Astrid Hofferson is a female Viking warrior and dragon rider of Berk.

Early Life[]

Hgf

Five year old Astrid

Astrid grew up alongside the other children of Berk and was taught from a young age to be a tough, strong and brutal dragon-killing warrior. From an early age, Astrid began working on restoring her family's honor as well as to earn validation as a fighter, and the respect of the tribal elders. During a flashback in "Fright of Passage", it was revealed that on the night of the Aurvandil's Fire, five-year-old Astrid attempted to take down the Flightmare who was terrorizing the village, by herself. She was quickly stopped by her uncle, the well-known Fearless Finn Hofferson, who told her this was not a battle for her just yet. Finn then decided to confront the dragon on his own, leaving his niece watching in concern from afar.

Astrid didn't see the outcome herself but heard from onlookers that her uncle froze in the Flightmare's presence. She considered stepping in but was held back by Gobber who informed her that her "wee axe would be useless against a dragon such as the Flightmare". Unable to accept what had occurred, and the shame bestowed upon her family's name, Astrid settled to plan for vengeance for the next time the Flightmare would appear in ten years, in the Dragons: Defenders of Berk television series.

While her favorite uncle's demise certainly weighs in, Astrid's Viking warrior status is primarily based on the Hoffersons being a decorated warrior family.[1]

She was involved in the annual Snoggletog Pageant along with the other children of Berk, one year of which Snotlout hurled a rock at her head. However, once older, she still holds fond memories of the pageants from her childhood.

Dragon Training and Ending the Dragon War[]

Astrid: "Hiccup, we just discovered the Dragons' Nest. The thing we've been after since Vikings first sailed here. And you want to keep it a secret?! To protect your pet dragon?! Are you serious?!"
Hiccup: "Yes."

After being recruited to put out fires during a dragon raid, Astrid helped along with Snotlout Jorgenson, Fishlegs Ingerman and the twins, Ruffnut Thorston and Tuffnut Thorston, while Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III marveled at her skill, and how much "cooler" her job was than his. After Hiccup was sent home by his father, Astrid- along with the rest of the group- mocked him for his failures.

Astrid's first introduction in How to train your Dragon

Later, Astrid joined the other students in Dragon Training, along with Hiccup- much to their dismay. During their encounter with a Gronckle as their first lesson, Astrid proved herself to be the star pupil as the other students were knocked out of the lesson one by one. She was shown to take pride in her family name and aspire to the station of a great warrior. Later, in the Great Hall, the other students mocked Hiccup's performance and Astrid too did not hesitate to criticize him.

That evening, Gobber the Belch gave the Dragon Manual to the group for them to study. Astrid, despite being initially keen to read it, had second thoughts when Hiccups suggested that they "share"- Astrid hastened to say that she had "read it". During the student's next lesson—this time against a Deadly Nadder in a labyrinth—Astrid again comes out on top. Angered with Hiccup getting in her way, she is quick to berate him by saying that they're about to inherit their parents' war and commands him to figure out what side he fights for. That night, Astrid was listening to Gobber's stories about dragons with the others when she noticed Hiccup steal off on his own, without giving notice to the others. Although her curiosity was aroused, she did not pursue the matter.

At the next lesson, the students faced a Hideous Zippleback in paired teams: Astrid with Ruffnut, Hiccup with Fishlegs, and Snotlout with Tuffnut. Each team was equipped with two buckets of water, which they needed to douse the Zippleback's spark-breathing head. After being doused with water by Snotlout and Tuffnut, who mistook the girls for dragons, Astrid and Ruffnut lose their buckets of water due to Snotlout and Tuffnut's jeers, with Tuffnut saying that they thought the girls were a dragon. Snotlout quickly cut him off, saying that "there is nothing wrong with a girl with a dragon-esque figure." Astrid however, remained angry that her water had been knocked from her hands, obliterating her chance of taking down the dragon. While Hiccup lost the last bucket of water due to a poor throw, Astrid was shocked to see Hiccup somehow frightening the Zippleback back into its cage merely by motioning to it. As the lessons progressed, it soon became apparent that Hiccup was becoming better and better, always seeming to have a way with the dragons and exerting control over them. He soon overtook Astrid as the star pupil, which stirred her jealousy and anger even further. After one particular lesson, Astrid busied herself venting her anger in the forest by throwing her axe into trees, when she saw Hiccup sneaking around. She attempted to follow him but lost sight of him through the foliage, only maddening her further.

Wait!

The following night, Astrid heard a crash from Hiccup's stall at the blacksmith shop and found Hiccup "acting weird—well, weirder". She was further riled as she attempted to talk to him on the subject of his strange behavior, but found him being apparently yanked back into the stall and- when she looked round the door- he had disappeared without a trace.

Not long after, Astrid and Hiccup found themselves the only students left in the competition to be the dragon slayer, the two of them having proved the most promising at killing. They were again faced with the Gronckle, during which time Astrid hissed to Hiccup a warning, to "stay out of her way", afraid as she was of him stealing her glory once again. Despite Astrid's best efforts, she found to her amazement that she had lost when Hiccup immobilized the Gronckle in several seconds. Astrid threw a rage and quit upon seeing this and began to throw her axe around, smashing things, distressed at how her best efforts had come to waste simply because of Hiccup. The Viking Elder, Gothi, denied Astrid the right to kill the Monstrous Nightmare and instead gave it to Hiccup. The scene ended with Astrid glaring bitterly at the victor.

Determined not to give up, Astrid managed to follow Hiccup to the cove he had been visiting after training, bringing along her trusty axe. Hiccup was shocked to see her there but Astrid demanded answers on Hiccup's strange actions and sudden talent, both in Dragon Training and in general. Astrid then began interrogating Hiccup on the real reason for his sudden improvements in Dragon Training. She believed that perhaps he was training with someone in the village to become better at killing dragons, stating bitingly that it "better not involve this", and pointing to Hiccup's riding vest. Suddenly, Astrid gasped as she heard a growl and a rustle from the cave where Toothless was hidden: she tried to peer round Hiccup, in order to get a better look at the cave. In an attempt to prevent her from stumbling upon Toothless as she stalks past him, Hiccup lied the admission that he had been "making outfits", and told Astrid that he's "through with the lies". Astrid, despite being furious and hitting him with her axe, was at least stopped in her tracks, and turned to leave.

Astrid hanging from a tree

Astrid Hanging from a branch, after toothless dropped her.

At that moment, thinking that Astrid is a threat to Hiccup, Toothless charged out roaring and Astrid screamed at Hiccup to "get down". She rolled to the ground bringing Hiccup with her, despite his protests that Toothless was a friend. Before the Night Fury could attack, Hiccup grabbed Astrid's axe, casting it away and stopping Toothless in mid-pounce having told him that Astrid was a friend. After a grudging introduction to one another, during which Toothless snarled mistrustfully at her, Astrid realized that the reason Hiccup had beaten her in Dragon Training was that he had befriended a dragon, and ran off to tell the villagers. But in the middle of the forest, before she could make it, she was snatched up and placed screaming on the pinnacle of a tree by Toothless and Hiccup where he asked for a chance to explain.

Astrid snarls that she's "not listening to anything he has to say", but being terrified all the same, awkwardly clambered onto Toothless' back. Hiccup told the Night Fury to land- gently, so as not to scare Astrid further. Toothless promptly performed the polar opposite of the command, shooting into the sky and climbing high then descending at speed, performing a complex flight of terrifying drops, rolls and flip maneuvers until the terrified Astrid apologized. Toothless finally stopped and took her and Hiccup on an extraordinary scenic flight above the clouds and Berk. She gradually became more comfortable around Hiccup and even went as far as to rest her head on his shoulder. Astrid was amazed by the flight and what she saw, and realized just how wrong she was about Toothless- and Hiccup as well. She began to comprehend, in those brief few minutes, how incredible dragons are, and even reached down to pat Toothless' head, in reply to which the Night Fury grinned back at her.

Astrid amazed at the view

As Toothless flew away from Berk, Astrid asked Hiccup what he was going to do "for his final exam" when he would be forced to "kill a dragon". For the latter part of the sentence she tactfully changed her voice to a whisper, so as not to upset Toothless, demonstrating just how much the young Viking had become aware about dragons, and how she had come during the flight to see the Night Fury as a friend. Before Hiccup could reply, Toothless suddenly dived into a mist having heard a strange low warbling noise, and the group soon found themselves amidst a flock of dragons carrying their kills towards the Dragons' Nest. Astrid and Hiccup were shocked to discover the many dragons stealing and raiding from their village were in fact doing so to feed a monstrous dragon called the Red Death, "in order to avoid being eaten themselves", as Astrid put it.

When they returned, Astrid wished to tell the village about what they saw but Hiccup managed to talk her out of it, fearing what the other Vikings would do to Toothless. Impressed by Hiccup's persistence on keeping Toothless a secret and his loyalty to Toothless, she agreed and suddenly punched him on the arm "for kidnapping her" before kissing him on the cheek "for everything else."

Astrid seeing what Hiccup is doing

The next day, Hiccup, having been nominated by Gothi, had to pass his final examination by killing his first dragon: the Monstrous Nightmare. Astrid wished Hiccup good luck and agreed to make sure the Vikings wouldn't find Toothless should something go wrong, but added nervously, "Just . . . promise me it won't go wrong.". She watched as Hiccup faced the Nightmare and threw his weapon, shield, and helmet to the ground, determined to show the Vikings the truth about dragons. Alas, just as Astrid saw Hiccup about to train the dragon, Stoick, infuriated by his son's traitorous behavior, bellowed for the match to stop and struck the handrail of the Dragon Training arena with his hammer.

The noise frightened the Nightmare, resulting in it attacking Hiccup; Astrid broke into the arena and tried to help Hiccup escape but ended up in danger as well, until Stoick jumped into the ring to help them. Astrid managed to scramble out, but Hiccup ended up in the Nightmare's claws before being saved by Toothless. Toothless fought off the Monstrous Nightmare but refused to leave Hiccup, thinking that the other Vikings were threats and almost killing Stoick in the process. The Vikings swarmed Toothless, and Astrid had to stop Hiccup from interfering so he didn't get hurt. Later, she heard that Stoick had disowned Hiccup.

Later Astrid stood near Hiccup on one of Berk's bridges to watch the ships set sail for the Nest, unwitting of the monster that awaits them there. Seeing that Hiccup is feeling lost, she decided- in her own, unsympathetic way- to try and say something that would help him. She began with an apparent insensitivity- saying sardonically that Hiccup had "lost everything- his father, his tribe, his best friend". Hiccup responded with irritation to the unhelpful comment. She asked why Hiccup didn't kill Toothless the first chance he had, saying that she wants to remember what he says. Hiccup finally told her that he didn't because at that critical moment, he saw that Toothless was just as scared as he himself was; for him, it was like looking in a mirror. And then, Astrid asked what he was going to do about it. Her words motivated him, not to do something stupid... but to do something crazy.

Hiccup and Astrid

Astrid willing to go along with Hiccup's plan

Astrid rounded up the other students and Hiccup provided a brief crash course in what he knew about training and riding the various dragons. Astrid prevented Snotlout's attempt to arm himself when training the Monstrous Nightmare that would eventually become Hookfang. Finally, they flew off to rescue their tribe from the Red Death which had broken out of the Nest to attack. Astrid rode her Deadly Nadder- the one who would soon be known as Stormfly- and dropped Hiccup off so as to allow him to free Toothless from his chains. In the meantime, she and Stormfly flew off to help the others in the fight against the Red Death. They soon ran into danger, as the creature used its vacuum breath to suck Astrid and Stormfly in. Toothless fired a plasma blast at the back of its head, allowing Stormfly the time to fly off, but leaving Astrid plummeting from her dragon: fortunately she was saved as Toothless caught her; she grinned up at him from a heart-quaking flight upside-down, and the dragon grinned back. He then deposited her on the ground as he and Hiccup lead the Red Death into the sky where they engaged in a devastating fight against her, eventually sending her plummeting to her doom in a colossal, fiery explosion.

Kiss1

Astrid and Hiccup's first kiss

When she believed that Hiccup had died in the fight, Astrid was brought close to tears. Mercifully, Stoick announced that Hiccup had survived- Astrid was overjoyed on hearing the news. When Hiccup finally awoke back on Berk to see a changed village, dragons and Vikings living together, Astrid met him outside and punched him on the arm again for scaring her- then kissed him gently, solidifying their relationship. Hiccup remarked to her that he "could get used to it". Along with Stormfly, Astrid joined Hiccup, Toothless, and the other Vikings with their dragons as they soared together into the sky, ready for further adventures with their dragons.

