The Book of Dragons is an ancient book seen in Dragons: The Nine Realms that was written by Chief Hiccup Haddock III to record his findings about dragons and the Hidden World.
History[]
Dragons: The Nine Realms, Season 4[]
In "Uncharted Territory", the book was found locked inside of an ancient Viking capsule, which Tom Kullersen had previously found in the Hidden World. It is found to be filled with information on the various realms in the Hidden World, the dragons that live there, and the original Dragon Riders. It appears to have been created by a Berkian after the dragons and humans separated as a way to remember the dragons.
In "Journey to the Snowcano", Tom gets a look at the original Dragon Riders and questions which one he's related too however everything in the book is written in Nordic runes making it hard to understand. After a battle with some Flame Throwers, Wu and Wei become sick and venture to a large mountain in the Ice Realm where they could get healed and Jun thinks it may have something to do with a myth about a dragon king. The book predicts strong winds, poisonous gas up the mountain and a titan wing Mist Twister that apparently sends dragons to their death by throwing them in the snowcano, however the book was wrong whereas the Mist Twister places Dragons inside a hot springs cavern with healing properties and where other Mist Twisters make their home. Tom decides to change the Mist Twister in the picture to be more friendly looking although does a horrible job at doing so, Jun and D'Angelo also state that they need to translate to better understand it and add on new information since the Realms would've changed since then.
In "The Night Lights, Part 2", when the riders enter the Night Light's cave they find out it originally belonged to Hiccup and Toothless in which they find a mural of them alongside Astrid, Zephyr and Nuffink. Tom then compares the riders in the book to show that he and his mother are distantly descended from Chief Hiccup and Astrid.
Dragons: The Nine Realms, Season 5[]
During the events of "Punishment and Torcher", Tom and Jun were able to learn how to translate the runes in the Book and can now read it. The Book proves instrumental to the Dragon Club in multiple aspects throughout the season; it reveals the specific weaknesses of the Sky Torcher, which allows the Dragon Club to face it better.
In "Barrel of Vine Tails", Tom uses it to find out the Hiccup's name and about an area in the Nature Realm that may contain his resting place. While searching for the resting place they encounter Vine Tails in which Tom uses the book to identify what they are however along with Alex's Tablet they steal the book in order to lure they're dragons over to carnivorous plants so that the plant's vines would grab the dragons and make a bridge for them in which they give back the book and tablet as an exchange for the riders service. Tom then offers the book and tablet back to the Vine Tails for their help to free the dragons, after doing so the riders drop large rocks to make a bridge for the Vine Tails in which they give back their stuff. Tom then finds out that the resting place shown in the book is actually a throne in the Vine Tails' tree where Hiccup came to relax and even carved his last name into the tree in which Tom finds out it's haddock but thinks he's referring to a fish. After showing Olivia the book and telling her about the name haddock she reveals that their family's original last name was Haddock revealing that Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was both the author of the book and their ancestor and left the Viking artifacts uncovered in the Hidden World to begin with.
In "Scent of a Dragon", Tom used the book to identify the Snifflehide, and after Eugene gets taken by one Tom looks at the book to see that the Snifflehide is both blind and a vegetarian.
In "Sting It On!", after being attacked by Speed Stingers Tom looks them up in the book and finds out that they're venom can embolize people and dragons.
in "Deep Freeze", while the riders were waiting out the blizzard in Tom's dome to pass the time Tom makes some edits in the book.
Dragons: The Nine Realms, Season 6[]
In "Dragons Everywhere!", while Tom explains his problems to Olivia he holds up the Book of Dragons to reference Hiccup and then puts it in his bag and takes it into his room, he takes it out again and looks at the page of the Original Dragon Riders and wonders how Hiccup got to be so great and when Jun comes by to talk to him he finds him asleep on the book. Later when dealing with an angry Deadly Nadders Tom tries consulting the book for answers however he realises that the other Riders have it instead so he can't rely on it. Back in Rakke Town Jun has an idea about how to get rid of the little dragons in which she remembers a certain page in the book and shows everyone that it states that Dragons are afraid of eels and thinks it can help contain and scare off the Dragons, when Feathers and Wu and Wei see the picture of an eel they get terrified of it proving that it can work. Later when Tom gets back and apologises and everyone excepts it apart from Eugene who gets annoyed that he gets a free pass Jun shows Tom the book and the page showing the Original Riders stating Hiccup became so great because of the help of his friends which reminds Tom to believe in his friends.
