Fafnir is a god in Norse Mythology who is mentioned very briefly in the Dreamworks Dragons Franchise.

Mythology[]

Fafnir is the son of Hreidmar and guarded his father's house of gold and treasure. At one point, Loki inadvertently killed Fafnir's brother Otr and in recompense, gave Hreidmar the cursed gold and a cursed special ring. Loki did warn Hreidmar about the curse. Later, Fafnir wanted the ring and his father's treasures for himself and killed his father for it. Fafnir, overcome with greed, set up a place in the wilderness to hoard the treasure and turned into a dragon to protect it from all others. Another brother, Regin, was also greedy for the treasure and sent his foster-son to kill Fafnir the dragon. Sigurd killed Fafnir, but Fafnir was able to warn Sigurd about the curse. Sigurd was not concerned. His cooked up some of Fafnir's heart and ate it, which gave him the ability to understand the birds. From this Sigurd learned Regin was planning to kill Sigurd and take all the gold. Sigurd killed Regin first.

Games[]

Dragons: Rise of Berk[]

Fafnir's name is used to describe a seasonal decoration called Fafnir's Treasure, which consists of a half-buried treasure chest amongst some boulders.

Dragons: Titan Uprising[]

Fafnir is referenced in the description of a Skrillknapper of the same name - Fafnir.

There is a legend about this Dragon that has circulated among many Viking tribes for generations. The tale tells of the God Loki tricking a dwarf out of his golden hoard and a cursed ring that gradually made its way into the hands of the Dwarf Prince Fafnir. The power of the ring’s curse gradually transformed the Halfling Prince into a hideous reptile who spat lightning at anyone approaching his hoard. The same tale tells of this Dragon’s death at the hands of the legendary hero Sigurd, but as the Dragon exists today, we can assume its traits have been borrowed to embellish the mythological tale.