Hunting for the Boneknapper[]

This is a complete waste of time. [src]
  — Astrid

After the events of the Dragon War, Astrid was shown to help the adults throughout the village, as she aided the other Riders in putting out a fire that was raging through the home of Gobber. She listened as Gobber argued with Stoick over the cause of the fire: Gobber's underpants, or the Boneknapper. When Gobber prepared to depart with his sheep, Phil, Astrid enthusiastically agreed to go with Gobber in search of the dragon he insisted was real.

Boneknapper Hiccstrid

Astrid rowed a seven-man longboat along with the others, whilst Gobber told them of his appreciation for their help. It wasn't until Ruffnut said, in response to Gobber's claim that the Boneknapper is a silent killer, "So if we don't hear anything... we're dead?", that Astrid - along with all the others - stop rowing and listen to the silence. Astrid was startled when Phil broke the silence with a bleat, causing Gobber to laugh. Gobber then told them of his first encounter with the Boneknapper: a farfetched tale involving a frozen Viking that allegedly punched him in the face - twice.

Due to Gobber's distracting story, Astrid and the others crashed and sank the boat, and were left with no means to get home. At a loose end, the group stood and listened to Gobber's second encounter, this time involving a Hammerhead Whale The third story was ever more ludicrous, with a volcano and a Hammerhead Yak, and another time, involving the Hammerhead Whale, Hammerhead Yak, and Thor. The tales grew so wild that Astrid and the others no longer beileved him, so Gobber decided it was high time to prove it with a trap. Astrid prompted Hiccup to try and reason with him; this proved to no avail.

Chxnl

While they were waiting for the Boneknapper to try and attack a disguised Fishlegs, Astrid complained to Hiccup that they should be trying to get home. Subsequently, she was so distracted that she, along with everyone else besides Fishlegs, failed to notice the Boneknapper's arrival. After taking cover in the trap, she endeavored to convince Gobber to return the bone he had unintentionally stolen, Hiccup having figured out and told the others what the Boneknapper wanted. Ever goal-driven and practical-minded, Astrid was keen to get home and quite wasting time- and despite wincing when Gobber's underwear fell down following him giving up the bone- she merely smiled gladly when it was found that they had a ride back to Berk.

Astrid, along with the other teenagers and Gobber, flew back home riding the Boneknapper, all appearing equally excited at the opportunity to ride this new dragon. However, she and the others were rather shocked when several female Boneknapper began to follow them home, attracted by their ride's mating call.

First Snoggletog with Dragons[]

I've got an idea! Let's come up with a bunch of new holiday traditions! You know, to bury the sadness! [src]
  — Astrid

During the events of Gift of the Night Fury, Astrid and the other inhabitants of Berk were preparing to celebrate their holiday Snoggletog, for the first time with their dragons. Astrid helped to decorate, assisted by Stormfly who used spineshots to secure her decorative shields in place. After Stoick having made a speech, all of Berk's dragons including Stormfly flew off in the midst of their actions for no apparent reason. Astrid gave a confused and then heartbroken cry as Stormfly abandoned her- "Stormfly? Where are you going?" After the queer proceedings, Astrid wondered despairingly where Hiccup was when they needed him.

Astrid and Stormfly

When Hiccup arrived, Astrid and the other Berkians swarmed him with questions about their dragons' sudden departure. Hiccup however, had no answers, much to Astrid's displeasure. Despite Stoick's attempts to cheer the tribe up in the Great Hall, everyone was left sad and disappointed. Astrid admitted to her friends that she had been looking forward to spending the holiday with Stormfly. In an attempt to cheer up the others, Astrid suggested that they come up with some new holiday traditions to "bury the sadness", as she put it.

The next morning, Astrid attempted to spread cheer with her new homemade beverage- Yak-Nog- and Snotlout was the first to try it, saying that he "would love a cup". However, he silently regretted it, as the drink was obviously repellent, and Snotlout was left, unaware to Astrid, looking extremely nauseous behind her back. Fishlegs was at first eager to try some but awkwardly declined after Snotlout shook his head behind Astrid's back in warning. Ruffnut and Tuffnut refused based on the smell alone, so Astrid decided to go and present some to Hiccup.

Astird

Astrid's infamous Yak-nog

She found him in the forge, where he was working on a new prosthetic that would allow Toothless to fly without Hiccup's assistance, as he was bothered by Tuffnut saying that Toothless can't go anywhere without Hiccup's help. Astrid thought it was a great idea, and called Hiccup "amazing" before running off to "spread more holiday cheer". Thankfully for Hiccup, she didn't notice him spit out the mouthful of her Yak-Nog once she had left.

A few days later, Astrid was forced to duck while Meatlug and Hiccup flew over her head. She shouted, "Hiccup? Where are you going?!" to which he replied, while holding onto the Gronckle for dear life, "I HAVE NO IDEA!!"

Astrid made to confront Fishlegs for chaining up Meatlug in the barn to prevent her from leaving. When she and the twins talked to him about it, they stumbled across several dragon eggs covered up in a nearby haystack, causing the teens to realize two things: the first; that Meatlug is in fact a female dragon and not a male as they thought, and the second; that the dragons were going away to lay their eggs and care for the newborn children.

At that point, Astrid had another idea for a Snoggletog tradition: the teens subsequently wrapped Meatlug's eggs with ribbons and secretly placed them in several homes throughout the village for everyone to find as surprise dragon gifts. Astrid and the others were extremely incensed about their idea, until screams begun to emanate from the huts throughout the village. A plume of smoke along with several explosions rang out a little way away, and Astrid had a horrifying revelation: the eggs explode.

Astrid and Hiccup's second kiss

Astrid kissing Hiccup in Gift of the Night Fury

The Gronckle babies were rounded up and the villagers were beginning repairs when they caught sight of a cloud of dragons being led by Hiccup on Hookfang as they descended from the sky, bringing with them the dragons' babies. Astrid and Stormfly were reunited along with the other Vikings and their dragons, and Astrid was overjoyed to meet Stormfly's new babies. She began to play with them and cuddle them, delighted at how everything had turned out. Stoick then called everyone and their Dragons to the Great Hall to celebrate. During the festivities, Astrid noticed Hiccup and consoled him, being fully aware of how hard it must be for him to see everyone else with their dragons whilst Toothless is still away. She told him gently of how he had done a wonderful thing, and kissed him. Feeling sad, Hiccup asked Astrid where Toothless went, and she began to reply that she didn't know, when the sight of Toothless himself sneaking into the Great Hall caught her attention. Smiling wickedly, Astrid teased Hiccup about how he must be feeling "pretty bad right now". As Hiccup began to find her teasing slightly irksome, she pushed him around with a grin, so that he could be reunited with Toothless, who had gone off in search of Hiccup's Helmet. Hiccup hugged Toothless and Astrid wished everyone a happy Snoggletog.

Welcoming the New Recruit[]

Astrid, alongside Hiccup and Fishlegs, showed an unnamed new dragon trainer- presumably a member of Berk- the Book of dragons, and the three of them explained some of the basics of dragon training. Astrid showed introduced the new rider to her Deadly Nadder, Stormfly. After the introduction, she and the others raced out alongside Toothless, to go out flying.

Incorporating Dragons into Berk and War against the Outcasts[]

As Astrid watched Hiccup's failed attempts to get the dragons of Berk under control in "How to Start a Dragon Academy", she decided to go and speak to him personally. That evening, Astrid spoke with Hiccup, dryly remarking about how they had been watching his failures. Hiccup reassured her that he had a "master plan" going, to which Astrid proved skeptical and serious: she told him doubtfully that there were "a bazillion dragons out there" and only one of him- so he had better have a pretty good plan. The next day, Astrid and the rest of the gang arrived at the Arena with their dragons. Astrid expressed delight at Stoick having let them use the Killing Arena for Dragon Training. When Hiccup sheepishly admitted that his father had not given them permission, Astrid was angry and disappointed, saying: "So we're going behind your father's back?" Despite Astrid and the others following Hiccup's attempts to train the dragons, it all seemed to prove to no avail in the end, as Mildew riled up the Berkians and suggested that they re-cage the dragons and stop allowing them into their homes, for the time being. Astrid, along with the other riders, sat together in the Great Hall that evening, eating their evening meal. Astrid stared sadly into her soup and said quietly that she had gotten used to Stormfly's face being the first she saw each morning. The group then travelled with their dragons to the arena, to lock them up for the night: Astrid was brought to tears at the sight of Stormfly, scared and imprisoned. At that moment, Hiccup and Toothless arrived, and the latter proceeded to breathlessly explain that they weren't going to get rid of their dragons. Astrid was at first excited, exclaiming: "You changed your father's mind!" But she quickly became suspicious, querying "Or are we going behind his back again?" Despite learning that the answer was not entirely satisfactory, Astrid agrees to trust Hiccup along with the others, and go along with his plan to prove the dragons' worth. The next morning, she and Stormfly worked together to plow Mildew's field, and Astrid cheerfully called good morning to the horrified old man.

During the events of "Viking for Hire", Astrid teamed up with Fishlegs for Hiccup's quiz on dragons as part of their self-taught Dragon Academy training. She was later teased by Snotlout when he flirtatiously remarked that there was room for two on Hookfang. Unsurprisingly, she shoved him into the water trough as payback. Later, when Astrid, Tuffnut, Ruffnut, Snotlout and Fishlegs went inadvertently for an extremely lengthy flight on their dragons, they returned stiff and uncomfortable- this gave Hiccup the idea of having Gobber construct saddles for the villagers and their dragons, to allow them to ride for longer. Unfortunately, Gobber's first saddle attempts proved somewhat overambitious, too heavy and overly weaponized: Astrid attempted to take off with Stormfly, then made the mistake of blowing her new "saddle horn", causing Stormfly to startle and fire a rapid spineshot.

In the events of "Animal House", it was a very snowy day, and Hiccup and Astrid went 'Dragon-boarding': a new game that involved sitting on their dragons and sliding down a snow-capped mountain. Astrid was her usual competitive self, constantly slowing Hiccup down to bring about her own victory. Their game came to an abrupt end due to an avalanche forming behind them and Toothless' tail fin being frozen shut. The four of them were dragged into a chasm and safely evade the avalanche, but remained trapped. Astrid and Hiccup huddled together for warmth but soon realized that the dragons had protected them from the snow whilst they were unconscious. Toothless and Stormfly blasted fire to open up the chasm and free them, and Astrid separated from Hiccup, embarrassed. Later, they returned back to the village and recounted the incident. After a while, Astrid and the others received news that the livestock had escaped during their route to the Meade Hall. Astrid and Stormfly, along with the rest of the team, warded the animals back to the village.

When Hiccup found a baby Typhoomerang named Torch in "The Terrible Twos", Astrid and the other Riders studied him. She assisted by measuring his wingspan. She also contributed to Torch's species name - Typhoomerang - by noting how the little dragon flew in an arc and returned to the same spot like a "boomerang". After Hiccup "locks up" Toothless in The Cove because he seemed to be causing trouble from jealousy for Torch, Snotlout suggested that he couldn't be the leader of the Dragon Riders any longer. Astrid replied that if that were the case, then she would be next in line, and that he "really wouldn't want that".

Hiccup and Astrid leaning against the post

Astrid, along with the rest of the teens later joined the Dragon United Monitoring Brigade or "DUMB" during the events of "In Dragons We Trust", and she went about knocking on random Vikings' door to state her duty and ask that they report should they experience any troubles with dragons. Her attempts to help were passed off as the antics of an irritating teenager, and she was sent away. Later, all the dragons, including Stormfly, were sent to Dragon Island having been framed by Mildew. Astrid was angry and upset about having Stormfly taken from her for a second time, and worried about how they could get the dragons back.

Shortly after the establishment of D.U.M.B., Hiccup saw Mildew discard the props—the only evidence available—he used to fake dragon attacks to frame them. As they tried to no avail to search for evidence, Astrid told Hiccup resignedly in "Alvin and the Outcasts" that they may never find it. Dusk drew near, and Astrid was walking along one of the cliffs of Berk, when she spotted a ship in the distance. When she alerted the others, they realized that it was not one of Berk's ships, but that insignia was that of the Outcasts'. The Outcasts soon arrived at the docks and seized the teens. After a hard fight for freedom, Astrid was reunited with Stormfly and the pair drove away the invading Outcasts, along with the other Berkians.