In "Webs' Masters", while waiting for Eugene to rescue Webmaster, Tom then consults the Book of Dragons and finds out the dragons that kidnapped Webmaster and are currently trying to evade are Deathgrippers and finds out what they're capable of realizes that Eugene is in danger.
In "Poison Control", after Ford and Winston fail to capture dragons due to the Riders stopping them they tell Buzzsaw about the Book of Dragons in which he devises a plan to get it for himself, so he poisons Thunder and tells Tom that he'll give the antidote to him only if they exchange the book for it. The Riders try finding another way to save Thunder's life so after even consulting the book for answers they find nothing and are considering to exchange it for the antidote but when they find out the Hobgobbler they rescued was also poisoned so after D'Angelo looks through the book for answers he finds out about the flowers they eat and could be a possible cure. When the flowers fail Tom is left with no choice but to handover the book for the antidote to save Thunder's life but when he hands over the book Tom finds out the antidote is a hoax and then Buzzsaw captures him and plans to kill him but the Riders manage to rescue Tom but Buzzsaw uses Jack to escape with the book. When Buzzsaw has the book safely in his possession he finds out that it's written in Nordic Runes so he can't read it and becomes frustrated but then becomes curious as he sees the page showing Dagur the Deranged and thinks he's a Dragon King.
In "In Too Deep", despite not being able to read the Book of Dragons Buzzsaw can still understand barely through the pictures in which he tracks down an Octofin and captures it, when the Riders arrive to get the book back and free the Dragon Buzzsaw has Ford and Winston drop the Dragon so they can escape the Riders, also Tom still has knowledge from the book as he recognised the Octofin from reading about it. Later when Tom, Jun and D'Angelo use the Bathysphere to help rescue the Octofin they encounter a Shellfire in which Tom read from the Book that they're only aggressive if you enter their territory which they did.
Dragons: The Nine Realms, Season 7[]
In "Hobs and Saw", Tom plans to raid Buzzsaw's camp to retrieve the Book of Dragons from Buzzsaw however with D'Angelo and Plowhorn being busy at the Dragon Hospital they're all not at full strength so Tom then suggests doing a stealth mission to get the book back covertly. When they arrive at Buzzsaw's camp and he walks away leaving the book unguarded Tom sneaks in and manages to grab it, hiding as Ford and Winston come by and figure out a trespasser is nearby. As Tom tries to sneak away with the book Ford and Winston notice him and start shooting arrows at him with crossbows so when the Riders are discovered Buzzsaw grabs it and brags that he used the page showing Dagur and his weapons as inspiration for his new artillery.
In "Heart of Glass", as the Riders walk through Rakke Town Tom states that somehow Buzzsaw will slip up which will be their chance to grab and take back the Book of Dragons.
In "In the Cards", when the Riders encounter a Typhoomerang and calm it down, Tom mentions that he read about them in the Book of Dragons stating that they weren't afraid of eels which reveals how the Typhoomerang got past the eel barrier.
In "Eugene's Lean Mean Extreme Dream Team", Buzzsaw doesn't like Sledkin and Linda mining Dragonsite while trespassing in the Hidden World as he claims it for himself but sees this as an opportunity since since he can't understand the writing of the Book of Dragons he makes a deal that Sledkin can continue her research as long as she translates it for him, but as she tries to take a peek at it Buzzsaw snatches it off her until they are in agreement in which starts their new partner ship.
