Carrots are vegetables briefly mentioned in the How to Train Your Dragon Book series.
Description[]
The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) is a root vegetable derived from the Wild carrot and is considered its subspecies. Despite being a subspecies, a large number of cultivars have been bred, and the large taproot of the carrot can be colored the typical orange, but also purple, black, red, white, and yellow are seen. The taproot can be long or short, thick or narrow, depending on the cultivar.
Function[]
In the Book series and in real life, carrot taproots are seen as a nutritious food source for humans, as well as dragons in the Books. Additionally, carrots were initially cultivated in Persian history for their leaves and seeds, which are aromatic and edible. In modern times, the leaves and seeds are often overlooked and the taproot is the main portion eaten.
Appearances[]
How to Train Your Dragon[]
Carrots are mentioned as part of Horrorcow's diet, as she is partial to them. However, it is mentioned in a condescending manner by Snotlout:
“ | I hear that Horrorcow is partial to carrots. ... Has the Toothless Wonder gotten up the nerve to attack a vegetable? Carrots are a bit crunchy but perhaps he could manage the odd squished cucumber. ... You could give it to him though a straw perhaps. ... | ” |

How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse[]
Carrot's are mentioned in the in-universe text, Old Wrinkly's Cures for Common Illnesses. Stuffing carrots up your nose is said to help stop a cold-induced runny nose.
Carrots are mentioned again as one of the many food items at the Freya'sday Eve feast in the Hysteric Great Hall. Hiccup uses the food to fend off his attackers, "knocking out a Hysteric with a leg of roasted buffalo, shoving a carrot up the nose of another, and spraying three more with Homeade Nettle Champagne."
