Official Description[]
“ | The Cavern Crasher flings flammable mucus and scurries across underground catacombs in search of its favorite food: Firecomb! Single-minded and voracious, the Cavern Crasher may lack wings, but its body has adapted to survive beneath the earth. With its reinforced beak and claws, this dragon climbs rock walls and hangs upside-down from stalactites. But the Cavern Crasher's most dangerous feature, by far, is its ability to excrete and eject slick mucus from the bulbous ducts on its back and then set it ablaze! |

Physical Appearance[]
Egg[]
Cavern Crasher eggs look like rocks, though they taper towards the top. They are red with black stripes and are covered in mucus, possibly by their parents as a form of protection. The egg is luminous green in School of Dragons with the signature mountain-like taper on the top.
Hatchling to Adult[]
The Cavern Crasher is a black, wingless dragon resembling a cross between a large salamander, a Gila monster, and a shell-less turtle. It has yellow stripes that swathe across its eyes and similar bands around its limbs. It also has a hooked, beak-like mandible on its upper jaw, prominent tusks on its lower jaw, and a thick, rounded flat tail. In addition, it has multiple bumps and craters on its back that secrete slime. Its glistening hide has an overall "slimy" appearance.
Titan Wing[]
Titan Wing Cavern Crashers in Rise of Berk look similar to their younger counterparts, but have glowing crystal-like spikes on their backs. The yellow stripes are replaced with luminous light blue, lilac and teal hints.
Abilities[]
Firepower[]
The Cavern Crasher produces green flames, which it mainly uses to set fire to targets covered in its own flammable mucus. The Cavern Crasher is also able to set its own tongue on fire.
Flammable Mucus[]
The Cavern Crasher is able to secrete flammable mucus from glands on its upper body. It launches this substance from its back and tail, flinging it onto other objects before igniting it with flames. The mucus shares similar properties to Monstrous Nightmare gel, due to its flammability. The mucus is also malodorous, especially to most humans, as seen with Slimeball.
Collapsible Skeleton[]
“ | No stranger to tight spaces, the Cavern Crasher can flatten and squeeze its accordion-like body to sneak through cracks and past its enemies. | ” |
— Dragonpedia |
With a collapsible skeletal structure, the Cavern Crasher is able to navigate and squeeze through the tightest of wall crevasses and cracks. When the Cavern Crasher squeezes through the tightest of walls, their mucus squeezes out, which may aid in lubrication. This also makes the Cavern Crashers one of the most flexible species of dragons.
Wall Scaling[]
The Cavern Crasher can scale cavern walls and ceilings like a gecko very quickly, despite its larger size.
Endurance and Stamina[]
The Cavern Crasher's endurance is shown when its body is able to take many attacks simultaneously from multiple dragons, even without its protective mucus. It even came out unscathed from having multiple large rocks fall on it, as a result of Hookfang firing at the cavern ceiling above. It was also able to survive the doubled firepower of Hookfang and the Fireworm Queen, after combining their flames at a short range.
Despite its large size, the Cavern Crasher shows no lack of stamina, as it fought against the Fireworm Queen for some time and won the fight even though it wasn't a fight the Fireworm Queen was willing to lose because it was protecting its eggs. Its high stamina also allows it to effectively search for its favorite prey, the Firecomb, while also fighting against other dragons. The only reason the Cavern Crasher eventually gave up the fight with the Dragon Riders and the Fireworm Queen is that its mucus was cooked off by the combined flames of Hookfang and the Fireworm Queen, and it found itself lacking the offensive capability to continue the pursuit.
Also, the Cavern Crasher's mucus seems to act like an extra coat of armor, protecting its already durable body, and making it resistant to the fire of other dragons.
Speed, Agility, and Stealth[]
Despite their large size, the Cavern Crasher has proven to be a very fast dragon, as it was able to climb walls fast enough to make Astrid believe that there was more than one in the dark caves. It is also shown to be agile enough to maneuver around its surroundings.
Since it's a very fast crawler, the Cavern Crasher has great stealth on its side to hunt its prey easily in dark caves. Its speed allows it to easily get behind targets and sneak up on them.
Strength and Combat[]
The great strength of the Cavern Crasher is proven when, despite its size, it is able to take on a Fireworm Queen, forcing her to retreat. The Firecomb Crasher was also able to take on a Night Fury, a Deadly Nadder, a Gronckle, and a Hideous Zippleback while inside a small cave, despite being outnumbered.
Burrowing[]
The Cavern Crasher has been shown to be a very fast digger, as they are able to appear out of the ground at high speed, and are strong enough to burrow through rocky walls.
Senses[]
The Cavern Crasher is shown to have an acute sense of hearing, as it was able to hear baby Fireworms screaming. The Cavern Crasher also uses its forked tongue to help smell the baby Fireworms. As stated in Slimeslinger's description, despite being blind, this Cavern Crasher can still use its senses to help it navigate its surroundings, though it did unintentionally wreak havoc around Berk.
Swimming[]
It is implied that the Cavern Crasher can swim since Fireworm Island is surrounded by the sea. Since the Dragon Riders got to the island by air, this dragon would have needed to swim to the island due to it being a flightless species. Because of their incredible stamina, Cavern Crashers can swim for long periods of time.
Fireworm Venom Immunity[]
Since a Cavern Crasher held up so long against the Fireworm Queen, it is possible that the Cavern Crasher is immune to the venom of the Fireworm Queen. Even with all of its mucus evaporated it can still tolerate the fire attacks of the Fireworm Queen.
Intelligence[]
The Cavern Crasher demonstrated its intelligence by coating the Dragon Riders with flammable mucus to keep them cautious, and then leaving behind a trail of said mucus to set it ablaze and prevent them from following. It also managed to use its surroundings of the small cave as a weakness against the riders.
Weaknesses[]
Evaporable Mucus[]
The Cavern Crasher's defenses can be overwhelmed by blasts of fire that are large or powerful enough to cook its mucus away, leaving it vulnerable. Their mucus is also connected to their firepower, which made the Firecomb Crasher lose his offense ability, forcing him to give up the pursuit. Although he did manage to fire one blast before being overwhelmed.
Food Motivation[]
As shown in "Family Matters", Cavern Crashers can be lured with food to go to other places. The Firecomb Crasher was drawn by Fishlegs and Meatlug by using a Singetail egg to use him against the Dragon Hunters.
Behavior and Personality[]
Described to be cruel and cunning, the Cavern Crasher raids other dragons' nests mercilessly, consuming their offspring and eggs. This dragon is exceptionally smart and deceiving, outsmarting several of its opponents, and is more than relentless in getting its meal. It also pushes other dragons out of their nests to gain a place to live temporarily. However, it is unknown if their behavior is influenced by gender. As seen in "Sledkin Stakeout", females may display a softer side towards humans in certain cases, like when they're injured. If a human proves that they're not a threat, they will calm down and let themselves be approached so they can be helped. They are also willing to repay the kindness that was shown by the same human if said person was in danger. They will even accept a hug if they and that person fully trust each other or once the debt is repaid.
Training[]
As shown by Slimeball, Cavern Crashers can be trained, though it is unknown how Eret managed to do so. In "Family Matters", Fishlegs managed to lure the Firecomb Crasher by using a Singetail egg to aid him against the Dragon Hunters, although he admitted that he didn't think too far ahead in his plan. In "Sledkin Stakeout", D'Angelo tamed one by gently approaching her after seeing that she needed help. One can earn a Cavern Crasher's trust by slowly approaching them while allowing yourself to be seen to prove that you're not trying to sneak up on them. They can be trained if they are moved by a human's compassion, and they will repay the favor by saving the one or ones who helped them.