In "404 Alex Not Found", Buzzsaw grows impatient with Sledkin as she doesn't translate the book for him as he wishes to find a death dragon then when tries to take peek at it he snatches it off her and tells her she can only read it when she's translating it for him. Buzzsaw decides to look for the dragon himself so he takes the book and heads to the Crystal Realm, after he captures Alex she realises he's desperate to find his death dragon but can't read the book. After struggling to navigate through the Realm Buzzsaw allows Alex to show him his death dragon in which he takes the book with them as they enter the silver maze, later when the Riders come to rescue Alex and she pretends to betray them she earns Buzzsaw's trust so much so that when she pretends leads to his death dragon she offers to hold the book in which he trusts her with it. However, the first chance Alex gets she and Feathers makes a run for it and Buzzsaw becomes angry she betrayed him to get the book, thankfully she meets up with the Riders who are surprised to see her and the book and then make a run for it and leave Buzzsaw trapped in the Silver Maze. When he gets out he and meets up with Sledkin he acts defeated but Sledkin then informs him she took pictures of the book on her phone. After the riders return to the Lair Alex rightfully returns the book to Tom in which he happily returns her Tablet to her completely fixed, however Alex dose inform everyone what Buzzsaw was looking for in which she shows them a page depicting a monstrous serpent dragon in a place called the Dark Realm.
In "Rise of Jörmungandr", with the pictures on Sledkin's phone Buzzsaw finds and treks his way to the Dark Realm to find his death dragon. Meanwhile the team meets up in Jun's room where she informs them that in the book the Dark Realm is supposed to the Norse Myth known as Helheim, and that the snake beast is known as Jörmungandr the World Serpent and the book states it's the apex predator of all dragons in which by looking at it D'Angelo theorizes that it must be why dragons are afraid of eels by it's appearance.
Dragons: The Nine Realms, Season 8[]
In "How to Train Jörmungandr", while Tom looks for answers about how to defeat Jörmungandr he learns about Valka's staff hidden behind the Night Fury symbol of Jörmungandr's cage. Once found and after consulting the riders Tom tries to learn how to use it so he looks at a page showing Valka commanding her Bewilderbeast and learns that its used by spinning it. However after numerous fails Tom gives up but Jun encourages him by reading from the book of how Hiccup used the staff to trap Jörmungandr.
In "The Great Foster Fake-Out", when Jun is unsure about Tom's plan for Rakke Town to foster dragons Tom explains to her that the book said Hiccup grew up in a town full of dragons.
In "Of Gods and Monsters", when the riders confront Linda on Sledkin's whereabouts Linda states that Sledkin became obsessed with a Dragonsite Gem she discovered in the book.
In "Ragnarok: Part 1", Tom uses the book to show the riders the recipe for Gronckle Iron.
In "Ragnarok: Part 2", when Tom becomes depressed and looks at Jörmungandr's page knowing he can't defeat it and that he's nothing like Hiccup, but to make him feel better Jun states that from what she read in the book that Hiccup was a thinker and an inventor and that Tom is nothing like him but she then states that what she read about Astrid was that she was fearless, a warrior and used her steel in which she compares Tom to her instead.
Physical Appearance[]
Unlike its predecessor, this Book of Dragons is loosely bound, with a brown leather binding complete with the Strike Class symbol embossed into it. It contains many drawings of the Hidden World, various dragons, and the original six Dragon Riders. (Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut) All writing is in Nordic runes.
Function[]
Much like the original Dragon Manual of the Viking Age, the Book of Dragons seems to serve as an encyclopedia regarding numerous species of dragons encountered by the Hooligan Tribe, listing their names and providing insight into their abilities. Some of the dragons catalogued in its encyclopedia include Whispering Deaths, Monstrous Nightmares, and Skrills, among others. In addition, the Book also contains historical records relating to the Viking’s interactions with dragons, with some of its pages possessing sketches of the early Dragon Riders of Berk drawn into them. Coinciding with its historical references, the Book also provides detailed descriptions of the geography of various parts of the Hidden World, namely the Ice Realm, seemingly for the purpose of serving as a guide to any humans passing through them.
Unfortunately, however, all of the accounts and information in the Book of Dragons are written in Nordic runes, the standard written language of the Vikings. This makes the book very difficult to decipher for those unfamiliar with the language, which can lead to misinterpretation. To avoid any further misreadings, during "Punishment and Torcher", Tom and Jun create a key to decipher the runes and make it easier to read.