Astrid after hearing Hiccup ask her a question

Astrid advised Hiccup in "How to Pick Your Dragon", who was troubled trying to find a dragon for his father, to use the 'honey and the hatchet' trick: to tell Stoick something good, then the bad news. The next day, when Stoick decided to choose and train his own dragon, Astrid proudly showed him Stormfly, saying: "Never underestimate me. Uh, her- um, us." The Chief seemed convinced about the Deadly Nadder, until Stormfly fired a row of spines, having been touched in her weak spot inadvertantly by Stoick.

After the portrait of Hiccup and Stoick is completed in "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man", where Hiccup was portrayed with untruthfully large muscles, Astrid talked to Hiccup, allowing him to take all his emotions out on her. He commented to her as they walked through the village, that a 'Hiccup' usually symbolizes a runt and expressed his displeasure about the fact that his father couldn't seem to accept him. She said manifestly that "he does... he just accepts the painting more". She then reluctantly followed along with the other Riders and their dragons to find the Treasure of Hamish II.

When Toothless started showing signs of sickness in "Dragon Flower", Astrid and Stormfly were out flying with him and Hiccup. Astrid spotted a sick Terrible Terror and remarked that it also seemed to be unwell. She later rushed to inform Hiccup that there seemed to be an emergency—all the dragons on Berk were falling ill. Astrid stayed with Stormfly all the time she was sick, gently looking after her and caring for her. When Stormfly involuntarily fired spines at her mistress as she sneezed, Astrid told her not to worry: she was a soldier, and had "been shot at before". She later correctly accused Mildew of planting the poisonous Blue Oleander on Berk to cause the dragons to fall ill.

I've seen this before

In "Heather Report, Part 1", Fishlegs was measuring flight speeds and remarked that Astrid and Stormfly were getting faster. Astrid refused to explain outright but hinted that she had been experimenting with Stormfly's diet, and practicing lots. They were interrupted by Snotlout who informed them of something he had discovered on the beach. It turned out to be a Viking girl named Heather who had washed up in a boat off of Berk's shores, having survived a pirate attack. Astrid reminded Hiccup of their plan to meet up, but Hiccup payed little heed and the group set off to help Heather sort out her situation and bring her to the village. That same night, while Astrid was feeding Stormfly some chicken to boost up her speed for her showdown with Hiccup, she saw a shadowed figure sneak past her.

The next day, Hiccup forgot completely about his plans with Astrid despite her reminder, and instead went out on a test flight with Heather. Astrid spotted them and was extremely displeased, her having always been one of the most popular teenager girls on Berk. The other riders saw her jealousy and teased her about it. When Hiccup finally arrived back at the academy, Astrid addressed Heather with sarcasm, asking if she slept well that night. Astrid then took Hiccup outside, warning him not to trust Heather: this resulted in an argument and Hiccup saying: "Well, I do." and accusing Astrid of petty jealousy, much to her disgust.

Later that evening, Astrid caught Heather reading through the Dragon Manual and informed Hiccup of it. He didn't see what the big deal was and simply shrugged off Astrid's suspicions. Astrid, however, was still convinced Heather was putting on an act and her suspicions were confirmed when she stumbled upon Heather feeding Stormfly chicken. Heather taunted Astrid as Stormfly began showing affection to the newcomer. Frustrated and annoyed, Astrid wandered off to the woods to practice with her axe and to blow off steam. Soon, she spotted Heather running towards the shore and quietly followed her. She watched Savage's boat dock at the beach and then overheard Heather informing him of what she had learned about training dragons.

Astrid rushed back to town and then barged into Hiccup's house to triumphantly tell him of everything she had seen. Hiccup followed her upstairs to his room only to find that Heather was apparently sound asleep, contrary to Astrid's claims. Sleepily, Heather rolled from her bed, asking: "What's wrong, guys?", leaving Astrid furious at her feigned innocence. Astrid insisted that what she saw was true, but Hiccup angrily refused to change his beliefs about Heather.

The next day, Astrid returned to the stables to look after Stormfly but noticed that she was gone. She rushed into Hiccup's house, telling him shortly and angrily that Heather was gone, along with Stormfly and the Book of Dragons. Hiccup finally acknowledged that she was right. They quickly set off with the rest of the gang to catch up with Heather, spotting her heading to Outcast Island. Heather had boosted up Stormfly's speed by feeding her chicken, and they ended up flying into Outcast Island territory, where the Book was seized by Alvin.

Thankfully, Astrid promptly reunited with Stormfly in "Heather Report, Part 2" following a struggle with Heather. Astrid flew up on Toothless then leapt onto Stormfly's back, pushing Heather off after a brief conflict. When they return to Berk, by the next morning Heather, who was unable to escape in the fight and was imprisoned on Berk, tried to make a run for the boat from her cell. Astrid, however, thwarted her attempt and Stormfly blew the boat to smithereens. She then threw Heather back into the prison cell, and despite Heather's claims that Alvin had her family captive, she refused to trust her.

Astrid dressed up as Heather

When the gang planned to return to Outcast Island to get the book back, Astrid dressed up as Heather in an attempt to trick Alvin. She then set sail to the Island and posed as Heather. They later forced "Heather" to train some dragons for them to prove what she had learnt: her disguise payed off and she successfully trained a Nightmare. She attempted to escape with the Book of Dragons on the Nightmare, but the Outcasts warned her that if she did, her parents would be killed. Astrid then realized that Heather was speaking the truth, and she can't leave, should the Outcasts do away with Heather's parents. She gave in and meets them, whispering her plan to them and telling them that she's a friend of Heather's. The plan almost succeeded, as Astrid caused the Monstrous Nightmare she had previously managed to calm, to shoot fire everywhere. In the chaos, she tried to escape with Heather's parents, but ended up being caught by Alvin, who noticed that the black dye in her head was starting to rub off, and that she was not in fact who she pretended to be.

The Riders soon arrived and Astrid, along with the Nightmare, destroyed the fort and retrieved the Book. Heather also arrived riding Stormfly: the pair saved Astrid who apologized instantly for her skepticism of Heather. Heather replied that it was fine; she wouldn't have believed herself either. Back on Berk, Heather and Astrid hugged each other and smiled. Heather thanked Astrid for being a good friend to her, and apologized for all the trouble she had caused- then Astrid watched and waved goodbye as her newfound friend climbed into the boat with her parents and sailed off, back to her island.

Astrid hiccup thawfest kiss

Their first kiss of the TV series sequel to the film.

Astrid participated in the Thawfest Games during the events of "Thawfest". She was seen practicing hard, prior to the events, alongside Stormfly: the two practiced multiple tricks and flight maneuvers for the recently adjoined Dragon Events, and Astrid practiced some physical activities such as axe throwing and handstands, with Stormfly watching her. The next day, when the contest commenced, Astrid expressed ready excitement to join in, until Snotlout sauntered up with his medals from winning previous years, at which point Astrid gave him a disgusted glare and whispered that she wished "someone would beat Snotlout for once".

In the first event- the Sheep Lugging, where the teens were required to run a short sprint holding a sheep on their shoulders- Astrid had a strong start but fell behind as Snotlout pushed his way forwards. The second event to proceed was the Log Roll: a contest of balance to see which of the fifteen-year-olds would be able to stay upright on a rolling log the longest, without falling off. Astrid tried her best, but was knocked from her position by Fishlegs as he flailed and clung to her in his desperation, and the two were dragged down together. The final event of the physical contests was the axe-throwing- and event Astrid should surely have won based on her skill, but alas was knocked off course by Fishlegs, who threw his axe in the same direction at Astrid's by mistake. Despite her constant failures to gain points, Astrid didn't take losing to heart, only expressing disapproval of Hiccup's sudden rivalry with Snotlout. As she saw the pair arguing, she shook her head and walked off.

The next day, the newly added Dragon Events took place for the second phase of the teenager's Thawfest games. The first of these events was the Hurdles. As Snotlout boasted about how simple it would be to go over them, Astrid interjected smirking that you "don't go over them; you go under them". In the challenge, all the dragons and riders found it a difficult task to complete, bar Toothless, him being the smallest and most agile. However, Astrid and Stormfly seemed fairly pleased with their attempt, having made it nearly all the way through with ease, only knocking into one hurdle with Stormfly's spine crown. In the proceeding Freestyle event, Astrid and Stormfly excelled, Astrid performing the Nadder Wingwalk which she had been practicing. This trick of her own invention required her to perform a series of cartwheels and acrobatic maneuvers on dragonback as Stormfly glided gently around the arena. The other Riders note, as Gobber did, that it is very impressive. Unfortunately, she was still upstaged by Hiccup, who performed a trick that the judges rated one point higher: she graciously said nothing of it, but did comment in disgust that Hiccup was becoming as lousy a winner as Snotlout. When a tie was announced between Hiccup and Snotlout, the tiebreaker to commence the following morning, Astrid told Hiccup that what she had always liked about him was how gracious a loser he was. She finished by saying in disappointment: "Who knew you'd be such a lousy winner?"

The next day, Astrid watched the tiebreaker with interest along with the other Berkians, and urged on her two friends as they competed. When Hiccup pulled back to allow Snotlout the victory, Astrid smiled, and as he came to land in second place, she kissed him proudly.

Astrid encouraged Stormfly to rest on the new perches Hiccup created for dragons during the episode "When Lightning Strikes". She also rescued a dragon when lightning nearly struck it. She later helped to construct the cape of a statue for Thor, alongside Stormfly who aided with her spines to make holes for the screws. Later, as Mildew accused Toothless of attracting the lightning, Astrid stood by Hiccup and Toothless in their defense, angrily demanding to Mildew that his theory was impossible.

Astrid, during the events of "What Flies Beneath", was very vocal in her defense of Hiccup when Snotlout made various insensitive comments about Hiccup's role in depriving Toothless of the ability to fly solo, and almost going over to beat him up before Hiccup stopped her.

Astrid taught Stormfly several hand signals in "Twinsanity", such as an open palm for a spine-shot. Later, she expressed her displeasure about the fact that Dagur had become Chief and was coming over to Berk, commenting that "that guy should be locked in a cage". She later tried to find the twins to control Barf and Belch, as Dagur wanted to seek out and kill the dragon. Along with the others, she faked a dragon attack and commanded Stormfly to shoot spines with her new hand signals, without actually injuring anyone.

He's just trying to protect you

When Hiccup went away to find Snotlout in "Defiant One", Astrid explained to Stoick where Hiccup was, taking command of the Riders in a search party for the time being.

Astrid, along with the other Riders, went to Breakneck Bog to retrieve a package that had been stolen by the Smothering Smokebreaths, and was something that Hiccup's mother, Valka, had wanted him to have. Astrid convinced the other Riders to stay when they considered abandoning the mission, imploring them to help- "after all; what if it was your mother?"

Astrid and the rest of the teens faced off several mother Changewings and helped return their eggs in "Gem of a Different Color".

Astrid learned to summon Deadly Nadders by calling them in "We Are Family, Part 1". She used a howl-like roar to summon Stormfly alongside a troupe of other Nadders, who she also later trained to fly in perfect formation. When Hiccup was troubled about the fact that Toothless was the only Night Fury, Astrid assured him that aside from having Hiccup, Toothless would be fine- he seemed perfectly happy just with the other dragons and the Berkians. She also reported that Stoick and Gobber were looking for Hiccup and wanted to see him in the Great Hall. Later, she realized that Hiccup had wanted to head to the Isle of Night without them and was upset and angry that he hadn't chosen to confide in the rest of them.

In "We Are Family, Part 2", all the riders, including Stoick, headed to the Isle of Night and Astrid reminded them that it should be crawling with Night Furies and gave them tactical advice, telling them to fly low until they get a sense of where Hiccup might be.

In "Dragon Down", Astrid and Stormfly proudly showed off their new trick together, before helping the others to find Hookfang, who was separated from Snotlout due to a storm. When Alvin attempted to capture Hookfang, Astrid and Stormfly performed their new trick: a waterspout- to help fight off the attackers.

"Dangers of the Deep"- in this comic, Astrid and Stormfly were on patrol together, demonstrating their responsibility as citizens of Berk, when they spotted a fleet of Outcast ships heading towards the island. They were quick to deal with the situation and alert Stoick.

In "The Ice Castle", which is the third volume from the Riders of Berk Comics, the Northlander Tribe Chief Arngrim Dammen payed Berk a visit. His initial intentions were to sell the Hooligans some of his furs to keep warm for the winter. However, he quickly took an interest in the dragons, especially Stormfly, which made Astrid very suspicious of the trader.

Save

Arngrim ended up kidnapping Stormfly, sneaking her on board his ship and then making his escape towards the Ice Needles- a large glacier fortress. Astrid was fueled with anger when she discovered that her dragon had been taken away and decides to track Arngrim down along with Hiccup and the other Dragon Riders. They succeeded in their mission and Astrid reunited with Stormfly.

