fire and briefly render them unable to fly.
Tracking[]
Gembreakers are said to possess extreme tracking skills, likely due to their similarity and possible relationship to Rumblehorn dragons. They can use their sense of smell to track other dragons that have passed after some time, shown by Plowhorn when she picked the scent of Thunder and of the Titan Wing Skrill. Their sense of smell is so heightened that it can feel the difference between rocks and Catastrophic Quaken eggs and follow from vast distances and Realms the Gem Dragonsite, as shown by Plowhorn.
Stealth[]
As shown by Plowhown, if the dragon sits down and covers its body with its back, it looks like a rock formation, which can help it to hide from people or other dragons. Its colors also helps it easily to blend with the crystal formations from the Hidden Realms if it just stays immobile.
Strength and Combat[]
Gembreakers are very powerful dragons, capable of easily breaking through crystal pillars with their horns. A Night Light's electrical plasma blast can weaken them temporarily, but they can shake off its electrical effects moments later.
Gembreakers are tough and combative dragons who will stand up against any intruder, either alone or forming into groups.
As shown by Plowhorn, Gembreakers are strong enough to pull a van, ram through two fully grown men with ease and support on her back the weight of two teenagers and a young Featherhide.
Endurance and Stamina[]
Gembreakers will relentlessly follow any intruder on land, crashing through crystals, and in the air flying after the opponent.
Plowhorn can easily carry her rider on her back, and had also been taking physical offense from three other larger Gembreakers for an unknown period of time. Even when she was wounded, she fought to keep the riders away from approaching her.
Crystal Horn[]
The Gembreaker possesses a secondary weapon in the form of a potent crystal horn. This horn is adept at fracturing and separating shards from sizable crystals during feeding activities, as well as serving as an offensive tool against adversaries. Composed of a crystalline substance, the horn exhibits the ability to shatter entire formations of gems when the Gembreaker charges at them with great velocity. Additionally, the crystal horn possesses reflective properties, allowing it to function akin to a beacon of light. Notably, the Gembreaker can employ its horn as a conduit for conducting and manipulating lightning, as exemplified by the actions of a Gembreaker named Plowhorn. As demonstrated by Shard Picker, Gembreakers are able to stick crystals onto their horns through unknown methods.
Intelligence[]
Gembreakers are shown to have relatively high intelligence, as demonstrated when three larger Gembreakers collaborated to block any escape route from the riders and their dragons. Even Plowhorn came up with the idea to collapse a gem pillar onto the antagonistic Gembreakers to defeat them as well as leading the others to magma breather dragon to help seal off the cave. She also was the one that recognized the Catastrophic Quaken eggs.
Social Nature[]
They will cooperate to find and fight any intruder that they might find in their territory. They will also work with other species like Featherhides, Razorwhips, and Fault Rippers to fight off a dragon much larger than them as seen in "The Sky Torcher".
Speed and Agility[]
Despite their large physical size, these beings exhibit remarkable speed, effortlessly keeping pace with Thunder on the ground and air, and even surpassing other dragons, such as Plowhorn, known for their exceptional flying abilities.
Swimming[]
As shown in “In Too Deep”, Gembreakers are known to be good swimmers, as Plowhorn was able to swim at high speed and hold her breath for quite a while. Gembreakers do have a limited lung capacity, and will drown unless they have access to air.
Weaknesses[]
The horn of a Gembreaker may become lodged within a crystal formation if they collide with it forcefully. Although Gembreakers possess considerable durability, a sufficiently powerful strike delivered to them can cause them to retreat.
The radiant light emitted from their horns can also render them conspicuous and susceptible to predation or adversaries.
Cold Environments[]
Despite a Gembreaker's nose being pretty strong it does have its weakness according to D'Angelo in "Deep Freeze", Plowhorn's nose doesn't last long in the cold despite her doing well in the Ice Realm.
Behavior and Personality[]
Gembreakers are extremely territorial and can be aggressive towards humans and other dragons. Their hostile nature is what makes other dragons wisely avoid them. Larger sized Gembreakers will even terrorize smaller dragons, even their own species. Plowhorn was injured because she was being bullied and attacked by the larger ones of her kind. However due to their social nature they can be befriended and are pretty easy going when they do not feel threatened.
The Gembreaker demonstrates a unique ability to consume fragments from the crystalline formations found within the Hidden World.
According to Rise of Berk, Gembreakers enjoy breaking through crystals despite being able to easily go around them.
Training[]
Due to their aggressive nature, Gembreakers are difficult to train. Being very territorial, these dragons will often attack humans on sight, considering them a threat to their territory. To train a Gembreaker, you need to gain its trust, first through gentle actions and proving that you are not a threat, especially in the case of injured Gembreakers. By healing its injuries, it will warm up and be thankful. Once a bond has been cemented, the Gembreaker will be very playful and loyal to its rider.

Due to some of them sustaining injuries during the chaos, the dragons were placed under the care of D'Angelo who managed to nurse them back to health. Later, during the Dragon Club's battle against the Sky Torcher, the Gembreakers joined together with the other Crystal Realm dragons to aid the Club and force the Sky Torcher and its pack back into the Fire Realm.

In "Ragnarok: Part 2", D'Angelo and Plowhorn recruited the Gembreaker Guards to aid them in the fight against Jörmungandr, while the other riders assembled familiar dragons to help fight as well. When they chased Jörmungandr into the Ice Realm, one of the Gembreakers was knocked down with a Featherhide, so D'Angelo flew down to help them, whilst the rest of the Gembreakers followed Thunder's lead in attacking Jörmungandr. When Buzzsaw arrived and stayed behind to help the injured dragons, the Gembreakers followed the riders up to the surface to stop Jörmungandr, but like everyone else, they unfortunately got knocked down by the Serpent until Tom and Thunder returned with reinforcements.

DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of The Nine Realms[]
Wild Gembreakers first appear in the Bio Realm of the Hidden World, where the player has to fight them off using Thunder in order to advance in the game. It is revealed that the Bio Realm Gembreakers are aggressive because a Fault Ripper has built her nest above their cave, so Thunder chases the giant dragon away in order to save them. The Gembreakers are grateful for this and touch heads with Thunder to express their thanks.
Other wild Gembreakers appear later in the game in other realms as enemies. They come in three variants: the smaller Crimson Gembreakers, regular-sized green Gembreakers, and the stronger Alpha Gembreakers.
Trivia[]
- Despite being of the Tracker Class, they show many characteristics of a dragon in the Boulder Class.
- Oddly enough, the Gembreaker is Boulder Class in Dragons: Rise of Berk.
- The Gembreaker is the first original dragon species introduced in Dragons: The Nine Realms.
- The design of Gembreakers is probably modelled after rhino beetles mixed with the extinct mammal Elasmotherium, due to the size and position of the gem like horn on its nose.
