What changes occur when a Deadly Nadder becomes a Titan? toggle section
When a Deadly Nadder becomes a Titan, it undergoes several physical changes. The Titan Wing Deadly Nadders have more spikes on their heads, backs, and feet. Their body turns greenish with pink lines, and their horns and spikes also become pink. They also develop blue spots on their wings. However, in the School of Dragons game, players can choose the color, so they don't have a specific one. It's also worth noting that Titan Wing Deadly Nadders are significantly stronger and larger than their adult counterparts.

Official Description

Deadly Nadders can suddenly raise the hundreds of sharp spines that stud their hides and tails and fling them with incredible accuracy. But when the shooting starts, there is no safer place to be than face-to-face with a Nadder — If you stand right in front of its nose, a Nadder won't be able to see you. Don't sneeze!

Development

Character Designer Nicolas Marlet imagined that this dragon was an ancestor of a bird. This idea inspired the animation of the Deadly Nadder, which "moves like a parrot", with bit of an emu's walk and the posture of a Tyrannosaurus rex tossed into our blend of behaviors," says Head of Character Animation Simon Otto.
The Art of How to Train Your Dragon

True to its inspirations, most of the Nadder's concepts revolve around a bipedal dragon armored with spikes and a mouth resembling that of a parrot, as seen by various sketches by Nico and Tony Siruno.

Earlier concepts, such as Nadder by Nico Marlet and Kathy Altieri, as well as Nadder by Nico Marlet, depicted this species with two pairs of legs. The former had a stance somewhat like a crocodile, as its posture was similar to the crocodile's signature "high walk". The latter has relatively tiny forearms, similar to that of a Tyrannosaurus rex.

Whereas concept art, such as Nadder by Tony, depicted the dragon with more of a Velociraptor-like stance — its back pushed forward, almost parallel to the ground, and is depicted running. Tony's concept also involved feathers, hinting once again at the Nadder's dinosaur origins.

The details of the Nadder, particularly the colors, are also inspired by the parrot and the ostrich.

Director Dean DeBlois felt that an animation could break away from the limitations seen in live-action films, where propane flames are usually due to being easier to extinguish, thus decided to give the dragons a range of fires.[1] The Deadly Nadder was then given what visual effects supervisor Craig Ring described as "a sparkler type of fire like Asian fireworks, fueled by a magnesium powder that flashes in a white-hot blur with explosive sparks and blowtorch-like flames."

When animating the Deadly Nadder, the team mainly emotes through body languages and head angles but keeps facial expressions limited. Simon Otto mentions that head angle changes eye darts, and posture adjustments are mainly used to convey emotions for the Deadly Nadder, much unlike the Night Fury, which relies heavily on facial expressions. The Nadder's quick and lithe changes help emphasize its bird-like qualities.[2]

Physical Appearance

ROB-DN Egg
Nadder egg sod

Egg

In the promotional material for the first movie, Nadder eggs were described as having sharp spikes that deter predators. A picture of them, though, shows smooth blue eggs with no spikes whatsoever. The egg provided in the promotional material is similar to that in School of Dragons.

In Dragons: Rise of Berk, the Nadder egg has a somewhat irregular form with an obvious scales pattern and visible spikes. They come in a variety of colors as the color of the Nadder after it has hatched is similar to the color of its egg.

Hatchling to Adult

In appearance, the Deadly Nadder is very beautiful and bird-like: it is bipedal, possesses winged forelimbs, and is about the same size as medium-sized theropod dinosaurs, such as Allosaurus. Its small yet keen eyes, equipped with poor binocular vision, are one of the tools it uses to stalk its targets.

Its body is vividly colored, with a light beige underbelly, while its wings are mottled, darker shades. In front of its eyes is its curved nasal horn, which is often used to batter opponents; its lower jaw is shorter and wider than its upper, giving it an overbite.

Ringing its skull is a crown of spikes. Coating the tail is a series of poisonous spines which can be fired at an opponent with deadly accuracy. When relaxed, its head spikes and venomous tail spines lay flat, but when alarmed, they shoot upward to intimidate its foe. The tail spikes can also be used to make a rattling noise which it makes right before it attacks, similar to a rattlesnake's.

The live models and puppets used in How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular are also brightly colored and detailed. There are fewer spikes on the tail, and — presumably due to difficulty with technical aspects — the spikes do not raise or lower or shoot out. The live models definitely resemble the body type of bipedal dinosaurs.

A body suit of a "fledgling" Nadder was also created. This "fledgling" is not about to fly and has a reduced wing size.

Female and Male Nadders

The nasal horn of female Deadly Nadders are longer and more curved than those of males, whose horns are short and straight. The males are also larger in body size. Female Nadders also have a slight overbite that resembles a beak, while male Nadders have complete underbites and more robust jaws.

Titan Wing

Titan Wing Deadly Nadder

Titan Wing Deadly Nadders have more spikes on their head, back, and feet. Their snouts are broader as well. Their body is greenish with pink lines, and they possess some blue spots on the wings.

Abilities

Firepower

Main article: Fire Types
Stormfly's fire melts a Sea Stack

Before Fireworms were added to the franchise, Nadders had the hottest fire of all dragon species and still have one of the hottest. The Deadly Nadder firepower is known as a magnesium blast. It's been said that the Nadder's fire is hot enough to melt metal and turn Vikings into ash. Stormfly also has been seen melting solid rocks within seconds and is able to use a type of fire similar to a Razorwhip. Stormfly has been witnessed shooting an intense, blinding white fire that appears to be even hotter than the normal Nadder fire. Some Deadly Nadders have also been seen shooting green fire. Combined with a Gronckle's lava blast, the Deadly Nadder's magnesium blast can destroy dragon proof chains.