In The Stowaway, the fourth volume of the Riders of Berk Comics, a young man named Hroar stowed away on a Hooligan passage ship to make his way to Berk so he could "check out the dragons". Hroar appeared to be handsome, brave, intelligent and considerably much brawnier than Hiccup. He quickly won everyone over, including Stoick the Vast, and even managed to impress Astrid much to Hiccup's dismay.

While Astrid became better acquainted with Hroar, even letting him ride on Stormfly with her, Hiccup grew increasingly suspicious of the newcomer. Once Hroar had tamed his own dragon, Torch, he invited Astrid along with him for a flight. Oblivious to Hroar's true nature, Astrid joined him without question and ended up getting led into a trap. Luckily, Hiccup arrived in time to expose Hroar and prevent him from fulfilling his destructive intentions.

Astrid ended up dropping Hroar into a fish barrel as payback for his deception.

In "The Legend of Ragnarok" Astrid was present, and helped to protect Berk from the new dragon attacking the village.

In "Queen of the Hill" Astrid and Stormfly were stranded on an unknown island full of wild Smothering Smokebreaths.

During the events of "Underworld", Astrid and the others flew into a cave- against Stoick's wishes- and uncovered a plot from a Viking named Fiske who wished to ruin Berk down to an old grudge. Astrid and Stormfly managed to alert Stoick to the plot by escaping from Fiske and flying to warn him: the pair then lead an angry Submaripper towards Fiske to put an end to his scheme.

Outcast War continues and the Berserker War[]

Astrid encouraged Hiccup to defy his father's ban on flying in "Live and Let Fly" and joined Hiccup's 'Flight club' eagerly. The Dragons Riders practiced flying under the cover of the dark at night, honing their skills and sharpening their knowledge on dragons. They later defended Berk against Alvin and his Outcast's attack.

Hate having to wake her

During the events of "The Iron Gronckle", Astrid, along with the rest of the gang, headed off to search for an Outcast ship. After a failed attempt which the team attributed to Fishlegs and Meatlug's slow speed, they abandoned the pair at Snotlout's cajoling, although Astrid protested that every one of the Dragon Riders were valuable assets to the team. Later, Astrid pointed out meaningfully that they could have used some of the duo's skills in finding the ship.

Astrid, having been selected by Hiccup, put together a survival test that involved the other Dragon Trainers surviving on Dragon Island without their dragons in "The Night and the Fury". The test involved making it from one point of Dragon Island without their dragons and any camping at night. After splitting up, she met a wild Nadder and successfully evaded an attack. Having journeyed for a while, she spotted the rest of the team, alongside Dagur- much to her horror. Playing along with the gang and fooling Dagur into thinking that they were hunting dragons, she soon escaped with Stormfly, who broke out of Dagur's traps with the other dragons to find her.

Scrubdown

Astrid and Snotlout picked up water to help Berk when the well went dry in "Tunnel Vision". Despite the latter's insistent pleas to sell the water for a fortune, she handed out water for free. Later, Astrid defended Berk when Whispering Deaths and the Screaming Death attacked. She and the others were able to fight them off, Astrid controlling Stormfly to fire several spineshots in a grueling aerial battle.

In "Race to Fireworm Island", Astrid rounded up some Fireworms and later journeyed to Fireworm Island with the others to find a cure for Hookfang's dying flames. She was uncharacteristically kind and supportive to Snotlout, perceiving that he was truly upset.

In the events of "Fright of Passage", Astrid redeemed her family's honor when Aurvandil's Fire and the Flightmare returned ten years after it had shamed her uncle Fearless Finn Hofferson by freezing him in fear. Astrid and Hiccup then learned that the Flightmare paralyzed its victims by spraying a mist at them: a revelation to Astrid. She, Hiccup, Fishlegs and their dragons then figured that the Flightmare was following glowing algae in the river. The three of them and their dragons then cut a new path away from the village. They also had their dragons eat the algae in order to blind the Flightmare and lead it away from Berk. Astrid, despite the difficult situation, was amazed at the bioluminescence that the algae brought out in Stormfly's scales.

Astrid upon hearing Hiccup clear her family's name

When a practice drill turned into a Terrible Terror training contest in "Worst in Show", Astrid trained a Terror whom she named Sneaky; trained to be stealthy and travel without being spotted. Competitive by nature, she fought for Sneaky's title as the best-trained dragon when the team fell into a chaotic argument about which trainer is the best. When Meatlug ended up being kidnapped by the outcasts, each of the members brought their Terrors along. Astrid instructed Sneaky to land on Alvin's head, causing Savage to strike out at the little dragon, inadvertently hitting his Chief on the head.

With Fishlegs' new initiative to track dragon migration in "Appetite for Destruction", Astrid and Hiccup were assigned to tag dragons with colors. Astrid playfully mocked Hiccup and asked him to join in the fun. Later, she questioned the effectiveness of 'Terror Mail'. When the Screaming Death appeared, she and Fishlegs rounded up several wild dragons to defeat it.

During the events of "Zippleback Down", Astrid was taught how to deactivate dragon traps and successfully did so. Along with the other riders, she heads to deactivate dragon traps left behind from the war. Back at the village, she is surprised to see that Tuffnut had trained Torch.

Astrid, along with Snotlout and Hiccup, was tasked on a search mission to find Bucket and Mulch after they had been reported missing during a fishing trip in "A View to a Skrill, Part 1". After finding them, and a Skrill trapped in an iceberg, they head back to Berk. Astrid later pointed out that the Skrill is the symbol of the Berserker Tribe, which hinted at why they wanted it. After the Skrill escaped, they chased after it, only to find that it was captured by the Berserkers.

During the events of "The Flight Stuff", Astrid attempted to convince Snotlout that he wasn't dying despite the fact that he has seen the 'Five Signs of Valhalla'. Later that night, Astrid distracted a Berserker ship so that Hiccup and Snotlout could get a chance to sneak up and see their new weapon.

In the episode "Free Scauldy", Astrid was paired up with Snotlout for a scouting mission. Much to her disgust, Snotlout repeatedly flirted with her. Mockingly, she called him sweet names and returns his behavior. When they met the rest of the gang up, only to find them being attacked by Changewings and a beached Scauldron, they flew in to help. Astrid later assisted them in helping the injured Scauldron to swim away. She later crowed over her victory with Snotlout, as Snotlout now found her name-calling and constant flirting embarrassing, and was getting a taste of his own medicine.

When Speed Stingers attacked Berk in "Frozen", she was one of the few villagers who escape unscathed and took refuge with the rest in the Cove. When Hiccup returned from his mission, she hugged him and asked how it went. Later, she assisted the Riders in their attempt to kidnap the Lead Stinger. Unfortunately, Stormfly fell to the ground and was surrounded by the Stingers, and Astrid huddled on her back, both scared and trying to protect the other. Fortunately, the other riders flew in and captured the Lead Stinger in order to divert the rest, and Astrid had Stormfly carry the dragon in a cage across the ocean.

Astrid and Snotlout raced to the Great Hall in "A Tale of Two Dragons", and ended up destroying it. As a punishment, they were sentenced to community service in Mildew's field. When Hookfang and Stormfly began to fighting whilst working, the duo started blaming each other's dragons for being 'out of control'. Astrid demanded consequentially to work on a different part of the field, with a different Viking, to which Hiccup slyly agreed. To Astrid's dismay and anger, she arrived at the new field only to find Snotlout there too, having asked to switch partners as well. To settle the dispute, Hiccup decided to swap their dragons for the day, so that the pair could both discover that their dragons were not out of control, and settle their differences.

Astrid was remarkably impressed with Hookfang's skills as they flew together, and his ability to ignite himself at will, and the pair went on a beautiful flight over the ocean and through the clouds. Smiling, Astrid admitted to Hookfang that he was "pretty cool". The next morning, she returned secretly to the Academy to feed him. There, she ran into Snotlout, who instantly aroused her suspicions as he was carrying a leg of chicken around. The two questioned each other's actions, and Astrid explained with embarrassment that she was just "getting Hookfang some breakfast". To this, Snotlout replied with delight that Hookfang "loves breakfast". He then explained to Astrid that he was doing the same for Stormfly. Smiling, the two made their way in and noticed that the dragons had broken out of the pens. Soon, they found the dragons on Mildew's cabbage field, fighting. In order to stop them from fighting, they sat on each other's dragons, to prevent their own from attacking the other in order to protect their Rider. Fishlegs then come along, to reveal that there was Dragon Root under the soil. Using the skills Astrid learned about Hookfang, she and Snotlout successfully dislodged the Root. Hiccup told Snotlout and Astrid that they could cooperate as a team and mend their fences only by themselves and not depending on someone to control their behavior and attitudes.

You're okay 2

Astrid and the rest of the team headed to Healer's Island to collect ingredients when the village comes down with Eel Pox in "The Eel Effect". After Hiccup and Toothless left for Eel Island to collect the last ingredient—eels, she headed back to Berk with the others, but soon contracted Eel Pox along with the rest of the Berkians. Coughing and weak, she waited on a cool rooftop for Hiccup to return- on his arrival, he coaxed her back inside and distributed the antidote, to Astrid's relief. She soon made a full recovery.

After Trader Johann came to Berk in "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", Astrid noted the loss of several metal objects from her household. The other Riders reported the same. When they found out that Smothering Smokebreaths intentionally planted by the Beserkers via Trader Johann were the cause of it, she helped gather the remaining metal and dropped the pieces on Dagur's incoming ship to lure the Smokebreaths there.

Hiccup brought three adolescent Thunderdrums home in "Bing! Bam! Boom!" and Astrid attempted to train them, but failed, much to her displeasure. Later, whilst the young dragons were rampaging Berk, Astrid and Stormfly blocked off one of their exits.

Astrid hugging Stormfly COPI

During a drill in "Cast Out, Part 1", Astrid was knocked off of Stormfly due to Snotlout's recklessness and rebellion against Hiccup's orders. Astrid soon regained consciousness and rushed to apprehend Snotlout for his actions. She was triumphant on learning that Hiccup had suspended Snotlout from the team. That night, the team returned to see their dragons fighting against one another in the Academy. Astrid, the twins and Fishlegs rushed in, and noticed a lump of Dragon Root, positioned in the midst of the chaos. Astrid dodged the attacks from the feraled dragons as Meatlug grabbed the Root, being immune to its affect. The Berserkers, who left the Root there, then revealed themselves and forced Hiccup to surrender but ended up catching Stoick, who rushed to help. Astrid was horrified and tried to help her Chief, but to no avail, and was left angry and hopeless as the Beserkers left the island.

In "Cast Out, Part 2", Astrid helped Hiccup to control the crowd of distressed villagers, perceiving that they were lost without their chief. After Hiccup surrendered himself to the enemy, Astrid devised a plan with the remaining Riders, to lure the Screaming Death with the Root to Outcast Island. They broke Stoick and Hiccup out and returned back to Berk.

Creating the Dragon Races[]

In a flashback during which most of Dawn of the Dragon Racers takes place, Astrid and the other Dragon riders were catching sheep who were running around Berk, which turns into a competition to collect as many sheep as possible. When Hiccup was made acting chief by Stoick in his absence, Astrid persuaded Hiccup to continue the Dragon Race as it was a great way to "blow off steam". During one race, when Astrid and Snotlout were both heading for the black sheep, due to neither of them backing off, they violently collided, resulting in Astrid breaking her left arm and rendering her unable to participate.

That's um embarrassing

Astrid during Dawn of the Dragon Racers

When Stoick returned and found out that Hiccup has replaced the Regatta with Dragon Racing (for the good of the people), Stoick proceeded with the Dragon Race and appointed Astrid as the referee for the first annual Berk Dragon Race, as she was still unable to participate. After Team Snotnuts' (Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut) "black" sheep was revealed to be merely a sheep coated in black paint and Team Hicclegs (Hiccup and Fishlegs) brought home the real black sheep, Astrid announced a reversal in which Team Hicclegs was declared the winner.

