"Featherhide" is the fifth episode of the first season of Dragons: The Nine Realms.
Synopsis[]

Plot[]
While the dragon club spends a day flying through the fissure, Thunder is attracted to lightning created by a storm, but Tom has to stop him before they are spotted by a passing helicopter. After avoiding the helicopter, the dragon club heads home, unaware they are being followed by a cloaked dragon. Meanwhile, Alex begins investigating the figure from the drone footage and realizes it is connected to Tom. Alex's parents, Carla and Hazel, ask her to join them on their day off to catch fireflies, but they are interrupted by another earthquake. Alex turns her moms down offer down and she reluctantly goes out to find Tom.
Back at the cave, the dragon club goes over various tricks ways to keep their dragons hidden in case they are in danger of being spotted as the cloaked dragon watches. They hear Alex searching for them and go out to avoid having the dragons being discovered. However, the dragons get curious about Alex and she discovers them. Alex runs off in terror and the cloaked dragon follows her back to herd dome. Back at her dome, Alex discovers the cloaked dragon is inside and wandering around. At first, Alex believes it is a trick being played by Tom but is proven wrong when the dragon uncloaks itself and she sees its real. Alex's panic causes the dragon to cloak itself and she tries to flee the dome where the other kids are waiting. They try to convince Alex the dragons she saw in the woods were just people in costumes, but Alex knows they're real and explains there is one in her house.
The secret is exposed to Alex when D'Angelo slips up and Thunder shows himself. The cloaked dragon's presence is also revealed when Alex trips on it and it unleashes a deafening roar. When Alex sees her moms heading home, she tries to tell them, but the others ask her to keep the secret to protect the dragons. When Alex's moms come home, they are excited to see she's made friends and Alex keeps the secret. Tom lies that they are visiting Alex to have to watch some movies, and Alex's moms offer to help out. Things are complicated by the still cloaked dragon wandering around causing trouble. Believing the kid's nervousness is being cause by their presence, Alex's moms leave them to go catch fireflies. The dragon club tries to catch the cloaked dragon, but they can't find what they can't see and only scare it. When the cloaked dragon shows an interest in Alex, Tom guesses that it saw the dragon club's bond with their dragons and is curious about Alex. Alex admits she is frightened by animals and the outdoors because of an incident when she was younger where she tried to pet a dog that followed her home, only for it to bite her and chase her, which led to her shutting herself inside all the time. Tom explains that even though the outdoors can be dangerous, it can be amazing too, and that the dragon followed her home because it has connected with her.
Tom shows Alex how to connect with the dragon and gets it to calm down and reveal itself. Afterward, the group tries to get the cloaked dragon and Thunder home, but it gets more complicated when they discover all the dragons have followed them and that Philip has set up spotlights to help navigate the dark during earthquakes. When Thunder is unable to disable the spotlights, the group uses their new hiding tricks to conceal their dragons and get out of Rakketown. During the escape, Alex and the cloaked dragon get separated from the others and end up at the area where Alex's moms are catching fireflies. The cloaked dragon manages to use its concealing abilities to hide itself and Alex until the latter's mothers go home. Everyone returns to the cave where both Alex and the dragon, which she names Feathers, become more interactive with others. Seeing Alex and Feather's bond causes Tom to realize that the reason Thunder went towards the lightning earlier is because Thunder is searching for his family and promises to help find them.