In Dragons: Race to the Edge, Season 5, Stormfly demonstrated a special type of fire that looks like a welding torch. This fire is intense and a blue-white blast of fire much more powerful than that of a average Nadder.

Spine Shot

It can launch its tail spikes with devastating speed and accuracy

The Deadly Nadder also has at its disposal a tail that is covered in bristling deadly venomous spikes, which are used as projectiles to stun or immobilize its prey. Its tail spikes are its preferred weapon (probably due to the aforementioned blind spot). It can launch its tail spikes with devastating speed and accuracy.

As discovered by Snotlout, when he exchanged dragons with Astrid, they can also shoot a single spine with prestine accuracy. Snotlout placed a hand on Stormfly's neck, just behind the crown of spikes. This caused her to fire a single spine shot that had such great accuracy to even slice another spine through the middle. This could be the secret ability of Nadders as Stormfly seems to be surprised herself to have this ability. Perhaps it is one of the secrets that Valka had mentioned in How to Train Your Dragon 2. Their spines are so sharp, they are made into spears by the Dragon Hunters.

As seen in "Dragon Flower", when under the effect of the Blue Oleander flower, a Deadly Nadder will even shoot its tail spines when it sneezes.

Venom

This species of dragons possesses a natural armor and is covered in poisonous spines. A Deadly Nadder’s key strength is its ability to shoot hundreds of poisonous needles from its tail at once (also known as "spine shooting").
  School of Dragons Website[3]

It has never been confirmed how venomous a Deadly Nadder's spikes are, and what the exact effects are. In "The Night and the Fury", Dagur says he got hit in the leg by one, but his leg appears to be just fine, possibly suggesting the venom's effects are temporary. The Dragon Eye also indicates that their sharp teeth are venomous as well. It is possible that the venom from both teeth and spines increases the pain like a Gila Monster's does. This can be evidenced in when Stormfly hits Bolt & Float on accident. Upon being hit they started ailing, and looked exhausted. Snotlout was bitten in "Bad Moon Rising" when Ruffnut was testing bite marks on him, and he appeared to be in pain, though this could be an inevitable side-effect of being bitten by multiple different dragons. When Stormfly hit Windshear with a spine in "Maces and Talons, Part 1", she fell immediately out of the sky and seemed to be in pain despite only being nicked. Similarly, Thunder was hit under the wing by a spine, which rendered him unable to fly from the pain until it was removed.

Speed and Agility

Flystorm manages to escape from 3 dragons chasers

Deadly Nadders are extremely fast both on land and in the air. Astrid's dragon, Stormfly, rivaled even Toothless in speed. Astrid discovered that, when put on a diet of chicken, the Nadder's speed increases greatly, but it is implied to only be temporarily and Stormfly isn't still fast as Toothless. They are also quite agile and well-balanced, as Stormfly demonstrated in Trick Contests, and in the first movie in the Arena. They are shown by Flystorm to run slightly faster than other dragons on land such as the Scauldron, Changewing, and Whispering Death. Also shown by Flystorm that Deadly Nadders can fly through a Whispering Death tunnel without issue.

Prehensile Tail

Stormfly and its prehensile tail

Stormfly has proven for their kind to be able to use their tail to grip onto Vikings, as it is strong enough to hold the weight of a Dragon Hunter.

Senses

The Deadly Nadder possesses exceptional speed and poses a significant threat due to its hunting prowess. However, its effectiveness as a predator is hindered by a blind spot beneath its nose, likely caused by its prominent horn. Moreover, according to Book of Dragons, Deadly Nadders can only see things when they move. Consequently, this dragon relies heavily on its acute sense of smell and hearing, often prioritizing these senses over its binocular vision, to locate its prey. This remarkable olfactory ability led to their reclassification as Tracker Class dragons. Even as baby Nadders, they can detect the scent of a human from a distance of one hundred feet, though it remains unclear if this range increases as they mature. Stormfly demonstrated the ability to hear a wild Triple Stryke before anyone else had even spotted the dragon. As noted in Vexclaw's description, a Deadly Nadder's sense of smell is potent enough to allow successful navigation even when its eyesight is impaired.

Strength and Combat

Stormfly and Hookfang battles

The impressive strength of nadders is evident in their ability to effortlessly carry Vikings on their backs without any apparent effort. The Flystorm, in particular, displayed considerable power by supporting both Gobber the Belch and Mildew simultaneously, without compromising its speed compared to other dragons. These creatures also possess an astonishing capacity to transport heavy loads, including bulky metals and fortified enclosures designed to withstand the formidable strength of dragons. For instance, Stormfly showcased this ability by carrying Astrid while accommodating the powerful Snow Wraith. Additionally, Stormfly, a Deadly Nadder, can bear the weight of a monstrous nightmare named Hookfang, weighing up to 5,000 pounds, along with a rider.

Nadders are proven to be great combat dragons as they are seen to fight against Monstrous Nightmares pretty well, and are strong and skilled against many other dragons.

Endurance and Stamina

A adult Deadly Nadder can endure a Thunderdrum hatchling’s sonic blast

Their endurance and stamina are high. These dragons can run and fly for long distances. In the first film, a Nadder was able to take on an attack from Stoick the Vast when he threw a heavy cart at its body and was still able to fly well afterward. As shown in “Bing! Bam! Boom!”, an adult Deadly Nadder can endure a Thunderdrum hatchling’s sonic blast. As shown in "A Matter of Perspective", Deadly Nadders can also make their own spines bounce off of them.

Swimming

Deadly Nadders are shown to be great swimmers

As shown in "Last Auction Heroes" and "Dire Straits" Deadly Nadders are shown to be great swimmers.