Founding the Edge and Dagur's Return[]

Astrid: "You were right Hiccup. There's so much more out here and its beautiful."
Hiccup: "And this is only the beginning Astrid. Who knows what we'll find out here?"[src]

Three years after the First Berserker War, Astrid and Stormfly were accepted into the Berk Guard in "Dragon Eye of the Beholder, Part 1". As she flew above Berk on Stormfly, she explained this to an oblivious Hiccup, who still clung to their antics when they were younger, and had had no responsibility, flying about the Archipelago discovering new dragons. Astrid told simply that it was over. All the Dragon Riders had their own lives to get on with back on Berk, and couldn't spend days chasing dragon species any more: after all, they had "checked every island, explored every sea stack". When Hiccup insisted that there must be something beyond the known Archipelago, Astrid shook her head doubtfully and flew home. However, when she and the others caught wind of Dagur's escape from prison, she joined up with the other riders "just like old times" to track down Dagur the Deranged in the Ship Graveyard. There, she and the others waited for Dagur while Hiccup and Toothless explored The Reaper. Astrid and the other riders were then ambushed and captured by Dagur and his men- much to their protest- and were placed in one of The Reaper's cages.

Get out of here

Promptly after the events of the first episode, in "Dragon Eye of the Beholder, Part 2", Astrid and the others were then rescued from the sinking Reaper. As the boat began to sink and Hiccup was tasked with choosing between saving his friends and capturing Dagur, Astrid cried along with the others for help. As the boat pitched upside down, the cage door slid open, and she and the others slid out with it. Fortunately, Snotlout managed to get a hold on the boat and the others hung onto him desperately but Astrid's grip failed her, and she plummeted into the ocean, where she was surrounded by giant eels. Disoriented and panicked but still aware of her surroundings, Astrid made an attempt at fighting the eels with her axe, through what little she could see in the water, before Hiccup and Toothless dived in to rescue her. Back on Berk, Astrid then went with Gothi and the other riders to Glacier Island. There, they searched for a Snow Wraith in order to obtain a tooth to unlock the Dragon Eye. They were successful.

Astrid and the other riders marveled at the symbols projected from the Dragon Eye in "Imperfect Harmony", discovering new dragons and places before their very eyes. Later, she traveled with the other riders and their dragons to search for Dagur beyond the known Archipelago's borders. She expressed excitement, along with the others, joining in their chants of "the Great Beyond!"; laughing and shouting as they headed out to sea. However, after nearly a whole day of flying had passed uneventfully, she and the Riders showed sufficiently quelled enthusiasm, still half-heartedly echoing the cries of "the great beyond". She joined the others in complaining that they still had yet to come across a suitable island to make camp, when the group spotted a seemingly ideal location, fruitful with lush vegetation and scenic beaches. Ecstatic, Astrid cried: "Hiccup, we found it!" On the island, she made camp with the others, and enjoyed the lovely scenery. Late that night, she talked to Hiccup as the pair watched the moon, telling him wondrously that there's "so much more out there" that the Berkians don't know about, and it's "beautiful". The next morning, she was shaken awake by Hiccup and the others, who had found that there dragons were gone. Astrid called worriedly for Stormfly, then angrily asked Ruff and Tuff how many times they were going to check behind the same rock for Barf and Belch, as their dragon was obviously incapable of hiding behind it. When Astrid found that Stormfly had been encased in Death Song amber along with all the other dragons, and were going to be food for the cannibalistic Death Song dragon, she attempted to devise a plan. Unfortunately, the group's plan resulted with them all being shot at by the Death Song, one by one, and encased with amber. Astrid tried to help the others, but to no avail as they were encased, until only Hiccup was left. She succeeded in jumping in front of him, getting caught in the amber herself but allowing Hiccup to escape. She and the others fortunately escaped with Hiccup aided by a juvenile Thunderdrum, and the group agreed with their dragons that they needed a base island.

Astrid giving Hiccup two thumbs up

In "When Darkness Falls", Astrid and the others continued to search for an island to act as their outpost. As Snotlout and Hiccup were attacked by wild boars, Astrid and Stormfly blasted the boars with magnesium flames, saving her two friends. After finding an island, she offered up her exceedingly militarized design for their outpost, and suggested that they complete it with defense mechanisms and fully weaponize the base. The other Riders were less enthusiastic about her plans, and each offered up their own, resulting in the group bickering. When they reached a compromise, Astrid and the others began to explore the island and discovered a flock of Night Terrors. Astrid then defended the flock from Changewings with Stormfly. She helped reunite the alpha night terror, Smidvarg, with his flock and allowed his flock to share their outpost.

Astrid and the other riders then returned to Berk to remove a Scauldron from the fishing lanes during the events of "Big Man on Berk". At first, they failed but were able to relocate it after Fishlegs/Bonecrusher failed to tame the Scauldron.

During the events of "Gone Gustav Gone", she was the first to report to Hiccup that Gustav Larson was on the Edge. She was later tasked to take care of him, much to her displeasure. She brought Gustav to help her train, but as he was distracted by her beauty, Gustav failed to help her with her training.

When Fireworms flock to their island and the twins were crowned rulers of Dragon's Edge in "Reign of Fireworms", Astrid was assigned to be the Royal Brush Clearer and she reluctantly accepts it. She was the first to be sent to 'the dungeon' for breaking the rules. When the rest of the team was captured, Hiccup suggests breaking out. The twins soon come over, for the Fireworms were burning the island and requested for their help on the condition that everyone was 'ruler'. Astrid later helps clear the island of foliage and leads the Fireworms away.

Astrid, much like the other Riders, had to take shifts searching for the rogue Rumblehorn in "Crushing It". When Hiccup and Stoick left to search for it, she was in charge of repairing the Edge from the destruction. After realizing that a tsunami wave was heading to the Edge, she and Stormfly reinforced a wall to block the wave and used the latter's spine-shots to seal cracks in the wall.

Astrid remarks to Hiccup that the twins' watchtower was going to be a disappointment in "Quake, Rattle, and Roll". She later helps Fishlegs in Dark Deep to chase the Catastrophic Quaken away.

Hiccup having just handed Astrid something

Astrid and the other riders were getting supplies in "Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 1", then went to a ship to investigate an attack by a rogue rider and their dragon. There, Astrid found a spike as sharp as Stormfly's. At the great hall, Astrid then had Stormfly light up the Dragon Eye to find information on the Sharp-class dragon. Promptly after the previous events, Astrid and the other riders went to an island with sea slugs. However, Astrid and Stormfly were then trapped in a cave by rogue rider's dragon, who turned out to be Heather.

Astrid after saying but I still have you

During the events of "Have Dragon Will Travel, Part 2", Astrid and Heather have some 'girl time', where they hung out and she found out about Heather's plan to defeat Dagur's fleet. She was reluctant to help, but then changed her mind and convinced the other riders to help. Astrid then assisted Heather in attacking Dagur and his fleet using her 'element of surprise' technique that she shared with Heather. However, they ended their attack when Dagur's reinforcements arrived and Heather realized that Dagur was her brother. Back at the Edge, Heather decides to leave to think, much to Astrid's despair. She bids her goodbye and Hiccup apologized to Astrid, saying that they had become really close. Astrid smiles back and remarks that she still has him.

Astrid then looked, along with the other riders how Hiccup tests his flight suit in "The Next Big Sting" and stops him after he fails multiple times. She then helps training a Speed Stinger and fight against the other flightless dragons.

Snotlout was threatened with the loss of his dragon in "Total Nightmare" and Astrid and the gang helped to round up several dragons to convince him to stay. When he later faces off with the Titan Wing Nightmare, she exhibits concern for him and reminds him to be careful.

War with the Dragon Hunters[]

Astrid: "You don't understand, they were all in cages... and they have Stormfly!"
Hiccup: "Whoa whoah whoah whoah, wait slow down, ...cages? What are you talking about? What happened out there?"
Astrid: "Dragon Hunters."
Hiccup: "Dragon Hunters?"
Astrid: "A whole fleet of them."[src]

After Dagur attacks Berk and destroys her parents' house in "Team Astrid", Astrid decides to stay on Berk and prepare new auxiliary riders. As a strict and somewhat overbearing teacher, she constantly scrutinizes the team and picks up on their mistakes, which is first thought to simply be part of her somewhat domineering teaching style. However, Hiccup eventually realizes that something is wrong: the Riders discuss, and whilst they at first think it may simply be Astrid "being Astrid", Hiccup draws attention to the fact that Astrid may acting so harshly as an excuse to stay on Berk, near to her parents. Astrid is reluctant to agree but knows deep down that Hiccup is right. She admits to the Riders that she's just terrified of the Berserkers attacking Berk again and her not being there, as her parents were could have been killed in the last attack, had they been inside their hut. The other Riders reassure her that they can do more out on the Edge to prevent the attacks than they can on Berk. After Astrid realizes that the Edge needs her and accepts that her parents will be okay, she leaves the auxiliary riders under the command of Gustav, telling him that she considers him and Fanghook capable of such a responsibility after their training.

Night of the Hunters part I27

Astrid goes for a joyful morning flight with Stormfly during the events of "Night of the Hunters, Part 1". However, the air notice some strange noises coming from a beach nearby. On flying over to investigate, they come across a whole fleet of Dragon Hunter ships, transporting crates of supplies onto their boats and caged dragons. Astrid is horrified at the treatment she sees of a wild Monstrous Nightmare, and looks on from behind a rock. The Hunters spot her and Stormfly, and whilst the pair try to fly away to tell the other Riders of what they have seen, they are shot down by a dragon root arrow. As they crash towards the ocean, Stormfly is caught by a grappling gun and pulled in towards the boat, whilst Astrid- weakened and tired- plummets into the ocean, managing to cling to a piece of driftwood. She is then left stranded in the middle of the sea, as the Hunter ships sail away. Meanwhile, back on the Edge, Toothless and Hiccup begin to worry, Astrid having been gone for a whole day. Fishlegs tries to reassure him, but is clearly worried as well. Eventually, Hiccup decides that they must go and look for her, following where she and Stormfly went. When Hiccup and Toothless find Astrid, a storm is brewing and the rain is heavy. The gang split up and Hiccup saves the drowning Astrid who has fallen off her raft with no energy left, and sunk, freezing cold, into the ocean. Hiccup and Toothless save her and the gang return to the Edge, where Astrid tells the others of what occurred. When they manage to track down the boats, they attempt to sneak on board; unfortunately, this proves a mistaken course of action, as all but Snotlout and Hiccup are captured alongside their dragons. There, Astrid discovers that Heather is working with the Dragon Hunters, and is furious at her friend's apparent betrayal.

In "Night of the Hunters, Part 2", Astrid is imprisoned in a cage along with her fellow Riders, but is shortly taken to Ryker in order that he might probe information out of her on the location of the Dragon Eye. Then she tried to escape along with the riders but failed after Heather defeated her. After that, she was put to work with Tuffnut. When Hiccup and Snotlout came in for the rescue, she 'fought' Heather again and 'won'. In actual fact, Heather was revealing that she was working undercover with the Hunters to find out who the Head of the Hunters was. She, along with the rest of the riders escaped and went back to the Edge.

She tried along with the other riders to convince Tuffnut that he was not turning into a Lycanwing in "Bad Moon Rising".

She was then ordered by her parents to accompany Snotlout and Hiccup to the Island of Friga to attend a wedding between the Jorgensons and Hoffersons in "Snotlout Gets the Axe". However, en route to the wedding, Snotlout dropped the Ceremonial Axe on Iron Isle. There, they found it on the back of the Armorwing, Bandit. They tried to pry it off to no avail. She then went along with his plan to use the Smothering Smokebreaths. It succeeded, but they needed to defend Bandit from the Smokebreaths. After giving Bandit some metal, Astrid and the others got to the island. However, the wedding was called off.

When Toothless was on Berk and Hiccup was captured by the Hunters in "The Zippleback Experience", she pointed out that something was not right. Upon Barf and Belch's distress call, she and the other riders headed there.

Snow Way Out17

During the events of "Snow Way Out", Astrid learned from Heather that Ryker and his hunters were heading to Glacier Island to capture the Snow Wraiths for their teeth. She told Hiccup and the riders that the information was from Trader Johann. However, in truth, she and Heather were working together without Hiccup's knowledge to bring the hunters down from the inside. Astrid then learned from Heather that Snow Wraiths would burrow into a cave for the hibernation period. She then saved Hiccup when one of Ryker's men tried to shoot him. During their pursuit of Heather and Ryker, Astrid revealed that Heather was working with them as a spy. At the Edge, she told Hiccup that Viggo Grimborn, not Ryker, was the leader of the dragon hunters.

Astrid was then left in command of the Edge with only the twins when Hiccup, Snotlout, and Fishlegs went to rescue Trader Johann near Forest Island in "Edge of Disaster, Part 1". During this time, Astrid became frustrated with the twins due to their lack of following her orders. Ruffnut, filled with anger, snaps at Astrid for not respecting her and her brother.

