Plot[]
Tom Kullersen and his famous geologist mother Olivia arrive at the Kullersen Fissure, a newly created fissure formed by a passing comet that is deeper than the Marina Trench, by helicopter. They land at Project ICARIS, a research station based next the fissure to study it. Tom wants to check out the fissure, but is interrupted by director May Wong, who leaves with Olivia to show her data on recent earthquakes and leaves her daughter, the myth obsessed Jun, to show Tom around.
Chief of Security Philip Baker arrives to take Tom and Jun to orientation along with his son, D'Angelo, and a shy girl named Alexandra who spends her time on her computer tablet. Philip takes the four on a tour of the station but warns the children they are forbidden from most of the facilities. Tom sneaks off from the tour to check the station's drone fleet and sees something flashing in the fissure. Suddenly, an earthquake occurs and causes a drone to crash into a section over the fissure with an employee named Linda trapped on it. Tom takes action, sounds the emergency alarm, and throws Linda a rope to grab onto before the section falls. Despite his best efforts, Tom is unable to pull Linda up and is nearly pulled down into the fissure with her, but he and Linda are saved by Philip.
Afterward, Olivia learns of Tom's actions, but is disappointed he was trespassing in a forbidden area. May warns Olivia to keep an eye on Tom's reckless behavior. Olivia and Tom move into their new dome living quarters, but Olivia is still upset at Tom's recklessness and disobedience. Tom apologizes for not listening about the danger of the fissure but argues that the are descended from Vikings and adventure seeking is in their blood. The two reach an understanding, but before Tom can explain what he saw in the fissure, Olivia is called away. To try and get a better look at the fissure without getting into trouble, Tom tries to use his drone to view it from afar, but is interrupted by Jun. While talking with Jun, Tom reveals what he's up to and when Jun takes a shot at the drone's controls, it ends up getting stuck on a sheep. After recovering the drone, Jun tells Tom they were fated to come to ICARIS to find some life-changing event.
Tom scours the fissure with his drone and finds the flashing from before coming from a cave, but something hits the drone and deactivates it. He reluctantly goes down a ledge in the fissure to find the drone and finds the cave. When something begins growling from inside, Tom is almost spooked off, but stays when he hears the creature is in distress. He discovers the creature stuck inside and its tail is pinned under a rock. He barely managed to life the rock enough for the creature to free the tail, but the creature bursts out of the cave and Tom is startled almost falls off the ledge. When he gets back up, he gets a good look at the creature: a Night Light dragon, and tries to scare the frightening creature off with his light. The dragon disables his light with a blast of electricity, much to Tom's distress.