Glowing Body

Flightmares suffer the same effects as others when exposed to algae-enhanced glow

By eating glowing algae, a Deadly Nadder can glow, and can adjust its glow brighter to scare off other dragons as shown in "Fright of Passage".

Weaknesses

Blind Spot

Look for its blind spot! Every dragon has one. Find it, hide in it, and strike!
Gobber explaining how a Nadder relies on other senses to make up for its blind-spot

Deadly Nadders have a blind spot right in front of their nose, as it does not possess binocular vision. By staying in its blind-spot, most trainers, or hunters, can carefully evade this dragon's gaze.

Vulnerable Areas

Like most other dragons, Nadders also have a pressure point on the neck, which disables the dragon

As discovered by the Dragon Hunters, when Nadders shoot their spines, their belly is always exposed, making it an easy target for Dragon Hunters, or other hostile dragons. Ryker Grimborn used this against Nadders to shoot them down. In addition, Nadders have a special weak spot under their chin, which when scratched, is extremely comfortable. Like a stereotypical comic-relief reaction of dogs being scratched, Nadder's eyeballs roll up, they gape their mouths open in comfort and their spikes preen downwards. When stroked correctly, some Nadders may collapse momentarily.

Like most other dragons, Nadders also have a pressure point on the neck, which disables the dragon.

Food Motivation

Trained Deadly Nadders are easily bribed with chicken. When this manipulation is used, the dragon could potentially fall under the influence of others, be it good or bad.

Behavior and Personality

If there's one thing you don't want, it's an angry Nadder. [src]
  — Astrid

The Deadly Nadder is one of the most beautiful dragons, and unfortunately, it knows it. It is well-known for its vanity; it constantly grooms itself to stay clean and maintain the luster of its scales. Nadders also eat a significant amount of fish and even graze on plants, as seen in the episode, "Crushing It". However, when it is trained, it becomes very affectionate. These dragons also love to play fetch.

Deadly Nadders are intelligent, but tend to also be flighty - anxious, especially when in the wild. Nadders are so intelligent that some wild populations like the Nimble Nadder have even learned how to use tools and teach tool use to their young.

Despite being vain and skittish, female Nadders have shown strong mothering behavior, so strong that many individuals have even tended to babies not of their own species. This behavior has been demonstrated in Stormfly as well as Fireshrike. It is even shown in Rise of Berk that they will adopt even the eggs of hostile species such as Changewings. Nadders can also be extremely aggressive and protective if someone messes with their nest and use dragonsite to make them.

Springshedder provides some evidence that Deadly Nadders shed scales at least once a year during the Spring when the weather starts to warm up.

Training

To train a Deadly Nadder, one must very carefully approach the dragon from its tail. Then you must gently smooth its spikes down. In addition, one can also train a Nadder by sneaking up on its blind spot, then scratching its chin affectionately.

Like all dragons, relationships are built on trust. By showing an aggressive dragon that you mean no harm and are not much different from them, Nadders will grow to accept you. Nadders that have bonded with their riders can and will bond with others. This is proven when Stormfly easily bonded with someone other than her owner, namely Heather. When she fed Stormfly food, mostly her favorite like chicken, she immediately gained her trust. However, Nadders will still be loyal to their original riders.

How to Train Your Dragon

Main article: Stormfly (Franchise)

The Deadly Nadder was first seen in Hiccup's opening narration on common dragon species, mainly picking livestock off the fields, which during the early morning raid as Hiccup is running Stoick the Vast pulls him back right before running into a Nadder flying by shooting fire, which Stoick sees another Nadder carrying a sheep so he throws a cart at it so the dragon would drop the sheep. Hiccup states they're tough as "a Nadder Spine is enough to at least get me noticed around here" as a group of them begin herding and capturing flocks of sheep, which one of them gets knocked away by the catapult. Later on, Stoick along with a couple more other Vikings subdue three Nadders using a net, although these Nadders escape towards the end of the battle due to Hiccup's bad luck and clumsiness and they make off with a good amount of sheep. When reading the Book of Dragons Hiccup notices the Deadly Nadder page as well as few illustrations of it whilst looking for information on the Night Fury. During the second lesson of Dragon Training Gobber set up an entire maze in the arena which the teens had to navigate through whilst being chased by a Deadly Nadder in order to learn how to stay in the dragon's blind spot which the Twins' fighting makes them fail at doing. The dragon is also seen laughing at Snotlout's pathetic attempt to hit her with a mace and is driven off when Astrid hits her with an axe stuck inside a shield. Hiccup later learns from experience with Toothless that dragons can be subdued by scratching them gently on the side of the neck and the chin, which he uses this in another training lesson with the Nadder so as it deflects Astrid's axe and runs towards Hiccup he subdues the Nadder scratching its neck making it lay down leaving Astrid shocked. When Stoick returns from his failed expedition to Dragon Island but hears how well Hiccup is doing he gets exciting which he states he can't wait for his son to spill a Nadder's gut for the first time. Soon when Toothless takes Hiccup and Astrid to Dragon Island they see Nadders amongst the large flock of dragons offering food to the Red Death which they hide and escape from after it ate a Gronckle. Although when Stoick and the Hooligan tribe arrived to seize the nest every Deadly Nadder and dragon fled the island as the Red Death emerged from the mountain. Later in an attempt to rescue his father and the village Hiccup received help from the gang which the Nadder was given to Astrid naming it Stormfly which Hiccup would ride with leading the others to fight the Red Death. Astrid and Stormfly dropped Hiccup off in the burning boats to rescue Toothless while they assisted the others although the Red Death began inhaling deeply causing the girl and the dragon to get sucked into its mouth and almost eaten if not for Hiccup and Toothless shooting it in the jawline. When Hiccup killed the Red Death and survived the ordeal the Nadders as well as every other dragon cheered for the boy and eventually moved to Berk living amongst the Vikings. At the very end of the film, Astrid is seen riding Stormfly as her pet as they raced Hiccup and Toothless around the village and soon fly with the other riders as they soared over Berk.

