Abilities[]

Abilities of the Egg and Hatchling[]

GTV-94-Boomback Egg

When close to hatching, Boomback eggs will emit internally generated heat so hot most animals have difficulty touching it. It continues to heat up to the point where even a Fire-type dragon or Stoker class dragon has difficulty handling the egg. Further, the egg begins to emit steam just prior to hatching which propels the egg haphazardly around its environment. The hatchling will explode forth from the egg into the air, at which time the baby dragon will learn to fly just before hitting the ground.

The high heat, steam, and rapid learning of flight are mechanisms to protect the egg and then the hatchling from predation.

Weaknesses[]

Egg Predation[]

GTV-29-Eel around the egg

While the eggs of many dragon species can be preyed upon, Boomback eggs appear to be especially vulnerable, to the point that the species has evolved some defense mechanisms for the egg and new hatchling. Eels are seen attempting to eat a Boomback egg, and they may even be accidentally swallowed by large dragons such as the Sea Gronckle.

Behavior and Personality[]

As young hatchlings, Boomback dragons are affectionate and friendly. They quickly learn how to fly at hatch by exploding out of their eggs into the air, then flying before they hit the ground again. Boomback eggs are laid in pairs. It is unclear why eggs are laid in pairs or if this species protects and nurtures eggs and hatchlings.

The Boomback is introduced in the episode "Gludge-Tastic Voyage", in which the Rescue Riders find an unattended egg about to be eaten by eels. The Riders rescue the egg and take it back to The Roost. At first the Riders are unsure of what species the egg belongs to, but Leyla eventually identifies it as the egg of a Boomback. She also notes that Boomback eggs occur in pairs. The Riders also realize that the Sea Gronckle, Gludge, has been having some sort of indigestion, and had been swimming near the location of the rescued egg. The Riders deduce that Gludge probably accidentally ate the other Boomback egg of the pair.

Leyla and Aggro end up on a quest inside the digestive tract of Gludge. Along with encountering the Flyhopper, Oscar, Aggro and Leyla find the second Boomback egg. The trio stimulate a 'reverse back burp' inside Gludge, causing him to eject Oscar, Leyla, Aggro, the egg, and other digestive contents from his mouth. The egg, having already heated up rapidly and started to steam, hatched shortly thereafter into a second Boomback baby.

Trivia[]

  • Leyla indicates Boombacks are also 'Fire' dragons like Aggro the Fire Fury. Fire Furies have been identified as Stoker class dragons, suggesting that Boombacks may also be classified as such.
