Plot[]
With everyone at ICARIS aware of the dragon secret, the Dragon Club now works to keep the dragons under control. Tom has become famous as the "dragon whisperer", something the rest of the Riders find somewhat irritating, as often only Tom is given credit for the group's victories. The Dragon Club works together to catch a stray Terrible Terror, but Tom steals Alex's chance to capture it, and Eugene believes Tom has become a glory hound due to his new fame. When he gets home, Tom admits to his mom that he is overwhelmed with containing and managing the dragons. Olivia suggests he let the other dragon riders help, but Tom points out that his deeper connection to the dragons has caused the whole town to turn to him to fix all dragon problems and is quickly proven right when the other parents ask for his help on several matters. Olivia sends the parents home, and Tom insists that since he was the one who revealed dragons to the world, he is responsible to keep them safe, and that his showboating is to keep everyone in ICARIS excited about dragons so they will be more likely to protect them.
Jun notices the stress Tom is under and holds a meeting with the other dragon riders without him to discuss it, but before they can, Tom finds them. However, their discussion is interrupted when Olivia alerts them about another dragon problem. It is revealed that dozens of Terrors, Snowtails, Vine Tails and Scuttleclaws are coming from the fissure and are causing havoc. Tom decides to investigate why the dragons are coming up, while the other dragon riders corral the dragons in ICARIS. D'Angelo and Jun object to Tom going alone, and ask to go with him, but Tom insists that keeping the dragons from escaping ICARIS and revealing the secret is too important to risk.
Tom finds the source of the dragons in a new cave entrance that leads to a new area of the Nature Realm. However, Tom's self-appointed duty gets the better of him, and snaps at Thunder, making the latter frustrated at Tom as well. Tom apologizes, and voices that he's under a lot pressure by the parents and the people of RAKKE town; but the duo are suddenly attacked by a raging Deadly Nadder. Back at ICARIS, the riders catch as many dragons as they can, and confine them to the ICARIS infirmary. When Eugene complains about why Tom won't let them help, Jun and D'Angelo admit they feel that neither Tom nor their parents trust them to help.
Meanwhile, Tom and Thunder managed to hide from the rage-filled Nadder, and then discover that its rampage is the reason why the dragons are fleeing to ICARIS. Believing that the dragon is extremely aggressive because Buzzsaw tried to trap it, he tries to bond with it, against Thunder's wishes. However, Tom's attempts failed when two more Nadders show up, making the first one aggressive again, and then all three Nadders attack the duo. Thunder quickly rescues Tom, with the latter still unable to figure out why they are so aggressive.
Back in RAKKE town, the other dragon riders struggle to contain the dragons, and May and Philip protest that things are getting out of control and want Tom to deal with the situation. But D'Angelo and the others beg for the chance to prove that they can handle things like Tom, and their parents hesitantly gave them a chance. Jun then remembers that she learned from the book of dragons that dragons are terrified of eels and comes up with plan to use that fear to help contain them. Meanwhile, Tom discovers that Thunder was hit with a Nadder spine on his shoulder and can't fly with it stuck in there. Tom tries to pull it out but can't manage to remove it without causing Thunder immense pain. Tom then breaks down and admits that he is overwhelmed and can't handle things like Hiccup could. However, Thunder encourages him, and unexpectedly manages to pull out the spine just as the Nadders find them. Thunder proceeds to battle the trio of Deadly Nadders, but is outnumbered and quickly overpowered. Tom quickly comes to his aid and uses his sword to battle alongside his dragon. But when Tom is cornered by one of the Nadders, Thunder unleashes a powerful display of his lightning power and causes all three Nadders to submit and leave them alone. Tom was in awe by what he saw, but before he and Thunder return home, they discover that the real reason why the Nadders went wild was because someone ransacked their nest and took the Dragonsite in it, which Tom blames Buzzsaw for.
Eugene finds a box of rubber Halloween snakes, which resemble eels enough to scare the dragons. When the captured dragons escape the infirmary, the dragon riders place the rubber snakes around RAKKE town, and it scares the dragons back to the Hidden World, which finally earned praise from the people, including the other riders' parents. Later, Tom apologizes for trying to live up to his ancestor's legacy, to the point that he tried to do everything himself, and admits he needs his friends now more than ever. The others forgive him, much to Eugene's frustration, and Jun points out that even Hiccup had a team of his own to help him. Meanwhile, Linda secretly meets with Sledkin, who reveals that it was Sledkin who raided the dragonsite from the Nadder's nest, and it was also her that blasted a hole in the fissure that led to the new realm in search of it. She plans to keep mining the gems behind everyone's back while they are distracted by the dragons.