Racing For The Gold

In the "Snowboarding" video segment, Hiccup is seen being chased by a pack of wild dragons, which two of them are Nadders, and as he takes shelter in a house, they blast it away. This causes him to use the wood from the building as a makeshift snowboard, doing all sorts of tricks. However, the Nadders and the other dragons eventually catch up to him which one of the Nadders catches his board and tosses him over making him wipe out.

Gift of the Night Fury

Main article: Stormfly's Offspring

When Berk celebrated their first Snoggletog with the dragons, every dragon including the Nadders witnessed the flocks of hundreds of dragons flying in the skies, causing them all to migrate towards the Rookery in order to lay and hatch their eggs. When Hiccup later discovered their island, as he witnessed all the dragons he noticed one Nadder approach her hatchlings and open its mouth for them to eat out of. When he found Stormfly it's revealed that she has three baby Nadders of her own, so she had presumably mated with a male Nadder. Although when Hiccup had Hookfang fly him home, the Nadders and other dragons began to follow. However, the babies were unable to go with them due them not being able to fly in the strong winds. Fortunately, Hiccup found a shipwreck which he had the dragons hold up as they carried the babies in it back to Berk which Astrid was happy to meet Stormfly's babies.

Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon

The Deadly Nadders, along with the other dragons, witnessed with the Vikings as Gobber ranted on, saying a so-called Boneknapper dragon was responsible for the fire.

Book of Dragons

When discussing Bork's past careers as Gobber mentions he was once a blacksmith, but that career was ruined as a Deadly Nadder flew by stealing a Yak that Bork was fitting horse shoes on but the Nadder also stole his anvil and dropped it on his head. Later when showing Bork had very bad luck dealing with Dragons its shown that when he was camping a Deadly Nadder showed up taking a huge bite out of his sandwich making him run away. As they discuss the Nadder, they show Bork was approached by a Deadly Nadder and held up his shield to protect himself from the fierce dragon but the Nadder looked at its reflection in the shield and loved looking at its vanity. According to Astrid, if you walk near a Deadly Nadder's spine-covered tail and show that you're not a threat it will lower its spines and let you touch its tail, but it shows Bork approaching from the back poking its tail with his sword making it shoot all the spines at him causing them to surround him on his shield as he roles away.

Dragons: Riders of Berk

In "How to Start a Dragon Academy", Deadly Nadders are seen throughout the episode causing trouble in the village, along with the other dragons, like pooping over the village or flying around uncontrollably. Even as Hiccup walks through the village a purple Nadder is chasing some chickens but as it does it runs under a women's clothesline which snags onto it causing the clothes to taken away. Later another Nadder tries to grabbing a lady's bread but Hiccup attempts to calm it down which works until a Gronckle startles it and chases it, plus another one is seen getting into a fight with a Monstrous Nightmare that spooks a flock of sheep. However, when the riders found a way to make the dragons work with the people, Nadders are seen following Fishlegs and other dragons as they poop over Mildew's field to fertilize it.

In "Viking for Hire", during Gobber's flashback of the dragon war, a Nadder is seen firing at the Vikings from a rooftop and another flies over the battlefield into the distance, but as it changes to the present one is seen strolling through the village while another is eating out of a feeding troth. During a trivia lesson, Hiccup asks what dragon makes the best welding torch which Astrid and Fishlegs immediately answer that a Deadly Nadder is the best as its magnesium blast burns with the flames of the sun, which they are correct as Hiccup awards points to Team Astrid. Later, as Gobber opened up a Dragon Dentistry, a woman is seen with a Nadder waiting in line to have its teeth fixed.

In "Animal House", as people are going about their day a Nadder helps a man move a heavy barrel into his house, but perched on top of it was another Nadder who took to the skies but bumped into a Monstrous Nightmare starting a fight. The fight continued all the way towards the farm where they unintentionally began scaring the animals so bad, the chickens and yaks stopped producing eggs and milk. When Hiccup was asked to fix this issue, he brought the same Nightmare and Nadder to the arena, where they brought the animals to try and get them to get along, though the dragons bickering with each other scared off a yak. They then try showing the animals that dragons are scared too, as they brought out eels, which seemed to work until the Nightmare gets spooked too badly.

In "Alvin and the Outcasts", when Outcast Island is invaded by wild angry dragons, Nadders are shown flying around, in which a few are seen spraying fire all over the island.

In "Dragon Flower", Gobber claims he witnessed a Deadly Nadder shoot its spines at a man's eyeballs like a grape, but apparently, it wasn't as bad as looking at Mildew's bare behind.

In "Heather Report, Part 1", Hiccup questions how Stormfly is getting faster which Astrid states she's been experimenting with her diet. Turns out Astrid was feeding Stormfly chicken giving her more energy, which Heather uses to get Stormfly to trust and take her to Outcast Island with the Book of Dragons. Although Toothless' improved tail made him much faster retrieving Stormfly and heather but losing the book.

In Heather Report, Part 2, Astrid disguised as Heather claims to Alvin that the Book of Dragons doesn't make anyone skilled at training dragons as proven when Alvin has a solider train an angry Nadder that was being restrained, the solider reads that Nadders love their vanity so he slowly approaches and compliments it while also getting its gender confused but the Nadder tries shooting its spines at him only for Astrid to jump in with a shield protecting the solider from the spines as Astrid's point is proven. Later as the riders attempt to sneak onto Outcast Island, there are wild dragons present, including Nadders who try and attack them, although they all get distracted by fish that the riders drop to lure them away but as Snotlout holds a fish in his hand a Nadder flies by grabbing it and carrying him away, so Hiccup and Toothless chase after them which Snotlout refuses to let go of the fish wanting to eat it but Hiccup makes him let go and catches him as the Nadder happily eats the fish. Alvin has Astrid prove she can really train a dragon by tossing her into the arena which she prays would be a Deadly Nadder but instead is a Monstrous Nightmare.

