How to Train Your Dragon Wiki

The Flood Fang is a large Tidal Class dragon that first appeared in the series Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Physical Appearance[]

Hatchling to Adult[]

The Flood Fang is a large aquatic dragon, very closely resembling Manta rays and Basking sharks. They have two very long wings and lack any legs. A tall dorsal fin lines their back along with several spines and a fish-like tail fin.

The Flood Fang has two wide-set eyes high on its skull, as well as a set of gills on its neck. Their mouth is lined with rows of long, sharp teeth, with two especially long, upright tusks jutting from the mouth. Both the inside of the mouth and the gills are an almost fluorescent blue-green color.

Abilities[]

Amphibious Nature[]

Despite its aquatic nature, the Flood Fang is capable of leaving the water and staying in the air for a period of time without drying out.

Water Storage[]

This ability can be an asset when faced with emergencies such as a forest fire

Flood Fangs appear to be able to store large amounts of water in their bodies which can be expelled at a later time. This ability can be an asset when faced with emergencies such as a forest fire.

Speed[]

They can keep up with the Dragon Riders while chasing them airborne and swim fast despite their big body.

Stealth[]

Despite its aquatic nature, the Flood Fang is capable of leaving the water and staying in the air

Thanks to their ability to live in water and air they can launch themselves out of the large bodies of water they inhabit and catch their prey or try to swallow unsuspecting victims with their jaws.

Weaknesses[]

High Food Drive[]

They can keep up with the Dragon Riders while chasing them airborne

Flood Fangs are very protective of their food sources, and they can be easily baited with their favorite meal into following someone.

Behavior and Personality[]

Flood Fangs are sociable with members of their own species and can be found living in pairs, as seen in "Downpour". They primarily inhabit marine environments but can leave the water and survive in the atmosphere comfortably for at least several hours. It is unknown how long exactly they can live out of water, however. Their main diet appears to be small bioluminescent organisms but will willingly partake of land-based prey such as fireflies. They display territorial aggression in their aquatic habitat, possibly due to perceived threat to their primary food source.

Training[]

Not much is known about how to train them, but they are attracted to lights or the bioluminescence of small prey such as fireflies. With a high drive for food, Flood Fangs can be led to different locations or possibly lured to do a task by offering access to a high value food reward. They will, however, display a softer side towards humans in certain cases, like when they're injured.

Season 2[]

In “Downpour”, Tom and Thunder came across two Flood Fangs upon discovering an underground lake within the Crystal Realm. When Tom and Thunder got to close to the water, however, the aggressive Tidal Class dragons attacked, resulting in Tom falling into the water and nearly being devoured by one of them, had it not been for Thunder’s timely arrival. Soon after, when a massive forest fire was threatening ICARIS, Tom attempted to train the two Flood Fangs in order extinguish the blaze before it could reach the station. Initially, however, his attempts to bond with them were unsuccessful, until Alex managed to lure the dragons out using captured fireflies as bait. Using this method, Tom and Alex were able to train the Flood Fangs into extinguishing the fire and save the station. After their victory, the Dragon Club returned the Flood Fangs to their natural habitat, where they and the Club were shown playing and relaxing together in celebration.

Season 3[]

In “It Flies in the Family”, a Flood Fang in the Crystal Realm served as a potential dragon for the rider-in-training Eugene to bond with. Unfortunately, Eugene was too afraid of the dragon to establish a bond with. Sensing his nervousness as he reached his hand out towards it, the dragon became aggressive and ferociously roared at him, causing him to panic.

Season 4[]

In "Cold Open", one of the flood fangs was injured during the battle with the Sky Torcher and Flame Throwers, so D'Angelo looked it over to assure everything was intact, until Eugene carelessly jumped on its back and inadvertently scared it causing it to splash D'Angelo as it swam off.

Season 6[]

In "In Too Deep", as Tom, Jun and D'Angelo were descending into the ocean in the bathysphere to rescue the Octofin, a Flood Fang swims past them which impresses Jun and Tom.

Season 7[]

In "Rise of Jörmungandr", when everyone is at each other's throats and when D'Angelo starts calling them all out he tells Tom that his leadership skills failing so much so that he states he couldn't lead a Flood Fang back to a watering hole.

Trivia[]

  • Despite having a very similar build and wing structure to the Seashocker, Flood Fangs are surprisingly capable of flight whereas the former is not.
  • Flood Fangs are seen eating small bioluminescent aquatic organisms. There are a large number of marine bioluminescent organisms existing, including an approximately three-inch squid that can be found on coastlines and also deeper water, that has blue and green luminescence called the Firefly Squid (Watasenia scintillans).
  • They greatly resemble the Manta Ray in appearance.
