Overview[]

Set 1,300 years after the events of How to Train Your Dragon, dragons are now just a legend to the modern world. When a geological anomaly opens up an immense, miles-deep fissure in the Earth's surface, scientists from all over the world gather at a new research facility to study the mysterious phenomenon. Soon a group of misfit kids, brought to the site by their parents, uncover the truth about dragons and where they've been hiding — a secret they must keep to themselves to protect what they've discovered. Set one thousand-and-three hundred years after the events of How to train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World, our story takes place in the modern world, where dragons are things of fantasy, myth, and legend. After a comet nearly collides with earth and causes a great tectonic up-heaving — creating an immense, mysterious fissure — scientists come from around the world and build a state of the art research facility. We’ll meet Tom Kullersen, an adventure-seeking kid, whose mom is a lead scientist at the lab, who secretly discovers that dragons exist and hidden in the fissure is an entrance to the Hidden World. Tom bonds with a Nightlight dragon who has lost his home. One by one, three other teenagers learn Tom’s secret and bond with their own dragons, forming a new group of dragon riders.

Season 1 introduces us to this new world, characters, and a brand-new team of hero dragons. The riders will make startling discoveries about dragons and their world, and vow to keep the secret of their existence from those on the surface who might want to do them harm.

Douglas Sloan first hinted at the series on Twitter in March, 2020, stating that a new "dragons" series was coming set in modern times.[1][2]

From what I know there IS a new Dragons show in the works however it is NOT HTTYD related. From what I know it takes place in present times and nothing do with Berk or Hiccup.

The series was officially announced by DreamWorks on October 13, 2021 with the release of a teaser and a single promotional still.

Trivia[]

  • With the confirmation from John Tellegen that the series takes place in the twenty-first century, the statement that it also takes place “1,300” years after the events of the legacy franchise is an inconsistency since it’s been confirmed multiple times that the legacy franchise takes place in the eleventh century; not the eighth.
  • DreamWorks' social sites quoted The Nine Realms supervising producer, Beth Sleven, for Native American Heritage month in November, 2021.[3]
  • The series' name is derived from the Norse cosmological concept of the "Nine Realms"; the belief in nine different worlds, each inhabited by different beings, including humans, gods, giants, elves, etc.
  • Based on the opening scene of the first episode, the series seems to be set in Canada. In addition, the discovering of Viking artifacts in “Follow the Lightning, Part 2”, may imply that the series is set in Vinland, the parts of Canada that were settled upon by the Vikings.
  • Some themes from composer John Powell were used in the first season but the main score is composed by Patrick Cannell who did the theme song of the series.
  • As of the season 5 finale, all of ICARIS now knows of the dragons existence.
  • It remains unknown what happened to Linda after she tells the Dragon Riders Wilma's phone number.