In "Twinsanity", when news of the Berserkers are visiting Berk for a peace treaty, fearing the Berserkers would go berserk if they knew about the dragons, Stoick orders Hiccup and the riders to hide the dragons, in which they move many dragons, including Nadders, away from the village.

In "Defiant One", in the Outcast arena the Alvin and his men are testing to see which dragons make perfect soldiers which a Deadly Nadder is taking on a hoard of Outcasts and seems to be winning until Alvin grabs its tail and tosses it back into its cell.

Main article: Hiccup's Toy

In "Breakneck Bog", after surviving an ordeal with retrieving a chest from a pack of Smokebreaths, Hiccup brings it home where he finds an old toy of a stuffed four legged Deadly Nadder he used to have. Stoick explains his mother made it for him when he was a baby but it scared it so bad that when he was older and Stoick took him fishing Hiccup tossed it overboard, but overtime it was found and Stoick had it returned home. Hiccup places it over his bed as a reminder that as long as he has it, he'll never forget his mother.

Main article: Bork Week Nadders

In "We Are Family, Part 1", as the village prepares for Bork Week, two Deadly Nadders are seen flying together while carrying a platform decking towards the stands. Meanwhile in the Cove Astrid demonstrates her dragon call as she summons a flock of Nadders she plans to have Stormfly fly with during the Bork Week air show parade. Later Astrid finds Hiccup and is ecstatic to show how she got her Nadder squad flying in a perfect formation although Hiccup's mind was elsewhere as he felt sorry that there were no other Night Furies for Toothless to fly with.

Main article: Flystorm

In "We Are Family, Part 2", when Alvin and Savage escort Hiccup through the prison a Deadly Nadder is seen caged banging on the bars trying to escape. when Hiccup and Mildew escape from the Outcast prison, they enter a field full of wild and aggressive dragons, including Deadly Nadders, and like the other dragons, the Nadders don't take too well to them. However when Mildew accidently wakes one up it roars at them making Mildew scared of it, but Hiccup tosses his staff away to prove they're friendly and manages to train it naming it Flystorm, despite Flystorm being okay around them Mildew was still scared which Hiccup taught him to properly gain its trust. When they mount Flystorm he acts nervous which Hiccup explains that dragons who have never been ridden can be nervous so to sooth him they spit and rub his hide which as Mildew spits a lot and rubs hard it really makes Flystorm feel better. Flystorm takes them to where Toothless was supposed to be held captive but Alvin was there and unleashes a Whispering Death, a Scauldron and a Changewing on them however Flystorm was able to out manoeuvrer them casing the three dragons to crash into eachother allowing him to get Hiccup and Mildew out to escape through the Whispering Death hole and out towards the top of the island and land on the other side. When reuniting with the Dragon Riders Hiccup and Mildew had Flystorm help them find Toothless but as Hiccup and Toothless were captured by the Outcasts, Flystorm took off with the dragons to regroup in a formation to attack the Outcasts and rescue the duo. As they all escaped Gobber and Mildew mounted Flystorm to escape but Mildew fell off grabbing onto the Nadder's tail but unfortunately lost his grip and was captured, although it turns out everything Hiccup taught Mildew was part of a plan for Alvin to learn how to finally control dragons.

Dragons: Defenders of Berk

In "The Night and the Fury", during Astrid's idea of a training exercise, where everyone spends the night on Dragon Island without their dragons, Astrid met a wild Nadder and though it attempted to attack her she skilfully stayed in its blind spot and evaded its attack which the Nadder left as it knew it couldn't beat her.

In "Appetite for Destruction", during a dragon migration survey Hiccup and Astrid have a friendly competition on who can paint tag the most Nadders which Hiccup wins, the yellow paint meant that the Nadders were from Sorrow Island. Although later many wild dragons including Nadders from different islands began fleeing from their homes migrating towards Dragon Island meaning their islands were gone. They later find out that the Screaming Death had returned and was the one responsible for the islands disappearance, so when it arrived at Dragon Island and the riders began fighting it Astrid lead a pack of territorial Nadders to fight it so combined with the Dragon Riders and Fishlegs' Gronckle squadron they managed to drive out the Screaming Death away. With the threat gone the Nadders and other dragons made Dragon Island their home.

In "The Flight Stuff", when Gustav goes looking for a dragon to train to prove he can be a Dragon Rider he finds a Deadly Nadder and observes from under a log, but he rejects it as it was too spikey which he runs away as it shoots its spines at him.

In "Frozen", when Fishlegs explains how Speed Stingers attacked the village and froze nearly everyone, a Deadly Nadder tried hiding in a shed but was cornered and paralyzed by the Lead Stinger and three of its scouts.

In "Bing! Bam! Boom!", when Bing, Bam and Boom are being attacked by wild dragons on Dragon Island, which many of them were Nadders. One approached them which Boom tried sonic blasting it away although he wasn't strong enough making them run away from it, soon another one appeared but was chased off by Fishlegs and Meatlug. However, as more dragons showed up, including more Nadders, the four Thunderdrums combined their sonic attacks to blast them all away.

