Angela Baker is a character in the series Dragons: The Nine Realms. She is a nurse and teacher employed by the Rakke Corporation at ICARIS station. She is the wife of Philip Baker and the mother of D'Angelo Baker.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Prior to working at ICARIS, Angela served in the military and married fellow soldier Philip Baker. The two had a son, D'Angelo.
At some point, Angela suffered a permanent injury to her spinal cord, rendering her confined to an automatic wheelchair.
Sometime later, she joined the Rakke Corps as a nurse and school teacher for Project ICARIS.
Studying the Kullersen Fissure[]
Following the opening of the Kullersen Fissure, Angela and her husband moved to the Rakke Corp's ICARIS station to help in studying the fissure, with Angela serving as a nurse and teacher while Philip was made the head of the station’s security. They also brought their son, D'Angelo, with them.
In "Dragon Club", Angela and D'Angelo were arranging boxes in the medical bay, when an earthquake hit. Angela helped her son get up and encouraged him to make friends with the other teens at ICARIS. Later that day, Angela served dinner with her husband, son, Tom, and Jun, and was amused by the story D'Angelo told about his day.
In "Fault Ripper", Angela was present at the meeting where Olivia presented the idea of detonating a bomb in the Fissure in order to prevent future earthquakes. She later accompanied Philip, who was going on the mission, and gave him words of encouragement. After he returned, the two of them hugged lovingly.
Teaching Lessons[]
In "Dragons of the Undead", Angela taught the teens the importance of public speaking and told them to prepare a speech that they would hold in front of the entire station.
In "The Tangled Web", Angela defended her son in front of Philip, claiming that the boy was trying to be brave. She then reminded her husband that he also used to disobey rules in his youth.
Meeting the Dragons[]
In "Scent of a Dragon", when Jun tells Tom that she thinks its unfair that she can't tell May about the dragon secret, D'Angelo also chimes in saying that he'd love to stop lying by omission to his parents.
In "Deep Freeze", Angela is first seen trying to take care of Dr. Sledkin, who is still recovering from an attack three days prior, despite the latter's protest. She later saw Olivia and Phil trying to use the station's helicopter to go get for ICARIS, but became scared when it went out of control due to a frozen blade. When dragons came to the rescue, Phil was scared by their appearance and fell in the Fissure, causing Angela to nearly sob for the possible demise of her husband. Fortunately, D'Angelo saved him with the help of Plowhorn, which made Angela both relieved and confused. Tom introduced everyone, even Angela, to their dragon friends where he promised that they can learn to be friends and allies as long as they are respected and protected, while D'Angelo mentioned that, due to the employees being under secrecy guidelines, no one was allowed to tell anyone outside of ICARIS about their discovery. She decided to allow them a chance to prove this was possible.
Living With Dragons[]
In "Dragons Everywhere!", when wild Dragons start coming up to Rakke Town and started bothering everyone, the riders grab a hold of the situation and wrangle them back into the Hidden World, when Tom and Thunder start handling the dragon problem Pete praises them making everyone else including Angela to praise them. Later after the other riders officially get rid off all the wild dragons Pete starts praising them making everyone else including Angela to praise them too.
In "In Too Deep", when Buzzsaw and Jack attacked everyone at ICARIS she witnessed him making his threat, and after the riders returned home she wanted to know why they didn't tell them about Buzzsaw.
Trying to Convince her Husband[]
In "Hobs and Saw", Angela was unfazed by a Hobgobbler in their home and even told her husband that he liked him and that she kept her spot in the bed nice and warm, so no wonder the little dragon sat in it. When Philip tried denying the Hobgobbler to stay in their dome, he tried using the excuse of Angela being allergic to cats and figured dragons as well, but she denied saying she was fine. Angela then stated that the Hobgobbler was really cute and stated that it might be nice to have a little dragon around them for a few days, in which Philip couldn't deny since she and D'Angelo double teamed and outvoted him.
ICARIS Closes Down[]
In "Ragnarok: Part 2", like everyone else at ICARIS Angela was a witness to the Jörmungandr attack but thankfully unharmed after the battle was over she and Philip went to to D'Angelo thankful he was safe but was horrified seeing all the damage the serpent did to Rakke Town. And after the dragons left and it been deemed ICARIS was unsafe for everyone like the other Rakke Employees she and her family left and headed back to work at D'Angelo's Grandfather's farm in Africa. In the credits showing where everyone ended up she and Philip are seen being very proud of how skilled D'Angelo has become as a veterinarian as he bandages the leg wounds of an injured Rhinoceros.
Physical Appearance[]
Angela is a dark-skinned woman with black hair, kept in a bun, and brown eyes. She is unable to walk, so she uses a wheelchair.
She wears a long-sleeved blue overall with boots as her work uniform, along with dark blue fingerless gloves and a black belt with a green buckle. She also wears pearl earrings.
Personality[]
Angela is a kind, compassionate, and optimistic woman, who doesn't allow her disability to hinder her happiness in life. She is shown to be a caring and nurturing mother, always providing support for her son D'Angelo and comforting him when he is sad. Despite this, it is stated in her that she doesn't tolerate nonsense, indicating that she can be strict when she feels she needs to be. As a doctor, Angela holds a special compassion for helping others, including animals. After learning about the existence of dragons, and months of adapting, she came to see how special the dragons were and believed D'Angelo's Dragon Hospital was a great idea on how to learn to take care of them. She even expressed this while trying to convince Phil to let Hobs stay for a few days in the dome with them.
