A forest fire? I'm starting to think this expedition is cursed.
  — Sledkin

"Downpour" is the fourth episode of the second season of Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Synopsis[]

Tom and Thunder train a new species of aggressive tidal dragons to help the other riders put out a forest fire threatening ICARIS.

Plot[]

In the forest near the Fissure, there is the "Burne Lumber Company" that cuts down trees and uses them for products. On this particular day, the company is busy at work, with three adult brothers cutting down the trees, and their unstable boss, Leonard Burne, who demands to be called "Buzzsaw", is supervising and having a drink, until he gets frustrated at his employees for not continuing their work because they ran out of gas for their saws. Buzzsaw, determined to make his family's company succeed, decides to switch from gas to electric. However, he overloads the socket, unknowingly sparking a fire.

Meanwhile, Tom explores the crystal realm alone with Thunder, while trying to find something that might explain his connection with Thunder and his family's Viking helmet. During the exploration, the two discover a large lake area. Tom debates whether to tell the others about his discovery or wanting to find answers to his connection with Thunder first. Suddenly, they are startled by a large aquatic dragon breaching from the lake, but he loses his helmet in the water. When he dives in and retrieves it, he is almost swallowed by the dragon until Thunder rescues him. When he meets up with the rest of the dragon club, they aren't pleased with his lone-wolf behavior, and Jun reminds him that they have to stay together as a team. Suddenly, they get an alert from ICARIS

The ICARIS staff are alerted to a forest fire, which is at the moment heading away from ICARIS. Linda tries to observe the fire using a drone, but the blaze obscures their vision. When May Wong remembers the logging company which is working in the forest, Olivia and Philip volunteer to help evacuate the area, but Sledkin opposes the idea of risking company property and legal liability in rescue attempts. May then distracts Sledkin, and secretly gives Olivia the keys to a van to help.

When the dragon club sees Olivia and Philip leave to help evacuate, Tom decides that they should follow them on their dragons in case they need more help. At the Burne Lumber Company, the loggers are left stranded in the fire since Buzzsaw, who left to get more gas, took their only van before the fire started. They decide to abandon the company and run for their lives, but the road becomes blocked by a falling burning tree. The dragon club arrives at the forest fire area and then they split up. Jun and Tom secretly help Olivia and Philip, while D'Angelo and Alex fly the loggers over the fallen tree using Feathers' cloaking to hide her. The loggers are found by Olivia and Philip, but their story about how they were saved is dismissed as delusions from smoke inhalation. Suddenly, Buzzsaw drives by them and into the fire, desperate to save his family's company. However, he is distracted by a glimpse of Thunder, and then crashes his car. He gets out of the car, and at first it seems the damage was minimal, but the gas he carried in his car ignites, causing an explosion, and it spreads the fire even more.

When the explosion drives the fire towards ICARIS, Sledkin blames May for letting Philip and Olivia go out on their own; but she defends her decision and criticizes Sledkin's concern of the company over the lives of others. With the fire getting worse, and Wu and Wei beginning to run out of firepower, Tom gets an idea and runs off on his own with Alex following him on feathers. Tom and Thunder return to the lake, where Tom tries to find a way to train the dragons, (who he names Floodfangs) to put out the fire, but it almost ends with him being eaten until Alex and Feathers save him. Tom explains his plan, but Alex warns him he can't keep acting alone. He apologizes and explains that he's been traveling for so long with only his mom, he has trouble getting close to others and promises to try harder to work with the others. After learning that the Floodfangs eat glowing bugs that live in the water, Alex uses fireflies to lure the Floodfangs to the fire. The Floodfangs arrive at the fire and release a large amount of water that douses the fire. Tom promises to be more open to the group, and then they lure the Floodfangs back to their lake.

Leonard sees his company completely burned to the ground, and vows vengeance on the one who started it, unaware that it was his own fault. He sees Thunder flying away and believes it to be a "lightning bird" that started the fire. At the lake, Jun asks Tom what he's been hiding, and Tom reveals his personal connection between his ancestors and Thunder and asks that it be kept secret from D'Angelo and Alex.