Dragons: Race to the Edge

Season 1

In "Dragon Eye of the Beholder, Part 1", as Hiccup and Toothless fly over Berk they pass the feeding station where a Nadder rises up from out the large cauldron of fish and is happily enjoying its meal. Later when searching through the Reaper Hiccup and Toothless find bones of dragons which a few were Deadly Nadder skulls.

Main article: Ambered Nadder

In "Imperfect Harmony", when the dragons go missing and the riders find an enormous mound pile of dragon bones, skulls of Nadders were a part of the pile. Once they do find the dragons who are trapped in Death Song amber cocoons there are also other dragons including Nadders who are trapped, when the riders try breaking they're dragons out Hiccup and Toothless try freeing one of the trapped Nadders but failed to do so. Although it is presumed that the gang freed it along with their own dragons and the other victims.

In "Gone Gustav Gone", when Dagur raises the Reaper plundering it of all its goods, a Nadder skull they collected sits on a table with other objects they found.

In "Night of the Hunters, Part 1", when searching the Reaper for clues on where the Dragon Hunters might have taken Stormfly, the room Hiccup and Astrid search has a Nadder skull. In "Night of the Hunters, Part 2", when the Riders were finding out what was going to happen to their dragons they show Stormfly being used to produce Nadder spines to be used for spears and ballistas.

Main article: Scardian

In "Edge of Disaster, Part 1", when Hiccup, Fishlegs and Snotlout go to rescue Trader Johann, they find him and his ship being attacked by a large pack of Gronckles, Nadders, and Nightmares. They were led by a Deadly Nadder covered in battle scars named Scardian, which another Nadder then blasted at the deck of Johann's ship which he tried swatting away with his broom. When rescuing Johann Hiccup lead all the Nadders away although they were very committed in taking him out which Toothless falls back and blasts scarring them off, although when the dragons kidnapped Fishlegs Scardian and the rest of the pack returned to their island. When the others go to rescue Fishlegs, Hiccup and Snotlout are confused by this, considering that even Gronckles, Nadders, and Nightmares aren't usually this aggressive. Within the dragon pack, Scardian was seen sparring with a Gronckle alongside the other dragons, whilst another Nadder was guarding Fishlegs as their prisoner alongside two Nightmares.

In "Edge of Disaster, Part 2", Fishlegs was treated as an outcast among the pack but the dragons including the Nadders although he did find out why they were aggressive as the scars they have were from Dragon Hunters. The Nadders and other dragons then witnessed him save a baby Gronckle from choking they saw he wasn't a threat and respected him with even Scardian vouching for him, but since they didn't trust the others yet the Nadders and dragons attacked them thinking they were out to hurt them and Fishlegs forcing the Riders to retreat. In another attempt to save Fishlegs Hiccup lead Scardian away which the lead Dragon also had another Nadder and a Nightmare follow as backup, but as Hiccup then led him to a single sea stack where he showed them his Flightsuit and revealed that they weren't that different after all making them trust him. The Riders return to the Edge with Scardian leading the Nadders and other dragons back with them as they assisted the riders in taking out the Dragon Hunters driving them all out.

In "A Time to Skrill", as the riders sneak into a Hunter's camp to free the Skrill, they sneak past many cages full of captured dragons, some of which are Nadders.

In "Maces and Talons, Part 1", as the riders are attacking a Hunter's ship, Hiccup and Toothless break into the lower deck of the ship and free the dragons inside, which two of them were Deadly Nadders. Later as Ryker, Dagur and Heather arrive at Viggo's tent which was made up of dragonhide, it seemed to be partly made up of a Deadly Nadder's hide which there was also a Nadder's skull within the tent too.

In "Maces and Talons, Part 2", when Hiccup sneaks into the Hunter's base through all the dragon cages, a couple of them contain Deadly Nadders which one of them tries shooting it spines at Hiccup but narrowly misses, and a couple more are heard growling.

Season 3

In "To Heather or Not to Heather", when thinking about whether Heather should be a Dragon Rider Fishlegs states she and Windshear could be a huge help especially since the Nadder Migration happens soon. Later while having dinner Hiccup alerts the group of the migration as a huge flock of Deadly Nadders flew by which they explain to Heather that the migration takes them through the worst of Dragon Hunter territory so the Riders divert them on a safer path, which is longer but keeps them safe. When they go to diver the Nadders Astrid flies ahead as they're more likely to follow Stormfly while the rest of the riders keep them herded to prevent any stragglers breaking off from the flock, during the mission Windshear acts out making her and Heather fall back which Hiccup orders everyone to deal with the Nadders first which he has the Twins have Barf and Belch create a wall of fire to divert the Nadders back on course. Later the Riders divert more Nadders down the safer route although the Dragon Hunters catch onto what the Riders are doing as a fleet arrives, although they fight them off freeing the captured Nadders thus making sure the migration is safe.

Main article: Steeltrap

In "Stryke Out", a gladiator Nadder, known as Steeltrap, is shown in a Dragon Fighting Arena in a match against a Nightmare called Whip-Slash when Ryker visited the Fight Master, but the crowd wasn't thrilled about this, as the fight ended in around five minutes. When Hiccup got captured, he managed to train Steeltrap by finding his blind spot and scratching under his chin. When he gained Steeltrap and the other dragon's trust, he and Whip-Slash tried to melt the manacle clamped tight from a Fighter Razorwhip's tail but failed. But Steeltrap was later freed when the Dragon Riders came and destroyed the arena, and he and the other dragons thought off the hunters and flew free to an unknown location.

In "Between a Rock and a Hard Place", when the riders attack a Hunter's ship, but only find marble blocks on it, they then see a humongous flock of dragons flying away in a hurry, which some of them were Nadders. As the riders fly through the dragon stampede Heather narrowly avoids one of the fleeing Nadders which Hiccup and Fishlegs are also nearly hit by one too, although the same can't be said for the Twins as one Nadder bumps into Barf and Belch hurting their right wing making them plummet into the island.