Abilities, Talents, and Skills[]
- Teaching: Angela graduated with a degree in teaching, and currently holds classes for the teens at ICARIS. She is a kind teacher, who doesn't get angry when her students do something unexpected, such as when Alex hid during a lesson about public speaking.
- Nursing: Angela also displays good nursing skills tending to injured people.
Relationships[]
D'Angelo Baker[]
Angela is shown to be very loving towards her son D'Angelo. The two are close with D'Angelo often turning to her whenever he is sad or disappointed. Angela is always willing to help her son during his hard times. She was shown to be saddened over his disappointment over not being able to make friends at ICARIS and attempted to provide him encouragement and comfort. She was later pleased to discover that her son succeeded in making friends later on.
Angela does, however, worry for D'Angelo sometimes when he exhibits odd behaviour, which unknown to her is because of his difficulty telling lies and keeping secrets. Eventually, the truth about dragons came out when D saved his father with Plowhorn's help, and while she is confused about this, she was also relieved that nobody got hurt.
In "Hobs and Saw", she supported D when Hobs the Hobgobbler followed Phil to their dome and takes an instant liking to her husband and wanted him to stay with them in hopes of seeing the two bond. This indicates that she quickly came to see the potential of having dragons as friends and having a dragon hospital to care for the injured reptiles.
Philip Baker[]
Philip is Angela's husband, to whom she is happily married to. When Philip joined Dr. Kullersen in attempting to blow up the fault line to prevent further earthquakes at ICARIS, she was shown to be worried for his safety, telling him to come back to her. When the Fault Ripper attacked her Philip and Olivia's probe, Angela was deeply worried for her husband, but was later relieved when he returned safely, to the point where she embraced him.
In "The Tangled Web", when Phil scolded their son and Tom for breaking the rules to rescue a songbird, she stood up for the boys saying they were just being brave, and also told Phil how he too used to be reckless.
In "Deep Freeze", when the helicopter went out of control and started falling into the Fissure with Phil inside it, she grew really scared for his well-being, even when he fell out after being spooked by the appearance of Wu and Wei. But became relieved when D'Angelo rescued him with their son's dragon, and they once again embraced each other affectionately.
In "Hobs and Saw", when Hobgobbler Hobs followed Phil back to their dome, she saw how much the little dragon liked her husband and argued that they let him stay with them to heal and to bond with the Chief.
Plowhorn[]
Angela officially meets D'Angelo's dragon, Plowhorn, for the first time in "Deep Freeze" after rescuing her husband from falling into the Fissure. She, in turn, was shocked and speechless seeing her up close but later became grateful as she rescued Philip and used her fire breath to create a fire for her and the other ICARIS workers to keep warm. Between Angela and Phil, Angela seems to have developed a strong liking towards the dragons, including Plowhorn.
When Jörmungandr threatened all life in the Hidden World and on the surface, she knew that the kids would be sad if ICARIS closed down and the dragons had to return to hiding. Though she was sad Plowhorn and the dragons did go back to the Hidden World to stay hidden, she still loved Plowhorn enough to keep her existence a secret.
Tom Kullersen[]
Tom Kullersen is a friend of Angela’s son D’Angelo and a student in her class at ICARIS. While she may disapprove of Tom’s tendency to get into trouble around the station, she is far less critical of him than her husband. The two are shown to have a healthy student-teacher relationship, with Tom being respectful and jovial in her classes. Angela is also shown to approve of her son’s friendship with Tom, being happy that her son is able to make friends with him and the other kids at the station. When Philip was mad at Tom and D’Angelo in "The Tangled Web" and expressed his opinion of the former being a bad influence on their son, Angela defended D’Angelo and subtly Tom as well, acknowledging that the boys were just trying to be brave and do what was right.
In "Deep Freeze", she, along with the other ICARIS employees, were introduced to the dragons by him. With him claiming that while they do look big and fearsome, if everyone shows them respect and protects them, they can be great friends.
Awhile later, she has shown to be very interested in the dragons that she believed they were worth learning from and being friends with.
Jun Wong[]
Jun Wong is the daughter of ICARIS’s Director of Operations May Wong and another student in Angela’s classes at the station. The two are shown to have a very healthy student-teacher relationship, with Jun always being active and ready to participate in Angela’s classes.
Alexandra Gonzalez[]
Alex Gonzalez is Angela’s fourth and final student at ICARIS. Unlike the other three students, however, Alex’s shy personality tends to cause problems in the classroom, with her unexpectedly leaving during class discussions when she feels overwhelmed. Despite this, Angela never gets frustrated with Alex’s behavior, seemingly understanding her student’s issues with adapting to the outside world.
Hobs[]
Hobs is a Hobgobbler that Phil saved from choking. When she saw that the little dragon liked him, she claimed he was cute and supported D'Angelo in letting him stay in their dome until he healed in hopes of seeing her husband bond well with Hobs. While it is unknown, it could be likely she has seen that Phil and Hobs now have a healthy and friendly bond with each other.
Wilma Sledkin[]
After Sledkin got stung and paralysed frozen by a Speed Stinger Angela kept a close eye on her in the infirmary to figure out what happened to her, when the Speed Stinger venom was wearing off Sledkin stated she was fine but became annoyed that she wasn't allowed to leave due to Angela still trying to figure out what happened she didn't allow Sledkin to leave.
Though not shown It's also implied that after Sledkin had tried to kill D'Angelo and the other riders by trapping them in a cave in depriving them of oxygen, Angela most likely became angry with her like the other parents.
Buzzsaw[]
From "In Too Deep", Angela and everybody in Rakke Town meets Buzzsaw and becomes scared after he attacked them with Jack and after he threatened them to stay out of the Hidden world.