Main article: Firecomb Crasher |
In "Crash Course", a Cavern Crasher raided a Fireworm nest for its eggs. The Fireworm Queen sought help from the gang and when they arrived, they attempted to catch it with bolas. The dragon quickly retaliates by spraying mucus on them and setting it on fire. While Snotlout and the Queen split from the herd to save the baby Fireworms, the rest of the gang fight the Cavern Crasher. The Cavern Crasher safely eludes them all with its skills and makes it to the hive. There, the Hookfang and the Fireworm Queen combine their firepower and cook off the Cavern Crasher's mucus coating, and it is forced to flee.

When he gently touched her leg, she was so moved by his compassion that she calmed down and allowed D'Angelo to treat her wounds. She later repaid the favor when she found him and the riders trapped by a cave-in, which almost caused them to suffer from lack of oxygen. She broke through the rocks, thus giving them a way out, and D'Angelo gave her a "thank you" hug.

Trivia[]
- The official measurements given by DreamWorks Animation do not appear to be realistic when considering the relative sizes the viewer sees within the Franchise. Based on the model sheet for the Cavern Crasher alongside other known dragons in the series, such as the Toothless, this dragon should be "33 feet 9 inches (10.3 meters) long".
- The Cavern Crasher's ability to squeeze its body through tight spaces is similar to that of the Riproarer and the Raptortongue from the books. It might also be inspired by the myths of rats and mice possessing collapsible skeletons.
- The Cavern Crasher appears to be heavily inspired by fire salamanders or tiger salamanders. Fire salamanders are amphibians with yellow and black markings similar to the dragon. The Cavern Crasher's ability to produce flammable mucus may be based on the myth that the coat of mucus on the body of fire salamanders protected them from being harmed by fire.
- The knobby bumps on the Cavern Crasher's back that ooze flammable mucus are reminiscent of poison glands found on the skin of many amphibians, as well as the egg pouches of Surinam toads.
- The Cavern Crasher also greatly resembles the Pocket Salamander from The Elder Scrolls.
- The Cavern Crasher's ability to fling flammable mucus may have been influenced by the spiny-tailed geckos' ability to squirt noxious fluid from their tails, and this fluid can become very flammable when mixed with ammonia.
- The Cavern Crasher's behavior and abilities could also be inspired by that of the Devil's coach horse beetle, as both species can excrete fluids from certain parts of their bodies, and are both known to raid nests of other animals.
- A Cavern Crasher card appeared beside the board game Maces and Talons in Season 2 of Trollhunters.