In "Last Auction Heroes", Viggo captured many Deadly Nadders for his Dragon Auction which one was sold to one of two Vikings both with no teeth. Fortunately, the riders were able to infiltrate into the auction and free all the caged dragons, including the Nadders.

In "Defenders of the Wing, Part 1", as the Dragon Riders raid a Dragon Hunter fleet Hiccup and Toothless find a Nadder in a cage and blast it open to free it

Season 5

In "Living on the Edge", as the volcano begins shooting out lava out the ground which two Nadders look at a geyser only to spooked as it shoots lava out. Later, Krogan and the Dragon Hunters use Garff's adoptive father to lure and capture dragons, which they manage to trap a couple of Deadly Nadders in amber which as two Hunters load one onto a cart they talk about how they miss the days of actually hunting them which resulted in one of them getting killed by Krogan. While inspecting the ambered dragons Krogan rejects a Nadder as it wasn't exactly what he needed until he saw a Singetail.

In "A Matter of Perspective", when the riders try to find a way to sneak off Vanaheim without the Sentinels knowing, the Twins discover a tomb of bones and start playing with them although Fishlegs orders them to stop which he also identified the tomb belongs to the Deadly Nadder species as Nadder spines are covered all around it. The Twins don't listen which Ruffnut wears a Nadder skull until Fishlegs forcibly carries them out, although the Twins do document the tomb for their travel guide.

In "No Dragon Left Behind", when rescuing Hiccup, Snotlout and Garff from a cave of Slitherwings, Astrid and Stormfly arrive and drive away the Slitherwings with a new ability where a Deadly Nadder is able to hold in its magnesium blast but releasing it creating a huge flame of sparks that spray everywhere which allows them to escape.

Season 6

In "No Bark, All Bite", Stoick ordered all of Johann's trades to be destroyed, including the willow bark for medicine. When the new traders didn't possess the bark either, Hiccup and Stoick travelled to a few islands to procure it themselves, in which they were met with a swarm of scared dragons, including Nadders, who were running away from their island being set on fire. Later, after Krogan and the Dragon Hunters invaded and took over Berk, while Stoick was distracting Krogan, Hiccup freed all the captured dragons and led them, including many Nadders, to attack the Hunters and Flyers, driving them all out.

In "Triple Cross", the Twins were trying to set a record for Barf and Belch after they state that the other dragons already had talents and make them known, such as Stormfly being considered the fastest Deadly Nadder only when eating chicken which apparently technically counts.

In "Darkest Night", in Fishlegs' what if scenario of if they never left for the Edge where Berk is peaceful and serene, a Deadly Nadder is shown standing in the Academy while another one flies over it.

In "King of Dragons, Part 2", many Deadly Nadders were summoned by the Berserker Bewilderbeast during the final battle against the Dragon Hunters and Dragon Flyers, which one Nadder grabbed a Flyer straight off a Singetail's back.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Many Deadly Nadders were now living on Berk with the other dragons amongst the Vikings, as plenty were seen watching the races, living in the stables or eating at the feeding station. When Stoick learned that Drago Bludvist was on the move and began locking down the island, Nadders were seen being moved into their pens in the stables. Later on, some Nadders were seen in Valka's sanctuary amongst the flock of her Bewilderbeast, which later as Hiccup was flying with Valka she began showing him a trick of walking on dragons' backs while gliding which she walked across a Nadder's back. Many other Nadders were present during Drago's attack as they and the flock defended the sanctuary. During the battle one Nadder was caught in an iron trap trying to rescue a tied up Gronckle but it was saved with the other dragons by the riders. Although as Drago's Bewilderbeast emerged victorious, every dragon, including the Nadders, fell under its control, and soon all the Nadders from Berk succumbed to the same fate. But as Toothless became the new alpha, every Nadder and other dragon followed his order and attacked Drago's Bewilderbeast, driving them out, and the dragons with riders or masters returned to them.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Throughout the film, many Deadly Nadders were seen living on Berk amongst all the other dragons and when moving to New Berk with them whilst carrying cargo and ships. The Warlords had also procured a couple of Nadders at their base but had trouble training or even wrangling them until Grimmel the Grisly arrived. Many wild Deadly Nadders were among the myriad of dragons in the Hidden World who bowed down in front of Toothless and the Unnamed Light Fury, showing respect for their alpha. After Grimmel the Grisly captured Toothless, all the Deadly Nadders from Berk, along with the other dragons, came to their alpha's help. However, Toothless ordered them to stop when Grimmel threatened to kill the Light Fury, so the Nadders and the other dragons reluctantly allowed Grimmel and his Warlords to capture them. Fortunately, the Dragon Riders began an attack on Grimmel's ships and freed the Deadly Nadders, along with the other dragons, which returned to New Berk. When the battle ended, Hiccup realized that the only way the dragons can be safe from humans was for them to go to the Hidden World. After Toothless gave the command to the dragons of Berk, all of them, including the Deadly Nadders, said their farewells to the Vikings and flew off to the Hidden World.

How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming

As Hiccup tells Nuffink about the traditions they do on Snoggletog, Nuffink is seen sitting next to a toy Nadder on the floor of the Haddock House. The Deadly Nadder is also pictured in a Dragon Manual formerly belonging to Stoick that Zephyr Haddock finds packed away in the Haddock House on New Berk.

