Plot[]

The dragon club tests out their new fire suit made of dragon scales to safely explore the newly discovered Fire Realm and find clues about who dropped the spearhead. Tom tests out the newest suit, but it ends in failure and the group decides to take a break until they can figure out how to make the suits heatproof. When they get back to Rakketown, Eugene tries to get Jun to tell him about dragon club, but she brushes him off.

The next day, Tom comes up with a plan to test the fire suit by training a dragon from the Fire Realm and having it blast the suit, though the others are doubtful of the plan and think it's dangerous. When they sneak off to the Dragon's Lair, Eugene tries to follow them, but loses track of them. While trying to find the kids, he bumps into Buzzsaw.

Tom sets up a trail of fish near the Fire Realm and explains he plans to befriend the dragon by feeding it. The trail lures out a Monstrous Nightmare, but it grows agitated when it eats the last of the fish and flies off. Meanwhile, Buzzsaw interrogates Eugene about ICARIS, which he believes is responsible for creating the "lightning bird." He gives Eugene a description of the "lightning bird" and Eugene realizes it matches Jun's drawing of Thunder from her journal. Tom tries to befriend the Monstrous Nightmare and have it blast the fire suit. His attempts to pressure the dragon only anger it and it sprays Tom with its flammable gel before attacking, forcing Thunder to save him from the dragon's rampage. Even though Tom discovers the fire suit's problem after the Nightmare burns it during its outburst, the dragon goes out of control. When the other try to subdue the Nightmare, Tom tries to get them to stop so the dragon can keep testing the fire suit, but Jun snaps at Tom that he is not treating the Nightmare like a living being. She tells him he can't treat the dragon like a tool and that it is just trying to live its life. Realizing Jun is right, Tom apologizes to the Nightmare for forgetting to treat it with respect and promises not to make it test the suits anymore. When the Nightmare sees Tom's bond with Thunder, it becomes curious and bonds with Tom.

Afterward, the Nightmare becomes much more docile and playful. Tom reveals he discovered the suit's problem: the glue used to bind the suit was what failed and to solve it they need an adhesive that can withstand incredible heat. However, the Nightmare discovers the exit to the fissure and flies out, forcing the dragon club to go after it before it is discovered. Meanwhile, Eugene tries to figure out from Buzzsaw if the "lightning bird" is actually a dragon and if the kids have been seen with them. Suddenly, they hear the Nightmare roaring and follow the sound. While the dragon club tries to bring back the Nightmare, Tom realizes it is still playing and doesn't understand the danger it's in. The dragon flies into the woods where it is spotted by Eugene, but Buzzsaw misses it when he drops his hatchet. Eugene falls off a ledge in shock and Buzzsaw abandons him to go after the noise. To try and stop the Nightmare, Tom jumps on the Nightmare's back from Thunder. Startled, the dragon lights itself on fire, but Tom is somehow left unscathed and calms the Nightmare down and flies it back to the Dragon's Lair as Eugene, frightened by what he saw, flees the woods.

Back at the Dragon's Lair, Alex discovers the reason Tom wasn't burned was because the flammable gel he was previously sprayed with has hardened and become fireproof, which could be used to fix the suits.