In

However, when the Hunters and Berserkers took Ruffnut hostage and attacked the Edge, she and Tuffnut Thorston defended the edge using his ideas. Her initial idea was to take them down, with carefully devised military tactics. After they fail, Tuffnut proposes his idea to 'Loki' the Hunters. Though initially skeptical, she gave him a chance after realizing that saving Ruff meant more to him than anything. Together, they were able to hold off the Hunters until Hiccup, the other riders, and Scardian's pack arrived to help. She made up with Ruffnut and remarks to Hiccup that working with Tuffnut to hold the Hunters off was true teamwork.

When Fishlegs discovered a Seashocker in the Edge's lagoon during the events of "Shock and Awe", Astrid and the others then assisted Fishlegs in defending it from a pod of Scauldrons. Later that night for Loki Day, she and Stormfly moved the twin's huts to a sea stack.

In "A Time to Skrill", Astrid, Hiccup and the other riders investigated Outcast Island when they realized that it had been attacked by the Frozen Skrill. They quickly headed back to Berk, only to see that the Skrill had attacked the village. She, along with the rest, had to cover the downed Auxillary Riders. They attempted to lead it away and seal it into a glacier but the Skrill saw through the trap. Hiccup lured it away alone, as it appeared that the Skrill only wanted to attack him and led it to Dagur and the Hunters, hoping for them to catch it, where he can seize it away promptly after. He returns to the Edge, disheartened, but Astrid comforts him, saying that while he isn't perfect, it did not matter. What mattered was that he cared for the dragon and the team's safety and that they were going to solve it as a team. They were able to get it from the Hunters, but Hiccup decided to let it go.

Maces and Talons part Ione

Astrid and the other riders freed dragons from Ryker's and Dagur's fleet in "Maces and Talons, Part 1". During this time, she became concerned that the Hunters would discover Heather as a spy. Astrid and Hiccup then met up with Heather, who told them about Viggo's plan to capture a Flightmare. However, Astrid and the other riders lost the Flightmare to Viggo's hunters and Heather was captured. Astrid then became worried about Heather. She then helped Hiccup search Viggo's ship for any clues.

After reaching the Hunters' island and finding her in "Maces and Talons, Part 2", they were able to scare off the Flightmare. However, Astrid then lost track of Heather but reassured Hiccup that the Dragon Eye is useless to Viggo without a Snow Wraith tooth.

Dragon Hunter War Continues[]

Hiccup: "This might be just the beginning."
Astrid: "Of what?"
Hiccup: "Something Viggo said about knowing where the "supply" was. You don't think he could have unlocked the Dragon Eye, do you?"
Astrid: "How? He doesn't have a Snow Wraith key."
Hiccup: "But he found the Buffalord on his own. And we need to find out how."[src]

Months after the Viggo incident, Astrid reluctantly allowed Hiccup to conduct a patrol with only Toothless in "Enemy of My Enemy".

In "Crash Course", Astrid assisted Hookfang and Snotlout in helping the Fireworm Queen rid her nest of the Cavern Crasher.

After exploring with Hiccup in "Follow the Leader", Astrid berated Snotlout and the twins for wasting their supply of monstrous nightmare gel.

Buffalord Soldier 5

During a patrol of the Alpha Quadrant in the episode "Buffalord Soldier", Astrid and Stormfly come across a lone boat. The pair entered cautiously, Astrid remarking that they should "check it out". However, as they descend to the hold, Astrid is horrified to find a room filled with bodies, their skin pale green. As she looks on in horror, one of the men rears up, still half alive, and as Astrid backs out aghast, she is scratched by the dying man's desperate fingers. Back on the Edge, she tells the Riders of what she found, and brushes their concern away. She is, however, secretly worried about what happened to her, and her fears are confirmed the following morning, when she awakes exceedingly weakened, with a persistent cough and an inability to stand- which Fishlegs identifies as all the symptoms of the Scourge of Odin- an illness thought to have been wiped out. As Astrid's condition worsens over the course of a day, the riders decide that the best course of action is to take Astrid to find the Buffalord dragon, whose saliva is a powerful medicine in curing the scourge. As the Riders struggle to produce the antidote from the Buffalord whilst worrying about Astrid's condition and trying to look after her, Hiccup tells the semi-conscious Astrid that he couldn't imagine a world without her in it. Fortunately, Astrid receives the antidote after much struggle on the part of the other riders, and makes a rapid recovery. She greets the other riders, gratefully thanking them, then hugs Stormfly. Later, she and the riders fly over to the ship on the way back to the Edge and destroy it with flaming arrows, providing a proper Viking funeral for the men who died there. Astrid herself says the funeral rites. As they turn to go, Astrid remarks to Hiccup that she couldn't imagine a world without him in it either.

A Grim Retreat33

Astrid and Fishlegs were then able to convince Hiccup to allow him, the dragons and the other riders to take a vacation to the Island of Friga during the events of "A Grim Retreat". However, Astrid and the other riders' dragons then attacked them when they were affected by Grimoras, creatures that stick on to dragon skin. She and the other riders hid in the bushes. Astrid was then able to free Stormfly by touching her soft spot and pushing her into the ocean.

Astrid then discovered that Fishlegs was receiving airmail from Heather in "To Heather or Not to Heather". She helped Heather settle down with her gear.

Astrid and Hiccup hugging

She gets worried when she finds out Hiccup ended in a Hunter trap in "Stryke Out". When the rest of the gang finds a live Hunter, they capture him for interrogation. Astrid bursts into the tent in the middle of the twins' interrogation, lying that another Hunter revealed their location. The Hunter escaped and secretly released a Terror Mail to inform Viggo. Astrid and the team quickly followed the Terror, read the note and followed it to Hiccup's location. Astrid helps locate Hiccup and get him out of the Hunter trap.

She tries to train the baby Death Song, Garff, by singing songs to it in "Tone Death", only to be blasted by bits of amber.

Astrid, Heather, and Snotlout discover that the marble the hunters are mining is being used to construct a dragon-proof fortress in "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" that will end the possibility of a trapped dragon's escape, or the penetration of any dragon outside.

Family On the Edgehiccstrid6

Astrid is shocked to learn Dagur is an "ally" of Hiccup during the events of "Family on the Edge" and distrusts him at first, calling him a traitor, but when she helps him practice dragon-riding, she realizes he is trying to create a new image of himself. When Dagur sees the Dragon Riders' plan against the hunters, she, Hiccup, and the others lock him up despite him telling them the Hunters are trapping them.

While the rest of the gang sets out to find the dragons in "Last Auction Heroes", Astrid and Heather stayed behind as backup, ready to save any Rider who faces Dragon Hunters. Eventually, they both got caught. Thankfully, with Gobber's new friend, Grump, they broke out. She headed off to find Stormfly, but when the Riders gather, they realize Hiccup rapidly sinking to the bottom of the ocean as he was weighed down by a chest. Astrid and Stormfly rush into the water to retrieve him. Astrid then comforts him when he realized that Viggo had taken all of Berk's gold, remarking that they had saved a lot of dragons.

Defenders of the Wing Part 133

At the beginning of the episode "Defenders of the Wing, Part 1", while she was fighting against the dragon hunters, she gets shot in her leg. Upon learning that Hiccup had received a letter from Viggo, Astrid and Heather follow him to meet the Hunter on an isolated seas stack. They circle the island, ready to attack should Viggo attack. Later, when Hiccup was really thrown into the pit of Speed Stingers, she explained to Heather that Hiccup could train almost all dragons—with the exceptions of some like the Speed Stinger. When he was shoved in, she rushed forward, only to be stopped by Mala. The Riders later retaliated, and Astrid tackled her captors, grabbing their weapons. After Hiccup then convinces Mala that they are not working for the Dragon Hunters, Mala frees them and gives them a tour of her island. They go to the cave where the Great Protector is supposed to be only to find him gone, Astrid then spots a Dragon Root arrow on the ground and realizes Viggo had tricked them and stole the Eruptodon. Furious that her dragon is gone, Mala turns again on the Dragon Riders and begins to surround them.

Astrid: "What’s wrong?"
Hiccup: "Nothing’s wrong. It’s just... Well, yeah, Tuff’s right, this is huge. Viggo, Berk, the Edge and my dad placing his trust in me. If the mission fails, we could lose the Dragon Eye forever. That could mean the end of the dragons. They could be hunted to extinction. And I..."
Astrid: "But, they won’t be. Because this mission will not fail."[src]

The episode "Defenders of the Wing, Part 2" takes place where the first part left off as Mala and the Defenders of the Wing begin to surround the Dragon Riders. Hiccup then tries one last time to convince Mala that Viggo had set them up and took the Eruptodon, and promises to go after the Dragon Hunters and bring their dragon back. Mala agrees on the condition that she travels with the Dragon Riders; promising to kill Hiccup if he fails or betrays her. But as they prepare to leave, they notice two Dragon Hunters hiding in the bushes. After Mala manages to drag them out by herself Astrid interrogates them asking which way Viggo went. The tell the Dragon Riders that Viggo went north with the Eruptodon, so that is the direction they head in. They spot a Dragon Hunter ship with Hunters who are ready to battle the Dragon Riders. Hiccup has Mala, who is riding with Snotlout, to stay back since she is not used to fighting while on a dragon. After Hiccup, Fishlegs and Astrid manage to fight the Dragon Hunters, Hiccup decides to search below deck for Viggo. Hiccup and Toothless searched but found no trace of Viggo or the Eruptodon. Mala, however, decides to have Snotlout (who she has selected to be her king) pardon Hiccup, after seeing him and Toothless in battle. The Dragon Riders and Mala realize that the two Hunters left behind were a misdirect, meaning Viggo went south instead of north. While flying, Mala appears to be upset knowing that the Eruptodon is hungry and must constantly eat lava to survive, its hunger is so great that the Eruptodon can eat through the crust of a dormant volcano for its food. Realizing that there is a dormant volcano on Dragon's Edge, Hiccup, and the others learn that Viggo is going to use the dragon to destroy their home. Once they get to Dragon's Edge, Viggo and his men are already there and using the weapons the Dragon Riders built against them, like Astrid's ballista.

Gruff Around the Edges5

Astrid after waking up

Astrid appears to have bad hair when she wakes up every morning in "Gruff Around the Edges".

In "Midnight Scrum", Astrid and Hiccup learn that Viggo has placed a bounty on Hiccup. Despite her wanting to tell Stoick about the bounty, Hiccup says no since he knows his dad has too much to worry about with Berk's being broke. Later that night Astrid hears Stoick calling Hiccup's name and searching for him with Toothless. She tells Stoick about the bounty on Hiccup and goes with him and the other Riders to save Hiccup. Astrid even helps Hiccup stand when they find him without his prosthetic leg.

In "Not Lout", Astrid appears in Snotlout's dream, mocking him along with Heather and Fishlegs, after throwing a coin in his helmet.

As Astrid is about to pass out due to the heat, Throk pleads not to close her eyes and tells her to stay awake for Hiccup and Queen Mala, Astrid then stutters Hiccup's name. The two are then saved by Hiccup, Mala, and Fishlegs.

In "Twintuition" she and the dragon riders to to Viggo's base to help the twins after they got captured by the dragon hunters, Viggo and Ryker.

Blindsided3

In "Blindsided", Astrid and Hiccup are trying to train Sleuther. After being told by Fishlegs that there were multiple storm fronts approaching, they went back to the main base of the Edge to help bat down the hatches. Astrid was the storm warden, as voted by the others according to Fishlegs. Later, after everything has been put into safety and everyone is in the clubhouse Astrid asks Fishlegs whether he had locked the stable doors. Fishlegs is not sure, so Astrid heads back out to check. She heads there and the stable is set on fire by a lightning strike, and Astrid is telling all the dragons to get out of the stables, and then goes back in to free a trapped dragon. While heading out of the stables a bolt of lightning strikes right in front of her, blinding her and knocking her out. Hiccup rescues Astrid and takes her back to the clubhouse. Astrid wakes up and says she can not see, and the gang finds out that Astrid is blind. Hiccup has the others leave so he can talk to Astrid alone. He tries to be an encouragement to Astrid, which she realizes but it doesn't work. Hiccup then tells her to get some sleep, and Astrid requests him to stay with her, which he does. The next morning, Astrid is given the Thorston test checking to see if she can see or not, which Tuffnut incorrectly assumes she is fine. Hiccup and the others are about to head out, and Astrid wants to go find Stormfly, but Hiccup refuses to let her go, putting his foot down. Astrid ends up going with Hiccup and hugs him while on Toothless when he says he is glad that she is here. Toothless lands in a clearing and Astrid calls out for Stormfly but trips over a rock and Hiccup dives and catches her. After getting back up, Astrid hears Stormfly and finds her and goes and hugs her. The moment is short-lived as Sleuther shows back up and Hiccup and Astrid are forced to fight. Hiccup tells Astrid to go hide somewhere, and Astrid refuses. She tries to get onto Stormfly but she does not let her for her safety. Toothless then grabs Astrid and moves her out of the way of an attack by Sleuther, placing her behind a rock. Astrid stays there as Hiccup and Toothless fight Sleuther and successfully drive him away. Astrid feels hopeless and useless, but Hiccup says that she isn't. He also tells her they have been through a lot together and that there will always be a Hiccup and Astrid. Hiccup acts like he is going to kiss Astrid but is interrupted by Sleuther returning, causing him to grab Astrid and dive out of the way with her. Astrid goes behind a rock again, staying out of the fight. Astrid listens to the noise that Sleuther makes when he is about to attack and shushes Snotlout, and the twins so she can continue to listen to Sleuther. Astrid then hops on Stormfly and flies in firing several spikes at Sleuther.

