Gobber: "Sorry we're late for the party!"
Chaghatai: "You're right on time."[src]

Chaghatai Khan is a Warlord who hired Grimmel the Grisly to kill Hiccup and capture Toothless in order to continue their dragon poaching operations to be able to conquer the world.

Biography[]

Hunt for Toothless[]

After Hiccup and the Dragon Riders freed another batch of captured dragons, Chaghatai, Ragnar the Rock, and Griselda the Grevious decided to hire Grimmel the Grisly to hunt Toothless, the last Night Fury known in existence. They also offered him a female Light Fury to use as a bait for Toothless.

The three Warlords and Grimmel then traveled to Berk, but found the island empty. The latter discovered the route the Berkians have taken and the four hunters sailed after them.

Soon after Grimmel's tower was attacked by the Dragon Riders, Chaghatai, Ragnar, Griselda, and Grimmel planned their next move. They were continuously disrupted by Ruffnut Thorston, so they decided to release her and follow her to New Berk. There, Grimmel managed to capture both Toothless and the Light Fury and brought them back to the Warlords.

However, the Dragon Riders came to rescue their dragons, and began fighting the Warlords and the other Trappers. Later during the battle, Gobber the Belch, Valka, and Eret were brought by their dragons and were directly confronted by the Warlords. Gobber apologized for being late, but Chaghatai tells them that they were on time.

When Astrid Hofferson made two ships collide, Chaghatai and Griselda fell into a cage, which closed and locked by itself. It is unknown if Chaghatai and Griselda drowned when the ship sank.

Physical Appearance[]

Chaghatai Khan's appearance is in between that of Ragnar the Rock and Griselda the Grevious; he is leaner than Ragnar, but broader than Griselda. He has black hair and beard, as well as amber eyes, and sports a brass armor over his red tunic and brown boots.

Personality[]

Like his appearance, Chaghatai Khan's personality lies somewhere between that of Ragnar and Griselda. He is more serious and competent than Ragnar, but less aggressive and stubborn than Griselda. Like Griselda, he doesn’t tolerate Ragnar’s playfulness but is far less aggressive when reprimanding him. While he is not as quick to confrontation as Griselda, he is still standoffish towards those he dislikes and will mock them for their failures instead of physically assaulting them. He also seems to be the most patient of the warlords, as while he was clearly displeased with Grimmel’s slow progress in capturing Toothless, he voiced the least amount of frustration. Like Drago and the other Warlords, Khan only sees dragons as war machines to be exploited for power and wealth.

Abilities, Skills, and Talents[]

Dragon Hunting: It is assumed that Chaghatai is an expert dragon poacher since his rank is among the Warlords, the best Dragon Trappers.

Fighting: Chaghatai is a very skilled fighter, for he is able to hold his own against powerful opponents such as Gobber the Belch, Eret, and Valka.

Relationships[]

Ragnar the Rock[]

Along with Griselda, Ragnar is a fellow Warlord who serves alongside Chaghatai as a leader of the Northern Alliance. While they don’t appear to be friends, Chaghatai seems to have a much better relationship with Ragnar than Griselda does. He doesn’t tolerate and often reprimands Ragnar’s childlike playfulness, but he isn’t as condescending towards him as Griselda usually is; his tonw more stern rather than wrathful. He also showed signs of concern for Ragnar when he was pinned to the ground by one of Grimmel’s Deathgrippers, though he made no effort to help his partner. Despite his disapproval of Ragnar’s childlike habits, Chaghatai and Ragnar do seem to work well together in leading the Alliance.

Griselda the Grevious[]

Chaghatai works alongside Griselda and Ragnar the Rock in leading the Northern Alliance following Drago’s defeat. Despite Griselda being the most impatient and short tempered of the Warlords, she and Chaghatai seem to share a somewhat healthy relationship. When Griselda attempted to threaten Grimmel with her sword for his arrogant tone, she only stopped at Chaghatai’s insistence. This indicates that Griselda has a manner of respect for Chaghatai, being the only one able to keep her anger in check. During the battle with the Dragon Riders, both Chaghatai and Griselda fought alongside one another, but were eventually locked in a dragon’s cage together due to the efforts of Astrid Hofferson.

Drago Bludvist[]

Chaghatai was once one of Drago’s generals in the Northern Alliance prior to the his defeat. After this, Chaghatai and the other Warlords continue to poach and capture dragons to build a dragon army to conquer the world, hoping to finish where their former master left off.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

While it is unknown if Hiccup is aware of Chaghatai personally, the young chief of Berk had constantly been in the way of Chaghatai and the other Warlords’ world dominating attempts. In the following year, Hiccup led the Dragon Riders on multiple raids on the Northern Alliance’s ships, freeing the dragons they had captured and hindering their progress. Because of this, Chaghatai sees Hiccup as a major threat to the Warlords’ plans and thus hired Grimmel the Grisly to deliver his Night Fury Toothless, the Alpha of Berk’s dragons, to them. During the final battle with the Northern Alliance, Hiccup’s rescue of Toothless ultimately resulted in the Allaince’s recently captured dragons repelling against the Walords, which led to Chaghatai’s defeat.

Grimmel the Grisly[]

Grimmel: "That idiot boy has done all of the work for you, gathering the dragons in one place. Why bother me?"
Chaghatai: "Because the flock is protected by a Night Fury."
Grimmel: "...Not possible."
Chaghatai: "Well, it seems one slipped through your fingers."[src]
  — Chaghatai attempting to irritate Grimmel

Much like Griselda, Chaghatai was at first reluctant to hire Grimmel to capture Berk’s Alpha dragon, Toothless. Chaghatai is shown to be rather reserved and standoffish when around Grimmel, but he doesn't fear him, despite his reputation or his Deathgrippers. During their meeting, Chaghatai at one point scornfully pointed out how Toothless slipped through Grimmel’s fingers, in an attempt to mock the dragon hunter for his arrogancy. Had it not been for Ragnar’s intervention, it is possibile Chaghatai and Grimmel’s stand-off would have turned physical. Despite this, Chaghatai still accepted the hunter’s services, as he in turn accepted their offer, and was visibly impressed when he took down a raging Rumblehorn with just a single arrow. During the hunt for Toothless, however, Chaghatai and the other Warlords grew impatient with Grimmel’s slow progress in capturing the Night Fury, with Grimmel being annoyed by their short-sightedness. After Grimmel captured Toothless and delivered Berk’s dragons to the Warlords’ fleet, the dragon hunter betrayed them, seeking to kill Toothless, thus end the Night Furies’ existence for good. Though angered at Grimmel’s betrayal, Chaghatai could do nothing but watch as Grimmel foiled his plans.