Season 6

In "Dragons Everywhere!", when Tom and Thunder investigate why the dragons are coming to the surface, they're suddenly ambushed by an angry Deadly Nadder. When they escaped from it, Tom and Thunder noticed it attacking some Terrible Terrors, assuming that Buzzsaw tried to capture it earlier, making it very hostile and aggressive. Tom then attempts to train and befriend it so it will calm down, but fails to do it when two more Nadders arrive, and all three Nadders go after them. When Tom and Thunder manage to find safety under some boulders, Tom noticed that Thunder got hit with a Nadder spine, but was able to remove it; and then the two try to make their escape. However, the pack of Deadly Nadders find them, leaving Tom cornered by one of them, and Thunder dealing with two. But when one of the Nadders is about to kill Tom, Thunder becomes enraged and unleashes his "Full-Alpha" ability, asserting dominance over the Nadders, which made them back off in fear, and then sends them away. Just as Tom and Thunder are about to leave, they noticed that the Nadders' nest, which consisted of Dragonsite, had been raided, and Tom assumes that this was Buzzsaw. However, it was later revealed that it was actually Sledkin and Linda who raided the nest.

In "Undercover", when trying to find evidence to prove to Jun that Sledkin is up to no good, Tom, Eugene, and Alex sneak into Sledkin's office to find evidence, in which Alex discovers an email that Sledkin sent to Linda, showing that she and Linda were the ones responsible for aggravating the Nadders. Eugene then makes the attempt to take the picture of the email, but he fumbles it up, and ends up taking a selfie of himself getting blinded by the camera's flash.

Season 8

In "How to Train Jörmungandr", when learning Jörmungandr was in the Nature Realm, Tom and Thunder rush to the Realm to rescue and evacuate the dragons in the area, in which the Deadly Nadder trio were also evacuated to safety.

In "Science vs. Nature", while the riders were looking for a place to hide the dragons from Jörmungandr, he badly burned and poisoned the area, causing the trees and plants to die. So, when they were looking for any dragons that needed their help, Tom finds one of the Nadders badly poisoned. While D'Angelo tries helping it, Tom notices that the other Nadders weren't around, fearing that they might've been killed or eaten by the World Serpent. After doing a quickly analysis, D'Angelo orders the others to get it back to the Dragon Hospital to save its life. Later, when they bring it back, D'Angelo has it attached to a heart monitor, showing that it was just barely alive. He then tells everyone that it needs rest and it'll soon get better.

Games

How to Train Your Dragon Game

In the game adaption of the movie, How to Train Your Dragon, Deadly Nadders are experts in strength, which allows them to dish out some of the most devastating attacks. They have the longest melee range, making them hard to reach, and also possess high agility and speed to sustain speedy flight. However, their low stamina, power, and fire leave much to be desired and the Nadder is therefore not recommended for beginners or for obstacle courses. Players will start out with a Deadly Nadder if they choose Astrid as their main character.

DreamWorks Dragons: Wild Skies

In Dragons: Wild Skies, the Deadly Nadder can be tamed. It lives in Unlandable Cove, and one must feed it mutton in order to tame it. To get mutton, you will need 3 Gold to buy a knife, then go to Berk Village, where you then chop pieces of mutton. The Deadly Nadder is a Sharp Class dragon. When the player rides it, the dragon's mouth is closed. When the player presses the space bar, it will open its mouth and blow fire at the target.

Dragons Hero Portal

Stormfly appears in this game that the player — playing as part of one of the rider/dragon pairs — can choose to play as.

In the game School of Dragons, a Deadly Nadder is trainable. The Deadly Nadder is trained by many players in the game. Like all the dragons in the game, they have four stages of growth. A Titan Wing form became available later in the game.

A fossilized skeleton appears on Auction Island, for sale by the local merchants.

Dragons: Titan Uprising

Trivia

  • The official measurements of the Deadly Nadder, as released by DreamWorks Animation are "30 feet (9.14 meters) in length", and "42 feet (12.8 meters) in wingspan".
  • Deadly Nadder hatchlings differ in appearance throughout the franchise. Like in most other dragons, the young have really short wings compared to body size in School of Dragons and a somewhat larger wing-to-body ratio in Dragons: Rise of Berk.
    • The ones depicted in Gift of the Night Fury look like smaller versions of the parents, but possess a larger head and slightly bigger eyes.
    • The ones depicted in promotional TV spots for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World possess a kangaroo-like posture, a spikeless tail, and a smooth body with the exception of a frill consisting of a small number of blunt spikes and a few running down the back. The head is flatter and the eyes are enormous; the mouth lacks any teeth and the tail is short and stubby.
    • It is possible that the smaller baby Nadders are hatchlings (Tiny Tooths), while the larger and more developed ones are juveniles (Short Wings).
  • A Deadly Nadder made a brief cameo in the DreamWorks short Almost Home, though it was just its foot. It is shown swooping down and carrying away one of Captain Smek's assistants while they scout for a suitable home planet.
  • Deadly Nadders, particularly Stormfly, were purposely made to fly much faster than their average speed in Dragons: Riders of Berk and Dragons: Defenders of Berk. This was shown multiple times, such as when Stormfly easily catches up with the Screaming Death while it was chasing Hiccup, and when Stormfly flew faster than Toothless to catch up with the Skrill.
  • Deadly Nadders are shown to be facultative carnivorous (can eat both meat and plants, but prefers meat) in the episodes "How to Start a Dragon Academy" and "Crushing It" and in the Book of Dragons short, where they are seen eating fern-like plants.
    • Stormfly is also shown to like eating chicken, though she prefers only cooked chicken and does not bother live ones (like Tuffnut's pet).
  • The meaning of "Nadder" is actually snake in Middle English.
  • Deadly Nadders made an appearance in the trailer for Minecraft's How to Train Your Dragon DLC, and have been put into the DLC as a blocky, tamable, ridable dragon.
  • The Deadly Nadder's body design is somewhat similar to the Hungarian Horntail from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