Hiccup and Astrid Kissing Blindsided

After landing, Astrid grabs a couple of the spikes and walks toward Sleuther, and Hiccup tries to stop her, but she says she knows what she is doing. Astrid bangs the spikes together and calms Sleuther down and then touches his nose when she gets close enough. Later, Astrid has her sight restored by Gothi, and immediately after gets up and hugs Hiccup. Later, Hiccup and Astrid are sitting on the Edge of the stables, and Astrid asks Hiccup if he tried to kiss her earlier, which he confirms, to which she asks him why not. Hiccup responds that he was waiting for the perfect moment to kiss her, but that moment was not the perfect moment. Astrid then says that right now is a perfect time to share a kiss, after which she shares a kiss with Hiccup.

In "Shell Shocked, Part 1", Astrid congratulates Hiccup on his plan to stop Viggo and reassures him when he worries it'll fail. They're just about to kiss when Fishlegs almost catches them, but he assumes otherwise. Astrid says to Hiccup that she wants to keep their new relationship just between the two of them and decide not to tell anyone for the time being. Later, when Ryker and the Shellfire attack Caldera Cay, she worries for Hiccup's safety and tells him to retreat. Hiccup reminds her to keep their relationship secret, to the curiosity of the other Riders. Later, when Astrid and Hiccup are discussing Ryker's next attack, they apologize for letting their feelings interfere with their attack. Leaning in for another kiss, they are interrupted when the Twins enter pitching ideas for Hiccup's endgame dialogue. Near the end, when Hiccup leaves to clear his head, Astrid says she'll hold down the fort while he's away.

She gets captured by Viggo near the end of "Shell Shocked, Part 2", and is held hostage with her axe to her throat. Viggo threatens to kill Astrid unless Hiccup gives him the Dragon Eye. Hiccup, infuriated, tosses the Dragon Eye in the volcano, Viggo lets Astrid go to retrieve it but fails as it falls into the volcano. But the edge near the volcano crumbles under Viggo's feet and he falls to his supposed demise. After that, Hiccup and Astrid agree to keep their relationship out of the war with the dragon hunters, and Astrid pulls Hiccup in and they share a kiss.

Facing a New Leader of the Hunters, and his Dragon Flyers[]

Hiccup: "It's gonna take something we've never thought of to get around that."
Astrid: "But you'll come up with it."
Hiccup: "Thank you. How do you know that?"
Astrid: "Because Hiccup Haddock is the wisest, most talented and brave Dragon Trainer on Earth. And he always comes up with it."[src]

In "Living on the Edge", Astrid went with Hiccup to collect Death Song amber from Garff and his adopted father on Melody Island. However, they discovered that Garff's father was taken and Garff had been seriously wounded. This convinced her and Hiccup that the Dragon Hunters were still a threat despite Viggo's supposed death. In "Sandbusted", Astrid is trying to come up with something to give to Hiccup as a betrothal gift, as it has been almost sixth moon cycles since her betrothal to Hiccup was announced. Astrid says she knows Hiccup better than Fishlegs, and that a getting a gift for Hiccup is difficult because he is not your ordinary Viking. Later after being told by Hiccup that they got a Terror Mail from Johann, Astrid avoids talking to Hiccup by saying that they should not leave Johann waiting. After getting to the Northern Markets, Astrid along with the twins and Fishlegs tries to find a gift for Hiccup, but nothing is good enough to give to Hiccup according to Astrid. Soon, Toothless comes back and Astrid realizes Hiccup is trouble. After going to where Toothless led them, Tuffnut finds Hiccup's leg and claims it for reasons that anger Astrid. Astrid then grabs Hiccup's leg from Tuffnut and yells at him, clearly angry at what Tuffnut said, and yells the word tears at Tuffnut causing him to break down again and cry. Astrid learns that the twins bought a map and uses it with no success at first. After temporarily giving up, Astrid looks at the map and realizes the symbols on the map match the places she can see and decides to keep looking for Hiccup. Shortly thereafter, Astrid and the others break into the place Hiccup and Snotlout are trapped and free them, with Astrid having Toothless grab Hiccup.

Astrid smiling after Hiccup tells her that she is the only gift he needs

After talking to Johann, Hiccup stops Astrid and says he needs to talk to her. Hiccup then gives Astrid his betrothal gift to her, which was his dad's betrothal gift to his mom. Astrid says the gift is perfect and adds that she was unable to find him a gift. Hiccup replies that Astrid did get him a gift, herself, and that is the only gift he needs. Astrid smiles at that and shares a hug with Hiccup. After the hug, Astrid along with Hiccup realizes whose sword Snotlout has and wonders who could have brought it here.

In "Something Rotten on Berserker Island", Astrid went with Hiccup and the other riders to attend Gustav's apprenticeship graduation on Berserker Island. After the ceremony turned into a coup, Astrid, Hiccup, Fishlegs, and Heather went to free their dragons from the Berserker Stables and fight. However, after the dragons were released, the four teens remembered that they won't go near the island, so they had to fight by themselves. Astrid used her axe during the battle against the rebel Berserkers. In the end, Astrid and the other teens succeed in stopping the coup and imprison Savage and his followers.

In "Snotlout's Angels" Astrid gets mad at Snotlout using her axe without permission. Snotlout then says something to her which makes her even more mad. When Hiccup stated that they should go find Snotlout, Astrid says "ugh" in disgust. Later, while flying to find Snotlout, Astrid states that they never gonna find anything out there, but then soon see Hookfang. Once they reach Wingmaiden Island, Astrid, Heather and Ruffnut ride Windshear to find Snotlout. Astrid sends Heather and Ruffnut to keep the chief busy, while she goes and looks for Snotlout. Then she finds him hanging from a rope, helps him and tells him to meet the Riders north. Later, Astrid talks to Snotlout with all the Riders.

In "Dawn of Destruction", Astrid and Hiccup are shown spending all of their time together, neglecting the other Riders. Later, they leave to an island with something Hiccup needs for his secret project. They then wonder if they are putting their relationship ahead of the other Riders, but disagree and enjoy a moonlit flight together. The next day, Hiccup and Astrid return too late to stop the Dragon Flyers from taking over the Edge. Later on Caldera Cay, Astrid is shown to be nerved by Hiccup's secret project to be a second Dragon Eye.

In "The Wings of War, Part 1", Astrid tries to inspire Hiccup to come up with a plan to take back the Edge, calling him the "wisest, most talented and brave Dragon Trainer on Earth". Later, after being defeated by the Singetails again, Astrid comforts Hiccup and agrees with Stoick on harming the Singetails, but Hiccup disagrees and leaves to find another way.

In "The Wings of War, Part 2", Astrid discusses with Stoick on how to handle the Singetails with Hiccup leaving to find another way. Later, when the Riders finally drive the Flyers away, Astrid gives chase to Krogan and discovers that Viggo is still alive. After that, she examines Hiccup's Dragon Eye II with the other Riders.

In "No Dragon Left Behind", the Gang decide that it is time to find Garff a new island to call his own, as he can live on the Edge no longer. Astrid is reluctant to see him go as she had formed a special bond with the young Deathsong, but knows that it will be for the best. On finding a new island which seems "perfect", the riders soon discover the island is actually inhabited by Slither Wings: the dragons take Garff and seem to poison Stormfly. In this episode, Astrid is actually seen to cry despite her tough warrior exterior, demonstrating the tough time she is going through and how deeply she cares about Stormfly. After many failed attempts to heal Stormfly, Astrid even goes as far to punch a Slitherwing in order to retrieve the necessary venom for an antidote, Astrid is relieved to discover that Stormfly is not poisoned: merely grieving the loss of Garff. At this point, Astrid is shown to be so relieved she is almost happy, but still sympathizes with Stormfly's plight, and seems to miss him immensely herself. Fortunately, Garff is soon discovered to be alive, and rescued by Hiccup and Snotlout. Astrid is extremely relieved, as is Stormfly, and they are last seen in the episode saying goodbye to Garff on his new island and flying off, knowing that fortunately, they will see him again.

In "Snuffnut", when Throk comes to ask for Ruffnut's hand in marriage, Astrid is offended by his primitive ways and nearly attacks him. Later, when Tuffnut celebrates Ruffnut's decision to say no to Throk's proposal, Astrid tries to help him see his errors by asking him if he wants to settle down one day. When Tuffnut fakes his death to ensure Ruffnut's happiness, Hiccup and Astrid get Tuffnut to confess and convince him to fix his mistake.

In "Searching for Oswald... and Chicken", while Hiccup and Fishlegs leave with Dagur to search for Heather, Astrid stays on the Edge with Ruffnut and Snotlout to help Tuffnut look for Chicken, later revealed to have her own family.

In "Sins of the Past", Hiccup fills Astrid in on his discoveries of Oswald.

When traveling to deliver metal to Bandit, Astrid's attempts to get Hiccup to notice the necklace fail when he notices a Dragon Eye lens instead. Later, Astrid annoyingly complains to Hiccup that he hasn't noticed the necklace the whole time and states she feels invisible to him. Upset with feeling away from Hiccup, she throws the necklace at him. Later, when the group is cornered in a cave, Astrid reaffirms she's with Hiccup, and assists him with fighting Krogan. Back at the Edge, Astrid apologizes for being silly, but Hiccup apologizes for taking her for granted. He tells her that he loves her, causing her to blush. When Garff is captured by the Flyers, Astrid regrets her decision to bring him on the mission, but soon frees both Garff and his father.

In “Darkest Night”, Astrid comforts Hiccup when Stoick is gravely injured after a Flyer attack. She tells Hiccup of the Hooligan's decision to have Hiccup as Acting Chief, but he refuses. Later, when the Riders are discussing how things would've been different if they never left for the Edge, Astrid is disgusted by Snotlout's "what-if" scenario. When Hiccup snaps at the Riders, Astrid follows him and asks him to think about how things would be if he hadn't shot down Toothless. After the scenario, Hiccup's relieved of his guilt and thanks Astrid for her help. Later, she finds Heather and Windshear injured, rushes to get Hiccup, and is informed that the Flyers have attacked Vanaheim.

In “Guardians of Vanaheim”, Astrid comforts Heather after being attacked by the Flyers and yells at Snotlout for his lack of tact. Later, she, Snotlout and Hiccup leave to fight the Flyers and take cover in a ship after Hookfang is struck by lightning. Afterwards, when Hiccup doubts his decision making, Astrid encourages him to move forward and keep making decisions.

In “King of Dragons, Part 1”, when the Riders pack up to leave for Berk, Astrid berates them on their bemoaning of not being able to see the King of Dragons and reminds them of their adventures. She then advises to put Stoick's condition ahead of the Flyers. Later, going to Hiccup's hut, she sees Hiccup preparing to go to Dramillion Island, despite the Council's orders. She affirms her loyalty to Hiccup and states that she's proud of him, and his father would be to. Astrid: "What if Drago shot them down? What if they need our help? We have to find them."
Fishlegs: "What? But Stoick said..."
Astrid: "It doesn’t matter what he said, if they’ve all been captured. Come on!"[src]

Astrid was first seen at the beginning of How to Train Your Dragon 2, where she participated in Dragon Racing with her friends on Berk, from which she emerged victorious. During the race, Hiccup's father, Stoick, happily referred to her as "my future daughter-in-law."

After winning the race, Stoick approaches her and they have a meaningful conservation, in which the former chief remarks that he had wanted a daughter.

She then almost immediately flies off to find Hiccup and Toothless, eventually catching up with them on an island in the remote areas of Berk (which Hiccup had named Itchy Armpit). Hiccup reveals to her that he has been avoiding his father who has pressured him to become Chief. The news of Hiccup becoming Chief makes Astrid overly excited, but Hiccup is unsure if he is ready to take on such a duty. As Hiccup begins to doubt himself, claiming he is not like his father and hasn't met his mother since he was a baby, Astrid comforts him and tells Hiccup what he is searching for is not out there, but inside himself.

She then gives him a kiss on the cheek before they both see smoke coming from the distance. After discovering the destroyed fortress of Eret, Son of Eret, and hearing about the tyrannical Dragon God by the name of Drago Bludvist, they fly back to Berk to inform Stoick of what they have heard and witnessed. Stoick then orders the villagers to fortify and protect the island from a potential attack as Hiccup chases after him in a desperate attempt to reason with him, with Astrid following them. Astrid persuades Hiccup not to go back to Eret, only for Hiccup to give her a light kiss on her cheek before flying off on Toothless as the hangar doors are closing. Astrid flies off on Stormfly to catch up with Hiccup, barely managing to fly through the closing doors, seconds before they shut. They return to Eret to try to stop him from capturing dragons. Just then, Stoick and other dragon riders catch up to them, and Hiccup decides to go find Drago himself to try to reason with him. After he flies off on Toothless, Astrid mounts Stormfly as she prepares to follow him, but Stoick stops her, instead of ordering her to lead the riders back to Berk before she can even take off.

Later, when Hiccup fails to show back up at Berk, Astrid thinks Hiccup was captured by Drago and his men, unaware that Hiccup is actually with his long-lost mother: thus she kidnaps Eret so that he can show them the way to Drago. At first, Eret declines, but Astrid drops him from a great height before getting Stormfly to catch him, scaring him into taking them to Drago. The group is captured shortly after arrival and sentenced to be executed. Eret then defects and assists Astrid in freeing Stormfly. After Astrid finds Hiccup, she is relieved and asks him where he has been. Hiccup then tells her about his mother Valka and she is surprised to see her still alive. Soon, Stoick is killed by Drago and his Bewilderbeast using a mind-controlled Toothless. Arriving at the scene of Hiccup and Valka crying over the dead body of Stoick, she rushes over to Hiccup and places her comforting arm on him tenderly while he is crying on Stoick's hand. Drago's Bewilderbeast then takes control of all the other dragons—including Stormfly—and heads for Berk with a much larger dragon army.

Astrid and the others shoot flaming arrows onto Stoick's ship to give the chief a funeral. She then listens as Hiccup declares that he will continue his father's legacy and that they will go back to Berk, defeat Drago, and rescue Toothless and the other dragons. They fly back to Berk riding on baby Scuttleclaws, who are immune to the Bewilderbeast's control. During the final battle against Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Astrid cheers Hiccup on as he and Toothless face off against the evil Dragon God. After Hiccup and Toothless return the dragons back to their side and defeat Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Astrid is happily reunited with Stormfly and hugs her. She walks over to Hiccup, happy to see what he has finally found, reminding him that it was inside himself what he had been searching for, as she had told him earlier. She teasingly pokes his chest, causing the glide fin on his back to pop out, and they both laugh. Hiccup then pulls Astrid into another kiss, saying, "Come here, you." After the kiss, she celebrates as Hiccup is coronated the new Chief of Berk.

Problems with Drago's Army[]

While dealing with Drago Bludvist and his army of armored dragons, Astrid, the rest of the Dragon Riders, and Valka flee attack to several different locations on and around Berk. This includes the Berk village, Berk Forest, Itchy Armpit Island, the Dragon Sanctuary, and icy region, and a volcanic cavern where Drago's Bewilderbeast is laired. Astrid and the Riders fend off the Bewilderbeast and free many dragons by shooting off their armor.

After the War[]

Hiccup: "Don't worry, Berk won't be neglected, because I'm appointing you as acting chief while I'm away!"
Astrid: "Oh, really? Yay! Then my first decree is to appoint Gobber as the new acting chief while I keep our actual chief out of trouble."[src]

When an emissary from Nepenthe came to Berk, seeking help, Hiccup decided to help him. He appointed Astrid as acting chief, but she quickly gave the role to Gobber so that she could look after Hiccup.

On the way to Nepenthe, the riders were accompanied by Tidal Class dragons, greeting their new Alpha. Astrid even touched a Seashocker, while joking about Snotlout. When the riders were approaching the destination, they heard an earthquake coming from the island. Astrid stated that it must be a problem Calder told them about.

When they arrived on the island, Astrid suggested that the numerous hot pools could be Screaming Death tunnels, although they wouldn't be filled with water. She then met Mik, the king of Nepenthe. Later, she found tunnels underneath the island but stated that they were too small for a Screaming Death.

At dinner, she didn't allow Snotlout to eat, but the other dragons began eating all the food anyway. Suddenly, most dragons and riders collapsed, except for Astrid, Hiccup, Eret, Valka and their dragons. Calder appeared from behind and Astrid took a battle-ready position. She then realized that there was something in the hot pools that made the others fall asleep. When Calder revealed his dragon scale tattoos, Astrid was quite shocked.

Astrid was then locked up along the others, listening to Calder's speech. When Hiccup broke free, Astrid covered for him, allowing him to escape and bring their dragons. Before they could leave the island, some Foreverwings woke up, creating havoc in the village. Astrid then helped to get the people to safety. After Hiccup defeated Calder, she asked him if he was okay, to which he replied that he was "better off than The Serpent's Heir".

After returning back to Berk from Nepenthe, Hiccup appointed Astrid as his General to ensure Berk's continued growth and safety.

Telling Stories of the Fallen[]

After being trapped in a cave surrounded by rogue dragons, Astrid, the rest of the gang without dragons along with Gobber, Eret, and Valka sit around, waiting for Toothless—the only dragon around—to regain his energy. They share stories, and Astrid retells the brief events of her conversation with Stoick before following Hiccup to Itchy Armpit. Valka, upon hearing the story, expresses her gratitude to Astrid for taking care of Hiccup and being the daughter they always wanted. Soon, they light their weapons ablaze and break out of the cave.

Fighting the Silkspanners and the Dragonvine[]

Dragonvine-AstridStormfly1

Toothless reopens a cave on an unnamed island, Astrid, the other Dragon Riders, and the company all fight off frenzied Silkspanners and free the other dragons caught up in the Silkspanner's webbing. The Silkspanners retreat. Astrid, along with Eret, Gobber and the Twins find an island covered in dragonvine with some seemingly helpless farmers. One of the people slaps Hiccup and Astrid jumps to his defense angrily.

Later, this group splits up and Hiccup, Gobber and Astrid return to the island with the Silkspanners. They find a mother and her hatchlings. Meanwhile, Toothless unknowingly carried a bulb of dragonvine tucked in his saddle and it grows explosively, poisoning him. The baby Silkspanners suddenly swarm over him, eating the dragonvine and somehow sucking out the poison, thus saving him. The group returns to the island, saving Eret, the Twins, and their dragons from the farmers, who were growing the dragonvine to protect themselves and their island from people like Drago Bludvist. The farmers and the riders come to terms, and the farmers welcome the Silkspanners back to their island. Hiccup says to Astrid that perhaps he should open Berk's borders to humans and dragons in need.

Assisting a New Dragon Rider[]

Astrid has taken up crafting herbal tonics at some point after the events of How to Train Your Dragon 2. She encounters a stranger on the island of Havenholme and his strange dragon. After initially being suspicious, she realizes that the pair - Scribbler and Patch - are acquaintances of Hiccup. She offers to trade some herbs Scribbler has for some of her health tonics. She also helps him find the source of a distressed dragon's roar on the island. Later she helps deliver items and messages to Scribbler on his quest and continues to provide health elixirs.

Facing Grimmel the Grisly[]

This section requires expansion.

Astrid has her first appearance of the film alongside her fellow Dragon Riders on board a ship owned by the Warlords. There, she and Stormfly aid the other Riders in rescuing some captive dragons, before she and her dragon head back home to Berk with the others. Later that evening, she is detained by Gobber, who suggests tactlessly that they get married, pleading Astrid to consider it with the words: "Please. Marry him. You're the only one with any sense around here."

She later soars up a cliff on Berk to approach Hiccup and Toothless. They converse on several pressing issues, including the forthcoming expectation of attack, the prospect of marriage, and the possibility of relocating to a land thought to exist beyond the edge of the world. Astrid finds the idea both ridiculous and a little bit irritating, saying sarcastically: "Yeah, Hiccup, I think we need a real plan here." Their chat is interrupted by Toothless running off down the cliff, having caught the scent of the Light Fury. When Astrid and Hiccup follow him, they see the Light Fury, and marvel at her, Astrid saying wondrously: "He's not the only one. Another Night Fury." As the Light Fury startles, having spotted the two Vikings, she flies away in alarm, hastily cloaking herself, causing Hiccup to suggest that perhaps they're not quite the same. "No, not quite," he tells Astrid, "It's more like a... Bright..." when Astrid interrupts with the name: "A Light Fury." Hiccup agrees that her suggestion is probably better. Later, after Grimmel's attack on the village, a meeting is held in the Great Hall, during which Hiccup voices his idea of relocating to the supposedly mythical "Hidden World" of the dragons, or at least off the map so that no hunters can find them and their dragons. Despite Astrid's earlier doubt, she is supportive of Hiccup's idea and when the proposal is met with outrage, slams her axe down on the table with the words: "Hey. Hear what he has to say." Thus, with Astrid's support, the exodus of Berk begins.

During the exodus, Astrid is seen riding with Stormfly and carrying all her belongings in saddlebags, whilst conversing with Valka along the way. When the Light Fury appears following the Berkians through the clouds, Astrid notices her, and laughs along with the others as she knocks Hiccup from his saddle. Later, they come across the island later to be known as New Berk where they decide to settle for the time being.

SOD-HiddenWorld-Astrid1

In the concurrent events of the "Hidden World" Expansion in School of Dragons, Harald Forkbeard is able to sneak into the School and set off a huge explosion. Astrid expresses self-recrimination at not having stopped Harald and causing damage to the School and putting lives in danger. She later accompanies the player to talk to Nikora Stormheart about the new threat in the Archipelago, Grimmel the Grisly. She shows severe mistrust of Harald but reluctantly agrees to listen to Nikora's thoughts. Astrid also has to face Cloudjumper in battle. The dragon has been drugged with Deathgripper venom and mindlessly fires upon Astrid and Stormfly. They crash to the ground with only minor injuries.

Remembering the Dragons at Snoggletog[]

About ten years after the dragons returned to the Hidden World, Astrid and Hiccup are living peacefully together on New Berk with their two children, Zephyr and Nuffink, alongside all the other Berkians. Astrid hangs Snoggletog decorations in their home, while Hiccup leaves gifts for Toothless as a symbol of friendship. As the family prepare for Snoggletog, Astrid has clearly grown into a kind and responsible Viking parent, praising her son for being able to "take a hit" and her daughter for her trap-making. Since Zephyr set the traps up against dragons however, Astrid and Hiccup then discover that Zephyr and perhaps other children in the village are fearful of dragons front he stories they have heard about them. Naturally, Astrid and Hiccup are horrified at this idea, and cannot fathom why their children would hate the dragons they adore. Astrid comes up with the idea to hold a Snoggletog Pageant like they used to on Old Berk, in order to showcase their friendship with the dragons, and teach some positive messages about the creatures to the children of Berk. Astrid works with Hiccup, Gobber, and the other villagers to put the pageant together in just a few days. She works behind the scenes, assisting Hiccup with his Mechanical Toothless Puppet suit. During the performance, however, the stage catches fire, and the pageant dissolves into chaos: Astrid escapes from the back of the stage. Fortunately, the pageant is salvaged with the appearance of the real life Toothless, and everyone goes home. The Haddocks walk home with Gobber and invite him to come and spend the evening with them. Astrid and the others then discover a strange green-glowing rock in place of the fish offering they left to remember Toothless. She and her family rush outside just in time to see Toothless and his family flying away into the distance. She and Hiccup agree that it might be time to go and visit them.

A month or so later, Astrid and her family set out in a boat from Berk towards the Hidden World, where they reach the Caldera and come across Toothless and the Light Fury sat outside on a rocky outcrop. After Toothless' and Hiccup's reunion several minutes later, Astrid and Stormfly appear in the sky alongside them, evidently having been reunited offscreen. Triumphantly, they soar through the sky, Astrid joyfully happy at being reconciled with her dragon, their friendship having never been forgotten.
